Recently when traveling I witnessed a precious example of a mother's unconditional love.
I was flying from the east coast to the west coast on an evening flight, ending fairly late because of the time change. I found myself sitting next to two little girls, sisters, who were quite exhausted by the late travel. The older of the two was so tired she wasn't feeling well and slept pretty much the whole trip. Her sister was sitting next to me. Across the aisle was an older woman, unrelated to the girls as I was, then the girls' mother and their younger brother.
Throughout the long flight the girls' mother was solicitous of their welfare. She would come and kneel in front of her daughters and caress their heads, speak softly to them, and give them kisses, settling them into sleep. She never seemed to wish she could sit quietly and have a few minutes to herself. She was tireless, though I would have expected her to be tired.
I was very blessed to see how she mothered. It gave me something to aspire to. I don't think I can live up to it, but I can live up to myself. It was a good start to my trip. It gave me a different kind of wings.
When have you witnessed unconditional love?
