I was thinking about this Bible verse the other day, and it began to open up to new levels for me. A couple of friends said I should write about it.
Ezekiel 34:16 I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: KJV
I realized as I was led to keep coming back to it, that likely it covers the whole gamut of human woes and difficulties. I had never seen that before, and I thought of the prophet's inspiration to catch it in possibly the shortest number of phrases. And over it all is God's very nature being with us.
I thought:
That which was lost might refer to those who take themselves out of the running, such as the prodigal son... God goes after them and seeks them out...you can never get outside God's love. He seeks that which is lost. Like with Jonah, He never lets us go.
That which was driven away might refer to the times we feel left out by life...maybe someone has a party and we don't feel invited (like the prodigal's brother) (who probably took himself out as much as his brother did) (two sides of the same coin)(I think there is a tendency to take ourselves out if we feel we've been rejected)...or we find out we weren't invited to lunch or aren't included in conversations or someone talks about us behind our backs....God brings us back again...
That which was broken...I thought of all the ways that life conspires to seem to break us, not just broken bones, though I think it applies then too...but the times when if I hadn't come out from an experience, I would have been irretrievably broken by it...God binds us up -- that which seems to have no possible way of being put back together again becomes whole again -- and dare we hope, stronger at the broken places as it is with bones...
That which was sick ... whether sick in body, heart, soul or spirit...chances are, we might be facing something on one of those fronts...God will strengthen us as we go through it, finding healing, comfort and solace.
Deut 2: 7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. KJV
I've walked some deep wildernesses, and I find it comforting to realize that God is with me. I have not walked alone in them. That is the only thing that brought me out.
