Whether you like artificial means of producing scent or whether you prefer natural ingredients or a combination of both, this article gives a little insight into the director of one of the top producers in the world of artificial scents and flavors.

The search for promising scents is a life-long one, if you love fragrance. Me, in many cases I prefer the vintage formulas of favorite fragrances. After a while, tweaking the formula changes the character for me. And I find many of the new fragrances, rife with artificial scents, smell identical after a while. They just don't smell true.

I'd like to work in the field though!

I'm not sure I've ever met a fragrance that can duplicate what nature has for us. The scent outside a friend's house should be bottled and worn. It is mostly her purple jacaranda tree that is in bloom. I think I'm into flowers this year, whether I can wear the scent of that flower or not.

How about you? Do you have a favorite vintage fragrance that has lost it bloom in the newer incarnations? Which do you prefer?

[Subha Patel] is the director of nature-inspired fragrance technology for International Flavors & Fragrances... Patel, 58, oversees the company's botanical gardens in Union Beach, including the world's largest collection of aromatic orchids...

Patel loves to escort clients and guests through the greenhouses, which have been renovated under her watch, with a courtyard fitted between the buildings and a gentle waterfall masking the sounds of Route 36 beyond. The hundreds of specimens gathered there -- orchids, lilies, roses, fruits, herbs, roots, cacti, citrus trees -- are each trying to communicate their essences through their scent.

"It's the way the plants talk to you," she says. "They talk to you through their aromas, and we are trying to understand their languages." ...

At its best, perfumery is more than merely pleasant smells. "It's about feeling," says Nicolas Mirzayantz, IFF's fragrances president. "It's about connections. It's about transcending some of your emotions. It's about the way you connect to the world."
