Speaking of libraries

Generally speaking, I don’t buy books, as I absolutely have no place to put even one more — which doesn’t stop me on occasion.

I tend to go to the library and have them order a book for me, even if it is outside our library system.

When we first moved here, the area around us was undeveloped (which it isn’t now) and we were served by a mobile library truck that came once a week. Even that was nice! Then they put a library into a strip zone shopping center. When the library outgrew that, a free standing library was built about 5 minutes away (and also 5 mins from us.) This is a very nice library, and I can usually find books.

Additionally, within 30 minutes of us there are at least 6 libraries. I tend to go to others if I go in that particular direction and have enough time to spare.

One library in particular has the most interesting books that are displayed in a way that I can always find a new author or an interesting book that I might never, ever find in the library closest to my house. I had stopped myself from picking up any of these books two nights ago as I still had books to read. Then, I had to go past it again last night, so I succumbed and got them all (they were still there.) I am set to read now!

How about you? Is there a particular library that you tend to go to, where you can usually find something interesting? Do you have the options of several libraries or only one? Or are you not particularly a reader (as two of my family members are not — it’s like pulling teeth to get them to read.)

Hey Karin

I am afraid I must have some sort of collector’s or packrat’s gene… I prefer to buy books even though space is a problem at my place too! But I love having the books I love and displaying them.

Oh no, I understand that! I’m fighting my nature, but all my bookshelves are full, baskets are full, tables are full. I’d need a room just for my library (which I would truly love!)

Sometimes I like to look at the book from the library, then buy it, sometimes before I’ve even finished it, especially if it is a book that I would like to underline on the first read.

I’d love to have a library room too…. There is the amazing house I pass by a few times a week on my way to one of the university buildings. I always look inside the grand windows.. it is a medium sized library room, every wall is covered in books and because it has very high ceilings, there is a balcony wrapping around the room inside, and up there, every wall is once again covered in books. The room is otherwise spartanly (but no less impressively furnished): A grand table on the parquet floor. A lovely chandelier. That’s all. I wish it was mine!

I’ve seen a couple of houses like that, and I would love to have that! OTOH, I want to read in every room of my house, not just one, though finding a quiet place is sometimes near impossible — I have to keep moving through the house.

Our library here has excellent on-going book sales of surplus books donated to the library. 50 cents for a paperback; $1-2 for a hardback. I’m tempted to collect a couple of favorite authors because it is possible, but pretty soon I’d have to sleep on the ceiling. I think I’m going to go today and buy at least one! So much for that!
