Review The Last Airbender

Book Girl and I went to see this movie this morning, and we both loved it.

The special effects are extremely well done.

Much of the physical movements are like the slow motion of tai chi, but that is a plus for me, considering how many times I saw it done in parks in China by groups of people. It is completely believable.

Some of the movements are as beautiful and full of grace as dance.

The story
The 4 kingdoms of the earth: Air, Fire, Water, Earth are at odds with each other. Only the Avatar, the last Airbender, has the ability to unite them in peace. He is not supposed to harm people with his powers, but to harness his anger or sorrows.

Unfortunately when the reborn Avatar was to take his position, he ran away, because he did not want to live a life without family. He ended up imprisoned in the ocean for 100 years, until he was released by a brother and sister, the sister is the last Water Bender of her village.

Consequently the Fire Nation is determined to obtain the Avatar for themselves: both the ousted prince and the military commander want to be the one who finds him, because it will put whichever of them in good graces with the king who is not much of a father.

The Avatar, the last airbender, only knows how to bend air. He does not yet know how to bend water, earth or fire.

In this movie, to be continued, he learns to bend water.

It's not quite sure if he and the prince will become allies vs. enemies. The prince's uncle is a wise counselor, but the prince tends to be hot-headed.

Our theater was quite full. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. We certainly would rate it higher than the 1 star that the reviewer in our paper gave it. I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Noah Ringer is excellent in the lead as Aang. I enjoyed seeing Jackson Rathbone in a character who is not a vampire, though he was excellent in Eclipse. All the casting was perfect, so far as I was concerned, and the costumes were very well done.

We will definitely go to see the second movie. Book Girl says she would like to own it, especially if the other stories are told. If there are books, she would like to read the books. Me too!

This is based on an animated series.

Have you seen the movie?
