Continuing through more of the samples passed to me from a generous POLer.
The Great Empresses of Japan is part of seven fragrances in Roméa d’Améor’s line developed by now-retired perfumer Pierre Bourdon (Frederic Malle’s Iris Poudre and French Lover, Davidoff’s Cool Water, Shiseido’s Féminité du Bois, Yves Saint Laurent’s Kouros, etc.)
Each scent is an interpretation of a real historical woman. I haven't decided if the descriptions are more fanciful than historical.
The Great Empresses of Japan is available from Lucky Scent (as they all are) $135 for 100 ml or $3 for .7 ml.
Notes: freesia, melon, ylang-ylang, violet, rose, lily-of-the-valley, peony, heliotrope and iris, orris root, vetiver, teak wood, sandalwood, tonka bean
The back story on this one includes the recognition of Buddhism in Japan by the Empress Suiko, the first woman to rule Japan, and its seven characteristics: sweet, light, salty, bitter, bitter, spicy and acidic -- all incorporated in this fragrance.
To me, the fragrance is overwhelmingly sweet, and since I associate sweet with vanilla, I keep thinking there is some vanilla in this, but likely it is the tonka bean. I don't catch any melon or any flowers, particularly. Just sweetness wafting on the wind.
It's a little too sweet for my taste, but it might be perfect for you.
Do you wear this one?
Does any particular note come out the strongest on you?
