If you haven’t heard of this movie, hurry on over to your nearest theater and see it. Book Girl and I went this morning. I had heard via the grapevine that it is a wonderful movie, which leaves you feeling good.
Sandra Bullock is just perfect in this movie, as is Tim McGraw, cast as her husband.
I enjoyed New Moon for its campiness, but this is the real deal, and New Moon pales beside this one, bad pun intended.
Based on a true story, it tells how Michael Oher, a homeless black teen, finds a home and love with the Tuohy’s. Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) and her husband, Sean (Tim McGraw) give him a spot on their couch when they see him walking in the cold, dressed for warmer weather.
Christianity, faith and miracles
How they come to love each other is one of God’s miracles. There is a sense of faith portrayed — Leigh Anne wears a cross — and she asks Sean at one point if she is a good Christian woman.
This could have as easily been the story of any other family of faith in God, whether Christian or not. Except in RL the family was Christian. If you are a person of faith, you will see God’s hand in it too.
Can I be her when I grow up?
I want to be the kind of woman that Bullock portrays. Smart and sassy; loving and lovable; involved in her children’s lives; willing to stand up to her friends for her family; willing to question if she is doing the right thing.
Touching scenes
I don’t want to give anything away, just to say there are so many touching scenes — and funny ones too!
I find it touching, since I am the mother to two daughters from China, that Leigh Anne wants his mother to know that she will always be his mother.
Smart kid, no education
Michael has had a lot of foster homes and interrupted schooling, and while he tests low and has had no help, he tests high in protectiveness. A few of his teachers believe in him, realizing he knows the material, whether he is able to read well or not.
Kathy Bates becomes his tutor.
His brother, S.J.
Jae Head is the kid you love to love in this movie. He steals every scene he is in, in a good way. If it had been cast wrong, it could have been obnoxious. He has perfect timing and is such a joy to watch!
PG-13
One scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references.
Love
This is a movie about how love redeems — and it redeems the one who loves. I really enjoyed the dynamics in the marriage.
The rest of the story
How Michael is recruited for college, then pro football is part of the story. Be sure to sit through the credits for there are pictures of the real Tuohy family along the path.
Both of us said we’d love to see it again. Soon. And lucky, lucky Faith Hill!
Have you seen it?

It really was a fantastic movie. I loved loved loved Sandra Bullock in this movie. As you said she must have poured over a ton of photos because most of her facial expressions mirrored the real mother from the ones we saw in the credits. Sweet, slow, and full of laughs.
I have heard that it is the best she has ever been.
