BookGirl and I went to Sex in the City 2 last night to the midnight showing. We chose not to go to the theater we usually go to, because it was about a 1/2 hour away. Instead, we went to the theater which is closer, but I'm sure it was not as much fun. The other theater is planning at least two parties.
You could tell we live in the back of beyond, at least as far as this theater is concerned, because only a few were dressed in finery and high stilettos. One woman actually wore her flannel PJ bottoms. Another brought her Snugli blanket. (In all fairness, it was very cold in the theater.) It was about 2/3 full, with a smattering of men in the audience.
Where to start.
Some things were disturbing in the movie
The amount of alcohol openly flowing in Abu Dhabi -- is that possible in the culture? The lack of reverence or understanding for another culture.
The constant crying of baby Rose. (How did they get the baby to do that? And if it were not induced, and even if it was, then this constitutes child abuse as far as I'm concerned to have her in this movie, script or no. No way would I have allowed any of my children to be put in such a position.)
Some things were merely silly -- and expected -- riding a camel in designer clothes and stilettos, then trying to walk in the sand in them. Right. That's what we'd do.
The parade of clothes -- some gorgeous; some over the top. But hey, that's what we go to see!
Don't miss the opening 5 minutes
I especially liked this flashback scene, and so did the theater.
The Gay Wedding
This was a funny, over the top sequence. Touching and full of love.
It is the frosting on the cake to have Liza Minnelli conduct the ceremony, then perform during the reception. The audience loved it. You gotta hand it to her for her longevity and her talent. It hurts to see her older. But in a sense, she was caricaturing her own image. So there is laughter. She rocks.
And interesting to see how it plays out during the reception with the friends.
The girls
Every one of them looks a lot older. That's not to say they don't look good -- they do. Eventually they will become the new version of The Golden Girls, and that will be fun to see too.
Samantha's overly white face was off-putting to me in every scene. Either they used too light a makeup (unlikely) or she has had a face peel. Her face doesn't match in color the rest of her. It is not youthful; it is more aging, as far as I'm concerned.
The enduring friendship
It's nice to see their closeness, despite their differences. It's nice to see how it plays out across their respective lives. It was good to see Samantha saying she wouldn't possibly go to Abu Dhabi without her friends. And how she guilts Charlotte into going -- very funny.
Samantha
Kim Cattrall isn't afraid to go places no one else would dare or make herself look silly (or even not look her best) in order to add comedy. Warding off menopause. Courageous!
She has a couple of lines where I'd like to see the outtakes. How she could say them with a straight face is beyond me. I bet the outtakes are hilarious.
She contributes a couple of really funny scenes, and some equally tasteless ones. Are you surprised?
But seriously, is Samantha so dumb that she would get herself into the situations she gets herself into in Abu Dhabi! Of course, it adds a very funny scene to the movie.
Charlotte
Has a gut wrenching scene about how difficult parenting is. Many of us could relate. She, however, has a nanny.
Carrie
Life with a husband who is getting older is not all it's cracked up to be. She has to find her way in this new scenario. He likes to lay on the couch and watch TV. He wants to stay in and order in. She wants some sparkle. I think a lot of women could relate to this. It's more poignant than funny.
Miranda
Miranda was a lot easier to take in this movie. She showed a better side. Thankfully.
Aiden
His presence is interesting.
The nanny
You have to see it.
I'd give it a 2. It is both fun and poignant. Poignant because life has some hard times in it. But the girls will get each other through. I salute them!
