This book was a pleasure to read from start to finish. It is peopled with interesting characters, funny and quirky, and a town filled with endearing folks, plus a couple of mean spirited ones.
This is, I believe, the second in a series, but I found and read it first.
Published by Bethany, it has Christian elements, but it is not preachy. There are funny and endearing prayers along the way.
The story
A hurricane is coming, but who will believe it. To get ready or not to get ready. And then do you get into the line of traffic heading for safety -- or ride it out...
We've faced these issues more than once where we live.
Kai Miller works on a cruise ship, but when she wakes up, she finds the ship has left early without her, to avoid the storm. And people are evacuating Perdida, Texas, despite long gas lines and massive traffic jams. She ends up traveling with her landlord's two dogs.
Heading to the port and the first cruise of their lives are Donetta, 69, and two of her friends from the small town of Daily, Texas. Donetta has a new computer which she believes will update them along the road to give them weather reports, but in reality she is getting the same page she opened the night before.
Narrated in turns, chapter by chapter, by Donetta and Kai, the book unfolds their stories through love and humor.
I loved every word.
Description of the storm
Wingate's descriptions are graphic and almost visual, though projected with words. If you've ever ridden through a hurricane, either by evacuating or sitting it out, you will know she knows what she is writing about.
The storm brings out the best and the worst in people. There is a car load of drunken bullies. Kai and Aunt Donetta join forces, then they are rescued by a busload of church members, all getting out together.
And because of Aunt Donetta, they all end up in Daily.
The love story
Aunt Donetta has no children, sadly, but she has a beloved nephew. And Aunt Donetta is herself a force of nature. She is also a born matchmaker and the town's hairdresser.
Have you read any books by Wingate? Have you read this one?
I give it 4 stars out of 4. There were times I laughed out loud.
