This is a sweet movie that Book Girl and I saw a couple of weeks ago. I just realized I hadn't written about it yet.

The Story
An American girl (Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried) goes to Italy with her boyfriend/fiance. He is about to open a restaurant and is obsessed with finding the right pasta and wines. He seems to be Italian, but it appears later that he is not. While in Italy, he pretty much ignores her. She had hoped it would be a honeymoon of sorts.

In her own wanderings and sightseeing, she comes upon a wall where letters to Juliet (of Romeo and Juliet) are deposited. They are answered by a corps of secretaries.

Natasha adds: There are people who answer the letters to Juliet -- her house is in Verona, which is near Venice -- I went there once and it's beautiful.

She finds a letter written many years before that had been inadvertently lost. She decides she would like to find the people. She writes a letter to the woman (Claire, played by Vanessa Redgrave) who shows up with her grandson (Charlie, played by Chris Egan) who is not at all pleased that she wants to look up a first love.

The search for Lorenzo
Together, the three of them search for Lorenzo, the lost love. This provides pathos and humor. There are many Lorenzos within a defined area, and some of them are ones you'd be glad you passed on the first go round.

Will true love win out
After all, this is a romantic movie, so you know it will. Claire finds her Lorenzo, the right one. Claire and Charlie fall in love -- and nearly lose each other.

The scenery
Most of the movie takes place in Tuscany, and the scenery is breath taking. See it in the theaters to take advantage of the scenes.

Have you seen the movie?
We liked it a lot. I give it a 2.5 or 3 out of 4 stars.
