Review Eye of the God by Ariel Allison

I really enjoyed this book! I think it would make a terrific movie.

The Story
The Hope Diamond is going to be stolen by a pair of thieves, brothers, who have stolen many paintings and jewels, brazenly, for the Collectors. Their liason is the Broker.

Woven throughout the modern day story are three historical stories that follow owning the Hope Diamond, which is believed to bring a curse to anyone who owns it, because it was originally said to be the eye of a statue of a Hindu god. We see the first owner who buys it in India to resell; later we see the king of France; still later, we see a modern socialite who owns it (and wears it, which seems almost impossible nowadays.)

Interwoven is a story of Christian faith, but it is not foremost, yet it has depth. It is not your usual faith story.

The Characters
Alex and Isaac Weld are the brothers who are thieves. Alex is the lighter of the two, the one that gets women to fall for him in order to ingratiate himself with them and get information. He loves them and leaves them. Isaac is the darker and harder of the two, able to scale rock surfaces, walk a tightrope, and etc. Alex really doesn't have the taste for it any more.

Alex certainly does not expect to fall in love with his next mark.

Abby Mitchell, a Smithsonian Director, has her eye on the diamond, literally visiting it hundreds of times. She is estranged from her father, but desires his love and acceptance. She is drawn to the beauty of the church across from her apartment and likes to see the light rise in it in the mornings. She was present when the brothers stole a number of paintings at another museum, but she doesn't recognize them.

Then there are the husband and wife team who love Abby as a daughter and are Interpol.

What happens
We know something is going down. There are plenty of clues along the way. At least one secret is revealed about 3/4 of the way through the book, though we might have guessed it.

Abby wears the diamond for a fund raiser -- and it is stolen right off her neck. She is subsequently fired for this.

How they track the diamond down and save the day -- and a few other characters along the way, along with other secrets is part of the fun.

There is some violence and some threat of violence, but it never gets to the point of gruesomeness.

This is the diamond's story -- as well as a developing love story.
