Beastly is the new rendition of Beauty and the Beast, and very well done at that. Based on a book by the same name (which I would like to read) it's a fairy tale with a good moral. The rich, popular, good looking guy, oh yeah! Also deeply hurt by his father's view on life and himself... gets his comeuppance...
Mary-Kate Olsen plays the witch who turns his life inside out: and makes him "as aggressively unattractive outside as [he is] in the inside..."
Vanessa Hudgens plays his beautiful love interest -- and beautiful she is, just a joy to watch.
Neil Patrick Harris is terrific as the blind tutor hired by his father. He is funny and touching and totally believable.
Lisa Gay Hamilton plays the housekeeper who loves him enough to see the real man he could become.
The makeup
Alex Pettyfer is still handsome, even under the tattoos. He was a good choice for the role. I have not read the book, but evidently in the book he was more beastly/hairy which worked for a cartoon, but would not have worked as well in a movie depicting 'real life.'
I loved how Mary-Kate Olsen was made up to be the witch. Strong, striking, lovely.
The ending
This is a fairy tale, so you know it will end right. But the ending after the ending is delicious and just what we needed. It reminds me of the ending of Twilight. I'd like to see a sequel, but not necessarily with the same characters. I would, however, like to see Mary-Kate Olsen reprise her role.
My take
I give this 3 out of 4*. I enjoyed it and would see it again. It's a fun movie with just enough suspense and many laughs (good ones.)
Have you seen it?

See I didn’t really like Mary-Kate Olsen in the film I don’t think. She looked like how I pictured the character, but she was weird or made the character overly weird for me.
I loved Alex Pettyfer. I thought he did really well. He’s what made the movie for me.
I give it 3 out of 5 Stars.
