Review Against All Odds by Irene Hannon
July 4th, 2010 | Book Review, Kindle book, Military, Romantic Suspense
If you like romantic suspense, you will enjoy this book. Against all Odds is part of the Heroes of Quantico series and was offered free for Kindle to hook you to the series.
Overview
There are elements of Christianity in the story, mentioning the Bible and prayer and the protagonist's faith. There is a developing love story, but no sex. The idea of forgiveness features in the story.
The story is more military than romance, in some respects.
The story
David Callahan is career statesman, divorced from his wife and estranged from his grown daughter. He is in charge of negotiations to free 3 Americans who have been kidnapped in Afghanistan. Now the terrorists have said the next kidnapping will be his daughter, but she has refused to take his phone calls or those of his aides, so she has no idea she is in danger, and it is closer than she would imagine. Callahan has friends in high places, since he has been successful in many areas. He calls the White House in order to try to keep his daughter safe.
Evan Cooper (Coop) is part of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team. He and his partner, Mark, are called in to see if they can convince Monica Callahan that there really is a danger to her -- and to protect her, if possible.
She will need to forgive her father, if she can, and learn more of who he is as a man.
The love story
She and Coop begin to fall in love. He is much like the man she felt her father was. And Coop learns the importance of learning to communicate his feelings so he doesn't end up alone with only a career at the end of his life.
Terrorism
The images of terrorists and terrorism and the reasons for the intractable anger and desire for revenge are well written.
Kidnapped
Despite their best efforts Monica is kidnapped. The reader learns how the terrorists were able to find her, even after she goes to a safe house. Later the agents also find out how they were found, as well as figure out how the kidnapping takes place right under their noses. I think I worried through half the book how this was going to take place, because I was pretty sure it would. And it is brutal.
The rescue
Because this is romantic suspense I was pretty sure she would be rescued, and she is. How this takes place is very believable and well written.
Have you read this book?
I give it a 4 out of 4 for this genre. I'm not sure I want to read any more of the series, though I have come to care for the other characters and would like to find out how they find their partners in life.
If you have read the series, do you have a favorite in the books?
