A Passion to Die For is part of the Silhouette Romantic Suspense line, and it is more up my alley than some of the other romantic suspense I have recently read. So perhaps I need to check out more of this line, as it is not as brutal as the others and leans more heavily on romance than suspense. Plus, this book was free for Kindle at the time I took it.
The story
Ellie Chase has had a tough life, but now she is sitting in a good place. Under an assumed name and identity, she owns a restaurant which is doing well in a small town. She has many friends and an ex-lover who would still love to marry her. But she is harboring secrets. And because of her fears and her past, she has not been able to open up to love.
When her slovenly, drunken mother shows up and threatens to expose her unless she takes her in and deeds to her her home and her restaurant, Ellie can hardly think. She resolves to run, because she feels no one would accept her, if they knew what her real background is.
Tom Callahan, her ex-lover and a policeman, witnesses her mother slapping her hard enough to draw blood. And he overhears her saying to the woman that she wishes she were dead. But she doesn't open up to him.
And then her mother is found victim to a hit and run accident by Ellie's car, but she has no memory of it. She is being framed.
How it all works out
Tom believes she is innocent and removes himself from the case. Her secrets some out when she tells Tom -- who continues to love her, and as you know in this genre, they find each other and give their love a second chance.
My take
As I said in the beginning, this is more my speed. The love story is strong; the fear of discovery is well developed; the climax is believable. Ellie is truly in danger, but Tom saves her life, as you would expect. The book is very well written with good character development. I'd like to read more of this author's books. There was a moment when I felt the book might have crossed into fantasy with a witchy woman showing up at Ellie's restaurant, perhaps to rescue her, but she was a real woman. I rate it 4 out of 4.
