Retail Therapy

Do you engage in retail therapy? And then do you get buyer's remorse? Generally speaking, I do not. And if I do, I fight it, reminding myself that if it is something I need, it is OK to have it.

For me, retail therapy takes on added dimensions. There are levels of comfort that flow over me.

My family background is in retail, so it is in my blood. I enjoy thinking about it; seeing how merchandise is presented; seeing how the designers lay out a store; seeing the particular colors of the season and how it is translated into all the various departments of the store from clothing to cosmetics to home; seeing how the merchandise is moved around from week to week; thinking about buying in the market and all that that entails; seeing how local stores translate fashion week into something that will sell in their market; shopping in various markets other than where I live; thinking about how different markets need different styles -- what flies in CA, might not fly in MI --

When I enter a mall or a store, it is comforting to me because it is the familiar, and it is not as stressful as when I owned stores, because I can just enjoy the fruits of other people's labors. I am not being urged by every manufacturer to spend all my money in their showroom, since I am not buying at market. I am aware of the competition between stores, which is a good thing. I know about finding a retail niche, advertising, display, and etc. And I know the particular worries that affect retail right now, but I am not intimately involved.

My mother and I would window shop, especially during the holidays, and have lunch out. My father taught me the business.

There's something about shopping that brings my family close to me, though they are both gone.

I always spend some time wandering around the cosmetics and perfume counters.

And it is the only place in my life where someone comes up to me and says, "May I help you?"
