Race to Witch Mountain

Book Girl and I went to see this movie a couple of weeks ago, and we were both surprised that we liked it as well as we did. A week or so later the rest of the family went, including the 13 yo and 11 yo. They both enjoyed it. The other adult, who normally likes any kind of sci-fi and looked engaged in the movie, commented only that there were too many chase scenes.

Personally, I enjoy watching The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). His acting has improved from his first movies, but seriously, who cares! He is just fun to watch.

The kids are cute. The waitress is helpful. The cops in the small town thwart the government guys. Throw a dog into the mix. And did I say, The Rock? And what’s not to love about Ciaran Hinds? Or Cheech Marin as Eddie Cortez? Garry Marshall was a hoot as Dr. Donald Harlan…even Carla Gugino as the scientist no one likes to believe…

It’s fast paced, with lots of car chases, an alien assassin, some good cgi. And you know going in that the good guys are gonna win, government will be thwarted, the kids will get home, the Rock is fun to watch (did I say that?)…what’s not to like for a bit of real life get-away.

Of course, only in a movie would anyone, even The Rock (who is fun to watch), be able to take the punches and the falls and the body slams and get up with nary a wince.

And you know going in that it has a happy ending. Not so bad for real life.

Have you seen it? I’ll likely get the DVD.

Then we borrowed from the library one of the older versions which isn’t at all similar. What a different a lot of years makes. I like the updated version, though I do like Eddie Albert and Ray Milland. It just looks so dated. And very slow paced.

It was definitely fun and better than I thought it would be going in. Very cute – I would say on a scale of five it’s 3.5-4 Stars.
