College Girl and I watched this last night on DVD. I actually liked it better than I thought I might. She had had a friend who didn't care for it, because she thought there was too much music and not enough dialogue. I didn't really know what to expect. It is basically a musical where the music forwards the story. And there is plenty to tie it into the 60's in little glimpses of what the country went through.
How could you not think of the Supremes? Seeing Beyonce was at times like seeing Diana Ross.
I felt Eddie Murphy should have won his Oscar. He did a great job. Jamie Foxx and Danny Glover were good in their parts too.
I enjoyed the clothes, hair styles (on the men too) and makeup which evoked the era. Living in Michigan at the time, I was well aware of the Detroit riots and what it meant for those of us in cities even several hours away. It changed the course of my father's business which was robbed by those thought to have come from Detroit (but not necessarily from Detroit.)
Have you seen it? did you enjoy it? We did.
