They are not inexpensive. But they are very elegant, though they can be worn with jeans.

You can search to see if there is a location near you. I also have a business card they gave me that lists their locations.

The good thing is that they will show you how to use them and let you try every color or color combination or style until you find what works for you.

They also have hair extensions that really are amazingly good matches for people's hair. I've seen them sell one or two every time I'm at their kiosk. (I have a couple that I'm not wearing that are not from them, so I haven't yet decided to buy one. And my hair is plenty long on it's own. The question is whether I want a fast way to put it up. And then, of course, if I would ever do it. Shades of the 70s revisited, but updated. I wore plenty of them then.)

I first saw them in Las Vegas, but since have seen them in a couple of other malls.

Don't be put off by the styles necessarily showing on their website. Some are over the top.

Many are beautiful in clear rhinestone.

The stick styles are pretty sprinkled in the hair along the sides. They are even nice when used in multiple colors, either in rows of separate colors or alternating. On blond hair, I liked amber or clear. The amber is more subtle.

You can see other ways to use them at the website. Using the half rounds with little stars or flowers is very nice too.

One style I bought in LV was difficult to get out of my hair because it snapped so tightly. They made an exchange for ones of the same style that opened more easily. Using these (they are crystal circles that snap together) makes it look like my hair is braided without braiding. I haven't tried the looser ones yet. The tight ones necessitated by daughter helping me remove them so as not to break my hair. The above styles do not do that. But I thought their service was excellent!

Let's discuss!
A good hair stylist is hard to find
One of the hardest things to find is a good hair stylist, one who understands your hair, how you like to look, and keeps you updated. With a few exceptions, while you could live with a bad haircut as a younger person, the older you are, the more important it is to have a good cut and know your stylist is looking out for your best interests, as well as is keeping current with what's happening with hair and hair products, including coloring.

Is it the hair or is it the total look?
Some of the styles Allure mentions haven't really been in style for years, and if a model shoot includes these styles, or if they are done for a movie, they are tweaked to look more modern.

At the same time, it is hard to single out the hair, when we are talking makeup too. It's a question whether their stylist (not hair stylist) picked the wrong look, or whether they need a stylist to help them choose their look.

But truthfully, how bad does a beautiful young woman ever look!

And how much is magic on an other wise ordinary woman?

And some of the women shown are older than others, so they have a tendency to look older anyway. We have to think in terms of seeing these styles on the same age woman -- but even then we have to take into account bone structure, etc. It's never just the hair -- though hair plays a large part.

Severe updos
In the first picture of Kate Winslet, her foundation is heavier and matte. In the second, her foundation is dewy, and she is wearing a beautiful shade of red lippie. So not only did she have the hair against her, but the makeup, in the first picture.

Honestly, she is a gorgeous woman. But softer updos have been the style for some time now.

Book Girl had a severe, old-fashioned, updo for a dance, and I was not a happy camper. I expected better of the stylist. And then he charged more than a regular style. Double ouch. We have not been back to him since.

Limp and lifeless (too straight) vs. bouncy waves
Two pictures of Cheryl Crow. In the first, her hair is straight, looks dry, and the color is too dark. In the second, she has beautiful, long naturally looking blond hair.

No question which is better on her.

Medium length corkscrews vs. long, tousled layers
Leighton Meester is photographed in a style that Allure says has not been in style since 1986. I suspect she was growing her hair out -- or not using extensions. The longer, tousled layers look great on her.

Reminds me of a time when I was going from long to short hair, but the first haircut aged me by about 10 years. I was about 34 at the time. I felt like crying! My hair stylist agreed with me. I went in the next day, she cut it shorter, and it looked great! Later, when I grew it out, for some reason it never went through the same awkward stage.

Blocky bangs vs. sideswept
Penelope Cruz is shown in the first picture with not only blocky bangs, but a severe updo. Two strikes against her. And her eye makeup is sharply defined. In the second picture, her eye makeup is softened by smudging, and she has a softer lip color.

Wasn't it Katie Holmes who rocked a blocky bang look not too long ago? You just have to know how it works. I know two others who wear blocky bangs. They have totally different looks, but it works for both of them.

Yanked back hair vs. side swept bangs and softer do
Sarah Jessica Parker rarely makes a fashion mistake. But in the first photo, she looks like they snapped her going to the grocery store, yet you can see an elegant gown. In the second, her hair looks softly elegant.

Super high hair vs. side part and hair softer
It's hard to catch Beyonce in a bad moment. In the first picture, her hair is in a high beehive. In the second, it cascades around her face in long layers. I'm not sure either is her best look.

OTOH, I really had to laugh at this one, because in the most recent Allure mag, several pages featured a truly ugly beehive, super bleached hair, and magna eyeliner on a model.

They should get their story straight. At least Beyonce looked somewhat natural with the do, whereas the feature article was done for effect.

Of course, everything ugly is beautiful, once you get past the shock of it.

Too dark and heavy vs. softer color
Scarlett Johansson's hair is dark and somewhat auburn in the first picture. She is perfection in every way. Her makeup is balanced to the hair color. And it all looks too heavy and dark. We are not used to seeing her with this look. It's hard to make her look matronly, but she does.

In the second picture, she has dish-water blond hair. Also, not her best look. But again, her makeup is balanced. This color is also darker than we are used to seeing her hair.

Too bleached vs. softer, warmer blond and style
What was Kate Moss thinking?

She looks like she took no thought to her hair to a fancy affair. Ditto for her makeup and her lack of jewelry. Kate can get away with bright blond hair, so it's the style as much as anything. It's not so much that her hair is bleached as that her roots show. If she had worn her hair down, they would have been camouflaged. And pulling it back, even if not as severely as some, doesn't hide laugh lines.

In the second picture, her hair is around her face, as well as a softer color. She could use some color in her makeup. She looks like she's having a hard night. She probably was.

Short curly hair vs. sleek and layered (this layers onto face)
In the first picture, Katie Holmes' makeup is the wrong shade, and her eyes are sharply defined. It's not just the hair. She looks almost unwell.

In the second, she is wearing the style heard round the world. And not only that, her makeup is gorgeous. Her lips are soft here too, but the color is better.

Retro vs. updated
Gwyneth Paltrow looks like she's channeling Veronica Lake in the first picture. It is retro, but it also looks like it's not the length we are used to seeing on her. It could be that her hair is tucked behind her shoulders. In the second picture, her look is softened and tousled. She looks fresher.

What do you think?
Do you agree a good hair style can takes years off your look – and conversely a bad hair style can make you look older? Has this ever happened to you? Please share with us! How do you like to wear your hair?

...that most makeup blogs (and images) are written by younger women...

...that advertising shows young women, even if they are advertising a product for an older woman, 90% of the time or more... What's up with that!

What if you fall outside the youth category, but you still have a lot of good years left!
...the short answer: find what works for you...

...if you intuitively know that something isn't working, be satisfied only when you figure out how to tweak it...

...ask MUAs, ask SAs, ask your hair stylist...

...ask a woman on the street if you love her look what makeup she is using or who cuts her hair or does her color...ask her what color she uses...

Colors
The older you are, the more it matters what colors you wear on your face or on your body. While you could get away with it when you were younger, you can't any longer. Wrong colors are no longer forgiving.

Warm or Cool colors
Find out if you look best in warm or cool colors. Most neutrals are also either warm or cool. So, for example, one gray or brown might be good on you; another not so good.

Softer or deeper
Because your skin tone changes some -- it might become pinker, asher or sallower -- you might need to go softer, brighter or deeper in your makeup colors to balance your skin tones better. You might need a darker or brighter lipstick -- or the opposite, one that is softer and more neutral. Same for your blush and shadows.

Hair color and style
Taking care of your hair will take years off your look. Keep your style in style.

If you color your hair, be sure to really look at yourself. Check the crown area. You might need to color more often. While you could get away with roots when you were younger, they aren't flattering now. Truthfully, they weren't flattering then either, but they are less so now. Or if you are quite white and your color washes out, you might need to color to keep the tone. If you let your hair go white, keep it white, not yellowed.

If you are used to being blond, you might have to change the shade of blond to one with more gold for it to look best.

It never hurts to look at illustrations in magazines and ask your hair stylist for other ideas. If you want to choose something different, give it some serious thought and go to someone who is really talented.

Eyebrows
Eyebrows becoming white
If your eyebrows are coming in strong with white, they are likely becoming more wiry too. Brush them upwards, then trim them even across the top. Then brush them back into place again.

Color the white
You can do this with permanent coloring. Some coloring is made strictly for brows. You can use some of your hair color, if you are careful. Disclaimer: don't get it in your eyes.

An alternative is to use a brow mascara made to color brows. Here's one.

Revlon also makes one that is duo ended, one end having a brow pencil.

A friend uses the following Lancome one, but in a different color. It has made all the difference in her appearance. Her natural brows are almost black, but she has about 50-50 white. This covers perfectly and looks natural. The brush is different than a mascara brush and covers better. I would recommend Lancome's. The Revlon (in blond) is more of a gel fixative; I don't think it covers my small amount of white, which fortunately doesn't show.

Hands
Don't forget your hands. If you need to, use hand lotion. You can even use a mask on them (some are made specifically for hands). Moisturize your cuticles before they start to ravel. After they ravel, a few applications of cuticle cream will take care of it nicely. I usually use the back of my hand for facial product; then I rub the backs of both hands together to distribute whatever is left on my hands. That works!

Body
There comes a point when you need to moisturize your body. If you are especially dry, you can shower, but eliminate any soap products. Just use water, except for the places where you need soap.

Arbonne has a fabulous Body Serum and Body Lotion. It cures what ails you. The difference in my arms is remarkable. Whereas before, my arms were moisturized, they felt like there was product on them. Now, my arms are moisturized, but it feels as if my skin can breath.

Contact Book Girl, if you are interested and do not have a consultant.

Use sunscreen and limit time in the sun
'Nuf said.

Teeth
Make sure your teeth are clean.

Bleach them with a drugstore product or at your dentist. All those years of coffee, tea and simply years do not have to show up on your teeth.

Change your products with the weather or by location
You will likely need more moisture in winter months than in summer. And if you go from a place with high humidity to a place with low humidity, you will need more moisture. The reverse is true also. If you go from a dry area to a humid area, you can use a lotion instead of a cream, for instance. Or simply use a little less product. Some products are considered smart products -- they deliver only what your skin needs at the moment. If you fly, moisturize your skin during the flight.

Think about tweaking your products depending on life stresses
We all know about skin break outs with stress or time of the month. Be proactive. If you are in a particularly stressful situation, take better care of yourself than you might on an ordinary day. It never hurts to be good to yourself. Change your moisturizer to one that defends against breakouts or that will give you added moisture. You know yourself and what you need.

Smile
If you look happy, you will draw people to you, and they will notice your happiness, especially if the rest of you matches the same image and doesn't get in the way of your smile.

What have you changed in your makeup or style as you have gotten older?
Have fun with it, and remember to be happy! Experiment a little; you might love it!

Yowser.

And she has removed the long hair extensions which supposedly took six hours to put in and cost £2,000.

And how was the rest spent, you ask? I'm glad you asked.

£7,000 in spa treatments,
£20,000 in dental veneers
£1,000 for premium make-up.

And how long did it take her to achieve this flawless look? Evidently, more than two days.

Youth by itself is normally gorgeous. We don't half appreciate it at the time.

I could make a joke and say that I could understand it costing me £30,000, but Katie Holmes?

The bar is ratcheting up in today's market.

It used to be enough to have your own teeth; now they need to be white. And they should be straight. But have you ever noticed how many movie stars' teeth are not, when they are projected on the wide screen? How come is that, when the rest of us are bombarded daily with adverts promising us white, white teeth and a perfect structure. And quickly too!

Whatever happened to wanting our own form of beauty rather than becoming a copy of someone else, because everyone is being made over by the same doctors and their look is the in thing?

And have you seen the photos where Madonna now looks eerily like Kate Winslet? It used to be enough to be Madonna, even when she looked like her real self a la Desperately Seeking Susan.

I refuse to believe it's that hard to be a woman.

Of course, if they have money to burn or want to be unrealistically, perpetually young, they will have to go the extra mile. And then the bar is ratcheted up once again for the rest of us. But first, I'd take a trip, then I might consider taking another one. Then again, I can't conceive of having that kind of money.

How about you?

Karin

People were raving about it. So when Book Girl, who was then in college, wanted to color her hair -- she already has some white in it courtesy of my father who was pure white by age 27 or so -- I thought of this.

We've used it on her hair for several years now. Initially it took care of the brassiness from a bad salon coloring when we hoped to get the lovely blond-brown shade from her early childhood.

While this coloring is said to wash out, and it likely does, the brassiness never showed up as her hair grew out. In that sense, the coloring over this hair was permanent.

We have used many different colors from the line, and we've liked them all. Sometimes she will color her hair every 8 weeks or so, and sometimes we go for months as we did this time.

I will continue to update colors when we color her hair again.

Navaho Bronze light caramel brown
Taken in direct sunlight to show how beautiful it is.

What we think
It covers well and lasts well. It does slightly change the color of your colored hair as it grows out. There is a line of delineation, but it isn't bad.

It smells great and is gentle on the hair. It leaves it feeling silky. The included conditioner is excellent.

We give it a 5 for performance.

We have never used another color product on her, so we can't say how it would compare. We will always choose one of these colors so long as it is available.

Do you use this? or do you use another product?
What color(s) do you use?

Generally we lose our oily T-zone, for example, so there is no longer a natural glow that reflects light.

It is easy to duplicate this glow.

Remember that wherever you have light or reflected light, it draws attention to the area (or causes it to move forward) (and by default moves attention from another area.)

You can use light optically to highlight areas of your eyes, your face, your lips.

Here are some of the tricks I use:
Face
I use a powder with a bit of sparkle in it, creating my own mix. You can find my recipe here.

I highlight up the center of my face with liquid shimmer before my sparkly powder and/or with a powder highlighter after my sparkly powder. This gives a healthy glow. I vary which I do by how I feel or what I want to look like.

Eyes
I generally use some glitter (made for eyes) somewhere around my eyes, usually as dry liner. I don't mind if it drifts some under my eyes or sideways, because it enhances my eyes. I've never had any get into my eyes. It draws your eye to my eyes and balances my face.

Lips
I highlight the center of my lips with a lighter color of lipstick or with gloss. I often use gloss to rim the outer edge instead of a lip pencil.

Many times, but not lately until yesterday and today, I use a Wet n Wild silver glitter gloss in the center of my bottom lip, then smoosh my lips together. I have a couple of W&W colors with glitter too, but the silver is my fave.

I found the gloss one year during Halloween, and I've used it ever since. It is a subtle change, but a nice one.

When my first wand got low, I opened the top, added some Stila Blush Shine gloss, then mixed it well with a chopstick to distribute the glitter through the Stila. I put the little plastic thing back on the top and use it whenever I want a sparkly rose colored gloss. I found I wasn't using the Stila otherwise, and I like the formula.

You can make your own glitter gloss by either taking a clear or colored gloss and adding some fine cosmetic made-for-lips glitter. Any of Aromaleigh's Rocks! glam glitter colors that are safe for lips (or another similar brand) would work.

I have had really good success adding Rocks! Glam Glitter to my lips, just by picking up a bit of the glitter on my lip brush and putting it on top of my lip color. The Rocks! glam glitter has a very soothing feel to it. I cannot speak to any other brands. In general, the smaller the micro particles the better it feels on your lips, but if the particles are too small they don't show up. One of my favorite colors to do this with is shakeitup.

Hair
I use two shine products. The first, I apply to the top of my hair when my hair is wet. I have tried several brands of this. Some are heavier on your hair and work best if your hair is thicker and more coarse, not as fine. My favorite is Redken Glass smoothing serum. At the moment I am using John Frieda Frizz-Ease. I prefer Glass. I don't notice that either product de-frizzes, just gives a bit of light reflection. I have also used a 3rd product, I'll add the name later, but I find it heavier, and it weighs down my hair.

The second product is Paul Mitchell SoftStyle The Shine. I spritz this on the top and sides when my hair is dry. I like this product a lot.

We certainly know that in many countries just having enough money for bread is serious dough -- so this has to be for a western woman, not living in a super expensive metropolitan area. Sorry for the intentional pun!

From almost $7200 as a tween (not my tweens, LOL) to almost $218,000 inclusive of the decade for a woman 50 yrs older and above, their lifetime figure is almost half a mil.

Makes me glad that for a high maintenance woman I'm low maintenance and that my latest haul from Fyrinnae ran me $26.

Puts it in perspective!

Looking at their figures for hair, for example, they aren't super high. Many salons cost a lot more than they are figuring, and of course, many women color their own hair, so that figure drops considerably.

There's an error in their table where they reversed hair and face for the 50-75 year old. You find that by rolling over the info box. Makes their figures off kilter at the end.

They include Botox, fillers, eye brows, lip plumping (no thank you) dermabrasion (only until age 70 -- wonder why that is?!), cosmetics (at $100/mo) (but nothing budgeted for women 50-75) (hmmmm) (obviously there are some flaws)...

From the 30's-40's the figure is $108,660. (20 year span)
50's and over the figure is $169, 274. (25 yr span)

And if you factor in hands and feet -- which is likely low for many women who get fills every two weeks, not 6 times a year, unless that is only for pedicures. Many women get pedicures monthly.

Gulp.

They do not include lipo or breast augmentation.

Well, that's good, LOL!

OK, seriously...does this make you feel better?

And let's not forget wardrobe, which is not included in those figures. Want to hazard a guess at what Michelle Obama spends on clothes right now?

And have any of you seen recent pictures of Faye Dunaway? (She was recently in a Nora Roberts romance movie.) What do you think?

At what point do we decide we have to do something -- or choose not to -- and what if we chose/choose, but are not happy with the results. I think we should all move out of country at some point. Wanna go with me?!

Karin

She's gone to instant long hair. And it is looking real good -- as good as when she cut it short. Of course, it's hard not to look good when you are as pretty as she is. Didn't you love her part in the movie Mad Money! You can see an article and a picture about ithere.

Katie Holmes is to this time frame what Farah Fawcett and Jennifer Anniston were for theirs. Each of them is credited with hair trend setting.

What did it cost?
What the article doesn't tell you is how much money it set her back. I imagine it cost a pretty penny. Care to hazard a guess?

How is it connected to your hair?
What they also don't tell you is how they connect the hair to your hair. There are several ways, and they are all similar to the ways they can add hair to a man who is going bald. It's a long, tedious process, involving knots and glue. So there is the expense of the hair and the expense of the stylist.

But you can't run your fingers through your hair in the same way, and the knots do grow out into the hair as your own hair grows out. The hair extensions need to be removed and put in again (new ones) further up the hair shaft by the roots, maybe not so much if it is done underneath the hair. And I don't think it's the best thing for your natural hair. It puts some stress on it at the points of the glue.

Recently my hair stylist put some in her hair and took them out shortly thereafter for the very reasons I just detailed. She said she'd never do it again.

Source of the hair
And they don't tell you the source of the hair, which is a temple in India where the women offer their hair to the temple's god. Hair that they haven't cut for a lifetime. Hair that is to their waists and longer.

I recently read an article in Allure Magazine about this. Tons of hair is shaved and sold there every year. Imagine! It is swept up, cleaned, sorted, batched, sold, sold again, and made into wigs and pieces. Then sold to the wholesalers who sell to the stylist who sells to us.

The women do not know that. Even if they are taken aback, by how it looks and feels after they shave it, maybe more than a few tears, they feel and are honored for having done it. There is a camaraderie between women as they leave with shorn heads.

And when they are told what happens with their hair, after an initial hurtful surprise, they recover to say that they had given it to the god in gratitude.

While in one sense this both hurt and repulsed me, having traveled in other countries, but not India, I do respect the customs of other places and try to look at it from their eyes. It's hard to leave my sense of liberating women behind. Too bad they aren't paid for their hair. One of the remarks at the end of the article came from the author who said something like this: if they don't care what happens with their hair, should we? That is a tough one.

For the rest of us who know going to short hair is more permanent, we have to think about it. My hair is easy for me to style when it is long, but it would only look great short, if it were styled.

I had great short hair at one point, but I don't think I'll ever do it again. I even had it asymmetrical, which was way cool at the time, and I felt really chic. I was! I was also as young as Katie is now.

And once I had it cut to a mid length, and it instantly added 10 years to my age. Ouch! My stylist agreed, and a couple of days later, she cut it again, and I looked young again. Which I actually was at that time. Interestingly, when it grew out, it never went through that stage where I felt I looked old, I'm not sure why! Perhaps it was the actual cut as it grew out. But I don't want to chance it now!

OTOH, a few years back I saw an older woman who looked like a caricature of herself. I asked my stylist to make sure I never did that to myself. But who knows, I might!

Other ways to go long in an instant
Other ways to go from short to long is to buy a fall or hair pieces or pony tail extensions. There is a mall kiosk, usually staffed with Asian women, in many places. It has beautiful pieces, as well as jewelry-like clips of all sorts to style it or your natural hair with.

I've had a multitude of pieces and falls at one time, and I wore them all. I still have some interesting pieces to wrap around pony tails (you can find these in drug stores at times) but I'm more into simplicity at the moment. (That's funny, if you know me, because I'm not a minimalist in much of my life! I do try to keep things simple, though.) At one time my oldest daughter had these pony tail accessories with streaks of purple or blue, and she wore them all the time. She could wear these to school around her pony tail, whereas they didn't allow the kids' hair to be dyed.

Fresco Phyrra has talked about getting pieces of long 'hair' in bright colors at Sallys, but I haven't looked at Sallys lately. I might enjoy having a couple of them.

A woman I know has blond hair like me, and about a year or so ago, she dyed the back of her hair black. Her stylist had tried to do blue, but it didn't take. Blue would have been remarkable. Black was not her best look.

How to make your long hair look instantly short
It is also possible to fold your long hair under so that it appears to be short. That's a way to see if you'd really like it or not before taking shears to your locks.

One thing about hair, it grows, so nothing is permanent. It will change.

What look do you like best for yourself?
do you have pieces or falls?
