When our son was five, we had one of our most beloved exchange students from Finland. He came when he was 17, and until he was in our house, we didn't realize he was a twin. His brother spent the year in Maine, but on various school holidays he came to visit us or our student went there. During the year his parents and their older sisters also visited us. It was a grand year.

I'd always said I wanted twins, but I never thought I would get them in this manner. I skipped the bulk of the work.

One of the things he introduced me to was Finnish chocolate which is quite superb.

When I visited Helsinki a number of years later, I asked that they stock some of this chocolate for me. Imagine my dismay when his wife said she got me something better. It turned out to be chocolate with black licorice pieces in it. Who'd ever heard of such a thing!

Actually, it wasn't bad. Finns probably eat more licorice per capita than any other country. And when I especially miss him and Finland, I wish for some of the chocolate with licorice which is not to be found in these parts. I've been known to eat a piece of licorice with a piece of chocolate, but it isn't quite the same.

Two of my favorite perfumes are by Lolita Lempica:

with licorice flowers, anise seeds and violets, touches of veviter, tonka bean, vanilla and musk. Its a lovely blend in a beautiful bottle shaped like an apple. (Each bottle has the same shape, just with different colored decorations.)

Lolita Lempicka Midnight (Limited Edition) was introduced in 2004. It is a deeper juice with notes of Aniseed, Ivy, Myrrh, Iris, Amarena, Violet, Jasmine, Tonka Bean, Musk, Vetiver, Benzoin, and Vanilla. Its bottle is also beautiful.

And at one time there was a purse roll-on decorated in the same manner, quite lovely. I actually found it: Lolita Lempicka Midnight Fragrance .24oz ROLL-ON FRAGRANCE CONCENTRE DE PARFUM. It makes me feel good when I am carrying this with me.

To my nose, they smell very similar. But Midnight is headier. Except for the beauty of the bottles, you could choose one over the other and likely not miss the other one.

There is also a lighter version: Lolita Lempicka Eau Legere Light Fragrance Spray (Tester)

Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin for Men is the men's version, introduced in 2000. It is complementary to the women's versions and includes notes of licorice, vanilla, rum, cedar and bark. For myself on myself, I prefer the women's to the men's. The women's is sweeter. The men's is sharper and woodier.

I am quite surprised to see how much perfumes are discounted, if you know to look. Testers are generally discounted a bit more, but sometimes they do not include a cap. In the case of the women's Lolitas, there are no caps, so it is a moot point, making a tester a good buy. I've found through experience that I miss the cap, at least on some bottles.

And on the subject of teas again, there are two herbal teas with licorice that I love: Stash Wild Raspberry tea (hibiscus flowers, rosehips, orange peel, lemongrass, licorice powder, citric acid, raspberry and natural flavors) and Stash Licorice Spice tea (with licorice root, cinnamon, orange peel, star anise, sarsaparilla, vanilla, cardamon, and clove.) They both taste as good as they smell. I wouldn't mind a fragrance in either one.

Karin

And here is Finnish Idols 2007: Ari Koivunen singing Perfect Strangers. Whatta voice! I look forward to seeing him mature.

11:00 Book Girl likes this one. Her first words:

Oh, I like this one! This smells like a night time rendevous! Going to a club... It's definitely for someone in their 20's. Young and spunky. I like it!

She says it's more elegant than skanky, and she didn't even know the name yet.

Avon had Little Black Dress first, but it wasn't this version, and it wasn't with a French name. La Petite Robe Noire, Little Black Dress, AKA Little-Black-Dress-gone-clubbing, is considered a fruity gourmand, right up the alley of the 20-somethings. And it decidedly not noir noir, it is more fuchsia noir.

Notes include Sicilian lemon, licorice, almond, rose, smoky tea, musk and vanilla.

Yesterday I picked up more of the floral. Today I'm picking up more of a somewhat subdued Angel. It is Angel's youngest sister. Sweet and sassy. LVMH uses the word audacious.

Almost cherry or very cherry, it must be the almond thing going on, but it does not smell like the original Jergen's. And then there might even be a touch of Lolita Lempicka -- it's got to be the licorice.

I want that bottle. Or, at least I want to see that bottle.

Octavian has a nice write up at his blog, a play on French words, and a great picture of the window on Rue de la Paix.

I keep hearing this lyric in my head:

Someone left the cake out in the rain.

12:40 Today, it is not moving past this first stage very quickly, but then I gave myself a double hit. The top notes are predominant, but make no mistake, it will move. I will update as the day goes on.

3:00 pretty well gone, just smelled lighter
5:00 gone; but still apparent on Book Girl
5:47 I replenished with a drop on each wrist -- smells less like Angel when used in small doses
7:06 much more of a fruity floral when worn this way

Update December 2009 I got a great compliment while wearing my sample. I still have not bought this in full size, but considering the compliment, I ought to!

It was, on me, basically what I had hoped all the other Burberry incarnations would be. It is called a sparkling woody floral scent.

In paper scent sampling they tag it with Where attitude meets energy. I dunno about that, but I could use some of both, so it's not a bad moniker tag.

The notes are:

Ceylon tea, iris accord, and bluebell; also bergamot, cardamom, pink pepper, mandarin, white musk, vetiver and cedarwood.

What I find interesting on me is that it feels slightly vanilla-y, but it doesn't move into the artificiality that the other Burberrys do on me. I don't catch any tea in it. I always like iris, which might be what gives it a sparkle. Normally I'm not particularly into pink pepper, but I love vetiver and cedarwood, also mandarin and bergamot (see my earlier reviews on mandarin scents -- I'm about to revisit wearing them with spring on the corner.)

It certainly is worth a spritz or two or three. I really spritzed myself once I was pretty sure it was going to be wearable for me. Even at full blast it wasn't too much and didn't head to artificiality. I think it has definite possibilities for spring and summer.

Try it if you are near a bottle. Speaking of the bottle, it is one of my favorites of their bottles. Something about it appeals to me. It's not entirely masculine, but it is reminiscent of a flask, with rounded edges.

It's no secret that Guerlain is probably my most favorite perfume house. I was very pleased to get a chance to sniff these.

Claire sent me these pictures to share with you:

Called The Voyage Collection, the perfumes celebrate 3 great cities- Moscow, New York and Tokyo. They are $220.00 each.

Here's what Guerlain has to say about them:

At Guerlain, it is a tradition. Crossing borders. Encountering new places. Discovering unfamiliar, exotic essences. Capturing the soul of a place by uncovering the emotional enchantment of its raw elements.

In 1828, pioneer and visionary Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain already understood the importance of travelling the world in search of new fragrance sensations. More than just innovative scents, he offered an escape, a voyage for the senses.

“A perfumer must go looking for scents,” observes Jean-Paul Guerlain. And today, in the grand Guerlain tradition of exploring the world's riches, he has created a travel diary of scents, three new fragrances that pay homage to three fascinating cities: Moscow, New York and Tokyo.

They go on to say the following:

Three evocative fragrances that convey the identity and the heartbeat of these electrifying metropolises. Three liquid memories, presented in bottles embellished with drawings by sculptor Serge Mansau and topped with metal caps embossed with the emblematic double G. For each bottle, graphic artist Carla Talopp has devised a log, a scrapbook of cards, images, drawings, iconicphotos and symbols of the spirit of each city.

Here's the scoop on the three fragrances:
Moscow
Have you been there? I've not been to Moscow, but I've been to St. Petersburg.

Moscow has awakened. Sleeping Beauty has opened her eyes, and her heart is fluttering. Moscow the serious has reinvented itself as Moscow the prosperous. Here and there, a hammer and sickle engraved on a building façade remind passers-by of its recent, restless history. But today, a fresh chapter is beginning. Each month, almost every day, Moscow's inhabitants write a new paragraph. They celebrate the arrival of a luxury boutique or a lavish restaurant.Women vie with one another in elegance. Businessmen bustle about. All of them are part of the metamorphosis of a capital city that proudly displays its new modernity...

Moscow's notes:
This one is my favorite! Just yummy!

With its musk, fruit and wood notes,...vanilla and bergamot ...red currants..hint of absinthe, a sparkling lemon, a note of plum...pine needles.

And if you'd like a scent description to carry you away:

...ultra-feminine Paris-Moscow perfume echoes the heart beat that pounds through the Russian capital. This city throbs with life! Strolling through the opulent shopping arcades of the GUM, you are intoxicated by the heady fragrance of white musk and tonka bean. A carnal, sensual and elegant trace of vanilla and bergamot stays with you as you cross the Red Square. As you pass the Bosco Café, a sudden aroma of red currants delights your senses. The Moscow locals are enjoying their brunch, sipping their favourite beverage. Your senses stirred, you head off for some refreshment at the Botanical Gardens. A welcome respite. You close your eyes and watch as images from the day parade past. Electrified, you take in the hint of absinthe, a sparkling lemon, a note of plum. In the distance, you glimpse a verdant forest of pine needles. You can still hear the heart of Moscow beating.

How about New York!
New York, New York!
Woody Oriental

How many films, books and lyrics have sung the praises of the city where anything is possible? A land of dreams and pioneers, the Big Apple welcomes your deepest desires and craziest ambitions. This remarkable city boasts countless styles and atmospheres. A melting pot of communities and personalities, it evokes greatness with its skyscrapers, broad avenues and financial centre. At the same time, it cherishes its 'villages': Little Italy, Chinatown, theWestVillage with its tree-lined streets, low-built houses and tiny restaurants crowded with regulars. Day and night,New York is always bustling. Here, a young woman arrives at the gym as the clock strikes midnight. There, a man and his dog share dinner by the first light of dawn. Only in New York…

Notes:
I didn't find this one particularly sweet. It certainly is apt for a man.

Sparkling and sweet...vanilla, cinnamon, cedar, cardamon, bergamot.

A scent description:

A woody oriental fragrance, sparkling and sweet, Paris-New York excites the tastebuds by transporting the senses to the heart of Manhattan on Christmas Eve. From the elegant Uptown to bohemian Downtown, children are dreaming of their Christmas pudding.Their nostrils quiver. Smells of vanilla and cinnamon float out of kitchen windows. A joyful frenzy of holiday anticipation reigns on Broadway, whose lights seem to sparkle with a new radiance. A pause; serious Wall Street goes quiet. The pedestrians on 5th Avenue finish their last errands. The sky is still the luminous, cloudless blue of a New York winter. The celebrations will start in just a few hours. Already, the air is thick with a scent of cedar, cardamom and bergamot.

Tokyo
Green and floral, fresh and delicate, subtle

Some say that you must see Tokyo before you die.To them, the capital of the Land of the Rising Sun is a required destination. A ground to tread. An atmosphere to soak in. An experience to live, no matter what. Tokyo fascinates, Tokyo charms, Tokyo intrigues, Tokyo intimidates. Tokyo leaves no one untouched. The surprising, completely alien metropolis embodies ultimate modernity.Tokyo is a dense ant hill, gradually stealing from the sea and sky what it can no longer find on the earth. The most daring architects eagerly orchestrate these extensions into space.

The city is immense; it offers an invitation to lose yourself and discover its contrasting districts, smaller cities within a city, which fit together like the animated pieces of a giant puzzle.

Notes:
This one is definitely a tea scent along the lines of the various teas from several different perfume companies. I like this one better though. If you like tea scents, you will love this one.

green and floral, jasmine, violet, cypress, tea and jasmine

And a scent desription:

Green and floral, fresh and delicate, Paris-Tokyo evokes all the subtlety of the Japanese capital.Willful, yet subtle. Ultra-modern, yet bound to its traditions. The sun is still low in the sky; it is the perfect time to awaken your senses in Hibiya Park, a rare green space designed with a Western aesthetic.Very few people are walking; you pass mainly joggers. As you stroll along a pond, the morning dew gives off a fragrance of jasmine and violet, intertwined with Hinoki cypress. You stop in a teahouse, slipping out of the stream of time into a cocoon of tranquility in the midst of turmoil. In this world apart where green tea and jasmine scent the air, you allow yourself be transported by the legendary, almost magical tea-drinking tradition. It is with regret that you leave the ceremony you wish could last forever. But Ginza, the Champs-Elysées of Tokyo, is already calling your name."

Have you tried these?
Did you buy (any of) them? Which is your favorite?

If you are lucky enough to live in her area, you can be included in some of the wonderful things she offers locally, that she is able only to tell us about, those of us who live at a distance.

I have been comparing two new scents by Ayala for the past couple of weeks: Vetiver Racinettes and Immortelle L'Amour. Immortelle L'Amour is due to launch in November. You may currently order samples and pre-order for the launch. VR will launch at an undisclosed time.

First, I really love Ayala's scents and they are beautifully packaged. They are all forms of parfum so they stay close to you vs. a lot of sillage around you and trailing in the room. I love to wear Ayala's scents as the day progresses. I will start with one or two, then either layer again or choose different scents depending on my mood. When I need a boost, I put a couple of drops on my wrists. They keep my mind energized and engaged. They never fail to please me.

One day I would like to meet her in person. To have a personal consultation and a bespoke fragrance would be heavenly!

I recommend getting a sample package from her. That way you can sample several of her scents. They are bound to please if you choose notes you know you love -- or perhaps are intrigued by and would simply like to try for the sake of trying.

Immortelle L'amour:
The maple-like nuances of immortelle absolute are used here along with sweet orange, cinnamon, wheat and three different infusions of vanilla, creating a perfume that truly captures the aroma of cinnamon-pancakes and Tire d’Erable (“taffee on the snow”), an inseparable part of the Quebec heritage in the Maple Harvest Festivals. You’ll find it hard to resist licking this perfume, but it will prove to be a true friend for a love-injured heart.

Famlies: Gourmand

Top Notes: Sweet Orange, Cinnamon
Heart Notes: Rooibos Tea, Broom
Base Notes: Immortelle, Vanilla, Wheat

The immortelle note is juxtaposed with a rich vanilla accord, using a few different varieties of vanilla: a dark absolute from Madagascar, a vanilla CO2 from Bourbon islands, and a tincture of vanilla which I made from plump vanilla pods (seeds and all) from Ghana. Another home-made tincture is used – that of red tea (rooibos), as this material is rarely available in the market as an absolute. Another interesting edible note that I’ve used is wheat absolute. It has a very subtle, iodine-like note, and along with cinnamon CO2 Immortelle l’Amour fills the air with an authentic warm cinnamon-waffles with maple smell… As it dries down, it feels as though an invisible maple taffee is spread upon my skin, sans the stickiness…

Reading the notes of Immortelle does not give you a true estimate of the fragrance, though all the notes can be distinguished. It is not as sweet as it sounds. Yes, I smell maple, real honest to goodness maple syrup, the only kind worth eating. Yes, I can smell the maple syrup that we would drip on snow, then eat as candy. I don't get much vanilla from it. The orange and cinnamon hint around the edges. Interestingly on me, the maple (at first) is reminiscent of patchouli. (I also get this from VR.) It is sophisticated enough to wear on all occasions. While gourmand, it is not immediately recognizable as foody, nor is it terribly sweet. It is a perfect parfum for this time of year.

Each time I have sampled, I have applied one good sized drop, each one on the same wrist. When I first apply these new ones, they are similar in their beginnings, but VR is much less sweet and more herbal. As they continue to drydown, VR actually becomes sweeter on me than Immortelle. Within five minutes Immortelle has segued into its next stage and VR is moving a bit forward too.

Vetiver Racinettes [Ayala tells me it reminded her of the sweet spiciness of rootbeer, which racinette means in French]:
Top notes: Black Pepper, Fresh Ginger, Cardamom, Kaffir Lime Leaf
Heart notes: Haitian Vetiver , Nutmeg Asbolute, Coffee, Spikenard
Base notes: Ruh Khus, Indonesian Vetiver, Vetiver Bourbon, Attar Mitti, Tarragon Absolute, Cepes

Perhaps it is the tarragon that makes it sweet. I love to cook with tarragon. It is so well blended here that I didn't recognize it until I saw it in the notes.

Either one would be equally suitable for a man.

Earlier in my blog I did a series on the samples I ordered from her. If you wear her fragrances, tell us which are your personal favorites. And if you have not ordered from her yet, give yourself a treat.

Ayala is located in Vancouver. I only wish I had known that when I was in Vancouver a year ago. Her fragrances remind me of the city, I'm not quite sure why, unless it is the cosmopolitan nature of it.

Factored into this is the entire idea encompassing tea: a bit of a ceremony; setting aside the time for tea (and conversation); the additions of pastries and other goodies for high tea; and etc.

Bvlgari has led the field in its presentations of tea as perfume. Each can be worn by men or women; some are marketed as unisex; others as women's fragrances. Each fragrance includes notes of the tea it represents. Each has a distinct Bvlgari feel to it, as if they riff off each other, somewhat like jazz, coming back to the original idea, but including elements of each other, while being sufficiently different to warrant fragrances of their own.

Bulgari Au The Vert was introduced in 1993 with extracts of green tea blended with jasmine, rose and citrus. I became aware of it at that time. Ultimately it began to feel too masculine on me. It is very clean and fresh.

Bvlgari Black was introduced in 1998. It is a powerful Chypre with a burnt rubber note to it which makes it unique in its field. While marketed to women, it is definitely a scent that can be worn by a man. The black bottle itself is very rich and masculine looking. A little goes a long way with this one. It is one that gets stronger on me, instead of softening through the day.

Top Notes: black tea, rosewood, and bergamot
Heart Notes: cedar, oakmoss, and vanilla
Base Notes: amber, sandalwood, and musk

Bvlgari Au The Blancwas introduced in 2003, with notes of Artemisia Leaves, Ambrette, White Pepper, White Tea, Musk, and Woody Amber. To me, the pepper is predominant at one point, then the blandness of white tea. It's not sufficiently different than the Green Tea for me to need two bottles.

Au The Rouge is my favorite of the line. It was created by perfumer Olivier Polge.

Top notes: Pink pepper, orange, bergamot
Heart notes: Red tea accord [Roiboos red tea, Yunnan red tea], fig pulp
Base notes: Walnut, musk

If you've had Rooibos tea, you know it has a unique flavor and aroma with a deep rich red color. It is sweet and fruity with a bit of a woody or nutty taste. The perfume captures this well. The top notes are so light and fleeting that while they tickle your palate, they are gone before you know it. Perhaps the pink pepper lingers longer. They are like a memory that colors your experience, but you no longer have any precise details.

The predominate note that lingers over all is the middle note of red tea accord. I find it mixed with a black tea feel, though that it not mentioned in the notes. I do not catch the fig, certainly not to the extent it is found in various fig fragrances. The musk is very weak, if at all, which is just as well, as I have to be careful with musk. The walnut is caught up in the tea accord and is not distinct.

I find it lasts very well. I'm ready to add something to it after a few hours, as it is very single minded in its approach. I like that it is a bit spicier and sweeter than the other teas that Bvlgari presents.

It has a beautiful bottle, shaped like the bottle for Green Tea, but it has accents of red that reflect into the juice.

Which is your favorite in the line, if you wear it?

And it's even better that it's priced at only $57, from the Aqua Allegoria line.

Cherry Blossom is being billed as a

floral green fragrance (Frangrantica).

It also has some green tea in it, which is generally off-putting to me and puts it more squarely into a masculine feeling scent that I usually cannot wear. (I do wear masculine scents, just not ones with tea.) But in this fragrance the green tea takes a back seat and never takes over the fragrance the way, say, Arden's Green Tea does. I don't discern that it is there.

Notes: bergamot, green tea, cherry tree flower, cherry, peach, powder accord.

I think I like this fragrance because I have nothing exactly like it. Generally department store fruity fragrances smell so artificial on me that I think, bleh. On the other side, vintage Rochas Femme (peach) is one I wear less well than vintage Madame Rochas (love this still.)

But this one seems to sit well, albeit it is short lasting, which is OK by me, because I like to change fragrances as the day goes on.

A few years ago I bought a Guerlain Cherry Blossom parfum, then never really wore it, because it was so sweet. Unfortunately, I believe much of it has evaporated from the bottle, despite being in the dark. The bottle is undeniably cute, but it was too much money to spend for something I never wore. Nonetheless, I'm glad I have it, and there is still some in it. I just wouldn't buy it again.

Because this version is light, I envision spritzing a pretty heavy dose. I'm dabbing my sample liberally. But, you know, if it makes me happy, go for it!

How it makes me feel
There is a carefree, luminescent quality to it. It makes me happy and light hearted. I can always use a heavy dose of that~

What do you think?
Have you smelled this? Do you wear it? Have you worn any other of the Guerlain Cherry Blossoms?

Where to buy this?
If it were me, I'd call (702-732-7008) or email Claire (GuerlainPalazzo.STORE@lvmhuspc.com) at the Guerlain boutique in Las Vegas. There is no sales tax and no shipping charge for mailing in the US. (I think you'd pay tax if you lived in Nevada.) (I can't speak for international shipping.) I'm letting him know today that this is one I want to have.

They are the best in this store. I was recently at the boutique in the Breakers. They were nice, but it doesn't compare.

Let me know if you decide to buy it, and tell them you heard it from me.

Here are some favorite lemon fragrances or body products
Go Smile Lemonade Smile toothpaste
This is delicious, as well as effective. Not too tart; just right! Part of the Go Smile system, but can be used on its own.

Did I say yummy?!

Have you tried it? You should, if you love lemon.

NYX Round Glosses
These have a lovely taste and scent of lemon. It doesn't last long, but it is very nice while it lasts!

And the colors are equally delish. Follow my link to see several of them on my lips. Have you tried any of them? What color is your fave?

C. O. Bigelow Lemon Body Cream
This might be one of the first ones anybody thinks about. I like the scent, but find it a little heavy.

Here's a travel set with other goodies:

Do you like this one?

C.O. Bigelow Essential Oil

Kiehl's Superbly Restorative Body Lotion 6.8 oz $35.
This has a delightful soft lemon scent. And it's a very nice lotion too!

Guerlain Eau de Guerlain
This is lovely for men or for women. Refreshing, but not overly fresh. 1974

Top Notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Basil, Petitgrain, Caraway .
Middle Notes: Rose, Jasmin, Patchouli, Carnation, Sandal .
Base Notes: Amber, Moss, Musk.

Fresh Lemon Sugar
Avon has a similar fragrance. Both are good. Avon's is more fleeting.

Jean Nate Very popular at one time.
When you read the name, do you remember the scent? It imprints on the memory. Do you have some? Do you wear it?

Top Notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Lavender Mid Notes: Rose, Jasmine, Muguet, Geranium, Spices Dry Down: Amber, Musk, Patchouly

L'Occitane Honey and Lemon
We feel the honey is stronger than the lemon in most of the products.

This is a fave of Book Girl and me:

And a cream, which we haven't tried, but I do love their creams:

Haven't tried this one, but I like their glosses, in general.

This is more lemony:

This is a delightful, refreshing mix:
