    Chocolate Amere by Il Profumo $135 for 100 ml or $3 for .7 ml at Lucky Scent is chocolate the way it ought to be done.

    Lucky Scent carries 16 Il Profumo fragrances.

    It is supposed to be for men, but seriously, it's great for women too. It is not like L'Instant for Men, which also has some chocolate. It is more incensy and less sharp.

    Do you remember how much I disliked Iris Ganache on me? -- that it was the sort of chocolate scent I didn't care for and way too sweet? Ditto for the Chocolate Base Note from Creative Scentualization...

    Chocolate Amere, by contrast, is a semi-dry, almost dark chocolate scent. I'm sure it is the sandalwood and incense that takes it to a new dimension.

    Chocolate Amere Notes: galbanum, nutmeg, ginger, flowers, cocoa, sandalwood, incense.

    L'Instant for men notes: woody with jasmine, citrus and star anise, then hibiscus, patchouli, sandalwood, lapsang tea and bitter cacao bean.

    I find Chocolate Amere a bit sweeter than L'Instant for men. The chocolate is more apparent. Bookgirl pronounces it, "Delicious!" She doesn't care for L'Instant for men.

    I find both fragrances similar. She doesn't see any similarities at all. The difference for me is the Patchouli in L'Instant for men. This is a drier Patchouli, not a sweet patchouli, but as it softens, it gets sweeter from the other notes.

    Do you wear either of these?
    What do you think? I have to be in the mood to wear L'Instant for men, and it has to soften for me to really like it on me. Chocolate Amere creates a mood, is wearable from the beginning, and might even keep me from chocolate, not a bad thing altogether.

    Bois D'Orage (AKA French Lover -- which may be sweeter and a little tobacco-y) (or Thunder Wood -- Malle flier) [or better yet: Thunderstorm Warning -- that's the sense I get out of it!] [$190 for 100 ml or $5.99 up for a sample at The Perfume Court] is a heady men's fragrance. It is very crisp and dry.

    Pierre Bourdon is the nose for this one. I have loved and worn two of his other fragrances: Dior's Dolce Vita and Malle's Iris Poudre.

    Notes: Patchouli, incense, tree moss, ceder, Angelica, galbanum and pimento.

    I almost put this in my dry Patchouli category, because it is Patchouli that blasts out at me. It is much, much, much too strong and dry for me, even with the tiniest squirt, when I first spritzed it from my sample.

    Of course I would have known to go easier, if I'd paid attention that it is a men's fragrance, even though I wear some. I expected it to be sweeter. It is definitely not sweet.

    But now, hours later, it is a rich, sophisticated "skin enhancer" as the sample flier states. I doubt anyone can smell it except for me unless they get close, which is how I like my fragrances.

    It is a terrific men's scent. I'm more circumspect when recommending it for a woman -- if you can get past the initial blast or if that first blast is different on you than on me it would work. The Non-Blonde can wear this one.

    From the flyer again:

    ...a dramatic, almost Wagnerian composition that expresses the contained sophistication of the smart man.

    Nathan Branch loves this one. He has beautiful pictures at his blog. He is the quintessential man for whom this was designed.

    This is how SMT feels about this fragrance-- if only it had smelled that way on me! I like to think of angel's singing when a fragrance really works. I'm going to remember this quote:

    Flora Gucci is a wonderful new fragrance, consisting of

    notes of citrus, peony, rose, osmanthus, sandalwood and patchouli.

    When it first came out, it was exclusive to a particular store, but now it can be found more locally.

    To me, it is a sort of cross between The One and Elle.
    It is softer than The One, and a little less patchouli than Elle. But the patchouli in it, I'm sure, cuts the sweetness of the other floral accents, as does the citrus.

    On me, the notes that are predominate are rose and citrus. The citrus puts it squarely in the younger group of consumers that Gucci is hoping to entice. It also makes it wearable for me, as I have trouble with roses being scrubbers.

    Frida Giannini, Gucci's creative director, says that

    Flora is lighter, the floral scent of course evokes a younger consumer, and she has a hedonistic, daring side. I don't want to say that Flora is the daughter of Gucci by Gucci but maybe the younger sister.

    Flora is probably a second cousin twice removed from Gucci by Gucci, which is far more straight up sweet patchouli.

    I even get a subtle memory of Bulgari Femme.

    Meantime, in the midst of cold weather, wearing this fragrance, it feels as if a cool breeze is bringing the scents of spring. The fragrance is perfectly balanced. It stays true all day, though it is nice to refresh it. It doesn't have a lot of movement. Rather, the notes appear together in soft brightness, just as a spring day.

    Lavender is a note that is real iffy on me. Sometimes I like it; sometimes not. Sometimes it feels feminine; other times it is just too masculine.

    How about you? Do you like and wear lavender?

    Lavender supposedly has soothing properties and promotes restfulness and good sleep. I suppose that is true if you like lavender. But for me, it either is or it isn't. There are times when lavender does seem like a good addition for bedtime to aid in sleep, but if the lavender has a negative value to me, then it is more wake-inducing than sleep-inducing.

    There are a number of fragrances built around lavender, and lavender is a note in a lot of men's fragrances. I don't even particularly like it in men's fragrances, if it is a lavender note I don't like. Perhaps it is a function of what synthetics are used to mimic lavender or whether it is natural lavender or not, if that even exists. Perhaps real lavender is too fleeting or subject to change. Or it may entirely be a function of where the lavender originates. There are huge fields planted in various places, used in the perfume industry.

    One of the blogs I enjoy is French Word a Day. She has shown pictures a couple of times of an aunt making a woven sachet out of lavender. Perhaps she will leave a message here and give me a direct link to it. That's the kind of hand craft that is interesting to learn to do. It looks lovely when finished.

    Here are some lavender fragrances that I do like. I'll add others as time goes on or as I have time.

    Kilian A Taste of Heaven absinthe verte

    Inspired by Absinthe, bittersweet nectar of poets.

    This is a men's fragrance, but easily worn by a woman. From The Artificial Paradises for men, the lavender in A Taste of Heaven absinthe verte is lush and sweet; it isn't pungent or artificial. When it softens over hours, the lavender is barely visible under the whole of it. It doesn't become the whole of it.

    A little incensy; a little boozy; a lot sexy.

    Notes:
    Fresh Note: Bergamot Calabria Oil
    Floral Notes: Geranium Bourbon Oil, Orange Flower absolute, rose Turkish absolute, green absinthe oil, lavender bareme oil, lavandin abrialis oil, lavandin green absolute oil, lavandin green concrete
    Amber Notes: Patchouli Indonesian oil, oakmoss extract, costus oil @ 1%, ambrarome absolute, vanilla beans absolute, tonka beans hyper essence.

    Perfumer : Calice Becker

    My first impression is Vanilla and Lavender, but much, much smoother and richer than BBW. No comparison. At it's final stages, there is a spiciness to it.

    I haven't bought this, but it is a possibility if I find I can wear this lavender as well as I'm wearing it today.

    I just got off the phone with him. Here's what his info says:

    The best lavender is from the north of France, and that is where Kilian gets his.

    Added late at night: after respritzing the one time, I got busy and didn't layer up to something else or respritz. Now, hours and hours later, I smell no lavender, just an intriquing sort of incensy sweetness. Have you tried this one?

    Tova by Tova
    If you've ever watched Tova on TV, you know how persuasive she can be. She is a lovely woman, married to Ernest Borgnine. This is her first of several fragrances. To hear her tell it, people follow her and whoever else is wearing it, whenever and wherever they are wearing it, to find out what it is.

    By day, the alluring Tova Signature scent envelops you in an unforgettable blend of bergamot, jasmine, and lavender.

    By evening, Tova Nights(R) fragrance enchants with its aromatic combination of lilies, lilacs, subtle spice, and a hint of musk.

    I like it, but it isn't me. I'm sure if I loved, loved, loved it, and wore it sufficiently, people would stop me too. It is an intriguing scent, different than anything else on the market.

    Lavender Vanilla Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy SLEEP
    Just as it says, lavender vanilla. At one time they had it in many formulas: lotion, pillow spray, oil, shower gel. I'm not sure what is available now, or if you can only find it during their big sales.

    This is sweet and comforting, whereas Kilian's is lush and sexy.

    I don't find it makes any difference in my sleep one way or the other. It is disconcerting to smell it on my pillow. I'd rather smell my own fragrance.

    Arbonne Unwind Unwind Rejuvenating Body Mist
    I have no idea if there is lavender in this. But I'm reviewing it with lavender because of its relaxation properties. I took it on my trip in case the world got to be too much with me, LOL! I did spritz it a bit in the car. I threatened to spritz my kids if they got too out of hand, but I never had to do it. It comes in a mist, a massaging oil, a shower gel, a lotion...

    Notes: Chamomile and ylang ylang
    The calming, botanically-based all over mist designed to hydrate the skin while imparting aromatherapeutic benefits of the Unwind essential oil blend. Recommended for all skin types. 4 fl. oz./118 mL ( 4 fl. oz./118 mL ) Price: $16.00

    If BBW Lavender Vanilla is a sledge hammer, Unwind is a whisper. There is hardly any scent to it at all.

    Does it work? Dunno. But I got there and back all right -- and I wondered before we started. 8 days driving/riding with a full car is a lot! What do you think, did it help?

    Neil Morris spoke to me about this lovely, dark, lush fragrance:

    I was walking one October in New York City, which is also called Gotham. It was a particularly warm evening, very dark, almost menacing in an intriguing way ... almost intriguingly menacing, it spoke to me of things hiding in the dark ... there was a kind of Sherlock Holmes feeling. It was a magical night, going to a couple of different clubs. It was intriguing, looking down dark alley ways -- a very unusual night in Gotham City, like a Batman Gotham scent, like a slice of pie, a portion of your life and trying to recapture it.

    The notes are:

    Top notes: Black Pepper, Yuzu
    Mid notes: Rose, Narcissis
    Base notes: Amber, Pearl Musk (lovely, creamy as Neil described it), Myrtlewood, Tonka absolute, Labdanum, Russian Leather, Redwood, and Ambergris

    This fragrance is as lovely as the notes make it sound. It is creamy and smooth, intriguingly sweet in a dark way. It is not a floral sweetness, but it is rich with the amber and tonka, tempered with leather and woods. The pearl musk is lovely and creamy. It is not a musk that hits you in the face and just keeps on and on.

    This fragrance weaves a spell. I left it for last, but it could have been first. Somehow for me, there is even the mingled scent of car exhaust in the air, but this is a good thing. In that respect it reminds me, but lightly, of one of Andy Tauer's scents, Lonestar Memories, but they aren't really alike.

    Again, the price is $150 for 2 oz of perfume, not edp or edt.

    Continuing working through my samples:

    The Sovereigns of Egypt by Romea d’Ameor is available at Lucky Scent $135 for 100 ml or $3 for .7 ml.

    Notes: melon, passionfruit, lychee, cloves, orchid, jasmine, magnolia, rose, heliotrope, vetiver, iris, balsam of Peru, coconut, peach, vanilla, amber, musk

    This one is a sweet, fruity fragrance. Fortunately, I don't catch much, if any, melon in it. It is not like Hermes Un Jardin Apres La Mousson which is basically unwearable for me. I smell more lychee (sweet) and cloves with a floral touch.

    There's enough spice in it to make it interesting.

    But basically it is sweet. With a tiny kick. A bit intriguing.

    Do you wear this one?
    It's a little too sweet for me. At one drop per wearing, it would last me forever.

    I promised yesterday that I would compare these two.

    I came across a site where you can compare fragrances. If you like one, what else might you like (or vice versa.) You can see it here.

    When I went there, while waiting for my sample of VdNE to arrive, I was surprised to find they listed VdNE like this:

    VOL DE NUIT EVASION 2007 (ATTRAPE-COEUR)

    I had a bit of AC, so I wondered if I had simply bought the same thing with a new name. But checking further, the answer was no, these are two different fragrances.

    However, when I wear them, comparing them, as I did yesterday afternoon and again today, there isn't enough difference in the two of them on me to warrant having both, unless I wanted one for daytime and one for evening.

    The notes for VdNE are [Fragrance Family - oriental woody] : peach, rose, jasmine, amber, iris, woods, vanilla.

    The notes for AC/GA are [Fragrance Family - Floral, Amber, Musk]:
    Top: a burst of spell binding green notes
    Heart: generous, floral/fruity notes (rose, jasmine, peach and tuberose)
    Base: leather, powdery and dry wood notes (Amber, Sandalwood, Vanilla and Musk)

    or: green, fruity, rose, jasmine, peach, tuberose, amber, sandalwood, vanilla, musk, leather.

    It's only fair to say that those who love AC/GA do not, for the most part, like VdNE. I am testing vials; I am not spraying, so there is very little sillage and I have to smell up close to smell either one.

    I asked all 3 of my girls to smell both fragrances on me several times. Without exception, if they smelled AC/GA (or VdNE) first, they could not smell the other one. (I had no problem.)

    AC/GA is much richer and deeper. College Girl said it smelled more musky. I don't notice that at all particularly. I notice the leather and amber in it, especially the amber. The leather is completely wearable. It is not musty. It certainly smells very good. VdNE is lighter and more powdery, though both have some powder essence to them.

    I asked CG again just now which she preferred on me. I have not reapplied since this morning.

    She smelled VdNE first, then AC/GA. She said she preferred VdNE, "the deeper one." I said, "No, the other is deeper." She said, "Then VdNE has lasted longer." I think it is again, because she smelled the one first. To me, AC/GA is the deeper, fuller, more exotic one, and has lasted longer. But I like them both. Earlier in the day, my younger girls picked VdNE because it was "lighter."

    There you have it. It appears to be a toss up, on me. I would think a man would prefer to wear AC/GA. But hey, give both a try! As I said, I like them both, and I would love to drench myself in spray to get a feeling for when they have heavier sillage.

    AC costs EUR 130 for 125 ml. VdNE (edt) is EUR 46 for 50 ml.

    Addendum: the plot thickens! Evidently, according to French Guerlain sources, VdNE is the edt version of AC/GA edp version. Why on earth would they not keep the same name, AC/GA! No wonder they smell so similar, but one is lighter.

    If you haven't had the experience of trying Guerlain's Parfum de Champs Elysees, do yourself a favor and find some to sniff.

    Here's a case where the parfum is very different than either the edp or edt of the original Champs-Elysees. Well, maybe not the original original as that came out in 1904, but the new original from 1996. Confused yet?

    For me, frankly, it is a very good thing that it borrows the name but not the scent, as the 1996 Champs-Elysees and I do not agree -- or rather we agree to disagree. It is considered a fresh floral, and on me it is just way too sharp, and it gets sharper as the day wears on. It never softens. No can do this at all. Period. But I do like the bottle and I have a mini. But I do not wear it. At all. Never, ever. Every time I think, well maybe my tastes have changed or my chemistry, and I try a bit, it is definitely a scrubber.

    Notes for original Champs Elysees
    Top Notes: Mimosa leaves, rose, herbs, almond flower, cassis berries and leaves
    Heart Notes: Mimosa, buddleia blossom
    Base Notes: Almond bark, amber, hibiscus seeds

    or

    A Blend Of Floral Rose, Blackcurrant, Mimosa Leaves, Hibiscus, And Almond Wood.

    Enter the Parfum de Champs Elysees. All that I would have liked for the 1996 Champs Elysees to have smelled like and represented, the Parfum de Champs Elysees has in spades.

    And I was afraid to try it. I smelled it, but hesitated to put it on my skin, even though it smells significantly different from the get-go.

    It is absolutely lovely. It stays close to the skin. So far, I have had no success in finding the notes, though I will ask Claire later today.

    Because it is Guerlain, it is superb. It triumphs over other brands with ease.

    I get the feeling of a spring day in Paris. There is something a bit spicy in it, maybe a bit of carnation. It is not particularly green. It isn't a typical white floral that I cannot wear. It isn't huge like tuberose, though it is creamy. It doesn't move through stages, but it softens. In a way, it reminds me of the smoothness of some of the Caron parfums.

    It will get under your defenses.

    Continuing to work through my many samples:

    If you are looking for a sea breeze sort of fragrance that is more than a bit different from Guerlain's Sous le Vent from 1933 that also has a salty note, Mr. Hulot’s Holiday may be just what you are looking for.

    My first impression, even before I searched the notes, is a brisk, salty breeze under a cloudy sky. It is quite yummy, tantalizingly clear, but not sharp.

    Mr. Hulot’s Holiday Notes: The salty breath of the breeze off the Mediterranean, driftwood, rocks covered with seaweed and the smell of old leather suitcases

    Sous le Vent Notes: lavender, tarragon, basilic, citrus, carnation, oakmoss, iris, woods, patchouli.

    My only objection to MHH is that it wasn't long-lasting the first time (but it was the second), yet while it lasts, it opens my consciousness to memories of a time away. I prefer it to SlV, which is a bit too masculine for me -- it might be the lavender.

    Have you tried this one?
    It evokes the thought of sitting on a wooden deck at the beach with a cool drink, perhaps a lime daiquiri or a tall iced tea, watching the people go by.

    Have you see the 1953 French film Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot?
    I believe I would enjoy the comedy about Mr. Hulot's vacation as he accidentally causes havoc. It sounds right up my alley.

    And again, the price is right! $60 for 100 ml of perfume water or $60 for 15 ml of absolute both from Lucky Scent.
