March 11th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Brows, Concealer, Eye liner, FOTD, Foundation, Guerlain, Highlighting, Jordana, Lipstick, Mascara, Meow, Mineral, NYX, Pencils, Rouge or blush
I felt like bright turquoise today, and that made me think immediately of the colors that Aromaleigh has.
Eyes: all Aromaleigh, except where noted:
Crease: caribe, pure hue
Outer corners: aqua nightmare, gothic lolita
Inner corners: endless sea, rocks! sonic eyes
Drylined upper and lower: moonagedaydream, rocks! sonic eyes
Tight Lined upper and wet lined lower: Jordana Sterling Blue
Brows: Clinique soft blonde pencil
Mascara: Guerlain Le2 (double sided with small brush for lower lashes)

Foundation: Lancome minerals — still trying to figure out how — and how much — to use; see how funky my nose looks here? I saw it in sunlight and took care of it. Generally I leave everything off my nose for this reason.
Powder: Lancome minerals
Highlight: AL magnolia blossom
Blush: AL english rose (a powder, not a blush, that didn’t show up, so used it across my face, lightly)
Blush: Meow Masterpiece Water Lilies

Lips:
NYX Lips Hebe — this one doesn’t migrate. It’s got a lovely sheen to it, doesn’t feel slippery — and it doesn’t move into liplines around the mouth.

February 9th, 2010 — Amber, Bergamot et al, Cartier, Guerlain, Perfume review, Perfumes, Tonka Bean, Woods
Spurred on by hearing a description of this on another, I reached for my bottle of Delices de Cartier parfum last night and decided to give it another go.
Generally speaking, I do not like cherry in a fragrance. I bought a bottle of Guerlain’s cherry a number of years ago, because I fell in love with the bottle, but it keeps refilling itself, for the few times I reach for it, it doesn’t seem to go down. Each year Guerlain has tweaked it a little, but I’ve only bought it once.
I find I’m gradually moving into another price range of perfumes. This one I resisted buying because of the price point and because I don’t usually care for cherry. (edt is either $75 or $105 and parfum is $160 — and of course, wouldn’t you know, the only one I liked really was the parfum. I’m not surprised that I like the best. I usually don’t go for parfums as I prefer sprays and I don’t notice a lot of difference, but in this one, the parfum is a spray and there is a difference.) I ended up trading for a partial bottle, which works just fine for me, as it is rare for me to finish a bottle. I’d rather have variety until I know how much I will reach for it.
Cartier’s fragrance, which means Delights, is packaged in one of the most beautiful bottles ever designed — a red and clear, cut-glass bottle topped with a flower centered with a large square crystal. With this fragrance they moved successfully into another fragrance type, that of the fruity/floral gourmand.
It’s notes are Iced Cherry (Morello), Sicilian Bergamot, Pink Pepper, Violet, pink, white and yellow Jasmine, Freesia, Amber, Tonka Bean, Musk, Sandalwood.
Last night, I kept coming back to smell my arm, and it was Delight-ful. At the same time, because it is not something I usually wear, it was a bit jarring to me and didn’t seem like ‘me.’ But I liked it well enough to give it a go again today.
I spritzed a small spritz before heading to the movies, transferred it from one arm to the other, and this time, it was lovely, not jarring. Imagine, when I came home, that my house smelled wonderful. (People always tell me it does, but I’m not able to identify what it is particularly.) This time, what I smelled under it all, was the small spritz I had spritzed, then walked down the hallway carrying the sillage with me. (No one remarked about the fragrance on me. I really do wear fragrance for myself. If I wore enough that others would particularly notice, I’d overwhelm myself.)
Because I loved the way the house smelled, I re-spritzed once more for the day. One tiny spritz — remember this is parfum!
In this fragrance, there is a difference between the edt and the parfum (which is a spray) (there is no edp). I prefer the parfum, as it is richer and deeper. The edt seemed brighter and less ‘real’ if that makes sense.
I don’t know how often I’ll reach for this one. Perhaps the constellation of stars must be in proper alignment. But when it works, it is a wonderful addition to their line that includes Must, Panthere, Le Baiser Du Dragon, and Eau de Cartier (Christine Nagle was the nose for that as well as for Délices — and they are really completely different, but equally compelling.)
I find the cherry neither tart nor sickeningly sweet. If you’ve ever eaten Rainier cherries, which I particularly love, that is the feeling I get from this fragrance. Rainier cherries are large with sweet flesh and are considered the best of the best. The skin is yellow to red. They sell for $1/each in Japan, but lucky for me, they are about $5 a pint here and are available only once a year. Considering that I don’t like cherries and I love these…I wait each year for the season, now that I’ve found them.
It’s no surprise that Cartier which is known for its opulence would choose an opulent cherry as well, for this is not a typical teen cherry…oh no, this is grown up, voluptuous, Delight-ful, complete with spirit and verve. This is a grown up woman, used to the best in life, who loves to experience life. Her gourmand fragrance is not chocolate. You better watch out for her — she’s a little bit saucy and unpredictable, but that only makes her interesting.
I’m with her.
Do you like this one?

February 7th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Beauticontrol, DuWop, Guerlain, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, Mary Kay, Techniques, Too Faced
There are a lot of tricks to the trade when you are talking about lips. Lip prep is a big part of it.
Lip Prep
Remove old lipstick staining from your lips with a gentle eye makeup remover or facial makeup remover.
Dry Lips
Always use a balm under your lipstick and consider some form of lipgloss over the top, at least in the center.
Here are some common complaints and their solutions:
Problem # 1 My lips are rough Remove all the dead skin.
Some people use a toothbrush, but I find that harsh.
I first used a 2 step program when Adrian Arpel had one that sold at Bloomies. It is possible to use a facial scrub on your lips, but the grains are larger, so I prefer to use one made especially for lips.
Here are some products I like that are gentle, but work. I like both of these equally. I prefer the Beauticontrol Balm, but both work equally well. I use whichever balm I feel like, but I always use the proper set together, if I am using the exfoliant from one brand, I use its balm.
Beauticontrol Lip Apeel $19.50 (1.25 oz) (2 step, like MK), can buy Balm separately for $10 (.25 oz)
Mary Kay Satin Lip Lip Mask, follow with MK Lip Balm — $9.50 each for .3 oz each
A friend said this set cleared up her lips after using countless other balms that did not work.
Problem #2 Lipstick migrates into the lines outside my lips
Be sure to moisturize well around your lips. This will make the lines less prominent.
Be careful with dark shades, as this shows up more.
Use a less gooey formula or be careful how heavily you apply.
I find some of the lipsticks made to last all day are too drying for my lips, so I work around it.
Line lips with a pencil to hold your lipstick inside the line better
This works up to a certain point in age or appearance. After that, an invisible pencil works better.
You can use a pencil that matches your lipstick, one that contrasts (less modern look)(a dark visible line around a lighter lipstick), or one that matches your lip tone.
If you are using a color that is different than your lipstick color, you can actually change the shade — experiment with a favorite lipstick and a variety of pencils. You can do this on the back of your hand or just as you apply your lipstick for the day. This gives you almost an infinite number of shades with a combination of lippies and pencils.
If your lip pencil has a lipstick brush at one end, you can use that brush to feather or move the lip pencil color into your lip area or use it to apply your lipstick.
You can use the pencil first and line only the outside edges of your lips, or you can fill in the whole lip a bit (I prefer that method) or you can line after you apply your lipstick (I like this method too.)
Use one of the clear/invisible lip pencils that are on the market to line outside your lip line outside the color of lipstick you are using
At a certain point, this works better than using a colored lip pencil (or can be used in conjunction with a colored one.) It stops the lipstick from migrating.
You can find these in several brands. Avon used to make one.
DuWop reverse liner is great. One made by Too Faced is supposed to be very similar.
Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift is a magic product
This cleared up my lips in one application after I hurt them with stinging lip plumpers. Every other lip balm known to man did not work. (At the time I didn’t have Arbonne’s that might have worked.) It is slightly colored, like a concealer, so you can use it to mask your lip color to make other lipsticks true to their shade, or to bring your lips back to a natural color if they are stained from other lip colors.
It’s an expensive product, but one I will never be without.
Problem # 3 My top and bottom lip are not balanced; one is thinner than the other.
Use a lip pencil to draw at the top of the outside edge of your thinner lip. Experiment with drawing outside of your lip line to see if this looks natural or not. It depends on whether the outer edge of your lip has a distinct edge to it or not. You can often see on magazine pages that this has been done to many of the models. You might have to look closely, but they have done it. You want it to look natural in RL. Be sure to make sure that the points of your upper lip are centered under your nostrils. It looks strange if it is not.
You can use a slightly lighter shade of lipstick on your thinner lip. Or highlight only the center of that lip with gloss. Or use one of the techniques below for fuller lips.
Problem # 4 I want my lips to look fuller
Any of these ideas work, or a combination. It is possible to use one of these ideas on only one lip.
Use a darker lip color at the outer edges of your lips than the center.
You can do this by using one lipstick and layering the other over it in the middle. Or you can simply use one shade on the other edges and another on the inner, blending a bit where they come together. It isn’t necessary to use a lip brush; you can work right with the tubes.
Use a navy eye pencil on the outer edge of your lips. Carefully. This really works!
Be sure to blend this into your lip color. Use a shade of navy that isn’t too dark for your lip tone.
Use lip gloss in the center of your lips
Concentrate it on your bottom lip, then smoosh your lips together.
Use a lipstick made to enhance your lips.
Be careful what formula you use. I hurt my lips by using the same lipstick daily (wonderful color though!) by Cover Girl.
Buxom lip gloss by Bare Escentuals is very good and gentle. I love all the ones I have.
This is a beautiful set:
These are more neutral:
These are a little darker:
LipFusion is also good, perhaps a little less gentle. It comes in many colors.
Problem #5 My lip edge sometimes looks stained.
There are lip pencils that are skin toned. Use this carefully outside your lipstick color. You can also use a concealer for this purpose. The lip pencil will hold the line better than concealer, if lines outside the lip are a problem.
Rim your lips with a gloss. This really works and is a lovely look. You can choose a gloss that matches your lipstick, is lighter, a close shade or one that is different (say, a light apricot rim of gloss around a pink lipstick.) Experiment! I first saw this at the Beauté site. It really makes lips look both fuller and more youthful.
Problem # 6 I eat my lipstick off
Use a longer lasting formula or one that is less gooey when you know you are going to be eating.
I haven’t found that blotting lipstick or powdering makes the lipstick last any longer. And I do not care for the way powder makes my lipstick feel. I do, however, like using AL Rocks! glitter over lipstick to add color or sparkle. It seems silkier than powder. I don’t know if it adds any lasting power.
Try to be aware of working at your lips with your tongue or teeth.
Before you take a sip of a drink, lick your lips a bit. It forms a barrier between your lipstick and your cup or glass.
Use your fingers to wipe any lipstick off your cup or glass. It will make you more aware if you are losing more lipstick the next time you drink. Plus it looks nicer to those around you.
Use your teeth, barely your lips, to take food off silverware.
Break bread up into smaller pieces so you aren’t using your lips to bite into it. Who wants to literally eat lipstick!
Cut up large sandwiches, such as hamburgers, and eat with a fork. Or blot your lipstick before eating. You don’t want to get lipstick on your teeth or chin.
Problem # 7 I just feel like I look old
Update your look to follow one of the modern trends that work for you. Rim your lips with gloss — it’s surprising how well this works! Try it!
Try a stronger color in lipstick or try a lighter lipstick. Or both. Make sure you are wearing a tone and a shade that compliments your coloring.
If you change your hair coloring, you might have to change the depth of tone in your makeup, including lips, blush, and eyes.
Make use of the techniques above.
If you don’t have consultants for either MK or Beauticontrol, let me know and I will give you contact info for people I know who are consultants.

February 1st, 2010 — Comparing, Guerlain, Honey, Perfume review, Rose, Tobacco, Tonka Bean

Once in a while a really beautiful new perfume comes on the scene. Guerlain Tonka Impériale is one of them. It is destined to be a classic. Part of the L’Art et la Matière collection, it is one of the best in that line.
It’s rare for a perfume to hit all the right notes, be neither too sweet nor too dry, to be perfection on all levels. Tonka Impériale is the best of the best. It is poetry and art in a third dimension.
Do I sound too complimentary? Try it, and you will agree.
Notes: rosemary, almond, tobacco, honey, facets of hay and balsamic, tonka bean, of course vanilla, and the famous Guerlain Guerlinade, including rose. Maybe some orange blossom. Described as having almost a gingerbread quality, but I don’t catch that.
Thierry Wasser is the genius behind this fragrance, and I have to admit that I cannot wear his Iris Ganache. It is much too sweet and heavy on me. It never softens, but just keeps going. But here, in Tonka Impériale, he has removed the elements that gave me trouble.
Let’s talk about some of the notes:
Almond — this weaves its way through the fragrance, along with vanilla. I happen to love almond in a fragrance.
Honey — this is a gentle form of honey, not that acrid honey that is in some that is unwearable to me.
Rosemary and hay — I can’t smell it, but I’m guessing it gives it balance and takes away the sweet gourmand and brings it into herbs and essences.
Tonka bean — one of my favorite notes, a sort of vanilla-y scent, but not as sweet; some feel it adds a chocolate sense, but I feel it is the gourmand sense coming through.
Tobacco — yummy, even for those of us who do not smoke.
How does it compare to L’Instant Magic?
It has the almond note, but more vanilla and is headier. Think of Magic as a fragrance for the office, and Tonka Impériale as sex in a bottle, but not so earthy that you couldn’t wear it in the daytime to work or play.
How does it compare to YSL Cinema?
YSL Cinema is all almond, and it is less sweet. Tonka Impériale has the addition of vanilla, and while it is sweet, it isn’t sweet-sweet like Pink Sugar, for example.
How does it compare to Spiritueuse Double Vanille?
Spiritueuse notes: vanilla, benzoin, frankincense, spices, cedar, pink pepper, bergamot, Bulgarian rose and ylang-ylang. A little boozy and smokey.
Tonka Impériale is a little less sweet and a little lighter on the vanilla.
How does it compare to Kilian Back to Black?
B2B notes: bergamot, nutmeg, saffron, cardamom, coriander, raspberry, blue chamomile, honey, olibanum, cedar, oak, tobacco accord, patchouli, vanilla, almond and labdanum.
If you love B2B, you will love Tonka Impériale, which is heady on the tobacco, but less heavy than B2B. You could designate one for day and one for night — then switch and wear them just the opposite. They are enough different that I would want both.
How does it compare to Parfum de Nicolai Vanille Tonka?
Vanille Tonka is a floral spicy amber — even though amber is not listed in the notes. It is more spicy than Tonka Impériale and not quite as sweet, but just as luscious.
Vanille Tonka Top notes : Aromatic and citrus : basil, lemon and mandarin oils
Heart : Floral : carnation, orange blossom absolute, pepper oil, cinnamon oil
Bottom notes : Frankincense : frankincense and vanilla absolutes, tonka bean.
Have you tried Tonka Impériale?
Do you love it as much as I do?
How do I buy it? $235 for 2.5 oz.

January 28th, 2010 — Age, Aromaleigh, Avon, Chanel, Clarins, Cle de Peau, Dior, Estee Lauder, Guerlain, La Prairie, Lancome, Lumene, Mary Kay, Serum, Shiseido, Signature Club A, Un femme d'un certain age
Here are some thoughts on various types of serums and the links to posts where I have written more specifically. Some of the serums are pricing their way out of my price point. There are actually some that are over $1000 being marketed in Japan. I suspect some are worth it; others are not.
Whenever possible, let a beauty advisor put some on your skin. See if it is possible to get a small amount to try at home before you commit to a big purchase.
This is only a partial list, as I have thought of them. I will continue to update, as I think of it.
Body Serum
Arbonne has a wonderful body serum and body lotion. You can find my review at the above link.
Facial Serums
There are also serums targeted for eyes.
Anti-Wrinkle
La Prairie CELLULAR Retexturizing Booster
This just might be a miracle product. Whenever I apply it, I see immediate results. I generally use it for several days at a time, then I give it a rest and use it again when I see the need. It is expensive, but it really works. I think it works better than Renova. Price: $185.00 | 30 ml / 1.0 oz. (Unfortunately, it’s possible this is no longer available. I have not tried any of the comparible LP serums to see if a newer one is as good.)
Serums with Vitamin C
Many companies have C-serums because they work. I have used C products for years. Mary Kay is one of the companies that has just added a C formula. If you can’t beat them, join them. The important thing is to find a C serum that works for you, then use it.
Here’s a partial list of companies that have C-serums: Awake, MK, Aromaleigh (generic), Lancome, Estee Lauder, Prescriptives, Avon, Lumene. Choose the link above to see my thoughts on each.
Arbonne has a number of excellent serums, including lifting, RE9 (with C), and Revelage (whitening) I won’t be without the lifting or the whitening.
Avon has been a leader in skin care, very innovative. They were the first line to come out with an alpha-hydroxy — and it made a big difference in my skin. Their anew products are excellent. I do not care for either of their pump serums that they had a couple of years ago, because they smelled so bad. I recommend smelling them before buying to see if they still smell. I didn’t notice a huge difference like I did with their alpha-hydroxy products. Some of their products are targeted by age.
Beauticontrol
Beauticontrol makes several serums that I like. Some are targeted for 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s skin. I’ve liked Regeneration Gold for years. It’s a two step process that mixes when you pump it. It used to be that one was red, the other white. Now one is green, the other white. I do not know if it is the same product. Regeneration Platinum Plus is supposed to be the next step up, but it rolls on my skin, so I use it only on my neck and chest and bought more of the Regeneration Gold. They make C products, but I’ve not tried them as I have others that I am using at the moment.
Chanel Serums
Chanel makes a number of serums, and they are all excellent. It depends on your price point and your skin concerns. Sublimage products kept me moist even in the dryness of Las Vegas, using no other moisturizers layered in. The Radiance line has an excellent hydrating serum. As an aside, I did not care for Sublimage eye cream.
Clarins
I have used Super Restorative Serum. I likely might buy it again. I like what it says it does; I’m not sure I saw it doing it. I tended to use it more for hydrating than anything else. When I opened the container, when it seemed empty, there were still several days worth of product left. I put it in a small jar and used it to the last drop.
On the whole I like Clarins products, so I suspect their other serums would be good too. Their beauty advisers are generally knowledgeable and happy to help you. They are good about giving small samples to try.
Cle de Peau serums
Cle de Peau is the high end Shiseido line. CdP makes a number of serums, and they all feel good. I’m not sure how to choose one over the other. I have one. I’m not convinced it does anything particularly, but that might be because I tend to use others that I have.
Dior Serums
Dior makes some excellent serums. Capture Totale and HydrAction are two that I have tried. Capture Totale came highly recommended by a woman in NYC who swears by it.
Guerlain serums
Orchidee Imperiale is their highest, newest line. It is excellent. Super Aqua-Serum came highly recommended on the strength of one older woman who works for Guerlain whose skin is exceptionally beautiful. It’s a toss up which is better. Take your pick. They also have Success Future and Substantific serums. I get my Guerlain from Claire at the Palazzo in Las Vegas. Call 702) 732-7008 or email GuerlainPalazzo.STORE@lvmhuspc.com
Hydrating serums
La Prairie CELLULAR HYDRATING SERUM is an excellent hydrator, one of the very best. It is lightweight. It works by binding moisture to the skin and restoring the skin’s natural moisture barrier. A little goes a long ways and it stays fresh in the bottle. I use it generally on very cold days or whenever my face feels like it needs more moisture from the inside out. Price: $185.00
La Prairie Serums
Like Chanel, these are excellent, and it depends on your price point. I have not tried the latest lines.
Shiseido serums
Shiseido has a number of serums that are all excellent. Again, it depends on your price point and what you are hoping to accomplish.
Signature Club A
Super Strength High Potent-C Anti-Wrinkle Capsules $29.50
I like this a lot. It’s in my rotation of C products.
Retinol Wrinkle Penetrating Capsules 12 Hour Release $32.50
This is in my rotation. I like it a lot.
Viviane Woodard
I’ve used these products since I was 18. They have a number of serums, including specialized ones to use at night. Their day time serums are very good and moderately priced. The evening ones really give your skin a boost. They are used only periodically. Unlike ones by La Prairie that are also used only occasionally, these will not break the bank. Likely they perform different functions, but they help the skin.
Whitening serums
Many companies offer whitening serums. They started first in Asian countries. It’s not surprising that Shiseido has one. If you want to break up an age spot the fastest possible way, then your best bet is laser. Be sure to use SPF every day along with these.
Arbonne Revelage is an excellent whitener, which works by breaking up dark spots from below and keeping them from forming from the top.
Mary Kay TimeWise® Even Complexion Essence
I consider this more of a preventative, than a curative. I want to see faster results. I have no patience.
What serums do you know, use and love?
As I think of more, I will update.

Updated to include my review of Hourglass primer (and comparing it to Chanel’s Illuminating Base.) And also as a reminder about the value of using a primer.
To prime or not to prime, that is the question.
If you’ve not used a primer, try one and see what you think. Get a makeover and ask that they use one.
If you truly don’t like a primer, return it, if you bought it at a physical store. There are enough primers out there now, that you can find one that you love.
If you are using a primer, I’m guessing you will never go back to without.
Why prime?
What is the purpose of primer?
Primer perfects your look. It makes the surface of your skin silky with less visible imperfections, so you use less foundation. Your products glide over the top, meaning you need less foundation to cover.
What is primer made of?
Usually there is some silicone or one of the ‘cones’ in it to create a smooth surface on the skin.
Some folks even use Monistat gel for an inexpensive alternative.
How does it work?
Most primers are the last step before applying your foundation.
Primer slips over the skin, creating a light barrier, usually with silicone. Foundation glides on easier, goes on smoother, and covers better with less product.
Under a certain age, some primers will stop oil from coming through and messing with your look.
Once a certain age, a primer may act like spackle, one even has that name, gently filling in lines and pores to give a smooth surface for foundation and optically take time off your age.
Is it strictly cosmetic or is it also corrective?
All perform a cosmetic service; some are also corrective.
Color correction
Some primers color correct or add a sheer layer of color. Others are clear. Both Smashbox and Revlon Vital Radiance have multiple colors to correct.
Guerlain Meteorites Perles
Light-Diffusing Perfecting Primer; Base Perfection. Great little powder balls that color correct and do other neat things.
Contact Claire at Guerlain at the Palazzo in Las Vegas for all your Guerlain needs. (702) 732-7008. If you’re in town, stop in to visit!
Vital Radiance Smoothing Face Primer, SPF 25, Petal 002, Cool, 1 fl oz
which has been discontinued, can still be found on occasion. It came in two colors, cool and warm. I use cool.
Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer
is another good one. I use the purple. Purple will also bring a foundation into a cooler tone. One minimizes red tones; one minimizes yellow or sallow tones; one minimizes dark circles, veins, and dark spots. (The best thing for dark spots is using a lightening product or having them removed either by laser or by freezing.)
Some have added ingredients that benefit your skin.
Aromaleigh Easy applicator pump bottle. Very nice product.
The best “canvas” for any type of makeup is a perfect, smooth canvas. This is what we are all seeking, and for many, mineral makeup brings us one step closer.
Lock in hydration while smoothing and retexturizing your skin’s appearance and maximizing your makeup…
With natural oils of Safflower, Grape and Camellia, Vitamins E and A and advanced polymers… our primer combines nature with science to get your skin where you need it to go.
Less is more, just like with mineral makeup. Your primer can be blended with your moisturizer or sunscreen, or used on it’s own. It can even be combined with a small amount of powder to create an easy to apply mineral makeup/primer combination that smooths to a velvety finish. Aromaleigh
Arbonne Virtual Illusion makeup primer
Supposedly acts like a natural botox to improve the surface of your skin.
Create a flawless canvas for makeup application with this advanced primer. A blend of vitamins, skin-perfecting pigments, advanced cushioning and anti-aging ingredients work in harmony to help tone, smooth and minimize the visual appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. The result is a velvety, matte, radiant finish.
GABA, hyaluronic acid, polypeptides, gamma orizinol, light deflecting pigments, B-glycherritinic acid; horsetail extract, green tea leaf and grape seed extracts
Guerlain
L’Or – has real flecks of gold in it and creates a lovely look.
Again, contact Claire, see above.
La Prairie
I have not tried this white one.
La Prairie for eyes
Shiseido Benefiance Facial Lifting Complex also works to firm.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF15 with Dermaxyl Complex (Unboxed)
Here are some good ones:
Avon Magix evidently stops oil too; has a fairly heavy consistency; is generally well liked by everyone. Very reasonably priced at $10.
Smashbox – comes in clear (I like the purple better), purple (to correct skin tone, but it works to cool up colors of foundation that are a bit yellow),green (ditto, I haven’t tried this one) and an apricot one that has ingredients to benefit skin (I like the idea of this.) To me they all feel the same, but the clear one seems to do less. Placebo effect, likely!
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer oil free spf 15 $52
I loved this product. It has a slight radiance to it which makes my skin look perfect. This is something I likely will be buying. 132 people reviewed it at Sephora, giving it an average of more than 4.5 stars.
Today I compared it to Chanel’s SHEER ILLUMINATING BASE. Both illuminate; Hourglass seems more slippery. I preferred the look of Hourglass once I had on my foundation and sparkly powder mix. I generally use Chanel’s only up the center of my face as a highlighter.
It is water-resistant and 100% fragrance free, oil free, and paraben free. It does not have an odd smell because of ingredients. I smell nothing.
It neutralizes the skin, creating a smooth, uniform slate for makeup application. Don’t forget the slight radiance which evenly distributes light to soften and camouflage skin imperfections and fine lines. It also protects from oil breakthrough, so your makeup stays looking fresh longer.
It has no
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Phthalates
The SPF is formulated with naturally-derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide rather than chemical sun-blocking agents.
These work, but I don’t like them as well
Laura Geller Spackle – Sephora sampled this.
It started out white and got taupe colored when exposed to air. The sample was in a pot. The full size is in a pump which would eliminate exposure to air.
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Oil Free
Sephora sampled this also. It was one of the first on the market.
Revlon It’s OK, but I didn’t like it as well. Comes in two formulas.
Revlon Age Defying Instant Firming Face Primer for Normal/Combination Skin (Pack of 2)
Sheer Cover Light weight. Still, it is nice.
Smashbox Highlight and Prime together
You can read my review here. I don’t like the dual delivery system. It doesn’t feed evenly. You have to cover one side to make sure the other feeds. I love the color though. Would be better to have just had the highlight to use as you wish, and add to your primer or not, as you wish. Or have two separate tubes in the set vs. 2 in 1 tube.
How about perfecting your look even more?
There are products you can apply over your makeup that filter out and soften lines, similar to when Doris Day was filmed through a special lens.
Clarins makes a great one!
Use this around your mouth or eyes, wherever you need extra help. Try it out at one of the counters.
La Prairie
Pink colored, quite a heavy consistency. Pricey. No better than some and less than others. Evidently, it comes in gold too. I think it is quite thick.
The eye product tends to roll some, but the look is pretty.
Signature A Wrinkle Filiment
is heavier, similar to La Prairie’s, but apricot colored.
MAC Prep and Prime
Prep and prime is a face primer. I like prep and prime better than Smashbox Photo finish because it doesn’t have that slick feel to it. It’s not all silicone. I recommend it. Miranda
MAC Black eye primer
I also bought MAC’s black eye primer. It makes a huge difference in how the eyeshadow looks. Want a paler, more natural look, use a skin toned primer. Want uber kapow and drama for evening, use black primer! Miranda
Do you use a primer?
Which one(s) do you use or have you tried?
Let me know if I left out any that you particularly love.
Nearly every line has a primer in their arsenal now. I’d like to hear about any good ones!
To buy Arbonne from Bookgirl, if you don’t have a representative, just contact me, and I’ll put you in touch.

December 30th, 2009 — Guerlain, Lemon, Musk, Perfume review, Perfumes, Rose, Sweet Licorice, Tea, Vanilla
What a pretty bottle:

11:00 Book Girl likes this one. Her first words:
Oh, I like this one! This smells like a night time rendevous! Going to a club… It’s definitely for someone in their 20’s. Young and spunky. I like it!
She says it’s more elegant than skanky, and she didn’t even know the name yet.
Avon had Little Black Dress first, but it wasn’t this version, and it wasn’t with a French name. La Petite Robe Noire, Little Black Dress, AKA Little-Black-Dress-gone-clubbing, is considered a fruity gourmand, right up the alley of the 20-somethings. And it decidedly not noir noir, it is more fuchsia noir.
Notes include Sicilian lemon, licorice, almond, rose, smoky tea, musk and vanilla.
Yesterday I picked up more of the floral. Today I’m picking up more of a somewhat subdued Angel. It is Angel’s youngest sister. Sweet and sassy. LVMH uses the word audacious.
Almost cherry or very cherry, it must be the almond thing going on, but it does not smell like the original Jergen’s. And then there might even be a touch of Lolita Lempicka — it’s got to be the licorice.
I want that bottle. Or, at least I want to see that bottle.
Octavian has a nice write up at his blog, a play on French words, and a great picture of the window on Rue de la Paix.
I keep hearing this lyric in my head:
Someone left the cake out in the rain.
12:40 Today, it is not moving past this first stage very quickly, but then I gave myself a double hit. The top notes are predominant, but make no mistake, it will move. I will update as the day goes on.
3:00 pretty well gone, just smelled lighter
5:00 gone; but still apparent on Book Girl
5:47 I replenished with a drop on each wrist — smells less like Angel when used in small doses
7:06 much more of a fruity floral when worn this way
Update December 2009 I got a great compliment while wearing my sample. I still have not bought this in full size, but considering the compliment, I ought to!

December 10th, 2009 — Chanel, Chocolate, Comparing, Guerlain, Patchouli, Perfume layering, Plum
I’m laughing at myself today. Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do!
I have so many fragrances that sometimes it is hard to choose, and if it’s been a while since I’ve worn something, I need a scent nudge to remember how it smells on me or how it makes me feel or how it enhances my mood. But I don’t want to pick the wrong scent for the day, because if it doesn’t match what I hoped for, I’d be better off going scentless.
Yesterday I wore Guerlain 68 for a while, but it wasn’t doing it for me. It didn’t have enough going for it or for me. I’m looking for a deeper fragrance to match the weather, I guess.
I’ve been thinking of Coromandel for a couple of days, but first I was drawn today to Moscow. Then I thought, why not wear both at the same time, not one later, you might like it!
So I have Moscow on my left arm and Coromandel on my right. I smell good!
And to top it off, I’m burning a scent tart Autumn Fruit by Yankee Candle. That’s yummy too. Interesting that they all go together.
The stars have aligned!
Moscow Notes: Musk, fruit, wood…vanilla, bergamot, red currants, absinthe, lemon, plum
Coromandel Notes~ “named for the Chinese lacquered screens Gabrielle Chanel collected, is a spirited oriental with amber and dry notes”. Orange peel, frankincense, patchouli, chocolate, vanilla.
Coromandel is much more in your face. It overpowers Moscow on the first spritz, but as it settles down, the two are equals.
Moscow has a little more fruit (plummy) but this is not a teeny-bop fruit, oh no! This is grown up.
And Coromandel has that patchouli-chocolate thang going for it. I’m a sucker for both, unless the chocolate is fake smelling or the patchouli is too dry. This is just perfect.
Often if I layer a fragrance, I just spritz one on top of the other, but this I believe I would do exactly the same again. Each is more interesting with the other, but I would not want them blended. I like the distinctness of them both, and I get to enjoy two fragrances, not one.
If you like plum
Another plum is Rochas Femme, but I don’t wear it as well.
Notes for Femme
Top Notes: Peach, plum, bergamot, lemon, rosewood
Heart Notes: Ylang-ylang, jasmine, May rose, clove, orris
Base Notes: Musk, amber, oakmoss, vanilla, patchouli, benzoin, leather
You might also like
Ghost (deep night) (pretty bottle too, it looks like the moon.)
top: hibiscus, rose petals and ambrette grains.
mid: Jasmine, spicy sandalwood and warm frankincense tones
base: vanilla, musk, ambergris and apricots
Notes: Rose, apricot, peach, vanilla, musk
So, asking a friend which she prefers, she likes them both, but Moscow might have the edge. But I love what Coromandel is bringing to it, having the edginess of the patchouli-chocolate along with it. I actually like them both together better than I’ve liked either one of them alone.
Do you wear either of these?
Do you have a favorite chocolate? patchouli? plum or fruit?
And I’m listening to Christmas music on my iPod — jazz at the moment. I hope you are having a great day!

November 13th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Beauté, Cosmetics, Guerlain, Lancome, Lip Gloss, NYX, Techniques, Un femme d'un certain age
I wanted to repost this technique for those who are not familiar with it or who have joined my blog more recently. The technique for voluminous lips really does work, no matter your age. I have an easy way to find this from my front page, but sometimes it is easier just to see it as a post. It is well worth the few seconds it takes to update your lips.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
Beauté Cosmetics has a short line right now — lip gloss, lip and cheek stain, and brushes — and some lovely gift sets.
At the site, there are five different videos from the creative director Beau Nelson, including one on Voluminous Lips.
Dontcha just love the concept of voluminous lips!
How they work
He tells us in the video that Beauté glosses have three different volumizers:
…dehydrating Marine Filling Spheres which act like tiny sponges that go inside the lip, then expand with the body’s own natural water — that gives you instant plumping; maxi-lip is a tripeptide that stimulates collagen cell renewal — after 29 days you get semi-permanent volume that is a long term benefit; then we have orchid extract that regulates the natural moisturizing factor of the lips.
They are excellent glosses!
I bought several of them and I was given one for review, and depending on what color lippie I am using, I vary the Beauté gloss color that I rim with.
These will plump and give the illusion of plumping without damaging
If you remember from reading my blog, I damaged my lips by daily using a plumping lipstick that stings. I asked KarlaSugar before I purchased if these sting, and she said they did not. I agree! You can see her reviews and swatches at her wonderful blog.
I know that Orchid Extract(s) are a big part of Guerlain’s treatment line, so they do work.
Lip Technique
In the video, Beau shows a lip technique for giving instant volume and glam to your lips. I wanted to try it today, but initially forgot, so then I had to rethink it, how to do it with lip glosses I had on hand — and the one I had already applied.
What I liked about his technique
It is very simple, and it is subtle, suitable for every day wearing. But it really makes a difference.
What is it?
He uses two of his colors: Allure and Paramour in this technique.
Both of them are glittery, with some light reflecting.
I think you could use any two of his glosses — or others you have on hand — that work with your skin tone.
First
He begins by taking the lighter of two Beauté glosses and outlines the lips on the outside edge of the lip line.
Remember that by extending the lip line a tad, you are extending the optical illusion of your lip line. By using a gloss, not a pencil, it is subtle — and you won’t be left with a hard line if you eat off the center of the color. I think it is also a more modern look, and less made-up looking. Additionally, it does a better job of camouflaging tiny lines around your lips than a colored lip pencil does. You can still use a clear lip pencil farther out, if you wish.
You want to look like you only better. You don’t want to look like the first thing someone notices is your makeup technique.
Next
He fills in the lip line up to the edge of the first color (not over it) with the deeper gloss.
My lips today
I had already applied the gloss I wanted to swatch, before I remembered I was going to try this technique. Oops. So I applied his technique in reverse.
I had initially planned to use Too Faced — which I did later today. See pix here.
NYX Pink Sparkle Diamond Sparkle Gloss
I had this on my lips already — and couldn’t decide what direction to go for my FOTD. That was a challenge!
To Rim: I wanted something that would show.
Lancome Starlight, clear white glittery gloss
Rimmed — after the fact! You can see that reversing the application works too.
I used a lip brush to get the tiniest line.
You can see it is very subtle, yet noticeable. I love it!

Another view:

And another view:

Using a glitter pencil to rim
I have tried this in the past, using a Tina and Tony pink sparkle pencil to highlight the entire upper lip or just the middle, but it wasn’t as effective, was harder to use, and I only did it on occasion.
This technique with gloss is much better and easier.
Using the look with darker lippies
I used a very light glitter gloss here to rim because my skin is so pale and because I was using a light lipstick. If I were using a red, I’d likely use a red sparkle for the rim. Or if magenta, then magenta gloss to rim, etc. I’d have to experiment to see if I preferred a matching gloss to a lighter one that more nearly matches my skin tone. Aromaleigh Rocks! Glam Glitters would work well for the rim, if I didn’t have a gloss that would work.
Update: I do use a color close to the color of the main color of my lip color for dark or bright colors. I use a lighter shade if my lip color is more soft or neutral. And in general, I do the outer rimming after I apply the lip color. It seems easier to me. So I do the reverse of how Beau shows.
Tailoring it for darker skins
If you have darker skin, rim your lips with a gloss color lighter or brighter or more glittery than the gloss or lip color you are using, and semi-close to your own skin tone, that way it will be subtle but still daring. Or blend it in a little. For instance, if you are using a clear or sparkly red gloss for your lip, use a deeper sparkly red or deep pink for the rim. Don’t use as light a color as I did unless, of course, you are using a very light lip color.
Or, alternatively, try it with a glitter (either gold or silver glitters depending on your skin tone or the lip color you are using) pencil in grey or black or brown, just on the edge. Or use one of Aromaleigh’s Rocks! glam glitters. Either a matching color or one of the interesting blacks. They would work really well and easily.
My view
Wow, I love this technique! I will likely use it every day.
What do you think? Will you try it?
It is quick and simple — and effective. See my review of these NYX glosses here. Doing a quick comparison of the lips there, this LOTD technique really makes a difference!
If you want to read a detailed interview with Beau about himself and his Beauté line, go here.
The formula is wonderful! Considering that one person swatched her entire line at karlasugar, it’s gotta be good. You won’t be sorry if you try one or three!

September 9th, 2009 — Brows, Chanel, Eye liner, FOTD, Foundation, Guerlain, La Prairie, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, MAC, MUFE Make Up Forever, Primer, Rouge or blush, Tova
I thought it would be fun to use the Chanel Lumiere Tendresse palette again.
Eyes:
Base: MAC Luna, then BE Queen Phyllis
Lids: Mix of the righthand silvery gray with the lefthand deep brown — it pulled quite a bit of lavender from the gray — I liked this better than the brown used with the light beige
Tightlined: MAC graphblack, with Earthline at the bottom too, smudged with the MAC brush
Mascara: Guerlain Le2
Brows: La Prairie pencil

Primer: MUFE
Foundation: Tova cream
Blush from the palette (sort of a soft apricot)
My sparkly mix powder.
Lips: Used 3 of the 4 colors: Brightest color on lips, then the right hand sparkly rose gloss, rimmed and up the center with the left side lightest sparkly beige gloss

Do you have this palette? I think it will be a nice, soft neutral for spring or fall.

September 4th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Brows, Clinique, Creating a new lippie, Equal opportunity customer, Eye Shadow, FOTD, Foundation, Guerlain, La Prairie, Lip Balm, Lip pencil, Lipstick, MAC, Mascara, Maybelline, NYX, Pencils, Powder, Primer, Revlon, Techniques, Truth in advertising
One thing you can say about me, among many others, is that I’m an equal opportunity buyer. When it comes to cosmetics, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive for it to be the right color. I first look for color, then I look for the finish it gives. Or, I look first for the finish, then to see if there is a color that is right for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of expensive lines’ colors, but that is not all I have. I never throw anything away because it is extremely rare for anything to get old. I pass it on or continue to use it.
One place I don’t hedge is skin care, but even there the most expensive is not necessarily the one that works the best. If it works, I have likely tried it or am still using it. But realistically, there are so many skin care items and so little time. Laughing here. And I’d venture to say that if I lived elsewhere there’d be a whole realm of other products available to me that are not available in the US. So we do the best we can.
NYX, Aromaleigh, Meow are all lines that are reasonably priced, especially if you start with samples, as you can with the latter two. In the meantime, I bought a couple of NYX things that I’ve never used yet, and I wanted to give them a go.
The NYX colors I used today are individual square shadows with a clear lid.
Eyes:
Base: Nude frost on lids, not under brows, then BE Queen Phyllis
Lids: NYX October Sky (pale blue, almost matte)
Drylined top and bottom: Ocean (blue-green, more green) then over the whole lid a bit
Mascara: Guerlain Le2
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Inner corners: MAC Fascinating pencil (white)
Concealer: the one in the Revlon foundation palette

Primer: Smashbox
Foundation: Revlon age defying cream
Rouge under my sparkly mix powder: Revlon
Blush over: Maybelline Dream Mousse 25
Lips: Avon, MAC and Clinique, see LOTD for details

What do you think?
Isn’t this is pretty color combination! I love it. As you can see, I used a variety of brands and many, but not all, are inexpensive.
How about you?
Do you lean to cosmetics across the board or do you use all price ranges?
My fragrance:
Guerlain Boisé Torrid on my wrists, then later Narciso Rodriquez Women on one arm to compare it; last on the other arm Andy Tauer Reverie au Jardin — I really smell good. I do. I got a compliment: I smell your perfume, you smell good. What are you wearing?

September 4th, 2009 — Cedar, Citrus, Guerlain, Jasmine, Marshmallow, Musk, Orange Blossom, Patchouli, Perfume review, Pink pepper, Shared
Boisé Torride is a powerhouse of a fragrance. In some ways it reminds me of Paloma or of Estee Lauder’s Knowing. It starts off with a bang and hours later ends up with a sigh or a whisper.
You have to like patchouli and cedar to love this fragrance. That is where it starts on its journey.
I do.
And this combo takes it a little bit from the sweet patchouli into a more incensy version. The overall effect is not like some of Neil Morris’ fragrances, which I also love, but unique to the vision that Guerlain was reaching for.
It also is not like the sweetness of Gucci by Gucci with the added fruits.
It is called an androgynous fragrance, designed for a woman but to me surely suitable for a man, part of Les Elixirs Charnels series, which also includes Chypre Fatale, Gourmand Coquin, and Oriental Brûlant.
It is translated
smoldering wood, a new opus for femininity
though I think torrid or scorching would be easy translations also. Perhaps it begins as scorching and ends up smoldering. Some like it hot!
Guerlain loves women and has always celebrated their sensuality. A new expression of sensuality now completes this collection of Elixirs Charnels.
To me, there are three distinct stops on this voyage. The first is the initial flare. I used a couple of drops on my wrist and arm, passed to the other wrist and arm. Frankly, I can’t imagine this one sprayed 10 times in the beginning, as at least two people I know do with some of their fragrances. You might knock someone out with the sillage.
I could see extending the 10 squirts throughout the day to refresh it back to the flare stage.
OTOH, an extremely heavy hit of this fragrance, depending on your chemistry, might soften just as nicely to a richer sigh of an ending. You’ll have to try it both ways and get back to me. You would certainly have some serious sillage, at least for that moment. And some would have to be on your legs. After all, fragrance rises.
A couple of hours later, the fragrance hits a midpoint. Patchouli is still evident, it is wafting through the trees. I catch it when I turn or move my hands quickly. It surprises me. It is softer and gentler, but still has presence.
The last stage is about 7-8 hours in, when the fragrance has settled into a sigh.
I like the presence of all three. I like that the fragrance moves and isn’t linear, though in some sense it is linear, because patchouli and cedar, less so, are evident throughout.
Now something completely silly to me and totally unnecessary is the excessive verbiage of the ad copy’s stream of consciousness of the imagined wearer. I could do without that. I’d rather have my own imagination, thank you very much, laughing here. I mean, get real! It sounds like drivel. (And this is true for the other elixirs as well.)
…I still can’t decide…Too obvious. I have to seduce him in a different way. Take him down paths still unknown to him…Why didn’t I see it sooner?…masculine outfit…nothing under the jacket… contrast…ambiguity do the talking. Androgynous? Perhaps. Terribly sexy? But of course…[2 more paragraphs similar except for telling the notes] He will…become intoxicated by my skin and my essence, strangely androgynous yet irresistibly attractive.
Are they trying to reach a young, unseasoned woman, who presumably might not be able to make up her mind? Or the mature, knows-her-mind-and-how-to-get-it woman who would be more apt to choose this fragrance. After all, it is a fragrance for grownups. It certainly is not a fruity, sweet concoction.
How many of us think this way? I sincerely hope not many.
Perhaps it reads and sounds better in French. Everything sounds better in French!
If I were a man, Boisé Torride would lose me right there, without even giving it a try. And this would be a mistake, because this would be a delectable fragrance on a man, maybe even more so than on me. Or, it could be one of those shared fragrances between two lovers, where it develops differently on each one, to be individual, yet complementary, the way life should be.
Top Notes: bergamot and tangerine with pink pepper
Heart: jasmine and orange blossom with white musk, underneath is a mallow note, not sweet like Mariah’s M
Base: cedar and patchoui
Have you tried it?
If you like
If you like any of the patchouli fragrances I’ve mentioned, you would likely like this one.
To me, there is a little bit of second-cousin-twice-removed to the fragrance Narciso Rodriquez for women.
It has some similarities, but ends up in a different place. Maybe it’s the woods and orange blossom.
It’s a good one for your repertoire. Remember you have to be a grown up. And that isn’t a bad thing.

August 29th, 2009 — Cosmetics, Cover Girl, Guerlain, LOTD, Lipstick, Plumping, Review, Techniques
I’ve added two other pictures: color 912 and lips with a mix of the two colors 912 and 928.
Incredifull is Cover Girl’s foray into the lip plumping game. And this is my experience with Incredifull (love that clever name!) lipstick.
928
I love this color! The picture doesn’t do it justice. It’s a color that makes you feel good.

My problem
I probably wore this color every day for a year. Not all day. I used other lipstick brands during the day too.
But eventually I realized that my lips were sore. And for close to a year nothing really cleared them up, and every lipstick and balm hurt, until I remembered my Guerlain Lip Lift. It is a magic product that I’ve talked about before. Liplift fixed the problem with one application. I now have one in my purse and in the bathroom. Almost instantly, I could wear any brand of lipstick again without any problem, but I hadn’t tried the CG one again until the day I took this picture.
Does it really plump the lips?
I’m not sure any lip plumpers really plump the lips — and not for long, but it has a pleasant-enough sting. Is that an oxymoron?
Do I recommend it?
I really like this color lipstick
If you are looking for a lip plumper: If you are not sensitive, and if you don’t wear it all the time until you see how you do, and if you are careful to be aware of your own lips, you should try this.
It has good staying power, doesn’t migrate. And good color selections, though this is the only one I bought until I recently bought color 912, thinking I’m ready to start wearing it again, but cautiously.
912
This is a very pretty, soft apricot pink. I figured I could wear it for less dramatic lipstick, and also as one that would mix nicely with others.

Lips: CG 912+928 + Stila Silver Mix
First: Guerlain liplift primer and conditioner and all round magic product
912 and 928 are plumping colors
1/2 and 1/2 each color, one on each lip, smooshed; then Stila-Silver Mix gloss when some of the lippie was gone to refresh it… I made sure I used Liplift before these colors. I never felt the product sting my lips.

What do you think?
Have you tried this lipstick? Do you like it?
