    Well, this was a totally fun movie!

    Matthew McConaughey has superb comic timing, as well as believability when he delivers a changed monologue. And I have to say that he looks a lot like a young Paul Newman here.

    Michael Douglas must have had a blast riffing on his own life to a degree, making fun of everything most folks might have believed about him. He looks mighty good in this movie. Either he's had work done; the work has settled; or he might not be quite as thin as he was, which is better on him than the other way. Anyway, he's a hoot delivering lines spoofing himself (and Hugh Hefner) with a straight face.

    I'd like to see the outtakes. Both Matthew and Michael have a twinkle in their eye. That in itself is fun to watch.

    Jennifer Garner is good always. She has a very expressive face.

    I enjoyed seeing Breckin Meyer. I expected him to play a part similar to the one he played in Kate and Leopold, but he played this differently.

    Anne Archer looks good in this movie. It was like seeing her in Clear and Present Danger. She brings a lot to the part, just with her facial expressions. She plays a mature woman who doesn't cross a line into sleaze.

    We walked out of the movie saying that it was one we wanted to own.

    We love that program, though I wish they would just keep going instead of having weeks off, then we have to remember it again.

    If you like the program too, you might enjoy this written interview with Bruce Campbell who plays Sam on the show.

    Very interesting.

    I like the character of Sam too. He's fun to watch. He looks like he's having fun too.

    Written in 2007:
    One of my girls got in the car crying yesterday. Mean girls. Mean girls. Don't know if she contributed some or not, but she is sweetly sensitive which sometimes makes you a target.

    She went off to school this morning hoping there wouldn't be a repeat.

    I told her about college girl's forays into mean girl territory when she was in high school and junior high. I told her some of what I had faced. I told her about books that have been written about this phenomena.

    And college girl came home last night for spring break so she talked to her too.

    And I asked her if there was anything she wanted me to do. Did she want me to talk to the teacher, etc?

    Meantime we had one of her friends over for play and dinner, which helped a lot. I encouraged her not to say too much as it sometimes comes back to haunt you. But this other friend said that mean girl had been really nice until she got with a couple of other girls.

    Well, you know how you don't think of things to say in the moment, but maybe years later.

    I got to laughing with college girl and her, and I said, laughing, you should have asked her if she had a kleenex.

    Why? said younger girl.

    I said, because then you could say because she was being a snot!

    My bad.

    So far as I know, this is original to me. When telling a friend and her 20ish daughter, her daughter thought it was funny and clever.

    I also told my girl not to really say this, but if she thought it in her mind, it might help her laugh about it some.

    She mentioned that to me in the car this morning.

    Two movies my girls love are Mean Girls and 13 Going On 30 . We talked about them too.

    They know the concept of mean girls, but it's different bearing the brunt of it.

    Have you had successes with overcoming mean girl syndrome?

    Written in 2012:
    The ultimate mean girls-grown-up show on TV now is GCB, based on the book Good Christian Bitches, which we are thoroughly enjoying. It is both funny and touching -- and over the top and a spoof in many ways. Amanda was the ultimate mean girl in high school, but she has now changed and is back in Dallas, but the three women who still are in Dallas don't realize it. Each actor and actress are skilled comedic players, with perfect timing.

    Carleen is played by Kristin Chenowith. Amanda's mother, Gigi, is played by Annie Potts. (This is especially funny to me, because that is what my grandkids call me -- name chosen by my son and daughter-in-law.) I love Cricket and Blake. What I've found is that all the characters have love for each other -- you have to wait until the last 5 minutes of every show, because there is usually a surprise. And there's always some singing, usually in the church choir.

    Bookgirl and I went to this movie last night. It's amazing how bad a critic can make a movie sound. It got zero stars in our local paper by a syndicated critic.

    There were about 10 people at the late showing, including us. All women. We all had fun.

    Yes, yada yada, it's not Shakespeare. It's not sci fi or adventure. It's probably not a guy flick.

    It's just a light romance with a bunch of quirky tourists (we were glad we'd never traveled with quite such quirks) who bond throughout the trip in endearing ways. There's some humor, a bad guy, a quirky employer. It is all done light heartedly. Yes, there are cliches. But that makes it interesting, just to see how they play out. (The older lady who steals is one of them.)

    Nia Vardalos is as beautiful as ever. She has a wonderfully expressive face. I think it's too bad the movie got no stars, because it will probably be gone before anyone hears word of mouth that it is a very nice movie to while away some time in.

    I hadn't realized that Richard Dreyfuss is in it. He also has an expressive face. Nuances in the eyes.

    One caveat: Nia walks around the ruins in unbelievably high heels. We've been to Olympia, Delphi, and Athens, so it was lovely to see this scenery again, including the Pantheon at night (magical!) But there is no way I could have walked in any of them with high heels without turning an ankle. Delphi had quite steep slopes with a lot of gravel. I was afraid coming down I might just slip on the gravel. No way would I navigate in heels.

    The bad guy gets his comeuppance. Georgia (Nia) finds love. There's some comedy; some pathos. We get to see the views.

    I want to go to Greece again.

    What's so bad about going to the movies just to have a good time.

    Sizzling Sixteen is one (the 16th) of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books.

    I like Stephanie, I really do. I enjoyed Katherine Heigl bringing her to life in One for the Money.

    The characters
    Stephanie is plucky; daring, even courageous; loyal to her friends; with an interesting group of people/friends that she works with. She is a moderately successful bounty hunter, with an unorthodox way of getting her bounty. I love her Grandma Mazur, who visits funeral homes for the viewings and the cookies. I love Lula, the ex-'ho (self-described) who dresses over the top and loves to eat. I liked her 'diet' in this book, where she only eats one of anything (i.e. one pea -- but it turns out to be one of each kind of doughnut...) I love Ranger, the Latino wealthy man who wants her (and she him) who rescues her in every book. It is rare for them to get together, but when they do, the sparks fly. I like Morelli, the cop who took her virginity when they were in school -- her on-again, off-again boyfriend.

    My take
    That said, I don't think this is one of the best books -- it got a little tiresome. I give it 2* out of 5*.

    The Story
    Vinnie, of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds, has been kidnapped. Who really cares! He is a slimeball kind of a man who has gotten mixed up in some monetary issues (scams and betting). He owes $786,000, but it escalates to over a million.

    How Stephanie, Connie (the office manager) and Lula raise the money is part of the fun of the book, as well as over the top -- but it shouldn't surprise anyone who is a fan of this character.

    Throw in a Hobbit-Con that Moon Man is coordinating, as well as his hyped up brownies and a 'lucky' bottle that has been willed to Stephanie that may or may not be lucky, but comes in handy, and you have the typical Stephanie Plum recipe for success.

    Are you Team Ranger or Team Morelli?
    Of course, you have both Ranger and Morelli vying for her success -- and her body -- and maybe her hand. There is more sexual tension than any sexual activity. She and Morelli are dealing with a dust-up over toast, of all things.

    If you were Stephanie, would you choose Ranger or Morelli? Ha! they are both hot characters. Morelli is more conventional, in an unconventional sort of way. Ranger grabs my heart -- but he's got some mystery to him, so he might not be a good bet. But like Jacob and Edward, they both want to keep her safe. And both are very good lovers. And those are two good things in their favor.

    Have you read this book?
    Do you have a favorite of her books? Have you thought who they might cast for the parts?

    I could see Queen Latifah as Lula (that's all I could think of reading this) (but Sherri Shepherd did a perfect job!) -- Sherri made the character fun to watch. I think The Rock would have made a fantastic Ranger, but Daniel Sunjata was terrific in the part. I could see Jon Heder as Moon Man. Grandma Mazur would be a great part for an older actress, maybe Betty White (but she's too sweet) -- how about Cloris Leachman (she could be tough) -- she is a hoot! Debbie Reynolds owned the part in the first 5 minutes. The kind of elderly person I aspire to be, minus the funeral home viewings. Those of you who know me, could you see me as a Grandma Mazur someday?

    I thought I was going to hate this movie, but I went along just because.

    It turned out to be better than I had hoped.

    I like both the actresses in it. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway -- what's not to like!

    Toss in Candice Bergen in the sort of roles she is getting as a mature woman. She brings some authority to the role.

    Chris Pratt plays a character you wish were different. My companion picked up on his character's negatives right away.

    All's well that end's well. I'm glad there was a denouement. And neither Kate nor Anne was too over the top in this one, to the point where I had feared before I went to see it.

    What's to say, except I liked this movie. It is a great franchise. Tom Cruise has redeemed himself (again.)

    Simon Pegg is terrific as the sidekick with humor.

    Jeremy Renner as William Brandt is perfect as the analyst who turns out to be more.

    I enjoyed watching Paula Patton as Jane Carter, one of the team.

    Tom Wilkinson as the IMF Secretary is, as usual, terrific.

    Léa Seydoux is beautiful as the cold as nails assassin who works for diamonds.

    Suffice it to say that there is action, stunts you'd never want to try (much less film), more action, interesting characters, enough suspense to keep you happy, more action...a little James Bond-ish but not so heavy on the sex.

    Have you seen it?
    I rate it 4 out of 4 star. It's not terribly graphic, you know the good guys will win (and survive), the filming was well done, you can't complain about the theme song, instantly recognizable... There's enough humor to act as a foil to the action...

    We went to see this at the midnight show of opening night. There weren't a lot of folks there, which surprised me, but it might have been because people were sure about the casting.

    If you love the book, you will love the movie. I'd see it again in a minute, and I will definitely buy it when it comes out as a DVD.

    What's not to love about a movie that makes you happy, where you know the main character is going to be OK, where there is a lot of humor, and it is fun to watch!

    Casting:
    Let's talk casting. I wasn't at all convinced until I saw the movie. It was perfect.

    I liked the idea of Katherine Heigl, but I wasn't sure if I'd like her in dark hair. Not to worry. She looked great.

    Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur was not at all who I pictured. But she got me in the first minute of her first appearance on screen. Considering Grandma Mazur is a favorite character, that is saying something.

    Lulu -- well, I had thought Queen Latifah, but she is too high class for the part. But Sherri Shepherd was perfect in the part, and her getups were just like Janet Evanovich describes her.

    Vinnie (Patrick Fischler) was perfect.

    Now Morelli (Jason O'Mara) turned out to be a good choice. There is a lot of magnetism between him and Stephanie.

    And speaking of magnetism, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, turned out to be perfect. Many of us had thought of the Rock in this part, but Daniel couldn't be beat.

    Ana Reeder as Connie, does a good job.

    I didn't have anybody in mind for her parents, so they were OK. They don't have a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters.

    If you liked the book, do yourself a favor and get on down and see the movie. You know it is a terrific franchise, and I'd like to see the other books made as movies too. This one has to sell tickets for that to happen. I'd definitely go see them.

    Bookgirl and I went to The Proposal this morning. The theater was probably about 2/3 full -- a good crowd! And there were some men, not a lot, but a few.

    We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and laughed our way through it. It was sweet, poignant, a hoot (especially Gammy (Betty White) who steals every scene she's in -- in a good way), a little raunchy (not too bad) -- just all round fun.

    A summer escape. Yep, that's what it is. We get enough of the other just in the news.

    You can be pretty sure it has a happy ending. Believable, but happy. Who doesn't want to see life wrapped up happily in a couple of hours?

    And we saw two people who are fun to watch, not to mention all the others in the film too. Bookgirl particularly liked Mary Steenburgen as the mother. Craig T. Nelson is the father. Ryan Reynolds is easy on the eyes, for sure, as the male lead. I'd go see him again in a heartbeat. We always like Sandra Bullock. I liked the relationships within the family.

    Judging from the size of the crowd, I think a lot of us are looking for happy movies that aren't sugary.

    Or are a little sugary, but not like syrup.

    I heard from a friend that she saw it on Sunday with a friend, and they both liked it too.

    Well, sure, it's predictable. Maybe even a rehash, but hey, it's fun to watch. One quick nude scene, more suggested than actual. And more of Sandra B -- which is to be expected, even if not fair.

    So there you have it! If you are in the mood, go for it! Have you seen it? I give it a 3. And a 7 for scenery. I'd like to be back in Sitka this summer.

    College Girl and I went to see this movie last night. The theater was fairly full. There were a few guys, mostly girls. A few young teens, more were older.

    There was actually a smattering of applause at the end of the movie. Imagine that. And as CG said, none of the guys booed.

    It's basically a cute movie. We overheard many comments like this on the way out. Even the few moms who were there with younger girls expressed surprise at how well they liked it. (It's not a movie particularly for young children. You should check it out first.)

    It's a modern take on Snow White. The 7 nerds could have been seriously annoying, but they don't take it that far. For every nerd there is a silver lining, which is sometimes true to life too when nerds grow up.

    Yes, parts aren't true to sorority life, that they've taken to the point of parody, but it's not gross out comedy with the exception of one nerd with sinus problems. And it's predictable in some ways and could have been better in others, but overall it was empowering, to know you can stand up to bullying.

    Amanda Bynes has a lovely sense of comedic timing and an expressive face. She is fun to watch.

    Sara Paxton plays the sorority girl you love to hate -- the part she played well, as a high school student, in Sleepover.

    It sure beats slasher and gross out movies.
