Book Girl and I went to see this one the other day. I thought I was going to another movie — Letters to Juliet! But When in Rome is one we thought we’d like to see from the previews, and the other one will be coming out soon, so we will see that one then. I did feel silly, however, to wrap my head around seeing a different movie than I expected!
When in Rome is a cute fantasy movie. Beth (Kristen Bell) is a workaholic, a young curator at the Guggenheim, working for Celeste (Anjelica Huston who plays her with delight.) Unlucky in love, she heads to Rome for her sister’s (Alexis Dziena) (who plays her usual dipsy part) whirlwind wedding. While there, she meets Nick (Josh Duhamel) and when it looks like her hopes for this possible relationship are dashed, she takes coins from the fountain, instead of tossing a coin to wish for love.
You can imagine the fun when the men who tossed the coins begin to pursue her aggressively. One is Danny DaVito, who is the only one who can deliver the lines he is given. Another is Jon Header (Napoleon Dynamite) — he gets more handsome by the day — who plays his part hilariously. Dax Shepard plays a ripped model, hilariously, in love with himself, now in love with her. Then there is the painter…
It takes her a while to realize they have been hit by a love spell because of the coins she took. Half the fun is how she is going to get out of it.
The cast includes a lot of all-stars. In addition to those mentioned, Don Johnson plays her father. Peggy Lipton is Priscilla. Even Shaq turns up.
Our theater was fairly full. There was a woman behind us with an infectious laugh. She belongs in a soundtrack. It was as much fun listening to her enjoy the movie, as it was for us to enjoy it.
There is one twist I didn’t see until the very end. It adds some fun too.
Have you seen this movie?
I give it 2.5 or 3 stars. It’s not Shakespeare, but it sure is fun. If you want to have a lot of laughs, suspend reality, and just have a good time, this is a movie to more than while away some time with.

Book Girl and I saw this movie today. We were aiming for another, we thought, but the lines were too long, so we went to a show where we wouldn’t miss any of the beginning.
But we enjoyed it. Maybe because we had low expectations. It’s not as bad as some lead you to believe. There were a lot of funny scenes. Everyone seemed to like it in the theater.
Sure it is stereotyped, but it was cute.
Hugh Grant plays his usual character, but less annoyingly. Sarah Jessica Parker also plays her usual character.
I had a problem with some of the script.
If you were in a witness protection program, would you seriously make a phone call?
If you were in protective custody, would they leave you alone so much?
And if you couldn’t use the phone where you were staying, would they not watch you, if you went into town?
Giving away none of the plot
The ending, while happy, was not researched very well. It is totally incorrect. I oughta know.

Would you change your past if you could?
I found it funny that one of my previous posts reposted today fit right in with this movie. Would you change your past if you could.
If you had a chance for a re-do, would you grab it with both hands? Can it succeed?
The characters
John Krasinski as Harley steals every scene he is in. He’s just terrific. The guy you love to watch.
Alec Baldwin takes parody of himself to a new level. Funny, yes. But…I remember the younger version. And hairy…and a man of a certain age.
Steve Martin plays a sort of Eeyore character. When he finally lets loose, it is fun.
Meryl Streep is a femme of a certain age whose children are grown and nearly grown. It’s taken her a long time to get comfortable in and with her divorced state. Then in a drunken moment with her ex, they become lovers, which mortifies her and gives him a new, funny lease on life.
One of the funniest scenes has to do with marijuana. Reminds me in some respects of the scene in Banger Sisters.
I loved the relationship with her friends.
A whole lotta life is skewered. Young chicky babe wives. Fertility issues. (Not sure I’d want a second after seeing their first, LOL.) Marijuana. The French.
My take
I found it bittersweet. Book Girl loved it. (She didn’t like Last Chance Harvey.)
People face their vulnerabilities and come out the other side. Unfinished things are laid to rest — or not. Life is what it is. Live it with gusto!
It is a romantic comedy for grownups. Not everything is sweetness and light, but it sure is funny! And it’s good to be vindicated and to understand the other(s.)
Sometimes it hit a little close to home.
Maybe we need to see the humor in our own lives.
And maybe it’s good to see a woman of a certain age be the object of love and desire. And be in charge and make intelligent choices. Love her kids. Love herself. Have a life — and a good one!

This was a cute movie. In many ways it was predictable, but the ride getting there was still fun.
I especially enjoyed the asides that took place in the movie where others are ‘interviewed’ about their relationships. Some of them were a hoot.
My only complaint is: why did Drew Barrymore have to dumb herself down so much in looks? She looked somewhat like she did in Ever After. It would have worked as well, if she looked the way she does in real life. Though maybe who she ends up with, the way he plays the character, would not have been as believable.
Scarlett Johansson and Bradley Cooper play characters you love to hate. Not seriously, but with empathy and understanding. Sounds like an oxymoron.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston were eye candy. She plays this character well, even if I feel she’s got one character only that she plays.
Jennifer Connelly’s best scenes are at the end of the movie. The rest of the time I didn’t really enjoy her character.
You have to stay through the ending credits to see where the characters are at that moment in time.

I hope you are laughing with me! Book Girl and I went to see Zombieland this morning.
First, you need to know that I have never seen a Zombie movie, funny or not, but there evidently is a first time for everything! Last week when we went to the movies, the young girl who took our tickets just raved about this movie and said we would love it. Plus a friend said I’d love it. So, I figured, could I do it? Yep, I could. Maybe.
What’s not to like about Woody Harrelson?!!
I like the chemistry between Woody and Jesse. Heck, I like Woody in this film. He is one crazy dude.
Here’s the scoop:
Due to a virus being transmitted to one person by contaminated meat from a fast food place, humans are fast becoming Zombies. The undead are running rampant.
A geeky, afraid to live, college student who calls himself Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) because that’s where he hopes to go to find out if his family has survived, joins forces with a zombie slayer named Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) because that’s where he is going, in order to survive the zombie apocalypse.
Along the way they meet up with Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), two sisters. How they combine forces, sort of, is some of the fun of the movie.
A long cameo by Bill Murray adds to the fun.
First on the agenda
Survive! And Jesse has a list he has compiled to help him do it. So far, so good. Avoid bathrooms, is one. Can you imagine why? (The obligatory bathroom scene-s.)
Double tap, is another. That provides some fun.
Second on the agenda
Find Tallahassee some Twinkies. After all, they may become extinct along with humans.
Check out the perfume!
Funnily, Tallahassee knows his perfume dupes. And in this same scene, scent is splashed around with abandon.
Is it funny?
Yes, and some of it is silly or gross or badly executed (pun intended) on purpose so it is more laughable.
Blood and Guts?
Oh yeah, but it’s not red, and the makeup is incredible. We closed our eyes so as not to see the regurgitation.
Likes
I liked the romance between Jesse and Emma. It’s good to see her in a more conventional part, if you could call this conventional. That seems like an oxymoron.
I think there will be some cult favorites among the movie’s lines. I could see watching this at a midnight showing and knowing all the dialogue like Rocky Horror Picture Show. What will be the new I’m back ?
How it makes you feel
You want to get a fast car and a lot of guns — and definitely a list of how to survive the new disorder.
OTOH, you leave laughing over some of the silliness, so long as you don’t take in all the gore. You definitely root for the good guys/gals.
One good thing, we know zombies are not only the undead, but the unreal, so I don’t worry about meeting up with one — or a dozen!
OTOH, it gives you pause to think, what if you were one of the last 4, seemingly, humans on earth… strange thought, that.
Have you seen it?
What did you think?

Bookgirl and I went to The Proposal this morning. The theater was probably about 2/3 full — a good crowd! And there were some men, not a lot, but a few.
We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and laughed our way through it. It was sweet, poignant, a hoot (especially Gammy (Betty White) who steals every scene she’s in — in a good way), a little raunchy (not too bad) — just all round fun.
A summer escape. Yep, that’s what it is. We get enough of the other just in the news.
You can be pretty sure it has a happy ending. Believable, but happy. Who doesn’t want to see life wrapped up happily in a couple of hours?
And we saw two people who are fun to watch, not to mention all the others in the film too. Bookgirl particularly liked Mary Steenburgen as the mother. Craig T. Nelson is the father. Ryan Reynolds is easy on the eyes, for sure, as the male lead. I’d go see him again in a heartbeat. We always like Sandra Bullock. I liked the relationships within the family.
Judging from the size of the crowd, I think a lot of us are looking for happy movies that aren’t sugary.
Or are a little sugary, but not like syrup.
I heard from a friend that she saw it on Sunday with a friend, and they both liked it too.
Well, sure, it’s predictable. Maybe even a rehash, but hey, it’s fun to watch. One quick nude scene, more suggested than actual. And more of Sandra B — which is to be expected, even if not fair.
So there you have it! If you are in the mood, go for it! Have you seen it? I give it a 3. And a 7 for scenery. I’d like to be back in Sitka this summer.

Bookgirl and I went to this movie last night. It’s amazing how bad a critic can make a movie sound. It got zero stars in our local paper by a syndicated critic.
There were about 10 people at the late showing, including us. All women. We all had fun.
Yes, yada yada, it’s not Shakespeare. It’s not sci fi or adventure. It’s probably not a guy flick.
It’s just a light romance with a bunch of quirky tourists (we were glad we’d never traveled with quite such quirks) who bond throughout the trip in endearing ways. There’s some humor, a bad guy, a quirky employer. It is all done light heartedly. Yes, there are cliches. But that makes it interesting, just to see how they play out. (The older lady who steals is one of them.)
Nia Vardalos is as beautiful as ever. She has a wonderfully expressive face. I think it’s too bad the movie got no stars, because it will probably be gone before anyone hears word of mouth that it is a very nice movie to while away some time in.
I hadn’t realized that Richard Dreyfuss is in it. He also has an expressive face. Nuances in the eyes.
One caveat: Nia walks around the ruins in unbelievably high heels. We’ve been to Olympia, Delphi, and Athens, so it was lovely to see this scenery again, including the Pantheon at night (magical!) But there is no way I could have walked in any of them with high heels without turning an ankle. Delphi had quite steep slopes with a lot of gravel. I was afraid coming down I might just slip on the gravel. No way would I navigate in heels.
The bad guy gets his comeuppance. Georgia (Nia) finds love. There’s some comedy; some pathos. We get to see the views.
I want to go to Greece again.
What’s so bad about going to the movies just to have a good time.

Matthew McConaughey has superb comic timing, as well as believability when he delivers a changed monologue. And I have to say that he looks a lot like a young Paul Newman here.
Michael Douglas must have had a blast riffing on his own life to a degree, making fun of everything most folks might have believed about him. He looks mighty good in this movie. Either he’s had work done; the work has settled; or he might not be quite as thin as he was, which is better on him than the other way. Anyway, he’s a hoot delivering lines spoofing himself (and Hugh Hefner) with a straight face.
I’d like to see the outtakes. Both Matthew and Michael have a twinkle in their eye. That in itself is fun to watch.
Jennifer Garner is good always. She has a very expressive face.
I enjoyed seeing Breckin Meyer. I expected him to play a part similar to the one he played in Kate and Leopold, but he played this differently.
Anne Archer looks good in this movie. It was like seeing her in Clear and Present Danger. She brings a lot to the part, just with her facial expressions. She plays a mature woman who doesn’t cross a line into sleaze.
We walked out of the movie saying that it was one we wanted to own.

It turned out to be better than I had hoped.
I like both the actresses in it. Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway — what’s not to like!
Toss in Candice Bergen in the sort of roles she is getting as a mature woman. She brings some authority to the role.
Chris Pratt plays a character you wish were different. My companion picked up on his character’s negatives right away.

Steve Martin is talented on a lot of levels, including being a writer on this script. He forwards this part in ways that only he could, without being over the top.
Jean Reno revises his role as Ponton as his partner in crime-solving.
Andy Garcia is great as Vincenzo.
Lily Tomlinson as Mrs. Beringer adds to the fun. She’s always fun to watch.
John Cleese brings his own brand of fun.
Emily Mortimer revises her role as Nicole. She has such an expressive face.
If you’re in the mood and just want to have some good laughs, go see the movie. It’s not Shakespeare, for goodness sake!
Many reviewers want to know why Steve Martin would want to reprise his role.
Maybe because there isn’t enough fun and comedy in this life — and because he is the only one capable of doing it.

College Girl and I went to see this movie last night. The theater was fairly full. There were a few guys, mostly girls. A few young teens, more were older.
There was actually a smattering of applause at the end of the movie. Imagine that. And as CG said, none of the guys booed.
It’s basically a cute movie. We overheard many comments like this on the way out. Even the few moms who were there with younger girls expressed surprise at how well they liked it. (It’s not a movie particularly for young children. You should check it out first.)
It’s a modern take on Snow White. The 7 nerds could have been seriously annoying, but they don’t take it that far. For every nerd there is a silver lining, which is sometimes true to life too when nerds grow up.
Yes, parts aren’t true to sorority life, that they’ve taken to the point of parody, but it’s not gross out comedy with the exception of one nerd with sinus problems. And it’s predictable in some ways and could have been better in others, but overall it was empowering, to know you can stand up to bullying.
Amanda Bynes has a lovely sense of comedic timing and an expressive face. She is fun to watch.
Sara Paxton plays the sorority girl you love to hate — the part she played well, as a high school student, in Sleepover.
