Time for a FOTD again…it’s been a while since I’ve posted a new one.
Eyes: I wanted to go back to some AL old standbys, colors that I love, as well us use a new sample I received.
Outer corner: Lilypad satin petals frost
Crease and lower lash dry lined: Jade pure eyes frost — looks deep, but goes on brighter
Lined: Black powder on top
Over lined top and bottom: Delilah bete noire glitter — these glitters look wonderful; I’ll be trying out more over the next couple of days.
Mascara: BE Buxom

Face:
comparing two shades and formulas of foundation, applied over Hourglass Veil primer, each side of my face, all else is the same [Olay cream on right; Revlon liquid on left]; Chanel cream blush under my sparkly powder mix; Arbonne Promise as blush; Mary Kay highlighter up the center of my face.

Lippie AL Sweet Tart Gothic Lolita Collection over Down Under Healing lipbalm
This is a beautiful neutral shimmery pink.
Warm mauve pearl from Summer 2009 Natural mineral lip products have an average lifespan of 6-9 months due to the nourishing base oils and butters used in their formulation.

What do you think?
It’s no secret I love AL colors. So far my AL lippies have held up well, all but one color which I replaced, lasting over the time frame AL lists for their lippies.

March 1st, 2010 — Bare Escentuals, Cosmetics, Dior, DuWop, Eye liner, FOTD, Lancome, Lip Gloss, MAC, Mary Kay, Mascara, Merle Norman, Mineral, NYX, Revlon, Rouge or blush, Ulta
NYX Glitter Pallet is available in a number of colors online from Cherry Culture or in store at Ulta. This is from the Paradise pallet.
I got my hair cut today, and it surely needed it! Everywhere I went, someone mentioned how well they liked my eye makeup. The pink glitter is very becoming.

Eyes:
Base: Dior pink toned cream shadow
Crease: NYX Glitter Pallet Pink — bright bubble gum color with multi light pastel glitter
Outer Corner: NYX GP Dark Black with Multi Glitter
Lined top in waterline: Mary Kay black eye pencil
Lined bottom in waterline with MAC graphblack, just outside with earthline
Drylined bottom outside MAC: Ulta Jade mineral powder looks green, pulls gold from the glitter
Mascara:
Top: Lancome Cils primer, Oscillation over it;
Bottom: Definicils
Blush: MAC Dollymix
Brows: Merle Norman powder
Highlight: my own shimmer powder mix, no time for anything else, topped with a bit on BE on my nose
Lips:
Revlon Wine with everything cream gloss
This is a very pretty color. I thought I might want to add silver glitter, but it has a gleam all its own. This is the formula I liked so well.
Again, I used DuWop Reverse Liner just to make sure it wouldn’t migrate, but I don’t know that I needed to. It’s still going strong a couple of hours later.

Verdict:
I raced through trying this product for the first time in order to be on time for my hair cut. You can see how it went on uneven. The pallet has great colors and I will definitely try it again. It comes with 1 applicator with sponges on each end and 1 applicator that has a sponge on one end and a brush on the other. I don’t see how you could use the brush. The product is suspended in a heavy gel. It’s not particularly waxy, but it means the glitter stays put.
I used my finger to apply it because nothing else worked.
One reviewer talked about using this as liner and having to go over it several times to get it even, but that it lasted all night. I have other glitter liners that are a lot easier to use. I don’t know that I would try this as liner. Maybe! She talked about using it on her face, arms, decolletage, etc.

I need to play with it some more, but meantime I look good enough to race around town anyway!
What do you think?

February 25th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Eye Shadow, Lip Gloss, Mineral, Rouge or blush
I wanted to do the same colors as Thursday, but minus Ladystardust, which brought it more into a rosy look than a lavender. I had only used ladystardust on Thursday, because I couldn’t put my hands on Imperial, which I found and added on top of ladystardust. This look, Friday, is more straight lavender, which I love. I still used Aqua Nightmare to dryline the lower lid.
All other colors are the same, except I used
Lips: BE Bare Beach, rimmed with Allure
Blush: BE Vintage Peach
Highlight: AL Whisper up the center of my face.
AL drama queen violet to line top lid.

Again, I was inspired by Nina’s look.

This is a little more of a made up look than I’ve been wearing lately, but it is really the same amount of product. I could tweak it with a little glitter on my lips, but wanted to show it as-is.
I wanted to try a few E.L.F. products because they are so inexpensive.
Mineral Shadows
The mineral shadows come in the same jar as BE and are about the same size. They compare favorably with BE. They are not as sparkly as AL or Meow, at least the colors I chose. The minerals were the most expensive of any of the products I ordered — $3 each for full size.
Lip liner pencils
The pencils are called Feather-Proof Moisturizing Lip Liner. It has not migrated. For $1, it is worth trying. They have a pretty good mix of colors, most of them are fairly neutral with nuances of color. Spice is not at all orange, but more of a true neutral. I like it, even though it wasn’t what I ordered.
Waterproof pen liner:
This worked well yesterday. The felt tip is sharper (in feel) and dryer than the Mary Kay one that I loved that is discontinued. I forgot to try the black today. I used Midnight yesterday and it did well. Again, $1.

Eyes: All dry except where noted
Base: Trish McEvoy, then my beige sparkly mix
Crease: E.L.F. Caffeinated mineral
Outer corners: E.L.F. Glamorous mineral
Inner Corner: Meow because photo made it look matte, which it doesn’t in RL — don’t know why the camera does this — and of course, in RL you don’t go around with one eye closed; it is a flash of color when you blink.

Drylined E.L.F. Royal mineral, top and lower outside pencil line, then wetlined on top, very pretty wetlined
Pencil lined, top and bottom (no MAC, LOL) E.L.F. Plum brightening eye liner
Mascara: top BE Buxom; lower Lancome Definicils
Brows: Victoria Jackson pencil
Face:
Comparing Lancome foundation on one side and Chanel on the other
Revlon Primer
E.L.F. Persimmon Shimmering Facial Whip glimmer up middle of face (this would be good to give your face color in winter or whenever you needed a pick-me-up, placing it differently on your face)
E.L.F. Spice Lined lips and filled in (they sent me this by mistake, not the one I ordered, but I thought I’d try it anyway)
E.L.F. Blossom Hypershine Lip Gloss
E.L.F. Bitter Went over lip line and inside with
E.L.F. Pink Lemonade All Over Color Stick (such a cute little size, almost a sample)
And my glimmer powder mix.
Shimmering Facial Whip: this is a nice product and comes in several shades. The browner ones would be good for getting a tanned look without being in the sun. I might try one of those next. This has an Allure Choice Award.
Multipurpose, on-the-go whipped colorant is vitamin B, C and E packed to instantly brighten and sooth skin with no greasy after-feel.
Squeeze a pearl-sized [more like a dot] amount onto finger and blend into cheeks, eyes, or lips.
Hypershine Gloss
This was not as visible as some glosses I own. It has some taste, but it was not at all objectionable. I punched it up with more lip liner. I intentionally chose a neutral, as well as to the color range I don’t usually buy. If you can’t do that for $1, when can you?
Hyper, glass-like shine infused with micro-mirror technology to reflect light. Smooths lips on contact with a conditioning shine that lasts for hours. Create that natural lip stain of color that’s sheer, subtle and beautiful!
Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara
Book Girl has gorgeous thick lashes that almost brush her sunglasses. Any colored mascara looks mascara-y. I thought this might give her some definition, but still look natural. She tried it yesterday, and it worked well.
Achieve glossy, shiny, healthy-looking lashes and brows with the infused long wearing conditioning agents in our wet gloss lash & brow mascara. Looking pulled together has never been easier!
Today she is using the AL clear mascara. She says this went on with more product on the first application. Both feel equally light.
All over color stick This would be good for airplane travel.
This worked well. It’s quite a darling little size. I wouldn’t mind an array of colors. I would think this would work better for dry skin than for oily.
Duo Eye Shadow Cream
This is the only product I bought that I haven’t tried yet. I thought I might try it as a dark base under minerals.
My opinion, you can’t go wrong for the price.
The actual packaging, not of the product, but of the containers is not as rich as NYX. NYX has more of the look of MAC.
These are not as high-glam or as Indie in appearance when on as AL or Meow, but some items, like the lip pencils, are more than favorable for drugstore lines, especially for price.
I think my girls would enjoy having some of this. It would make good stocking stuffers. Or even birthday favors.

February 7th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Beauticontrol, DuWop, Guerlain, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, Mary Kay, Techniques, Too Faced
There are a lot of tricks to the trade when you are talking about lips. Lip prep is a big part of it.
Lip Prep
Remove old lipstick staining from your lips with a gentle eye makeup remover or facial makeup remover.
Dry Lips
Always use a balm under your lipstick and consider some form of lipgloss over the top, at least in the center.
Here are some common complaints and their solutions:
Problem # 1 My lips are rough Remove all the dead skin.
Some people use a toothbrush, but I find that harsh.
I first used a 2 step program when Adrian Arpel had one that sold at Bloomies. It is possible to use a facial scrub on your lips, but the grains are larger, so I prefer to use one made especially for lips.
Here are some products I like that are gentle, but work. I like both of these equally. I prefer the Beauticontrol Balm, but both work equally well. I use whichever balm I feel like, but I always use the proper set together, if I am using the exfoliant from one brand, I use its balm.
Beauticontrol Lip Apeel $19.50 (1.25 oz) (2 step, like MK), can buy Balm separately for $10 (.25 oz)
Mary Kay Satin Lip Lip Mask, follow with MK Lip Balm — $9.50 each for .3 oz each
A friend said this set cleared up her lips after using countless other balms that did not work.
Problem #2 Lipstick migrates into the lines outside my lips
Be sure to moisturize well around your lips. This will make the lines less prominent.
Be careful with dark shades, as this shows up more.
Use a less gooey formula or be careful how heavily you apply.
I find some of the lipsticks made to last all day are too drying for my lips, so I work around it.
Line lips with a pencil to hold your lipstick inside the line better
This works up to a certain point in age or appearance. After that, an invisible pencil works better.
You can use a pencil that matches your lipstick, one that contrasts (less modern look)(a dark visible line around a lighter lipstick), or one that matches your lip tone.
If you are using a color that is different than your lipstick color, you can actually change the shade — experiment with a favorite lipstick and a variety of pencils. You can do this on the back of your hand or just as you apply your lipstick for the day. This gives you almost an infinite number of shades with a combination of lippies and pencils.
If your lip pencil has a lipstick brush at one end, you can use that brush to feather or move the lip pencil color into your lip area or use it to apply your lipstick.
You can use the pencil first and line only the outside edges of your lips, or you can fill in the whole lip a bit (I prefer that method) or you can line after you apply your lipstick (I like this method too.)
Use one of the clear/invisible lip pencils that are on the market to line outside your lip line outside the color of lipstick you are using
At a certain point, this works better than using a colored lip pencil (or can be used in conjunction with a colored one.) It stops the lipstick from migrating.
You can find these in several brands. Avon used to make one.
DuWop reverse liner is great. One made by Too Faced is supposed to be very similar.
Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift is a magic product
This cleared up my lips in one application after I hurt them with stinging lip plumpers. Every other lip balm known to man did not work. (At the time I didn’t have Arbonne’s that might have worked.) It is slightly colored, like a concealer, so you can use it to mask your lip color to make other lipsticks true to their shade, or to bring your lips back to a natural color if they are stained from other lip colors.
It’s an expensive product, but one I will never be without.
Problem # 3 My top and bottom lip are not balanced; one is thinner than the other.
Use a lip pencil to draw at the top of the outside edge of your thinner lip. Experiment with drawing outside of your lip line to see if this looks natural or not. It depends on whether the outer edge of your lip has a distinct edge to it or not. You can often see on magazine pages that this has been done to many of the models. You might have to look closely, but they have done it. You want it to look natural in RL. Be sure to make sure that the points of your upper lip are centered under your nostrils. It looks strange if it is not.
You can use a slightly lighter shade of lipstick on your thinner lip. Or highlight only the center of that lip with gloss. Or use one of the techniques below for fuller lips.
Problem # 4 I want my lips to look fuller
Any of these ideas work, or a combination. It is possible to use one of these ideas on only one lip.
Use a darker lip color at the outer edges of your lips than the center.
You can do this by using one lipstick and layering the other over it in the middle. Or you can simply use one shade on the other edges and another on the inner, blending a bit where they come together. It isn’t necessary to use a lip brush; you can work right with the tubes.
Use a navy eye pencil on the outer edge of your lips. Carefully. This really works!
Be sure to blend this into your lip color. Use a shade of navy that isn’t too dark for your lip tone.
Use lip gloss in the center of your lips
Concentrate it on your bottom lip, then smoosh your lips together.
Use a lipstick made to enhance your lips.
Be careful what formula you use. I hurt my lips by using the same lipstick daily (wonderful color though!) by Cover Girl.
Buxom lip gloss by Bare Escentuals is very good and gentle. I love all the ones I have.
This is a beautiful set:
These are more neutral:
These are a little darker:
LipFusion is also good, perhaps a little less gentle. It comes in many colors.
Problem #5 My lip edge sometimes looks stained.
There are lip pencils that are skin toned. Use this carefully outside your lipstick color. You can also use a concealer for this purpose. The lip pencil will hold the line better than concealer, if lines outside the lip are a problem.
Rim your lips with a gloss. This really works and is a lovely look. You can choose a gloss that matches your lipstick, is lighter, a close shade or one that is different (say, a light apricot rim of gloss around a pink lipstick.) Experiment! I first saw this at the Beauté site. It really makes lips look both fuller and more youthful.
Problem # 6 I eat my lipstick off
Use a longer lasting formula or one that is less gooey when you know you are going to be eating.
I haven’t found that blotting lipstick or powdering makes the lipstick last any longer. And I do not care for the way powder makes my lipstick feel. I do, however, like using AL Rocks! glitter over lipstick to add color or sparkle. It seems silkier than powder. I don’t know if it adds any lasting power.
Try to be aware of working at your lips with your tongue or teeth.
Before you take a sip of a drink, lick your lips a bit. It forms a barrier between your lipstick and your cup or glass.
Use your fingers to wipe any lipstick off your cup or glass. It will make you more aware if you are losing more lipstick the next time you drink. Plus it looks nicer to those around you.
Use your teeth, barely your lips, to take food off silverware.
Break bread up into smaller pieces so you aren’t using your lips to bite into it. Who wants to literally eat lipstick!
Cut up large sandwiches, such as hamburgers, and eat with a fork. Or blot your lipstick before eating. You don’t want to get lipstick on your teeth or chin.
Problem # 7 I just feel like I look old
Update your look to follow one of the modern trends that work for you. Rim your lips with gloss — it’s surprising how well this works! Try it!
Try a stronger color in lipstick or try a lighter lipstick. Or both. Make sure you are wearing a tone and a shade that compliments your coloring.
If you change your hair coloring, you might have to change the depth of tone in your makeup, including lips, blush, and eyes.
Make use of the techniques above.
If you don’t have consultants for either MK or Beauticontrol, let me know and I will give you contact info for people I know who are consultants.

My take: this was a very pretty color and not one I would have bought if it weren’t in the package. So getting the package gives new colors to try. I simply reapplied this one throughout the day. If you notice, it seems to separate at the lines, but smooshing it smooths it down again. I’m not sure why it does that. It has a slight taste and smell that is not objectionable.

I thought this was a soft, pretty look. It’s not a look I wear very often, but it bears repeating. It was quite nice.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a FOTD, just lazy I guess! This is one of my favorite color combinations. I keep the two shades together so I don’t forget how nicely they go together. But I had forgotten how I had worn them the last time, because it had been a while. So today was just how it felt at the time.
Eyes: the usual mascara and brow
BE Primer, then Queen Phyllis for a smooth surface
Outer corners: AL lulu lustre
Inner corners and drylined lower: AL tanaquil lustre
Lined top and lower: Tidal Wavegel liner
Tightlined top and lower: MAC shade fluidline

Face:
Maybelline Matte Mousse # 1 — I usually use # 3. In RL this does not look this light — it looks too light when photographed. I used # 3 to contour my lower cheeks.
Highlight up the center: Revlon (new) (pink)
Chanel stick rouge
My sparkly mix of powder
Lancome Petticoat Pink Cream Blush

Lips: AL Pout with a bit of sparkle in the center
Just a simple lip, but such a pretty color, neutral, but with a touch of pink.

January 10th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Beauté, FOTD, Foundation, La Prairie, Lancome, Lip Balm, MAC, Mascara, Mineral, Pencils, Primer, Review, Smashbox
This is the first time I’ve used the NXY shadows that came in my amazingly cheap haul.
NYX TS29, White, Tropical, Silver (this looks like a soft blue)
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Mascara: BE Buxom on top; took picture before I put any on the lower lashes
Lined lower: MAC Light as Air + Mac earthline below that

I don’t know which came first, the shirt or the eye colors. The shirt is one of my many Ts from Target. This one is so soft with 3/4 sleeves. I knew I could wear the color, so I assumed I could wear the color on my eyes. The funny thing is that without having tried Aromaleigh’s reds on my eyes, I don’t know that I would have tried an orange — apricot, yes; orange, no.

Primer: Smashbox
Foundation: Lancome minerals + Lancome mineral translucent powder + my sparkly mix
Blush: MAC Moon River mineralize blush
Blush Later: MAC what was left on my fingers from the Popster lip conditioner
Highlight: AL Magnolia , up the center of my face — this is the perfect shade for me; I can use the others, but one is light and I have to be careful not to use too much; this one is a 5 second application, with no errors.
Concealer: Dior skinflash
Lips: MAC Hello Kitty Popster tinted lip conditioner, rimmed with Beauté Paramour
I was really happy with the way this turned out.
How about you?
Have you tried any of the NYX shadows?
My take:
I’d give this shadow set a 5. They were easy to use, very nice packaging, with a super mirror which was unexpected.

December 4th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Comparing, Fyrinnae, Mary Kay, Meow, Review
I just realized that I’ve never done a formal review of Aromaleigh shadows, though if you follow my blog, you know I like to wear them.
I’ve never met an AL shadow that I didn’t like, and most of them I truly love. I found AL through mention at another list I’m on. After seeing several highly complimentary mentions, and going to the website several times, I took the plunge to order a few samples. The rest is history.
What I like most
What I particularly like about AL shadows is their radiancy and brightness — even the darker colors — which sounds like an oxymoron. The dark colors have life to them. They aren’t drab.
I find for my own eye, I like the luminosity of AL shadows. It is more flattering on an older eye than mattes, though AL has some beautiful lit-with-light mattes right now. I haven’t tried any of them. I do have a set of AL Carolina mattes.
The different collections are beautiful. The difference in appearance, the luminosity, can be similar, yet unique to the particular collection. The descriptions on the website are very accurate.
Easy to apply
They are very easy to apply. They go on smooth, last all day, and the colors are amazing.
Compared to other brandsI have bought several other brands of mineral shadows.
Bare Escentuals
Bare Escentuals were the first minerals I found and tried. They are easy to find. At the time, I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to work with loose pigments, but I’ve found I like it even better than working with pressed shadows. The technique is a bit different, but not much. The key is to know how much to pick up on your brush.
I like BE shadows a lot, and I have many. I reach more for AL right now. BE might be your Cadillac, and AL is the Lexus or Jag. AL is more edgy.
Fyrinnae
Fyrinnae requires a different technique of application. You must dab the pigments, not sweep them, though you can do some blending by sweeping after the color is on. If I worked with them more, I’d probably reach for them more.
Fyrinnae, to me, is more cutting edge as far as some colors than AL. I reach for AL more. I haven’t tried to work with both together, though I might try that this week.
Meow
Nice colors; easy to apply. I like what I’ve chosen very much. The colors are different from AL and just as nice.
Mary Kay
Mary Kay minerals are pressed (except for this last Holiday batch which came in a wand applicator.) The regular line colors are pretty. They are easy to use. I wasn’t too crazy about the Holiday line. I much prefer the array and look of AL to the MK Holiday colors.
Other brands
Well, I have a few miscellaneous shadows around that don’t bear mentioning.
I also haven’t decided if I will try any other brands, because I’m not sure I see a point. OTOH, there are a lot, lot, lot of Indie companies out there.
AL sales
AL has weekly sales. That’s a good time to pick up full sizes of any samples that you want a full size of. During the sales, the samples are discounted too, so it’s a very good time to try out several samples or colors you might not think you could wear. Because, most likely you will find you can wear them beautifully.

These are pretty colors! I think if you look at all the pictures you can see how pretty the glitter is on the lashes.
Eyes
Over my usual base product:
Inner lids: AL glowing luna les papillons
Outer lids and dry lined lower: AL vigil of change les papillons
Glowing Luna: A pigmented warm green yellow… or yellowish warm green? You choose. Sparks of copper and pink add an ethereal dimension.
Vigil of Change: Intense deep cool purple with smokey metallic undertones and golden highlights with pink sparkles.
Review
Lined lower: 01 Milani crystal eye limited edition — this is sparkly with gold flecks on your lid without much color even if it looks as if there were, but on my lid without any other product the glitter felt scratchy — I like it better as liner, used more thickly so the color shows. The glitter in the package looks sparked with blue and green. I expected silver sparks from looking at it in the store. I’m not unhappy I bought it, but I think the ads are photoshopped to show more spark. I will use it for liner. I used it over the top of shadow yesterday (another way they recommend it) and it deepened the shadow a bit, but didn’t give much spark.
Edited: I returned the one I bought. It looked purple in the container but had basically no color, and while it says it is buildable, it would have to be too thick to show. Plus the glitter is sharp, at least on my eye. After it had been on a while I didn’t feel it, but at first I did. I much prefer the rocks! collection from Aromaleigh. The second time I used it to line with, the line was too thick.
Lashes: Top lashes from Witches Charm Enchantress set (black with silver glitter tips) — These are so pretty and elegant! This is the first time I’ve worn them. The bottom lashes are similar to the ones with the red tinsel lashes. I trimmed almost 3/8″ from the width at the outer end of the lashes.

Blush and highlighter: Arbonne

Lips:
MAC Flashmode + Money Honey, one on each lip, smooshed

I hope you are having a great day! (All products were purchased by me; they were not given to me to review.)

Drylined, then wetlined upper and lower: AL Cascade l’orchidee — wow this is a gorgeous color, very coppery
Lashes: Witches Charm Temptress Tentatrice Black with Red Glitter tipped Lashes — these are the lower lashes from yesterday, used on the top — I wish the photo showed how pretty they are — I would love these in Black with black glitter — You can see a bit of the glitter in each photo, but not the full effect. It’s really pretty.

Chatterbox: Rich, multi-dimensional brownish mauve smoke with frosted shimmer
Showy: Lovely cool pink frost with blue iridescent sparkles
Blush and Highlight: Arbonne

Lips: AL Pout — I’m a little disappointed with this as it appears to be going stale. I hope all the colors do not do that, as I tend to never use up a tube.

Wow! I really had fun with this one! Sometimes serendipity really comes through for you. Still working through all the samples I purchased. It’s fun to have enough that I just put the colors on the counter and pick 2 or 3 I haven’t used yet that I think will go together. Serenade pulls more blue/violet on me than teal (how it looks in the ziplock) , at least when used with Coppelia.
How to place the lid colors
First, I couldn’t decide which color to place on my inner and outer lids. So, I thought, why not do both? I figured it might be fun, and today wouldn’t matter. Surprisingly enough, it is not weird, it is beautiful. I didn’t really like the first eye, but when I did the second, it was just super. I have never done this before, but I might do it really often!
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost + BE Queen Phyllis
Alternating inner and outer lids: AL serenade + AL coppelia en pointe
Drylined lower: AL serenade
Serenade: A color inspired by my favorite ballet. Beautiful smooth teal plush matte base with a lush violet iridescent highlight. (Sheen)
Coppelia: A lovely berried plum plush matte base with a dimensional smooth violet highlight. (Sheen)
Mascara: Sapphire Cover Girl
Lashes: Witches Charm Temptress Tentatrice Black with Red tinsel! I bought these one Halloween, might be two years ago from Walgreens or CVS. They have quite an array offered online still, and they aren’t terribly expensive. These came with top and bottom lashes. update: I used them as upper lashes the next day.

No blush, only Chanel stick rouge under my sparkly mix of powder, over one of my usual primers (Smashbox purple today) and foundations.

Lips: MAC Love Alert + Arbonne Delicious, both glosses, one on each lip, smooshed

What do you think?
