Making a new lippie out of 2 or more + more

I want to know what happens to lost posts in the scheme of things. I wrote this up recently and it is now in Internet Never Neverland. Here’s hoping this one is as good, if not better.

….

I bet you thought I’d tell you how to smoosh two colors together in a little pot and use a lip brush. Well, you could do that, for sure, and it would work, if you came up with a combo you really liked, but this is easier and gives you a lot more color options.

….

If I am going to combine colors, I generally start with one color on my top lip and one color on my bottom lip. Sometimes the sum of two lipsticks is better than its parts, at least for a particular day.

Here’s what I did yesterday to show you:

Top Lip:
AL Gothic Lolita Wallflower This is a gorgeous color on its own, but not one I would have chosen. It is truly a perfect blend of pink and peach. And I can wear it well. I’m getting a full lippie. Kristin always includes samples with every order, and this color was one of my free samples. It is a perfect mix of peach and pink.

I chose it for this tutorial because you can see how you can add more cool tones to it.

Bottom Lip
NYX Purple Rain lip gloss
As you can see, this is quite purple.

Photobucket

Then I smoosh my lips together until the colors are blended. You can see how each color softens the other. I have also changed the consistency of the lippies: the gloss is more lipsticky, and the lipstick is more glossy. The color now is more plummy.

Photobucket

What I like about this is that both lipsticks stay fresh and clean. If I want to use them alone or in combination with other colors, I can. And I know I’m starting out with a particular color, not one that has layers of other colors over or in it.

This same technique works when using sample ziplocks. I am careful not to mix colors within the bags. I often use a little pointed plastic wand to grab some color and smooth it over my lips. It transfers almost completely off the wand, unlike a lipstick brush that you might have to wipe off.

Here are some other quick ways to use this technique:
Balancing your lips
This same technique can be used if you are trying to balance your lips. Put the lighter color on the smaller lip. Smoosh carefully and that lip will still be a tad lighter. Whatever is lighter comes forward and looks brighter or larger.

Highlighting the center
Apply the light color fully to one lip and the center of the other lip. Put the second color on the outsides of the second lip. Smoosh, and your center is highlighted.

You can do this more strongly by lining your lips and filling in or going over the outside edges. You can do this with a navy eye pencil, believe it or not, just be careful to blend well and choose a navy that is the right shade for your skin and lip tone. I use a medium navy; dark navy is a little difficult to blend. (I did not use it in this picture.)

FOTD AL Eyes + NYX Lips +

I felt like bright turquoise today, and that made me think immediately of the colors that Aromaleigh has.

Eyes: all Aromaleigh, except where noted:
Crease: caribe, pure hue
Outer corners: aqua nightmare, gothic lolita
Inner corners: endless sea, rocks! sonic eyes
Drylined upper and lower: moonagedaydream, rocks! sonic eyes
Tight Lined upper and wet lined lower: Jordana Sterling Blue
Brows: Clinique soft blonde pencil
Mascara: Guerlain Le2 (double sided with small brush for lower lashes)

Photobucket

Foundation: Lancome minerals — still trying to figure out how — and how much — to use; see how funky my nose looks here? I saw it in sunlight and took care of it. Generally I leave everything off my nose for this reason.
Powder: Lancome minerals
Highlight: AL magnolia blossom
Blush: AL english rose (a powder, not a blush, that didn’t show up, so used it across my face, lightly)
Blush: Meow Masterpiece Water Lilies

Lips:
NYX Lips Hebe — this one doesn’t migrate. It’s got a lovely sheen to it, doesn’t feel slippery — and it doesn’t move into liplines around the mouth.

This is a beautiful neutral shimmery pink.

What do you think?
It’s no secret I love AL colors. So far my AL lippies have held up well, all but one color which I replaced, lasting over the time frame AL lists for their lippies.

A little is enough

Our recent trip, half of which was without our luggage, showed that it is possible to be a minimalist, which those of you who know me, know that I am not.

I do, however, pack light. I traveled to China 3 times with one suitcase — and a second one for my daughters.

I could pack considerably lighter if I wore no makeup and used no moisturizer. (I can hear you laughing!) And if I didn’t need clothes or jackets for cold weather.

It used to be that my carry on had my makeup and hair products, because I felt that I could wear just about anything, if the rest of me looked good. Now, with the regulations about what can be carried on, it is impossible. (I believe I will try to do it next time, however, taking small portions of some of the products that can be repackaged.)

I am very picky about the products I use, as those of you who read my blog know. I’ve found products that work for me, and I prefer to use them.

I know David will understand this, as he was without the moisturizer that works for him. I hope he comments and tells us what it is.

I mean seriously, who gets up in the morning and thinks I will use products that I like the least: I think I will look my second best today!

My firm belief is that anyone can enhance his or her appearance with the right skin products and color — even men!

Here’s what I did: I used the hair products in our cabin, and bought two things to use along with (a shine product and a curl enhancer) (which were more expensive and less effective than what I had in my lost luggage.) Limited to what was available on the boat: I used a sample of moisturizer from Estee Lauder (whereas I usually layer up), borrowed eye makeup remover and a sample of Lancome makeup, and bought a Lancome travel set of eye and face makeup. (By contrast our last cruise on Royal Caribbean offered more upscale indie products and much more perfumes.)

I traveled with my own brushes and samples of Aromaleigh shadows. So at least I had those!

Most days I wore makeup from the night before until after I swam, then I redid for the evening (and next day.) Yiyiyi.

And I had a great time! No one knew what my best is anyway. Ha!

It was more important to make the boat, though I think my luggage is more well traveled than I am and likely has a story to tell!

One of the young women also lost her luggage and received it the same day we did. She looked radiant in her own clothes, fixing her hair the way she is used to, and having her own makeup. She said to me, “Do you see why I was so upset not to have my own things?”

By contrast Book Girl was loaned both beautiful and functional clothes. She looked fab the whole time.

I was able to make do with the clothes on my back and a couple of T’s from Delta and the cruise. I had a couple of necklaces and a scarf. I wore a denim skirt — and thankfully I had worn tennis shoes, not the sandals I had packed, so my feet weren’t cold in Antarctica.

I threatened to wear a toga, as I had in college! But I didn’t. It might have been fun!

On cold days, I layered blankets under my skirt — and wrapped a heavy plaid blanket over me to go out on deck.

And I had a blast.

I think I will try to pack even lighter next trip. Take half out again. I am tired of schlepping luggage! The hardest thing was my hair, but it is possible to do with a whole lot less than what we are used to.

You can see an iceberg behind me.

What I think:
Having my own moisturizers is a definite plus. My skin looks better each day. Someone asked me after I got home if I was rested, because I looked so good. Ha! we lost more sleep than I care to count — and got up early and hit the road running. But I was happy, and it shows.

My hair definitely did better with my own products, and I wouldn’t want to go much longer than I did (a week.) But it was still in good condition.

Now that I’m a bit more rested, I’d even consider another trip — in the future!

FOTD Bright lips Blue eye shadow

I was going for the look of the new Shiseido ad or the cover of Allure with Taylor Swift on it. Both feature bright red lips. For the sense of vibrancy, it reminded me of Anja’s look in a Theme Week at Aromaleigh.

Shiseido’s ad is likely photo shopped to get such white skin. What a gorgeous picture! What a gorgeous woman!

You can see the Allure cover, here.

Photobucket

I used the lightest shade of makeup I have, which is too light for me, then used white liquid highlighter over much of it to get it even lighter.

It’s too red and too bright for day unless it were December, but we are going to a party tonight, and I think the look will translate well.

Sorry for the smudge here on the eye. I took care of it after the pictures.

FOTD AL eyes + BE gloss (Friday)

I wanted to do the same colors as Thursday, but minus Ladystardust, which brought it more into a rosy look than a lavender. I had only used ladystardust on Thursday, because I couldn’t put my hands on Imperial, which I found and added on top of ladystardust. This look, Friday, is more straight lavender, which I love. I still used Aqua Nightmare to dryline the lower lid.

All other colors are the same, except I used

Blush: BE Vintage Peach
Highlight: AL Whisper up the center of my face.
AL drama queen violet to line top lid.

FOTD Review: E.L.F. cosmetics

This is a little more of a made up look than I’ve been wearing lately, but it is really the same amount of product. I could tweak it with a little glitter on my lips, but wanted to show it as-is.

I wanted to try a few E.L.F. products because they are so inexpensive.

Mineral Shadows
The mineral shadows come in the same jar as BE and are about the same size. They compare favorably with BE. They are not as sparkly as AL or Meow, at least the colors I chose. The minerals were the most expensive of any of the products I ordered — $3 each for full size.

Lip liner pencils
The pencils are called Feather-Proof Moisturizing Lip Liner. It has not migrated. For $1, it is worth trying. They have a pretty good mix of colors, most of them are fairly neutral with nuances of color. Spice is not at all orange, but more of a true neutral. I like it, even though it wasn’t what I ordered.

Waterproof pen liner:
This worked well yesterday. The felt tip is sharper (in feel) and dryer than the Mary Kay one that I loved that is discontinued. I forgot to try the black today. I used Midnight yesterday and it did well. Again, $1.

Photobucket

Eyes: All dry except where noted
Base: Trish McEvoy, then my beige sparkly mix
Crease: E.L.F. Caffeinated mineral
Outer corners: E.L.F. Glamorous mineral
Inner Corner: Meow because photo made it look matte, which it doesn’t in RL — don’t know why the camera does this — and of course, in RL you don’t go around with one eye closed; it is a flash of color when you blink.

Photobucket

Drylined E.L.F. Royal mineral, top and lower outside pencil line, then wetlined on top, very pretty wetlined
Pencil lined, top and bottom (no MAC, LOL) E.L.F. Plum brightening eye liner
Mascara: top BE Buxom; lower Lancome Definicils
Brows: Victoria Jackson pencil

Face:
Comparing Lancome foundation on one side and Chanel on the other
Revlon Primer
E.L.F. Persimmon Shimmering Facial Whip glimmer up middle of face (this would be good to give your face color in winter or whenever you needed a pick-me-up, placing it differently on your face)
E.L.F. Spice Lined lips and filled in (they sent me this by mistake, not the one I ordered, but I thought I’d try it anyway)
E.L.F. Blossom Hypershine Lip Gloss
E.L.F. Bitter Went over lip line and inside with
E.L.F. Pink Lemonade All Over Color Stick (such a cute little size, almost a sample)

And my glimmer powder mix.

Shimmering Facial Whip: this is a nice product and comes in several shades. The browner ones would be good for getting a tanned look without being in the sun. I might try one of those next. This has an Allure Choice Award.

Multipurpose, on-the-go whipped colorant is vitamin B, C and E packed to instantly brighten and sooth skin with no greasy after-feel.

Squeeze a pearl-sized [more like a dot] amount onto finger and blend into cheeks, eyes, or lips.

Hypershine Gloss
This was not as visible as some glosses I own. It has some taste, but it was not at all objectionable. I punched it up with more lip liner. I intentionally chose a neutral, as well as to the color range I don’t usually buy. If you can’t do that for $1, when can you?

Hyper, glass-like shine infused with micro-mirror technology to reflect light. Smooths lips on contact with a conditioning shine that lasts for hours. Create that natural lip stain of color that’s sheer, subtle and beautiful!

Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara
Book Girl has gorgeous thick lashes that almost brush her sunglasses. Any colored mascara looks mascara-y. I thought this might give her some definition, but still look natural. She tried it yesterday, and it worked well.

Achieve glossy, shiny, healthy-looking lashes and brows with the infused long wearing conditioning agents in our wet gloss lash & brow mascara. Looking pulled together has never been easier!

Today she is using the AL clear mascara. She says this went on with more product on the first application. Both feel equally light.

All over color stick This would be good for airplane travel.
This worked well. It’s quite a darling little size. I wouldn’t mind an array of colors. I would think this would work better for dry skin than for oily.

Duo Eye Shadow Cream
This is the only product I bought that I haven’t tried yet. I thought I might try it as a dark base under minerals.

My opinion, you can’t go wrong for the price.

The actual packaging, not of the product, but of the containers is not as rich as NYX. NYX has more of the look of MAC.

These are not as high-glam or as Indie in appearance when on as AL or Meow, but some items, like the lip pencils, are more than favorable for drugstore lines, especially for price.

I think my girls would enjoy having some of this. It would make good stocking stuffers. Or even birthday favors.

FOTD Compare Covergirl to Maybelline Foundation

Eyes:

Milani #06 Royalty, also wetlined lower (remember the spark on this is only on the top — too bad — so now there is no spark on mine)
Lined top and lower: Shiseido Soft Black liquid
Over lined: Avon blue sparkle gel

Photobucket

Imagine a line down the center of my face.
I used the same primer, cream blush and my sparkly powder mix on both sides of my face. I used Revlon Age Defying Spa Face Illuminator in Light Pink 020 up the center of my face. The only difference is the foundation.

My Left side Cover Girl 210 Simply Ageless cream foundation — made to camouflage effects of aging.
My Right side Maybelline Matte Mousse #2

Until you compare it when applying it, the Matte really doesn’t look particularly matte. But in comparison the CG is slightly illuminating. CG would be the one that would lift lines by illumination.

The difference is very subtle, but the CG definitely is more illuminating.

The cream feels quite creamy, but not oily. The mousse feels like it glides on, so it likely has some kind of ‘cone in it. I like them both. If I were in the least bit worried about a T-zone in summer, I’d use the mousse. As it is, I can wear either of them year round. The colors I used are pretty nearly identical.

CG has an interesting way to determine what color you use. I bought mine at CVS, which didn’t have it, but at Target they had a chart. You place your hand under it, and when your skin disappears into the sheer chart, that is the color for you. Based on that, I bought 210, which is perfect for me.

Talking in general about lips

There are a lot of tricks to the trade when you are talking about lips. Lip prep is a big part of it.

Lip Prep
Remove old lipstick staining from your lips with a gentle eye makeup remover or facial makeup remover.
Dry Lips
Always use a balm under your lipstick and consider some form of lipgloss over the top, at least in the center.

Here are some common complaints and their solutions:
Problem # 1 My lips are rough Remove all the dead skin.
Some people use a toothbrush, but I find that harsh.

I first used a 2 step program when Adrian Arpel had one that sold at Bloomies. It is possible to use a facial scrub on your lips, but the grains are larger, so I prefer to use one made especially for lips.

Here are some products I like that are gentle, but work. I like both of these equally. I prefer the Beauticontrol Balm, but both work equally well. I use whichever balm I feel like, but I always use the proper set together, if I am using the exfoliant from one brand, I use its balm.

Beauticontrol Lip Apeel $19.50 (1.25 oz) (2 step, like MK), can buy Balm separately for $10 (.25 oz)

Mary Kay Satin Lip Lip Mask, follow with MK Lip Balm — $9.50 each for .3 oz each
A friend said this set cleared up her lips after using countless other balms that did not work.

Problem #2 Lipstick migrates into the lines outside my lips
Be sure to moisturize well around your lips. This will make the lines less prominent.

Be careful with dark shades, as this shows up more.

Use a less gooey formula or be careful how heavily you apply.

I find some of the lipsticks made to last all day are too drying for my lips, so I work around it.

Line lips with a pencil to hold your lipstick inside the line better
This works up to a certain point in age or appearance. After that, an invisible pencil works better.
You can use a pencil that matches your lipstick, one that contrasts (less modern look)(a dark visible line around a lighter lipstick), or one that matches your lip tone.

If you are using a color that is different than your lipstick color, you can actually change the shade — experiment with a favorite lipstick and a variety of pencils. You can do this on the back of your hand or just as you apply your lipstick for the day. This gives you almost an infinite number of shades with a combination of lippies and pencils.

If your lip pencil has a lipstick brush at one end, you can use that brush to feather or move the lip pencil color into your lip area or use it to apply your lipstick.

You can use the pencil first and line only the outside edges of your lips, or you can fill in the whole lip a bit (I prefer that method) or you can line after you apply your lipstick (I like this method too.)

Use one of the clear/invisible lip pencils that are on the market to line outside your lip line outside the color of lipstick you are using
At a certain point, this works better than using a colored lip pencil (or can be used in conjunction with a colored one.) It stops the lipstick from migrating.

You can find these in several brands. Avon used to make one.

DuWop reverse liner is great. One made by Too Faced is supposed to be very similar.

Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift is a magic product

This cleared up my lips in one application after I hurt them with stinging lip plumpers. Every other lip balm known to man did not work. (At the time I didn’t have Arbonne’s that might have worked.) It is slightly colored, like a concealer, so you can use it to mask your lip color to make other lipsticks true to their shade, or to bring your lips back to a natural color if they are stained from other lip colors.

It’s an expensive product, but one I will never be without.

Problem # 3 My top and bottom lip are not balanced; one is thinner than the other.
Use a lip pencil to draw at the top of the outside edge of your thinner lip. Experiment with drawing outside of your lip line to see if this looks natural or not. It depends on whether the outer edge of your lip has a distinct edge to it or not. You can often see on magazine pages that this has been done to many of the models. You might have to look closely, but they have done it. You want it to look natural in RL. Be sure to make sure that the points of your upper lip are centered under your nostrils. It looks strange if it is not.

You can use a slightly lighter shade of lipstick on your thinner lip. Or highlight only the center of that lip with gloss. Or use one of the techniques below for fuller lips.

Problem # 4 I want my lips to look fuller
Any of these ideas work, or a combination. It is possible to use one of these ideas on only one lip.
Use a darker lip color at the outer edges of your lips than the center.
You can do this by using one lipstick and layering the other over it in the middle. Or you can simply use one shade on the other edges and another on the inner, blending a bit where they come together. It isn’t necessary to use a lip brush; you can work right with the tubes.
Use a navy eye pencil on the outer edge of your lips. Carefully. This really works!
Be sure to blend this into your lip color. Use a shade of navy that isn’t too dark for your lip tone.
Use lip gloss in the center of your lips
Concentrate it on your bottom lip, then smoosh your lips together.
Use a lipstick made to enhance your lips.
Be careful what formula you use. I hurt my lips by using the same lipstick daily (wonderful color though!) by Cover Girl.
Buxom lip gloss by Bare Escentuals is very good and gentle. I love all the ones I have.
This is a beautiful set:

These are more neutral:

These are a little darker:

LipFusion is also good, perhaps a little less gentle. It comes in many colors.

Problem #5 My lip edge sometimes looks stained.
There are lip pencils that are skin toned. Use this carefully outside your lipstick color. You can also use a concealer for this purpose. The lip pencil will hold the line better than concealer, if lines outside the lip are a problem.

Rim your lips with a gloss. This really works and is a lovely look. You can choose a gloss that matches your lipstick, is lighter, a close shade or one that is different (say, a light apricot rim of gloss around a pink lipstick.) Experiment! I first saw this at the Beauté site. It really makes lips look both fuller and more youthful.

Problem # 6 I eat my lipstick off
Use a longer lasting formula or one that is less gooey when you know you are going to be eating.

I haven’t found that blotting lipstick or powdering makes the lipstick last any longer. And I do not care for the way powder makes my lipstick feel. I do, however, like using AL Rocks! glitter over lipstick to add color or sparkle. It seems silkier than powder. I don’t know if it adds any lasting power.

Try to be aware of working at your lips with your tongue or teeth.

Before you take a sip of a drink, lick your lips a bit. It forms a barrier between your lipstick and your cup or glass.

Use your fingers to wipe any lipstick off your cup or glass. It will make you more aware if you are losing more lipstick the next time you drink. Plus it looks nicer to those around you.

Use your teeth, barely your lips, to take food off silverware.

Break bread up into smaller pieces so you aren’t using your lips to bite into it. Who wants to literally eat lipstick!

Cut up large sandwiches, such as hamburgers, and eat with a fork. Or blot your lipstick before eating. You don’t want to get lipstick on your teeth or chin.

Problem # 7 I just feel like I look old
Update your look to follow one of the modern trends that work for you. Rim your lips with gloss — it’s surprising how well this works! Try it!

Try a stronger color in lipstick or try a lighter lipstick. Or both. Make sure you are wearing a tone and a shade that compliments your coloring.

If you change your hair coloring, you might have to change the depth of tone in your makeup, including lips, blush, and eyes.

Make use of the techniques above.

If you don’t have consultants for either MK or Beauticontrol, let me know and I will give you contact info for people I know who are consultants.

FOTD AL lips and eyes

It’s been a while since I’ve done a FOTD, just lazy I guess! This is one of my favorite color combinations. I keep the two shades together so I don’t forget how nicely they go together. But I had forgotten how I had worn them the last time, because it had been a while. So today was just how it felt at the time.

Eyes: the usual mascara and brow
BE Primer, then Queen Phyllis for a smooth surface
Outer corners: AL lulu lustre
Inner corners and drylined lower: AL tanaquil lustre
Lined top and lower: Tidal Wavegel liner
Tightlined top and lower: MAC shade fluidline

Photobucket

Face:
Maybelline Matte Mousse # 1
— I usually use # 3. In RL this does not look this light — it looks too light when photographed. I used # 3 to contour my lower cheeks.
Highlight up the center: Revlon (new) (pink)
Chanel stick rouge
My sparkly mix of powder
Lancome Petticoat Pink
Cream Blush

Photobucket

Lips: AL Pout with a bit of sparkle in the center
Just a simple lip, but such a pretty color, neutral, but with a touch of pink.

Serums: Vitamin C in products

Here are several Vitamin C products that I like a lot:
My faves
Awake

I like the fact that you use only as much as you wish, and it liquifies in your hand as the warm of your fingers touches it.

Lancome
Sensation Totale, which has been discontinued. I love the feel of this. It makes your skin silky. I don’t know anything about the product they say is replacing it — and it makes no mention of vitamin C.

Estee Lauder
Perfectionist Cp+ is a great product and feels terrific on the skin. It is supposed to build collagen within two hours. I don’t know that it contains vitamin C but the “C” is in the name. Every time you walk through a store, put some from their tester on the back of your hands. If it works that fast on your hands, it must work on your face.

Beauticontrol has three C products. I have not tried these because I have the others, but I have several beauticontrol products that I love, and I would think these would be excellent.

Aromaleigh
I have tried 25% Vitamin C Serum- I like it a lot. I will likely begin to try the other products too.

Signature Club A
Super Strength High Potent-C Anti-Wrinkle Capsules $29.50
I like this a lot. It’s in my rotation of C products.

My second choice category

Olay

Olay Regenerist and Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging UV Moisturizer plus Touch of Foundation both have Vitamin C. In general, I like Olay products. I’m not sure they are as heavy duty as the Awake one.

Mary Kay TimeWise® Replenishing Serum+C

Mary Kay has come out with a C serum product in 2009. They were late to the party.

Give collagen a boost.* Help skin bounce back.

With TimeWise® Replenishing Serum+C, skin will appear lifted and firmed. This antioxidant-rich serum is formulated with ingredients that enhance the production of new collagen and help keep existing collagen from breaking down. It also contains ingredients known to support elastin. The formula is enriched with a potent blend of multiple botanical sources, known for their high levels of vitamin C.

The four weekly vials help maximize product freshness and provide an effective weekly application measurement to help you get the best results for your money. MaryKay.com

I don’t see or feel as much difference when I use this as I do with the Estee Lauder. However, you can see how dramatic the above picture makes it look. This is a customer’s unretouched photo, not the company’s. I continue to use the product on my neck — truthfully, I had not used a serum C on my neck before. I see a difference. I wish it were as dramatic, but then again, my before look is more youthful.

Avon
I did not care for the Avon one I tried a number of years ago. It was gold colored and sort of sticky. I don’t know if they still make it. It’s possible they have reformulated it. You can’t go wrong with their product guarantee.

I have not tried these
Lumene, which is available from CVS, also has a C line, day and night creams, eye cream and serum. I’ve not tried that line either.

Prescriptives also has a line of C products, but I have not tried them.

Do you use a C serum?
What is your favorite?

Serums that work — or not

Here are some thoughts on various types of serums and the links to posts where I have written more specifically. Some of the serums are pricing their way out of my price point. There are actually some that are over $1000 being marketed in Japan. I suspect some are worth it; others are not.

Whenever possible, let a beauty advisor put some on your skin. See if it is possible to get a small amount to try at home before you commit to a big purchase.

This is only a partial list, as I have thought of them. I will continue to update, as I think of it.

Body Serum
Arbonne has a wonderful body serum and body lotion. You can find my review at the above link.

Facial Serums
There are also serums targeted for eyes.
Anti-Wrinkle
La Prairie CELLULAR Retexturizing Booster
This just might be a miracle product. Whenever I apply it, I see immediate results. I generally use it for several days at a time, then I give it a rest and use it again when I see the need. It is expensive, but it really works. I think it works better than Renova. Price: $185.00 | 30 ml / 1.0 oz. (Unfortunately, it’s possible this is no longer available. I have not tried any of the comparible LP serums to see if a newer one is as good.)

Serums with Vitamin C
Many companies have C-serums because they work. I have used C products for years. Mary Kay is one of the companies that has just added a C formula. If you can’t beat them, join them. The important thing is to find a C serum that works for you, then use it.

Here’s a partial list of companies that have C-serums: Awake, MK, Aromaleigh (generic), Lancome, Estee Lauder, Prescriptives, Avon, Lumene. Choose the link above to see my thoughts on each.

Arbonne has a number of excellent serums, including lifting, RE9 (with C), and Revelage (whitening) I won’t be without the lifting or the whitening.

Avon has been a leader in skin care, very innovative. They were the first line to come out with an alpha-hydroxy — and it made a big difference in my skin. Their anew products are excellent. I do not care for either of their pump serums that they had a couple of years ago, because they smelled so bad. I recommend smelling them before buying to see if they still smell. I didn’t notice a huge difference like I did with their alpha-hydroxy products. Some of their products are targeted by age.

Beauticontrol
Beauticontrol makes several serums that I like. Some are targeted for 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s skin. I’ve liked Regeneration Gold for years. It’s a two step process that mixes when you pump it. It used to be that one was red, the other white. Now one is green, the other white. I do not know if it is the same product. Regeneration Platinum Plus is supposed to be the next step up, but it rolls on my skin, so I use it only on my neck and chest and bought more of the Regeneration Gold. They make C products, but I’ve not tried them as I have others that I am using at the moment.

Chanel Serums
Chanel makes a number of serums, and they are all excellent. It depends on your price point and your skin concerns. Sublimage products kept me moist even in the dryness of Las Vegas, using no other moisturizers layered in. The Radiance line has an excellent hydrating serum. As an aside, I did not care for Sublimage eye cream.

Clarins
I have used Super Restorative Serum. I likely might buy it again. I like what it says it does; I’m not sure I saw it doing it. I tended to use it more for hydrating than anything else. When I opened the container, when it seemed empty, there were still several days worth of product left. I put it in a small jar and used it to the last drop.

On the whole I like Clarins products, so I suspect their other serums would be good too. Their beauty advisers are generally knowledgeable and happy to help you. They are good about giving small samples to try.

Cle de Peau serums
Cle de Peau is the high end Shiseido line. CdP makes a number of serums, and they all feel good. I’m not sure how to choose one over the other. I have one. I’m not convinced it does anything particularly, but that might be because I tend to use others that I have.

Dior Serums
Dior makes some excellent serums. Capture Totale and HydrAction are two that I have tried. Capture Totale came highly recommended by a woman in NYC who swears by it.

Guerlain serums
Orchidee Imperiale is their highest, newest line. It is excellent. Super Aqua-Serum came highly recommended on the strength of one older woman who works for Guerlain whose skin is exceptionally beautiful. It’s a toss up which is better. Take your pick. They also have Success Future and Substantific serums. I get my Guerlain from Claire at the Palazzo in Las Vegas. Call 702) 732-7008 or email GuerlainPalazzo.STORE@lvmhuspc.com

Hydrating serums
La Prairie CELLULAR HYDRATING SERUM is an excellent hydrator, one of the very best. It is lightweight. It works by binding moisture to the skin and restoring the skin’s natural moisture barrier. A little goes a long ways and it stays fresh in the bottle. I use it generally on very cold days or whenever my face feels like it needs more moisture from the inside out. Price: $185.00

La Prairie Serums
Like Chanel, these are excellent, and it depends on your price point. I have not tried the latest lines.

Shiseido serums
Shiseido has a number of serums that are all excellent. Again, it depends on your price point and what you are hoping to accomplish.

Signature Club A
Super Strength High Potent-C Anti-Wrinkle Capsules $29.50
I like this a lot. It’s in my rotation of C products.

Retinol Wrinkle Penetrating Capsules 12 Hour Release
$32.50
This is in my rotation. I like it a lot.

Viviane Woodard
I’ve used these products since I was 18. They have a number of serums, including specialized ones to use at night. Their day time serums are very good and moderately priced. The evening ones really give your skin a boost. They are used only periodically. Unlike ones by La Prairie that are also used only occasionally, these will not break the bank. Likely they perform different functions, but they help the skin.

Whitening serums
Many companies offer whitening serums. They started first in Asian countries. It’s not surprising that Shiseido has one. If you want to break up an age spot the fastest possible way, then your best bet is laser. Be sure to use SPF every day along with these.
Arbonne Revelage is an excellent whitener, which works by breaking up dark spots from below and keeping them from forming from the top.

Mary Kay TimeWise® Even Complexion Essence
I consider this more of a preventative, than a curative. I want to see faster results. I have no patience.

What serums do you know, use and love?
As I think of more, I will update.

Review: Before there was Aromaleigh, there was Girlactik

Before there was Aromaleigh, there was Girlactik.

Glitters

I’m not sure that is strictly true, but it was true for me. I found Girlactik and fell in love with some of the products before I ever knew an Internet search would likely find me more companies than I could possibly sample. I tried one glitter, then I ended up, as usual, buying several. If one is great, would 4 or 5 be better?

I’ve used the Lavender in one look here. It’s a gorgeous bright but deep lavender.

I have colors that are similar to AL’s prettyplease rocks! glam glitter, but enough different to justify having both.

Because I like the Girlactik so well and because the glitters were around the caps, I transferred them all to ziplocks, the way AL’s come as samples. That way I don’t lose a single piece of glitter.

The colors I have (I love all that I have): White Gold; Lavender; Multi-Jewels; Champagne. I thought I also had Multi-Bronze, but I don’t see it in my stash. It might still be in a container.

Pearl Base (a soft pink with glimmer) is used under light ones:

There is a savings if you buy the products together. This is White Gold:

They do have a darker base for darker colors.

I find applying the glitter over eye pencil works just as well.

Star Shadow
This has an Allure Choice Award.
Girlactik Beauty Star Shadow is a wonderful, lush, silky shadow. I only have one color, Buttershine, a soft beige, that I bought for a base or highlighter. If you like the color, you’d likely like it.

Edit: I didn’t realize they could be applied wet or dry. I’ve only tried dry.

One of the nicest compliments I’ve received was from a young girl working in the shop where I bought it. She thought it was terrific that I was wearing the glitter — it looks great! I knew I’d love it. She said most women who weren’t her age wouldn’t even look at it.

Have you tried any girlactik glitters or other products? What is your fave?

FOTD Meow AL Eyes, Zalan lips

The lips are a match for my shirt, only deeper, not as red as they show up with flash.

IdealEyes description
My view: They are pearlized, not frosted, with a high sheen, so I felt I could work with the dark colors on my fair skin. There would be enough light reflected that they would work well. While a little dark for day for spring, they matched my shirt and I wanted to try them.

Our top selling line of mineral shadows! They’re pearlized (or, as we like to think of them, “purrr-lized”!) shadow colors with sophistication. They’re available in a full range of color choices, with a rich, creamy consistency that clings to the brush for easy and smooth long wearing application. Beautiful colors that catch the light with the soft, glowing, velvety sheen. Elegant, yet fun, you’ll want them all!
