I felt like wearing turquoise on my eyes today, and outside of the Summer set by Mary Kay, my go-to for turquoise is Aromaleigh. Kristen has beautiful shades of greens, turquoises and teals, and I probably have most of them, at least in sample sizes, which are quite long lasting. They are vibrant and beautiful, if you are on a quest for this color.
I also felt like doing a 5 min makeup today, which I did. The only reason it took longer is because I kept thinking of things I wanted to take pictures of, such as the Chanel container and my powder. So I would digress to that. Aromaleigh is really fool proof. Easy to apply; always looks great and lasts all day. I knew I could do a 5 min makeup with AL. And I had a busy, busy day today, meetings, errands, music lesson, pick and delivery to school and more.
In all honesty, there were two things I meant to do and got sidetracked: concealer, and some of the new Arbonne white shadow in the inner corners of my eyes. That would have taken 30 sec. I just forgot.
Eyes: all Aromaleigh, except where noted
Base: Nude Frost, then BE Queen Phyllis
Lids: Azure
Drylined Top: Aqua Nightmare (love this color!)
Drylined bottom: Caribe, just a touch more blue
Mascara: Stiletto
Tightlined top: NYX pen black
Brows: Merle Norman powder

Primer: Avon Magix
Foundation: L’Oreal True Match, N1 Soft Ivory While it looks like this foundation covers well, when applying it, I’m a little disappointed in how sheer it looks in the pictures. I like my skin to show through, but I like it a little less sheer. I will likely use this more as a highlighter in the future, if I try it again, and it is equally sheer.
Rouge under my sparkly mix of powder: Chanel stick
Blush over: Arbonne Promise
Hightlight: Arbonne Bashful lightest blush
Lips: CG 912+928 + Stila Silver Mix
First: Guerlain liplift primer and conditioner and all round magic product
912 and 928 are plumping colors
1/2 and 1/2 each color, one on each lip, smooshed; then Stila-Silver Mix gloss when some of the lippie was gone to refresh it…this lipstick (928) is the one that hurt my lips after using it exclusively for months. After using every lip balm known to man and still having problems wearing anything on my lips, I remembered I had the Liplift. It fixed the problem with one application. I now have one in my purse and in the bathroom. And I made sure I used it before these colors. I never felt the product sting my lips. 912 is a particularly pretty soft shade. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll show it alone.

What do you think?
Do you like to use plumping lipsticks or teals and turquoises for shadows? What is your favorite AL color?
Kristen’s birthday is coming up and she’d love to have people participate in nominating her business. See the info here.

July 24th, 2009 — Anastasia, Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Beauté, Brows, Chanel, Dior, DuWop, Eye Shadow, Eye liner, FOTD, Foundation, Highlighting, L'Oreal, MAC, Mary Kay, Mascara, Mineral, Pencils, Primer, Techniques
Here’s where I began:
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost
Lids on both eyes: AL Lagoon (matte) in new shape
Left Lid: AL Lilypad satin petals frost added
I love Lagoon, but I didn’t put a lighter color under today, so it was a bit uneven. And I didn’t want straight matte. Adding the lilypad gave it a lustre and conversely both softened and deepened the tone.

After I took the picture, I finished the second eye the same and blended out a bit. Sorry my eye isn’t completely closed here.

Here’s my finished look:
Lined: top MK Bahama Blue; lower: Sephora Flashy Green
Mascara: Arbonne (both kinds) — I’ve heard of a new technique. Using two kinds of mascara, one that lengthens and one that thickens. That makes more sense to me than two coats of mascara, which I never do (with the exception of using the clear Arbonne coat that comes with the 2 step mascara.) This is the first time I’ve tried it. The 2 step seems to thicken; the other to lengthen (which I did first.)
Brows: Anastasia Caramel wand
Concealer: Dior Skinflash
Nose: Mac Concealer, blended with triangle sponge — the sponge works so much better than my fingers which only leaves me with polka dots.

Primer and foundation: Arbonne
Rouge: Chanel stick
Powder: my sparkly mix
Highlight: Guerlain Butterfly perles
Bronzer: small touch of Arbonne
Blush: L’Oreal Pink Glow, which is really a highlight/radiance, but I liked it as cheek color today
Lips: Arbonne + Beaute + Mac liner — see my LOTD post for details. Lined outside with DuWop Reverse liner to keep it from drifting.
What do you think?
I am really happy with the way this turned out. I love the eyeshadow color.
Remember when you do shadow that no one sees the shadow in still life the way these photos show. Your eyes are always in motion. What might look uneven in the pictures does not look that way in RL.

July 19th, 2009 — Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Foundation, L'Oreal, Lancome, MAC, Mary Kay, Mineral, Review, Techniques
Do you use mineral foundation?
There are several forms. Nearly every brand has jumped on this type of foundation, even Arbonne (though I’ve not tried the Arbonne yet.)
Loose mineral foundation
Truthfully, I don’t find a lot of difference between brands — Mary Kay, Aromaleigh, Lancome, L’Oreal, Bare Essentuals — though there is some difference in ingredients. And some folks are allergic to some/one of the ingredients (they itch) in some brands. I do find differences in colors — and I’m very fair so I’ve only found colors that work for me in MK, AL, Lancome and L’Oreal. BE is too dark and too yellow.
I’ve not been terribly successful in applying loose mineral foundation because to me it goes on unevenly or goes into my pores. But today I spritzed the brush with Clinique Moisture Surge Face Lotion before I applied it, and that has been the best I’ve ever done or that it’s looked. (I used Lancome today.)
I think loose mineral foundation is a better foundation for oily or combination skin than it is for dry. But you might prove me wrong. I’m just so used to a liquid foundation and the looks I get from it that I’m not satisfied with a look that isn’t as good on me. If you have some oil, it likely combines with the foundation to give it a more natural, and less dry, look.
Pressed mineral foundation
One of the MUAs for MAC used a pressed mineral foundation on me. I think you can control the amount of minerals better that way than with loose mineral foundation — it’s almost like using only powder (which doesn’t give me enough coverage whereas the pressed mineral foundation did) but it has more coverage.
Pressed powder as the only foundation This is the only foundation my mother ever used.
One of the MAC makeovers I had recently used only pressed powder on me, but I didn’t care for the finish as well. It would work very well for someone with more oil in their complexion, but it is too dry looking for me. It is also either too sheer looking — or too heavy — on me depending on the brand and the application. And I have no oil to soften the look if it is too heavy.
Lancome dual foundation is an excellent one, providing good coverage. (I will use this to touch up.) Mary Kay makes a nice dual one too.
Liquid mineral foundation Several brands offer this form of mineral foundation.
One of the Mac makeovers used a liquid mineral foundation on me. I don’t see the advantage of this over any other liquid foundation. Do you?
Lots of choices!
What form of foundation do you use?
Do you have a favorite brand?
I’ve only mentioned a few brands. As I said, they all have minerals now.

Still having fun using some of my Dior quint sets. It’s been a long time since I’ve used them.
This one has peach, gray, medium blue, light blue, and pink/orchid/magenta in the center. There are lots of ways to use it — perhaps using the top two colors — peach and gray. Or the bottom two: light and medium blue, using some gray in the crease. Or gray and magenta.
Today, I used the whole quint to get a feel for the colors again. It’s surprising how purple the blues pull. The peach is very pretty.
Lid: peach
Crease: gray, then medium blue
Outer Corners: a bit of medium blue, then light blue
Drylined top and lower: magenta
Mascara: Stiletto, top; Tarte, lower
Brows: whatever was left from yesterday
Concealer: Arbonne

I’m still not sure if I’m crazy about mineral foundation or not. It’s supposed to be easier so I’m earmarking it for weekends. It’s also possible I don’t know how to apply it sheer enough (I like a sheer coverage.) It isn’t necessarily faster for me, nor do I particularly like the look better. I do like the color.
Primer: AL
Foundation: Lancome minerals (love their brush!!)
Powder: Lancome minerals
Highlight: L’Oreal Pinkglow
Blush: Lancome Pink Pool (has some sparkle)

Lips: whatever was left on the lip brush from the last time I used it (remember I dedicated one brush to the rims and one brush to the lips), then rimmed and up the center with Stila silkshimmer (kind of a peachy sparkle) (love the gloss, btw!)

Have a great weekend!

Going for an easy Mother’s Day look — I hope your Mother’s Day is lovely! Do you have plans?
Eyes:
Lids: NARS Riviera I wanted to see how this did on my eyes because it is marketed for eyes, lips, cheeks, an all over product. I’ve not used it for my lips yet.
Crease: Prescriptives 04 gray cream,
Outer corners: Mary Kay Silver Shiver, waterproof cream
Over lids: Trish McEvoy sparkly opalish pressed glitter shadow
Gel Liner
I wanted to see if the same technique I’ve been using with Black Cherry gel liner would work with the other colors I have. Again, I used the back end of the shadow brush for most of it.
Top tight lined: Peacock gel liner
Lower water lined: Tidal Wave gel liner
Brows: Merle Norman powder
Mascara: upper, Guerlain; lower, Tarte

Sunscreen: La Prairie
Primer: Avon Magix
Foundation, Glow, Blush: L’Oreal minerals — this time for foundation I used the L’oreal brush dipped into the top of the bottom container — the bad thing about that is if you need more product, you have the screw the brush back on in order to tip it upside down to get more product into the top.
Powder: no extra today
More blush: NARS Riviera on cheek bones

Lips: NYX Lips Champagne

A weekend look using the L’Oreal minerals that I reviewed yesterday.
I reworked my eyes, I thought, from the day I wore Burnt Roses in the crease to show it is possible to get it softer. See it here. I see that I reversed the colors on the lids, so it’s not exactly the same.
Crease: AL Burnt Roses
Outer corners and drylined under the eyes: Strawberry Despair
Inner Corners: Persephone
Lined upper and lower with Black Cherry gel liner, using the back end of a liner brush.
Concealer: YSL Eclat

Sunscreen: Neutrogena.
Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation, Glow (used up the center of my face), Blush (on cheekbones): all L’Oreal minerals
Rouge: NARS Riviera stick
Powder: my sparkly mix, that’s all; I did not use the Hyaluronic today.
My take:
L’Oreal went on well; I like the colors. A few hours later it drifted into the pores of my nose and I had to fix it by rubbing it off. That is not unusual for me which is why I generally do not put anything on my nose at all. I think it looks better naked than with little light dots on it, LOL!
I used my Lancome mineral foundation brush to apply the foundation with. I just love, love, love that brush!

Lips: NYX Lips B 52, a warm pink brown, darker on than I expected from the tube.
Here’s the picture of the day I didn’t like the crease:

Which one do you prefer?

May 8th, 2009 — Foundation, Highlighting, L'Oreal, Mineral, Review, Rouge or blush
I was excited to try L’Oreal Bare Naturale Minerals, way back when they first came out. They are a good drug store brand, easy to find most everywhere. And reasonably priced.
I liked the idea of their packaging: each product has a brush on the top, specific to the product. I thought that would be easy to use. I thought the product would feed up through the brushes, but it does not.
Plus their colors were good for me. Better than Bare Essentuals foundation colors which are too dark on me. (I felt they capitalized on BE name by calling theirs Bare Naturale — clever, really.)
I tried one foundation, one all-over mineral glow, and one blush.
Foundation Soft Ivory 456
I was right, the foundation is a better color. I am currently using up my BE (mixed with some AL to lighten it) on my neck. Then, I’ll likely use this up on my neck too, with or without having to lighten it. I’ll just have to see at the time.
It covers well. It didn’t irritate me.
The texture is a little different: it is like tiny balls of foundation before you put it on with the brush. It smooths out just fine.
All-over mineral glow Pink Glow 426
This product compares to BE radiances. There is quite a bit of micro shimmers in it, which I like. I also like the color really well. The brush with this is a FO, which makes sense. It is good for highlighting the face or even as blush at times. And this brush is nice enough to use with other glow or radiance type products from other brands, see below for how I use it.
Gentle Mineral Blush Pinched Pink 486
This is a very pretty color. I like it a lot. The brush for this is a little shorter and denser. It works great.
My take:
I rate the products I tried a 5. They are very nice in every way.
Here’s the problem
I rate the packaging a 2-3. What I had hoped for the brushes is not easy to execute. The products do not feed up through the brushes. (I’ve been tempted to drill holes so it would — I have a BE container that feeds up through the brush, and I like the way it works a lot. But I’ve been afraid that if I did, it would destroy the glue that holds in the fibers/bristles.)
Most products that have separate brushes have a lid you can use to put product in, then use the brush to transfer it to your face/eyes. You cannot do that with these, because the cap is too deep (and small around) to easily (or at all) to put product in the cap, then use the brush. This is because the cap is designed to cover the brush.
So where do you put the product to use it? Good question.
I have a separate flat plastic cap from another product’s packaging that I use with all my loose ziplock facial minerals. (Generally I dip my shadow brushes directly into mineral shadow sample ziplocks. It takes so little to use that sprinkling it out means needing to put it back into the ziplock. I don’t want to lose a speck.)
I don’t sprinkle it into my hand to use.
Still is is not as convenient as a self-feeding system, unless it would feed too much product.
Pictures, please!
I promise pictures the next time I use these. Maybe I’ll use these for my weekend look tomorrow and post pictures at that time.
What do you think?
Do you use any of L’Oreal’s minerals? Let me know your faves.
I’ve never tried their shadows. I love AL and Meow and other brands of shadows so much that I just haven’t tried any. Have you? What did you think?

Face:
Primer: none
Foundation: Lancome minerals — I’m getting more used to applying it. I preferred what I added today.
Powder: Lancome minerals, then Mary Kay mineral pressed powder
Radiance Highlighting: L’Oreal Bare Natural Pink Glow, then Mary Kay up the center
Over primer: Clarins Instant smooth — love this product!
Concealer: Mary Kay

Eyes: Mary Kay minerals
Outer corner and crease: Lemongrass; this didn’t show up well so…
Crease: added Denim frost
Inner corners: Amber blaze — normally I wouldn’t choose this for the inner corners, but in the 2009 summer colors, they showed the brown not in the crease, but in the inner corners and it looked great!
Under brow: lemongrass, lightly
Lined lower: Denim Frost
Tightlined top and lower + wet lined lower: Tidal Wave Gel liner — this is such a pretty blue
Brows: Prescriptive pencil
Mascara top: EL Blue; lower: Tarte

What I think of Mary Kay pressed mineral eye shadows
I like Mary Kay shadows very much. They go on like silk. There is a wide array of beautiful colors, but they do not have the indie colors that Aromaleigh or Fyrinnae have.
I give them a 5.
What do you think?
I like the look of my face today.
Addendum: I’m obviously not an expert at applying mineral makeup. It looked great here and in the bathroom, but when I saw it in sunlight I had to wipe it down on one side of my face as it was very weird looking. I would say it looked as if it had settled in my pores, but I don’t have any for it to settle into in that area of my face. Once I wiped it twice (in the same area) it was fine. I’ll definitely have to check this when I use minerals. Do you ever have this issue?

April 12th, 2009 — Bare Escentuals, Beauté, Cosmetics, Cover Girl, FOTD, Foundation, Fyrinnae, L'Oreal, La Prairie, Lancome, Laura Mercier, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, MAC, Mary Kay, Mascara, Meow, Pencils, Primer
Happy Easter to everyone! What did you fix for your meal? We had Shrimp de Jonghe.
I thought this turned out so pretty today.

This was a very simple look. My only difficulty was getting both eyes to match in depth. One eye went on stronger, then I had to match it. It takes a little practice with Fyrinnae because the technique is different: dabbing, not sweeping.
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost, then Meow Nicole S
Crease, lightly on lids, drylined on lower: Fyrinnae Daijodan
Lined upper: Lancome pen in Blueberry — these pens are very, very nice, in all the colors — have you used them? what is your favorite color?
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Mascara: CoverGirl Lights Sapphire

Primer: Laura Mercier
Foundation: L’Oreal N1, liquid
Rouge: Beauté Harlot liqui-gel stain
Power: my sparkly mix, with BE Mineral veil as bronzer
Blush: Meow Masterpiece Water Lilies
Lips: Mary Kay Metallic lip liner, a true brown liner, MAC Sweetie, topped with Pinkaratgloss, rimmed with a lighter gloss and used up the center too. Still hoping for a different shade.
I like Daijodan really well. It is such a pretty blue!
What do you think?

April 6th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Avon, Bare Escentuals, Books, Concealer, Cosmetics, Foundation, Fyrinnae, L'Oreal, Laura Mercier, Mark, Mary Kay, Meow, Mineral, Sheer Cover, illamasqua
Have you noticed
…how nearly all the major department stores brands have added minerals to their lineup?
…and that Mary Kay re-formulated all their eyeshadows, blushes, bronzers and highlighters a short while back to be minerals? And they brought out a mineral foundation?
…and that drug store brands added minerals even earlier?
…and that Avon and Beauticontrol each have minerals now?
And it doesn’t hurt that they are supposed to be good for you.
…there are even products for correction and prevention, not just cosmetic effects.
Is there anyone who hasn’t joined the bandwagon?
…or the craze as has been said.
Who was first with a home run?
…was it Bare Essentuals who changed the face of cosmetics, and did it so well that major brands took notice and wanted a piece of the pie?
…how about all the other lovely lines (in alpha order) of minerals like About Face (I’ve never used them), Aromaleigh, Coastal Scents (never used them yet), Fyrinnae, Joppa (never used them), Meow, Purely Cosmetics (which I haven’t tried) … the list goes on and on and on and… taking their well earned piece of the pie.
…or lines like Lime Crime , so bright it’s a crime, with plenty of glitter, whether mineral or not…
For the fashion conscious
…how about all those glorious shadow and blush colors?
…no major line matches the colors that can be found in the Indie lines I’ve used: Aromaleigh, Fyrinnae, Meow…they just don’t compare…and Hip colors, while hip (and a clever name), are not as hipster…
How about texture? Is this the next frontier?
Do you like the loose texture?
…once you get used to loose (and maybe using ziplocks) it’s a synch and it’s not messy.
Have you tried pressing any of them? I have not.
…Mary Kay’s products are all pressed — lovely colors too, but just not quite so Indie.
How about foundations?
You can find minerals in liquids, creams or powder form. The most popular form is likely the powders.
Purists choose by ingredient additives (or not) and by color and texture. Some lines have a much wider choice in color range — from lightest to darkest — and hue — neutral, pink, yellow based… But with the ability to order samples for a reasonable price, it’s not impossible to find a color and a coverage that is just what you want.
I’m not a good one to ask because I don’t think the liquids or creams are that different from ones without minerals. This is the form of foundation I usually use. To be honest, BE foundations are too dark for me. And I think irritating. And because I don’t like a powder or a heavy look (I prefer sheer or dewy) I haven’t pursued any other lines. I’d be willing to try. I just haven’t. I’m using up the BE, mixed lighter with some AL, on my neck.
Do you use mineral foundations?
What is your favorite and why? What kind of coverage do you like? Are you warm or cool complected? pale? Asian? dark?
Do you use mineral shadows and blushes?
Do you have a favorite line?
Be sure to mention any lines I may have forgotten or don’t know.
One for the money, two for the show
….with the Internet so easy to access, Internet companies are giving the companies with counters or wall space a run for their money.
And well they should.

This is a really beautiful, dimensional fuchsia.

Rimmed with Bonnie Bell Lip Shox Fuchsia Flash

I think it makes a big difference. I love the technique. Have you tried it?

I’m still not tired of Pink and Grey, so today I thought I’d use some Chanel colors.

Eyes:
Base: Beauticontrol pink; then my sparkly mix
Lid: Chanel Pink pink from Lotus Cactus duo (had gorgeous green too)
Crease: Chanel Starlight applied before outer corners to soften
Outer corners: Chanel Silvery applied second so Starlight would blend it naturally.
Brows: La Prairie pencil

Lined upper: Chanel Malachite from duo pencil, more glam in looks than yesterday’s Clinique.
Lined lower: MAC graphblack in waterline, then earthline outside it
Lined just outside the lower Jane 24 It’s a girl light pink
Lined top and bottom AL evilwoman rocks! glam glitter
Mascara top: Lancome Oscillation Black
Mascara lower: Stiletto Love this long spiky look.

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: Estee Lauder Minute Makeup Buff Discontinued
If I’d thought of it, I would have done Chanel foundation too!
Highlight: Estee Lauder Minute Opal Discontinued also
Concealer: YSL Touch Eclat 1
Color under my sparkly powder mix: I forgot!
Blush over the powder: Meow Masterpiece Water Lilies — I really like this!

Lips: L’Oreal 620 not rimmed yet…
And here I have rimmed my lips using Beau Nelson of Beauté’s technique.

Using Beau Nelson of Beauté’s technique highlighting my lips
L’Oreal 620, rimmed with Lancome Siren, then Bonnie Bell Lipshox Fuchsia Flash I wanted this to be more subtle than with very light gloss.
You can read about this technique here.
Don’t you just love the lips with this technique!
I hope you try it!
How do you like this look?
Have a great day!

March 24th, 2009 — Beauté, Bonnie Bell, Cosmetics, L'Oreal, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, Review, Swatch
It’s been a long time since I’ve worn a L’Oreal lipstick. Colour Riche have a very nice, moisturizing feel and are long lasting. Of course, L’Oreal is a French line, so we should expect them to be good. BTW, L’Oreal owns Lancome, among others, some of which are quite expensive.
Color 203
This is a very pretty color.

This is an especially pretty neutral. In RL it is quite glimmery, with a pink hue laid over the neutral-brown. It is almost a very light, soft red.
