Chanel Les Quatre eye shadow Sublimes: Marine, Beige Rose, Granite, Clear Blue
I rarely use this set, but I should use it more often. I originally bought it because I didn’t have anything in this color family. All my blues were more of a normal blue.
This set leans toward teal. If you make an X, the upper right and lower left are both light shades, though I’ve never worn them alone, say, for day. Thinking about it, I wonder why, and want to do it sometime soon.
The opposite line, are two darks, very dark and extremely dark. One looks black-blue; the other looks black-black-blue. They would be very dramatic if used for evening — or even to achieve a goth look.
You can see where I laid the lines. I used the lighter of the two dark blues to dryline the bottom. The darkest to dryline the top.
Arbonne mascara, 2 step. La Prairie brow pencil. Dior skinflash concealer with a touch of Arbonne in the outer corners.
Chanel foundation; my sparkly powder mix, followed by BE mineral veil sort of like a bronzer.

Highlight: Benefit Georgia
Blush: YSL # 19, also used as a bronzer

Lips: NYX Aphrodite + rimmed with Beauté Paramour (and a touch in the center.)

I wanted to use the Dior 902 quint again. This time alone.
The colors are:
Top: Brownish purple, light-medium beige; lower: deep peacock green, medium brown (they say gilded brown); middle: violet magenta.
You can pretty well tell where I put the colors. I drylined the top with the green. I drylined the lower with magenta. Arbonne concealer and mascara. La Prairie brow pencil.

I’m sorry that I don’t remember today what the other colors were for lips or cheeks.

I liked this when I was done and wondered why I hadn’t used it in so long!

March 9th, 2010 — Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Cosmetics, Eye Shadow, FOTD, Greens, Lip Balm, Lipstick, Mary Kay, Olay, Revlon, Turquoise
Time for a FOTD again…it’s been a while since I’ve posted a new one.
Eyes: I wanted to go back to some AL old standbys, colors that I love, as well us use a new sample I received.
Outer corner: Lilypad satin petals frost
Crease and lower lash dry lined: Jade pure eyes frost — looks deep, but goes on brighter
Lined: Black powder on top
Over lined top and bottom: Delilah bete noire glitter — these glitters look wonderful; I’ll be trying out more over the next couple of days.
Mascara: BE Buxom

Face:
comparing two shades and formulas of foundation, applied over Hourglass Veil primer, each side of my face, all else is the same [Olay cream on right; Revlon liquid on left]; Chanel cream blush under my sparkly powder mix; Arbonne Promise as blush; Mary Kay highlighter up the center of my face.

Lippie AL Sweet Tart Gothic Lolita Collection over Down Under Healing lipbalm
This is a beautiful neutral shimmery pink.
Warm mauve pearl from Summer 2009 Natural mineral lip products have an average lifespan of 6-9 months due to the nourishing base oils and butters used in their formulation.

What do you think?
It’s no secret I love AL colors. So far my AL lippies have held up well, all but one color which I replaced, lasting over the time frame AL lists for their lippies.

February 25th, 2010 — Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Eye Shadow, Lip Gloss, Mineral, Rouge or blush
I wanted to do the same colors as Thursday, but minus Ladystardust, which brought it more into a rosy look than a lavender. I had only used ladystardust on Thursday, because I couldn’t put my hands on Imperial, which I found and added on top of ladystardust. This look, Friday, is more straight lavender, which I love. I still used Aqua Nightmare to dryline the lower lid.
All other colors are the same, except I used
Lips: BE Bare Beach, rimmed with Allure
Blush: BE Vintage Peach
Highlight: AL Whisper up the center of my face.
AL drama queen violet to line top lid.

Again, I was inspired by Nina’s look.

February 20th, 2010 — Eye Shadow, FOTD, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, NYX, Techniques, Too Faced
I decided to compare pictures to answer Phyrra’s question.
Now I don’t remember what shadow base I used.* I’ll check the name of what I think it was and add it later. But afterwards I used some of my sparkly nude mix. I use this mix because I am so fair that deeper colors will grab on me if I don’t lay down a dry foundation. (I also use eye cream on my lids.) (If your lids are oily, you will have to find other products — then let me know what works. I think using a second mix as I do would work.) [* I think I might have used Trish McAvoy. The trouble with this one is that I never know how much to use, and then I don't pay attention necessarily to how much drift/slide I get over the day to know whether to reach for it again or not.]
All colors posted at my FOTD which is coming up shortly.
Taken early this morning:
Lippie: Too Faced Diamond Gloss Fire, straight up, nothing added

At 5:30 added this lippie
Lippie: NYX Lips Iced Lavender — pretty color, almost brown with some lavender — the full face picture looked TOO MUCH — but I was swatching the color from my amazing NYX haul.

Taken about 8:30 after eating, etc. not standing in the same place as this morning:
You can see there was a slight drift on my lids, not enough to worry about. When it is more, sometimes my eyelids get irritated — I wonder then if it is the base or if it is the glitter (is it really smooth or is it cutting?) or if it is the particular color range.
Over all, my eyes have looked perfect today, not drifted, and the crease is identical to this morning. So I think part of the difference in looks in this photo is where I was standing and how the light grabbed from the camera.

I’ve found Nude Frost (in a pot) works best for me for Fyrinnae, Meow and AL though I use others on occasion. I’ve also had drift with it, and serious irritation, redness of skin, but it appears not to be the Nude Frost. When that happens, I go back to my tried and true shadows for a day or so, until it clears up.
What base do you use?

February 18th, 2010 — Beauté, Benefit, Dior, Eye Shadow, FOTD, Foundation, Highlighting, Lancome, Lipstick, MAC, Mascara
I had a long, full day today. These pictures were taken about 10 mins ago, so everything held up really well. I’d say I didn’t do anything but add a lippie, but I did try some MAC colors.
Eyes are the same as yesterday. Meow colors. Mascara is Lancome Oscillation. Used Sephora green pencil to line.
I started this morning with MAC Hello Kitty Popster tinted lip conditioner, rimmed with Beauté Paramour, but I didn’t get a picture. It was really pretty together. I might do it again starting out tomorrow so you can see it.

Primer
Foundation: Lancome minerals + Lancome mineral translucent powder + my sparkly mix
Blush: Beauté liqui-gel Harlot
Later: MAC mineralize blush Moon River
Concealer: Dior skinflash

Tonight I changed the lippie to Benefit frenched. It’s a very pretty red, bluer than the picture looks. Next time I’d do the lipstick on one lip and lipgloss on the other and smoosh it. Even though it’s almost shocking, it would be great with a red shirt.
What did you wear today?

Mascara top: Lancome Oscillating; lower: Tarte
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Concealer: Dior Skinflash
Powder: my sparkly mix + BE Mineral Veil as a bronzer
Blush: MAC Moon River + BE Beauty

Lipstick: NYX Love Angel, from the amazingly cheap haul —
My take: this was a very pretty color and not one I would have bought if it weren’t in the package. So getting the package gives new colors to try. I simply reapplied this one throughout the day. If you notice, it seems to separate at the lines, but smooshing it smooths it down again. I’m not sure why it does that. It has a slight taste and smell that is not objectionable.

I thought this was a soft, pretty look. It’s not a look I wear very often, but it bears repeating. It was quite nice.

Do you like glitter in your beauty products?
I remember the first time I saw glitter on someone. The girl was about age 10. I thought it was a new and fun look and one that I knew I’d want to include in my repertoire. And so it began.
I think it is youthful
It is more youthful, because that is what youth is wearing, but also because mattes can be aging. Glitter and shimmer tend to camouflage.
It is not too youthful a look, when applied correctly and with some mild restraint. You will be able to figure out what works for you.
Compliments
I get compliments on the glitter that I use. I remember a young salesgirl at the store where I first found Girlactik, one of the glitters that I like. She said most older women, including her mother, would never even think to try it, but automatically dismiss it. She loved it on me. Considering her age, nearly all of us would be older than her!
Here’s a few things I do:
Powder: Most powder with glitter is too in-your-face for your face, even if it is made for your face. So to make it more subtle, I blend a glitter face or body powder with non-glittered loose powder. There’s no science to it. I just mix until I like the look. On me, silver glitters are better, so I put a bit more of that in, but I generally add some powder with gold glitters too. When I use it up, I make a new batch. I go lightly with it, so it lasts a long time.
It’s rare for me to wear a powder without glitter to set my makeup. I might top it with some plain powder, simply because I have it. I generally do not need to touch up during the day.
Eyeshadows: I love the glitter from Aromaleigh. Nearly always I use some around my eyes. It doesn’t drift into my eyes, but I don’t mind a bit of drift onto my cheeks. It extends the influence of my eyes. They can be used wet or dry, to line or top (or mix with other loose powders or mineral powders). Today I used it over the Milani eyeshadow that had glitter only on the top layer. Still the Milani is a pretty color.
Body: I don’t notice a whole lot of difference between a lotion with shimmer or a shimmer powder. It’s just your preference. I tend not to wear it under long sleeves — it can’t be seen. But I do wear it in the summer.
Do you like to wear glitter?
What brands do you wear?

December 20th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Cosmetics, Eye Shadow, Mineral

I kept the sample ziplocks out of this for quite a while, then I put them away, not thinking I would put the pictures up, as time passed. But I loved this look, so I decided to post it and try to remember my colors after the fact.
This was done in response to a theme week where we were asked to pick colors from opposite sides of the color wheel. You might need to sign up for the forum in order for the link to work.

Crease: AL velvetgoldmine rocks! sonic which looks like a hot orange in the ziplock
Outer corners: Peacoat or mystery pure hue (not sure which now)
Lined on bottom: MAC pencils; graphblack in waterline; earthline just outside it
Never would I have ever, ever chosen an orange for my eyes, but this came as one of the gift-samples Kristin includes in each order.
It took me a long time to try it — I figured it would be good for October, but October came and went. And as you can see, it is a very pretty color and not particularly orange at all, but within the red spectrum somewhere. (I love all the shades of AL reds I’ve tried on my eyes — and I never would have tried any reds either, except for some of the challenges and the sample sizes are so reasonable.)
It really was gorgeous on, one of my faves, and more orange than the pictures show:

Don’t hesitate to try anything outside of your regulars. You might be surprised at how well you like it!

December 12th, 2009 — Comparing, Cosmetics, Eye Shadow, Eye cream, Eye liner, Foundation, Highlighting, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, Mascara, Perfumes, Techniques, Truth in advertising
I had to laugh when my 13 yo asked to use the Spinlash mascara last night. (My review is here.) I knew it was right before her shower. She informed me that she was trying one mascara on one eye and Spinlash on the other to see how they both looked and worked. Good girl!
She is at the age where she would like to start wearing makeup, but she is afraid someone might notice and make a negative comment, never mind that other girls are putting it on with spatulas.
Her first foray into mascara was a few weeks ago, and so far, she has opted not to wear it to school. She felt it was too hard to apply, and she wondered if she had done it right. (She had.)
That reminds me of a story from my niece in years gone by. She had a gf whose mother was a hair stylist. Her mother forbade her to wear makeup. I said to my niece, “She puts it on at school, doesn’t she?” And my niece was amazed that I knew. I wasn’t born yesterday.
How much better it would have been for her mother, who had access to all kinds of great products, to provide her with good products in right colors, show her how to use them, and let her go at it. Or, give her some of her own products that she was no longer using. I might not spend the money for my girls’ makeup, but it doesn’t feel like I’m spending anything when I let them ’shop’ in my stash. I have some lovely products, a little too dark for me, that look grand on this 13 yo.
I make comparisons between products all the time. Here’s how:
In general, compare only one thing at a time.
If I’m comparing foundation, I do not compare skin care the same day or vice versa.
How would I know which was contributing to the look?
Compare over the course of the day Look at it in various lights.
How does it compare at first? How does it compare after I’ve worn it a bit? Does one side look more moist or dewy? Has it smudged? Is it irritating?
How does it feel?
Conversely, if you have a lot of oil or a steady T-zone, how is it holding up, is it disappearing? Is oil coming through?
Comparing foundations or skin care
I divide my face with an imaginary line up the middle. I learned this years ago from a consultant for Viviane Woodard who gave talks at women’s groups with full makeup on one side and none on the other. That took chutzpa!
I use one product on one side, one on the other. Everything else is the same. I look at it in various lights and ask my daughters or a friend — and sometimes even SAs if I’m around makeup counters — which side they prefer. Surprisingly, or not, we usually prefer the same side.
The differences are subtle. Without being asked, and without drawing attention to it, no one would notice. But I notice; I’m particular; and I’m really looking for what is best.
If there’s any doubt, I do it several times over the course of a few days, switching sides, so that it isn’t my ‘good’ side that is providing the answer.
Eye cream
Use one on and under one eye; the other on and under the other eye. See which side is still hydrated and has less lines than the other over the course of the day.
Mascara
Try one mascara on one upper lash; the other on the other. Compare them over the course of the day.
Eye shadows or eye liners
I have been known to actually do two different looks, one on each eye. Most people don’t notice, LOL. You can compare brands, similar shades, different formulations, etc. You can even be intentional, as for a mardi gras look.
Perfumes
One on each arm or one on each wrist. You could put one on your arms, one on your legs.
I am reviewing two now that will go up later in the day, but I’m waiting to describe the mid and end points. I’ve worn them for several days this way, but I haven’t yet taken the time to describe them.
Lipsticks and lip glosses
You can put one on one lip and the other on the other and smoosh your lips together.
Or, you can try one, and when it is gone, try the next one.
Hair products
Generally, I compare on different days, but it is possible to compare products that tame frizz, for example, one on one side, one on the other. That way you know which you prefer and which you will re-buy. Or you could compare shampoos, by using one for the first wash, the other for the second, always remembering that the second sudses up more, so reverse it the next day.
