FOTD + Take 2 — lasting power

I decided to compare pictures to answer Phyrra’s question.

Now I don’t remember what shadow base I used.* I’ll check the name of what I think it was and add it later. But afterwards I used some of my sparkly nude mix. I use this mix because I am so fair that deeper colors will grab on me if I don’t lay down a dry foundation. (I also use eye cream on my lids.) (If your lids are oily, you will have to find other products — then let me know what works. I think using a second mix as I do would work.) [* I think I might have used Trish McAvoy. The trouble with this one is that I never know how much to use, and then I don't pay attention necessarily to how much drift/slide I get over the day to know whether to reach for it again or not.]

All colors posted at my FOTD which is coming up shortly.

Taken early this morning:
Lippie: Too Faced Diamond Gloss Fire, straight up, nothing added
Photobucket

At 5:30 added this lippie
Lippie: NYX Lips Iced Lavender — pretty color, almost brown with some lavender — the full face picture looked TOO MUCH — but I was swatching the color from my amazing NYX haul.
Photobucket

Taken about 8:30 after eating, etc. not standing in the same place as this morning:

You can see there was a slight drift on my lids, not enough to worry about. When it is more, sometimes my eyelids get irritated — I wonder then if it is the base or if it is the glitter (is it really smooth or is it cutting?) or if it is the particular color range.

Over all, my eyes have looked perfect today, not drifted, and the crease is identical to this morning. So I think part of the difference in looks in this photo is where I was standing and how the light grabbed from the camera.

Photobucket

I’ve found Nude Frost (in a pot) works best for me for Fyrinnae, Meow and AL though I use others on occasion. I’ve also had drift with it, and serious irritation, redness of skin, but it appears not to be the Nude Frost. When that happens, I go back to my tried and true shadows for a day or so, until it clears up.

What base do you use?

Talking in general about lips

There are a lot of tricks to the trade when you are talking about lips. Lip prep is a big part of it.

Lip Prep
Remove old lipstick staining from your lips with a gentle eye makeup remover or facial makeup remover.
Dry Lips
Always use a balm under your lipstick and consider some form of lipgloss over the top, at least in the center.

Here are some common complaints and their solutions:
Problem # 1 My lips are rough Remove all the dead skin.
Some people use a toothbrush, but I find that harsh.

I first used a 2 step program when Adrian Arpel had one that sold at Bloomies. It is possible to use a facial scrub on your lips, but the grains are larger, so I prefer to use one made especially for lips.

Here are some products I like that are gentle, but work. I like both of these equally. I prefer the Beauticontrol Balm, but both work equally well. I use whichever balm I feel like, but I always use the proper set together, if I am using the exfoliant from one brand, I use its balm.

Beauticontrol Lip Apeel $19.50 (1.25 oz) (2 step, like MK), can buy Balm separately for $10 (.25 oz)

Mary Kay Satin Lip Lip Mask, follow with MK Lip Balm — $9.50 each for .3 oz each
A friend said this set cleared up her lips after using countless other balms that did not work.

Problem #2 Lipstick migrates into the lines outside my lips
Be sure to moisturize well around your lips. This will make the lines less prominent.

Be careful with dark shades, as this shows up more.

Use a less gooey formula or be careful how heavily you apply.

I find some of the lipsticks made to last all day are too drying for my lips, so I work around it.

Line lips with a pencil to hold your lipstick inside the line better
This works up to a certain point in age or appearance. After that, an invisible pencil works better.
You can use a pencil that matches your lipstick, one that contrasts (less modern look)(a dark visible line around a lighter lipstick), or one that matches your lip tone.

If you are using a color that is different than your lipstick color, you can actually change the shade — experiment with a favorite lipstick and a variety of pencils. You can do this on the back of your hand or just as you apply your lipstick for the day. This gives you almost an infinite number of shades with a combination of lippies and pencils.

If your lip pencil has a lipstick brush at one end, you can use that brush to feather or move the lip pencil color into your lip area or use it to apply your lipstick.

You can use the pencil first and line only the outside edges of your lips, or you can fill in the whole lip a bit (I prefer that method) or you can line after you apply your lipstick (I like this method too.)

Use one of the clear/invisible lip pencils that are on the market to line outside your lip line outside the color of lipstick you are using
At a certain point, this works better than using a colored lip pencil (or can be used in conjunction with a colored one.) It stops the lipstick from migrating.

You can find these in several brands. Avon used to make one.

DuWop reverse liner is great. One made by Too Faced is supposed to be very similar.

Guerlain Kiss Kiss Liplift is a magic product

This cleared up my lips in one application after I hurt them with stinging lip plumpers. Every other lip balm known to man did not work. (At the time I didn’t have Arbonne’s that might have worked.) It is slightly colored, like a concealer, so you can use it to mask your lip color to make other lipsticks true to their shade, or to bring your lips back to a natural color if they are stained from other lip colors.

It’s an expensive product, but one I will never be without.

Problem # 3 My top and bottom lip are not balanced; one is thinner than the other.
Use a lip pencil to draw at the top of the outside edge of your thinner lip. Experiment with drawing outside of your lip line to see if this looks natural or not. It depends on whether the outer edge of your lip has a distinct edge to it or not. You can often see on magazine pages that this has been done to many of the models. You might have to look closely, but they have done it. You want it to look natural in RL. Be sure to make sure that the points of your upper lip are centered under your nostrils. It looks strange if it is not.

You can use a slightly lighter shade of lipstick on your thinner lip. Or highlight only the center of that lip with gloss. Or use one of the techniques below for fuller lips.

Problem # 4 I want my lips to look fuller
Any of these ideas work, or a combination. It is possible to use one of these ideas on only one lip.
Use a darker lip color at the outer edges of your lips than the center.
You can do this by using one lipstick and layering the other over it in the middle. Or you can simply use one shade on the other edges and another on the inner, blending a bit where they come together. It isn’t necessary to use a lip brush; you can work right with the tubes.
Use a navy eye pencil on the outer edge of your lips. Carefully. This really works!
Be sure to blend this into your lip color. Use a shade of navy that isn’t too dark for your lip tone.
Use lip gloss in the center of your lips
Concentrate it on your bottom lip, then smoosh your lips together.
Use a lipstick made to enhance your lips.
Be careful what formula you use. I hurt my lips by using the same lipstick daily (wonderful color though!) by Cover Girl.
Buxom lip gloss by Bare Escentuals is very good and gentle. I love all the ones I have.
This is a beautiful set:

These are more neutral:

These are a little darker:

LipFusion is also good, perhaps a little less gentle. It comes in many colors.

Problem #5 My lip edge sometimes looks stained.
There are lip pencils that are skin toned. Use this carefully outside your lipstick color. You can also use a concealer for this purpose. The lip pencil will hold the line better than concealer, if lines outside the lip are a problem.

Rim your lips with a gloss. This really works and is a lovely look. You can choose a gloss that matches your lipstick, is lighter, a close shade or one that is different (say, a light apricot rim of gloss around a pink lipstick.) Experiment! I first saw this at the Beauté site. It really makes lips look both fuller and more youthful.

Problem # 6 I eat my lipstick off
Use a longer lasting formula or one that is less gooey when you know you are going to be eating.

I haven’t found that blotting lipstick or powdering makes the lipstick last any longer. And I do not care for the way powder makes my lipstick feel. I do, however, like using AL Rocks! glitter over lipstick to add color or sparkle. It seems silkier than powder. I don’t know if it adds any lasting power.

Try to be aware of working at your lips with your tongue or teeth.

Before you take a sip of a drink, lick your lips a bit. It forms a barrier between your lipstick and your cup or glass.

Use your fingers to wipe any lipstick off your cup or glass. It will make you more aware if you are losing more lipstick the next time you drink. Plus it looks nicer to those around you.

Use your teeth, barely your lips, to take food off silverware.

Break bread up into smaller pieces so you aren’t using your lips to bite into it. Who wants to literally eat lipstick!

Cut up large sandwiches, such as hamburgers, and eat with a fork. Or blot your lipstick before eating. You don’t want to get lipstick on your teeth or chin.

Problem # 7 I just feel like I look old
Update your look to follow one of the modern trends that work for you. Rim your lips with gloss — it’s surprising how well this works! Try it!

Try a stronger color in lipstick or try a lighter lipstick. Or both. Make sure you are wearing a tone and a shade that compliments your coloring.

If you change your hair coloring, you might have to change the depth of tone in your makeup, including lips, blush, and eyes.

Make use of the techniques above.

If you don’t have consultants for either MK or Beauticontrol, let me know and I will give you contact info for people I know who are consultants.

FOTD Aromaleigh + Crystal eyelashes + Too Faced and MAC lips

Well, after yesterday’s horrible lashes, these are real beauties! I didn’t trim these at all, but I think I could take some off the width.

I do not know why they stick so ridiculously to the packaging — I actually ripped a 6/16 section out of the center of one of the lashes getting it off the packaging. I attached the lashes as usual, including the bare strip, then glued in the section I ripped out. It could be that it was because they had sat in the packaging so long. Cripe!

Pictures were taken 6-7 hours after initial makeup.

Unicorn: Palest yellow luster that phases to a cool blue highlight.

I wanted to choose colors I might not usually wear (the yellow). I can wear greens like this, but I expected it to be more flat avocado (and therefore less wearable for me.) Together these are quite lush. Unicorn looks like a soft orchid on, and not yellow at all. And the green is almost, not quite a cool green, not a yellow green. Don’t be fooled by the color in the ziplock!

Review: NYX round glosses + swatches

NYX Round glosses are a great buy at Cherry Culture. I don’t see how you can go wrong for $2! There is a very slight scent and taste of lemon, which goes away almost immediately. It is not objectionable.

NYX Sparkle 05
Isn’t this a gorgeous color for a softer look! It reminds me of the look of the new Too Faced ones, but there is less glitter. Shown in 3 different lights, one without flash.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Doll Pink 08
This is a very pretty pink. It looks good in different lights.

Photobucket

Apricot 19 Wanted to try something different.
Applied heavy, right out of the wand. A glorious apricot, not quite as pink as this shows. It comes down to a lovely moist stain after a bit.

Photobucket

About 2 hours later, after drinking a couple of cups of tea. Still a lot of product on my lips.

Photobucket

Same time frame, taken in sunlight:

Photobucket

Peach 13
This is a beautiful, light clear peach. Used heavily, it is more opaque. I know it’s going to be a favorite.
Photobucket

Pinky Natural 26
Starts out strong, ends in a pretty pink stain-look, that is a bit deeper.
Photobucket

Ballerina Pink 36

This is a pretty bright but soft pink that is almost a neutral on me. It was very pretty in RL.
Photobucket

Wild Orchid 12
This color is fab too! This one is more metallic in look, with a teeny bit of spark that adds vibes, but you can’t see it.

Photobucket

Queen of Africa
This is a gorgeous magenta, but I applied this sparingly over my lips that were stained with whatever was left of my color from earlier.

Photobucket

Golden Red 04
This is a glorious color! I don’t think the picture does it justice. It’s just a perfect color with the right amount of pizazz.
Photobucket

Color Story
It comes in a wide array of colors. It’s hard to know, when purchasing online, if there is sparkle in all of them, perhaps not. But, what the hey! for $2.

I figured if the color(s) didn’t look like me in RL, they would become stocking gifts, since I shop all year for the holidays.

How about you?
Have you tried this formula? what colors do you have?

My recommendation
These are certainly worth your while to try. If you pick a color you know is you, then you will be very satisfied. Go for it!

Check on this post often, because as I try another shade, I will update the pix.

Karin
5 for color and applicator
5 for moisture
4+ for gloss feel, a little slippery, but still nice, not sticky at all
4+ for lasting power, it might migrate a little, but not much

Review: Too Faced Girls Dig Pearls Gloss +

Girls Dig Pearls glosses are amazingly beautiful. They have stunning almost holographic glitters.

I started out with one tube, liked it so well that I then went back for more.

I had an excellent SA at Sephora who showed me that she layered the gloss she bought with Caspian Lustre Liner, so I bought the pencil too. She layered the pencil with Pink Bling GDP gloss, which is what I did today also.

Shade descriptions:
Caspian pencil — coppery, pink-brown with lustre
Pink Bling — looks white in the tube with flashes of iridescent, light bright pink glitter
Mermaid — looks beige in tube, then you notice pink glitter — I bought this because another SA was wearing it alone on her lip and it was such a beautiful neutral
Shell light pink with pink glitter, the glitter might be the same as in Mermaid
Tropical Pink orchid magenta with deeper bright pink glitter

Taken in direct sunlight
Top to bottom: Caspian pencil; Pink Bling; Mermaid; Shell; Tropical Pink

Photobucket

Caspian and Pink Bling, using Beauté techniques:
Technique: See more at my blog here.
Applied Pink Bling on lower lip, Caspian on top; smooshed lips together (keeps both clean); used lip brush to add tiny bit of Pink Bling along outer edge of upper lip (it was already on the lower and didn’t need touch up.)

Photobucket

Taken in full sunlight
So you can see how pretty it is!

You can see the subtlety of the lip technique here.

Oh, I just love that lipstick — everything about it!

Day 2
Mermaid using Pink Bling on rim

I love, love, love this technique. I used Guerlain Lip Lift to block out any stain on my lips so this would be a fairly true picture.

Photobucket

Do you have these glosses? Do you love them?
I wear mine both alone and with the Caspian pencil. I have worn the pencil alone also. I have not worn them with other brands.

If you are a gloss addict
You need these in your stash. Start with what you think would be your fave, then add to it, if you love it.

LOTD Review: Maybelline Colorsensational

Colorsensational is Maybelline’s newest formula in lipstick with a wide array of colors. I think it has a lovely feel on the lips. I had a hard time choosing which color(s) to buy.

Crushed Coral
I wanted to try one of these new colors, and I adored this on someone else. Often she and I can wear the same colors, especially in shadows, but it’s not quite deep enough for me when used alone. I used the lipstick with the same gloss as she does, but it’s still too much bright warm pink/apricot. Maybe it would be perfect for you!

Here’s where I began:
Arbonne lip balm
Maybelline Crushed Coral + Too Faced Sapphire Spark gloss one on each lip and smooshed–

Photobucket

Here’s where I ended up:
Lined and filled in: MAC Soar pencil
This looks more plum in some lights and more autumn toned in others. It changed the depth and tone to a color that works with my coloring.
Photobucket

Lips Maybelline Madison Mauve 465
This is the second color that I bought, and I am really happy with it. My 12 yo daughter’s first words to me were, “Oh, I like that lipstick!” It has a very pretty glow. It’s not frosted, but it has some shimmer (not glitter.) I seriously wanted to wear it again for today’s fotd photo, but I resisted. I’ll put it on later.

Photobucket

Have you tried these lipsticks yet?
Do you have a favorite color?

I give it a 3, but if Crushed Coral had worked on me, I’d have given them a 4. Silly, yes?

FOTD Catching up

What with school starting next week and two registrations this week plus reading the new Jim Butcher book, I’m behind in posting, so I figured I’d better catch up! If I get too far behind, I can’t remember what I did. What’s fun about doing two days is that it is easy to compare colors.

This is a gorgeous color, with sort of a turquoise micro glitter on top of it — the bad thing is that the glitter is only on top, so once you get past the top, it is gone. I work from only one area so I can see what the glitter looked like. This really does seem like bait and switch.

LOTD Maybelline + MAC liner

Here’s where I began:
Arbonne lip balm
Maybelline Crushed Coral + Too Faced Sapphire Spark gloss one on each lip and smooshed– I wanted to try a new color, but this one isn’t quite for me when used alone. It is too much of a spring color, bright warm pink/apricot.

Photobucket

Here’s where I ended up:
Lined and filled in: MAC Soar pencil
This looks more plum in some lights and more autumn toned in others. It changed the depth and tone to a color that works with my coloring.
Photobucket

The container is very pretty and rich feeling. It is color coded to the color family of the lipstick. So this is a rich red plastic. Others are purple and etc. I found this at Walgreen’s. CVS didn’t have it yet.

Here it is full face:
Photobucket

Primer and Foundation: Aromaleigh — this looks better in the picture than in RL. I tried to use very little, as little as possible, to see if that makes a difference in how it wears through the day. But I didn’t get enough coverage. In sunlight I don’t look finished enough. It’s almost easier for me to do my regular routine than to learn how to use minerals! I look more shiny than glowy or dewy.

FOTD Avon eyes + Lancome +

I wanted something fast and easy — which, of course, never quite ends as expected.

Eyes: nearly all Avon
Base: Avon Lilac Glace
Crease and outer corners: Avon Mark I-Sheer Fondue
— This is a beautiful, deep green. It’s hard to get this even on my light skin; I used a bit of water to smooth it out — I’d rather it be perfect, but hey! it’s summer…and unless my eyes are closed, it looks fine…I usually use it for liner.
Wetlined lower: Lancome Ice Princess, pencil, discontinued — one of my favorite colors, is a shadow and that’s how I usually use it.
Lined upper: Avon Mark Mini Marina pencil
Mascara: Arbonne 2 step
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Concealer: YSL Touch Eclat

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Face:
Primer: Arbonne — this has the consistency of SCA’s Wrinkle Filament, which is more apricot in color — Arbonne is a bit smoother in feel, less thick
Foundation: Chanel — still going strong!
Blush under powder: Chanel stick, discontinued
Powder: my sparkly mix, followed by SCA’s hyaluronic
Blush over powder: Lancome Petticoat Pink, cream — love this color!

Photobucket

Lips:
Arbonne Tickled + Too Faced Make Nice, smooshed; rimmed with Avon Mark Mini Pink pencil
This gives the effect of pencil lining, but is softer.
Photobucket

Arbonne update:
I used the mask this morning. I’ve been using the lift product every day, especially around my eyes. So far, so good!

Review Too Faced Sparkle Glamour Gloss

This gloss is not in a usual lip gloss tube. The tube is hard plastic, with holes at the top that the gloss feeds through as you turn the bottom.

I got 3 of the 4 colors when Too Faced had a great vintage sale. I suspect they are discontinued now, but you can still find them on the Internet.

Pink Bling
This looks like it would be clear or white in the tube, but in fact is a lovely medium pink with sparks.
Photobucket

Violet Vapor
This is a gorgeous orchid shade.
Photobucket

Sapphire Spark
I don’t have a picture of this by itself, only in combination here. Sapphire Spark is just what you’d think, almost a clear gloss shot with sapphire blue. I think it’s quite pretty.
Chocolate Diamond Gloss + Sapphire Spark
Chocolate tastes a little chocolatey.
Chocolate is a glorious color, almost a copper with gold micro shimmers in it.

It also smells a little chocolatey. I don’t notice that either the taste or smell lasts. The combination really has beautiful micro shimmers in it. I will definitely wear it again. Both colors will likely be faves.

Diamond Gloss can be used all over your body, including your eyes, but I feel it would be too gooey.

Applied as usual, one on each lip, then smooshed. I didn’t want to wait to try the colors, so I figure this way I can try 2 for 1.

The longer the combination is on, the more it melds. Four hours after I took the pictures, and it was just as pretty.

Photobucket

My take:
I’ve never met a Too Faced gloss I didn’t love. These are no exception. They are really quite lovely. I love them all.

I give them a 5.

Do you have these?
Do you have any Too Faced glosses? I bet you love them as I do. What are your favorites?

FOTD AL eyes + Too Faced

I liked this look! What do you think?

Eyes: AL, unless noted
Base:
forget now, possibly Trish McAvoy, then my sparkly nude mix — this also makes the Grape a little less matte. I might try a black base for a change, but truthfully, I think this is about as dark as I can carry anyway. My skin sort of reads a true color for all colors; it’s like a white sheet of paper, though not white, of course.
Crease: Ozone Rocks!
Lids and drylined lower: Grape, matte — I love this color and wondered how it would look with turquoise
Tight lined top and lower: Fernand Aubry Moredore – hard to get this to draw on my eyes (it’s really old) but it drew on my hand just fine! It’s a pretty color, plus it’s French. Used to be sold at JCP.
Mascara: Guerlain, top; Tarte, lower (if you check out my lasting post, you can see how well the mascara lasts thru the day)
Brows: Chanel pencil
Concealer: Dior skinflash
Drylined top and lower: Girlactik multi-jewels

Much better with my hair colored! Redken 10 NW + 20% peroxide. Left it on about 5 mins longer today, which is why it is pulling a little more ash.

Photobucket

Primer: Smashbox W/Dermaxl — didn’t want to change the color of the foundation
Foundation: Chanel, discontinued
Rouge: Lancome China Berry stick, also discontinued
Powder: my sparkly mix, the Signature Club A Hyaluronic
Blush: Lancome Petticoat Pink cream high on cheeks

Lips: Too Faced Diamond Gloss, Fire

Photobucket

The picture makes my foundation look really sheer again, so I might have to switch my sunscreen away from the one that is moisturizing.

I think I’ll do AL Gothic Lolita eyes tomorrow. And Fyrinnae lips.

Review: MAC Dazzleglass

What a great color!

Here’s a full face picture of it:

Baby Sparks
MAC

Smile + Baby Sparks
MAC Smile + Baby Sparks

Smile + Baby Sparks, rimmed with Beauté Allure
Smile Baby Sparks Allure

What are the colors
I sorted them by color range:

** I bought this one.
* Recommended at Shades of U, who also has swatches across her hand.

BEIGE
Get Rich Quick Warm yellow brown
Girl’s Delight Sheer mid-tone tan with gold pearl
*Goldyrocks Sheer soft yellow with pink and gold pearl
**Moth to Flame Sheer neutral beige with violet pearl **

CORAL
*Smile Light coral with pink and gold pearl (I bought this one)**

ORANGE
Bare Necessity Caramel apricot with red and gold pearl
Utterly Posh Mid-tone orange with pink and gold pearl

ORCHID
Extra Amps Sheer bright blue pink with blue and pink pearl
*Funtabulous Purple with violet pearl **
Like Venus Clean light bubble gum pink with red pearl
*Stop! Look! Sheer violet mauve with blue and pink pearl

PINK
*Baby Sparks Pale pink with violet pearl**
**Rags to Riches Plummy pink with teal and red pearl

PLUM
Date Night Deep plum with blue and gold pearl

RED

Love Alert Raspberry red with red pearl **

ROSE
**Money Honey Mid-tone rosy mauve with red pearl
*Steppin’ Out Clean yellow pink with red pearl

WHITE
*Sugarrimmed Milky pale pink with red, teal and white pearl**

The colors I bought
I chose to buy 6 — Baby Sparks, Funtabulous, Love Alert, Moth to Flame, Smile, Sugarrimmed.

I didn’t buy an orange as I have a couple of wonderful oranges from Lancome and NYX.

And it was hard to narrow them down! I think I could have bought all of them, but I was trying to be good. The same MUA who had given me a wonderful MAC makeover at SAKS was working the day I went in. She helped me pick out 6 across the range. Some will make a color close to the color(s) I didn’t buy, by combining them. OTOH, they might not have the same flash of micro shimmers in them.

My take
There’s not a whole lot to say about these fabulous glosses that hasn’t already been said, as they are being talked about everywhere. They are lovely colors, feel good, moisturize well, are very high fashion in looks as Too Faced glosses are. I rate them a 5 across the board.

I will continue to add pictures as I wear the colors.

How about you?
Do you have any of these? all of them? How do you like them? Which is your favorite? Are you going to buy more? (I probably would if the stores that sell it were closer!)
