January 10th, 2010 — Age, Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Avon, Chanel, Comparing, Guerlain, Hourglass, La Prairie, Laura Mercier, MAC, Primer, Review, Revlon, Sheer Cover, Signature Club A, Smashbox, Techniques, Un femme d'un certain age
Updated to include my review of Hourglass primer (and comparing it to Chanel’s Illuminating Base.) And also as a reminder about the value of using a primer.
To prime or not to prime, that is the question.
If you’ve not used a primer, try one and see what you think. Get a makeover and ask that they use one.
If you truly don’t like a primer, return it, if you bought it at a physical store. There are enough primers out there now, that you can find one that you love.
If you are using a primer, I’m guessing you will never go back to without.
Why prime?
What is the purpose of primer?
Primer perfects your look. It makes the surface of your skin silky with less visible imperfections, so you use less foundation. Your products glide over the top, meaning you need less foundation to cover.
What is primer made of?
Usually there is some silicone or one of the ‘cones’ in it to create a smooth surface on the skin.
Some folks even use Monistat gel for an inexpensive alternative.
How does it work?
Most primers are the last step before applying your foundation.
Primer slips over the skin, creating a light barrier, usually with silicone. Foundation glides on easier, goes on smoother, and covers better with less product.
Under a certain age, some primers will stop oil from coming through and messing with your look.
Once a certain age, a primer may act like spackle, one even has that name, gently filling in lines and pores to give a smooth surface for foundation and optically take time off your age.
Is it strictly cosmetic or is it also corrective?
All perform a cosmetic service; some are also corrective.
Color correction
Some primers color correct or add a sheer layer of color. Others are clear. Both Smashbox and Revlon Vital Radiance have multiple colors to correct.
Guerlain Meteorites Perles
Light-Diffusing Perfecting Primer; Base Perfection. Great little powder balls that color correct and do other neat things.
Contact Claire at Guerlain at the Palazzo in Las Vegas for all your Guerlain needs. (702) 732-7008. If you’re in town, stop in to visit!
Vital Radiance Smoothing Face Primer, SPF 25, Petal 002, Cool, 1 fl oz
which has been discontinued, can still be found on occasion. It came in two colors, cool and warm. I use cool.
Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer
is another good one. I use the purple. Purple will also bring a foundation into a cooler tone. One minimizes red tones; one minimizes yellow or sallow tones; one minimizes dark circles, veins, and dark spots. (The best thing for dark spots is using a lightening product or having them removed either by laser or by freezing.)
Some have added ingredients that benefit your skin.
Aromaleigh Easy applicator pump bottle. Very nice product.
The best “canvas” for any type of makeup is a perfect, smooth canvas. This is what we are all seeking, and for many, mineral makeup brings us one step closer.
Lock in hydration while smoothing and retexturizing your skin’s appearance and maximizing your makeup…
With natural oils of Safflower, Grape and Camellia, Vitamins E and A and advanced polymers… our primer combines nature with science to get your skin where you need it to go.
Less is more, just like with mineral makeup. Your primer can be blended with your moisturizer or sunscreen, or used on it’s own. It can even be combined with a small amount of powder to create an easy to apply mineral makeup/primer combination that smooths to a velvety finish. Aromaleigh
Arbonne Virtual Illusion makeup primer
Supposedly acts like a natural botox to improve the surface of your skin.
Create a flawless canvas for makeup application with this advanced primer. A blend of vitamins, skin-perfecting pigments, advanced cushioning and anti-aging ingredients work in harmony to help tone, smooth and minimize the visual appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. The result is a velvety, matte, radiant finish.
GABA, hyaluronic acid, polypeptides, gamma orizinol, light deflecting pigments, B-glycherritinic acid; horsetail extract, green tea leaf and grape seed extracts
Guerlain
L’Or – has real flecks of gold in it and creates a lovely look.
Again, contact Claire, see above.
La Prairie
I have not tried this white one.
La Prairie for eyes
Shiseido Benefiance Facial Lifting Complex also works to firm.
Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF15 with Dermaxyl Complex (Unboxed)
Here are some good ones:
Avon Magix evidently stops oil too; has a fairly heavy consistency; is generally well liked by everyone. Very reasonably priced at $10.
Smashbox – comes in clear (I like the purple better), purple (to correct skin tone, but it works to cool up colors of foundation that are a bit yellow),green (ditto, I haven’t tried this one) and an apricot one that has ingredients to benefit skin (I like the idea of this.) To me they all feel the same, but the clear one seems to do less. Placebo effect, likely!
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer oil free spf 15 $52
I loved this product. It has a slight radiance to it which makes my skin look perfect. This is something I likely will be buying. 132 people reviewed it at Sephora, giving it an average of more than 4.5 stars.
Today I compared it to Chanel’s SHEER ILLUMINATING BASE. Both illuminate; Hourglass seems more slippery. I preferred the look of Hourglass once I had on my foundation and sparkly powder mix. I generally use Chanel’s only up the center of my face as a highlighter.
It is water-resistant and 100% fragrance free, oil free, and paraben free. It does not have an odd smell because of ingredients. I smell nothing.
It neutralizes the skin, creating a smooth, uniform slate for makeup application. Don’t forget the slight radiance which evenly distributes light to soften and camouflage skin imperfections and fine lines. It also protects from oil breakthrough, so your makeup stays looking fresh longer.
It has no
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Synthetic Dyes
- Phthalates
The SPF is formulated with naturally-derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide rather than chemical sun-blocking agents.
These work, but I don’t like them as well
Laura Geller Spackle – Sephora sampled this.
It started out white and got taupe colored when exposed to air. The sample was in a pot. The full size is in a pump which would eliminate exposure to air.
Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Oil Free
Sephora sampled this also. It was one of the first on the market.
Revlon It’s OK, but I didn’t like it as well. Comes in two formulas.
Revlon Age Defying Instant Firming Face Primer for Normal/Combination Skin (Pack of 2)
Sheer Cover Light weight. Still, it is nice.
Smashbox Highlight and Prime together
You can read my review here. I don’t like the dual delivery system. It doesn’t feed evenly. You have to cover one side to make sure the other feeds. I love the color though. Would be better to have just had the highlight to use as you wish, and add to your primer or not, as you wish. Or have two separate tubes in the set vs. 2 in 1 tube.
How about perfecting your look even more?
There are products you can apply over your makeup that filter out and soften lines, similar to when Doris Day was filmed through a special lens.
Clarins makes a great one!
Use this around your mouth or eyes, wherever you need extra help. Try it out at one of the counters.
La Prairie
Pink colored, quite a heavy consistency. Pricey. No better than some and less than others. Evidently, it comes in gold too. I think it is quite thick.
The eye product tends to roll some, but the look is pretty.
Signature A Wrinkle Filiment
is heavier, similar to La Prairie’s, but apricot colored.
MAC Prep and Prime
Prep and prime is a face primer. I like prep and prime better than Smashbox Photo finish because it doesn’t have that slick feel to it. It’s not all silicone. I recommend it. Miranda
MAC Black eye primer
I also bought MAC’s black eye primer. It makes a huge difference in how the eyeshadow looks. Want a paler, more natural look, use a skin toned primer. Want uber kapow and drama for evening, use black primer! Miranda
Do you use a primer?
Which one(s) do you use or have you tried?
Let me know if I left out any that you particularly love.
Nearly every line has a primer in their arsenal now. I’d like to hear about any good ones!

July 27th, 2009 — Arbonne, Benefit, Brows, Chanel, Clinique, Dior, Eye Shadow, FOTD, Foundation, Highlighting, Lip Gloss, MAC, Mary Kay, Primer, Rouge or blush, Sheer Cover, Take 2
I was matching my top, which is a serendipitous match to a wonderful wrap skirt/dress from Las Vegas. They sell these wraps in several places, including inside and outside the mall and by the Venetian food court, but I hadn’t bought one until this past trip. It looks best on me as a skirt. My girls wear theirs as dresses too. All you are limited by is your imagination and the colors of the patterns they have. Included in the price is a DVD with styles and a sheet detailing how to wrap.
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost
Shadows: Sheer Cover Eye collection, the warm colors
Drylined top and lower: AL Lagoon
Brows: Clinique pencil
Concealer: Dior Skinflash
Nose: MAC Concealer, blended with triangle sponge

Primer and Foundation: Arbonne
Rouge: MK stick
Powder: My sparkly powder
Highlight up the center of my face: Benefit Georgia Peach
Blush: Chanel Rose Petal

Lips: Arbonne Gleam a perfect match!

Take 2
Later during Book Girl’s Arbonne party I layered up the Audrey Eye Look over the top of this one. I never thought to take a picture of me. I was too busy taking every one else’s picture!
What do you think?
I was really pleased with how this turned out. Days like this I think I should keep a color log of really, really good combos. I feel the same way when I get a good comment here. I go back and take a second look to remember what I did.

July 21st, 2009 — Arbonne, Bare Escentuals, Brows, Chanel, Eye Shadow, Eye liner, FOTD, Foundation, Highlighting, Lip Balm, Lip pencil, Lipstick, MAC, Mary Kay, Mascara, Mineral, Pencils, Primer, Review, Revlon, Sephora, Sheer Cover, Techniques
I wanted to go in a completely different direction today. I started the day by moving a large display coffee table (with my kids’ help.) This table displays Bookgirl’s art (and the little ones) in the upper drawer under a large sheet of glass. That took a good hour or so to get it all organized again in the new location. So a different direction was happening with more than my makeup.
Not too long ago I had a makeover at Sephora. I didn’t realize Sephora was offering one that day and never thought to bring a camera. We were able to choose 1 of three looks, and I chose smokey eyes. (Another choice would have been lips. I don’t know what the 3rd was.) The MUA did a fantastic job using the Sephora smokey eye set. I sure wish I’d taken a picture when I got home. Instead I took it the next morning. This is my lip color, not the one she used from Korres, which was almost flesh colored, but the color she used sure worked with the look!
Today I was inspired by the postcard of the look on a model. No color on her eyes, just smoke.

Eyes:
Base: MK applied wet and allowed to dry
Lids: Bare Essentuals Rock Star colors — a medium gray, a sparkly silvery gray, and a black-black smudgy black. The set also included a dual ended brush(s) — I’ve had it a while, so I’m not sure if there were 2 or not — but the one brush has a tiny point on it, though the brush is fat and round, and this works great to smudge and line with this really, really dark color. [I give this set a 4. If you want smoke, this is a beautiful set.]
Brows: mixture of the two darker (which looked light, until on my brows, LOL!) (cool and warm shades) from the Sheer Cover shadow palette. One looks like a medium brown; the other like a golden brown. Sometimes it’s easier to use a shadow to do brows, but use a light hand as it can fool you and be darker than you expect.
Mascara:Arbonne, 2 in 1 — I wanted the mascara to stay, not drift, and Arbonne seems to stay well.
Lined: MAC blackgraph tightlined top and lower, with Earthline below the lower line.
When the MUA did my eyes, she used a liner line about 1/4 inch thick — I might do that for later today, but I felt it would be a lot for daytime. And she shaped my eye differently as you can see from the picture above.
Concealer: MK

Primer: forgot
Foundation: MK mineral, lightest color spritzing brush with Clinique Moisture Surge before applying –[The woman who sells it to me has a deeper complexion than I do. She wears this shade over the lightest of the MK tinted moisturizers. I use this moisturizer as a light liquid makeup, without minerals on top. Today I did not use it. Just sharing her technique.] I think in RL this looks either: dark, dirty, or as if I have a tan.
Hightlight: Benefit High Beam up the center of my face to lighten it a bit
Rouge under powder: Revlon cream
Powder: My sparkly Mix
Highlight all over face: Beauticontrol Pink Powder with micro sparkles
Blush: Chanel Mirage
Concealer on my nose: MAC, buffed out

Lips:
This is more neutral than it photographed. I feel it almost looks gray in RL!
Lip balm: AL
Lip color: AL Smitten
Rimmed with Beaute Allure
Gloss up the center: Lancome Starlight — white with silver micro sparkles
Lined with MAC pencils and also Clarins.
What are you wearing today? What do you think of the foundation on me?

This was yesterday’s FOTD. A friend gave me more Sheer Cover, including another palette of these eye shadows. I remember how much I loved the look earlier, they are a lovely natural look (the palette has both cool and warm shades.) This is the cool. I wanted to try out the new eye shape again to see how it fared with this palette. I’m not used to such natural looks!
Another 5 min makeup. It was quick and easy and summery. It was a little hard to get the eye shape to define because the colors are so natural.
I used MK mascara and for some reason it drifted. That usually doesn’t happen. It seemed smudgy all day.
Base: Beauticontrol pink cream
Liner: MAC white tightlined top and wetlined bottom. Avon Gilded Grapepencil lined under eye — almost a brown. MAC Smolder pencil — blackest black — lined on top.
Brows: Chanel duo powder.
Concealer: YSL Touch Eclat

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: Lancome minerals (and their powder) on dry brush, then spritzed with Clinique Moisture Surge before applying. I like this application.
Blush: BE Vintage Peach + Meow Water Lilies
Highlight: Beauticontrol Pink Powder (with shimmer) + AL Magnolia Blossom

Lips:
base: SCA hyaluronic pen
Guerlain 08 lined with Guerlain Rose Indien pencil

What did you do for makeup? Are you finding you want quick and easy for summer?
I promised myself on Sunday that I wouldn’t do anything on Monday as far as running around, because I’m still recovering (ha!) from the long trip, but I ended up getting my errands done for the week. Whoo hooo!
How about you?

July 19th, 2009 — Anastasia, Bare Escentuals, Beauté, Brows, Chanel, Clinique, Contouring, Eye Shadow, Eye liner, FOTD, Foundation, Lancome, Lip Gloss, Lipstick, Mary Kay, Mascara, Maybelline, Mineral, Rouge or blush, Sheer Cover, Techniques
Another 5 mins makeup, done quickly. It’s kind of fun to limit myself to one shadow color — and it’s easy to do with this new shape. When the MUA did it for me, she basically mixed colors together to get the depth of shade she wanted. I figure I can do that too if a single shade isn’t sufficient.
Eyes:
Base: Mary Kay shadow
Lids in new shape: Lancome Bluebirds Fly
Inner lids: Chanel off-white
Concealer: MK
Lined: Chanel Mercury/Sapphire pencil, sadly discontinued, love this darker blue
Lined lower waterline: MAC white pencil — I like this look sometimes — and I’ve also tightlined the top with white, which is interesting — to do it right on the top, I should use white on the inner and outer edges and dark in the middle, maybe I’ll try that tomorrow, because using white on the entire top shows the white starkly against the color of my eye, but it’s really cool against the white part of my eye
Mascara: Stiletto
Brows: Anastasia pen

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: Lancome minerals followed by Lancome mineral powder
Technique: use small amount of minerals on brush, spritz brush with Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray — apply. I saw this done by someone else, but never tried it myself before today. I didn’t realize how easy it would be to do or how well it would work.
This gives me more of the finish that I like, and in a sense, it is almost like making a liquid mineral foundation on your brush, only it is (maybe) faster than applying in separate steps (liquid, then powder.) Anyway, this is probably the first time I’ve felt that a mineral foundation worked for my skin type.
Nose: MAC concealer on my nose, buffed in/on and using a triangle sponge

Lips:
Guerlain coffret, the deepest crayon color + Gloss top coat, rimmed with Beaute Paramour
Pretty color! The crayon has a sort of copper look to it, not really red or pink as it looked.

I don’t know why my face is in the shadows in the picture. I must have turned away from the light source.
What do you think?
Have you used this technique to apply mineral foundation?
I’m going to try this technique again this week and try using mineral foundation more often. It’s nice to have another method that works.

I’m not sure I look this pale in RL, compared to my pictures today, but you can see how white around my face reflects up making me paler. I do love this shirt, however. It is bright white. May 9th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Concealer, Contouring, Eye Shadow, FOTD, Foundation, Highlighting, L'Oreal, Lipstick, NYX, Primer, Sheer Cover, Yves St Laurent
A weekend look using the L’Oreal minerals that I reviewed yesterday.
I reworked my eyes, I thought, from the day I wore Burnt Roses in the crease to show it is possible to get it softer. See it here. I see that I reversed the colors on the lids, so it’s not exactly the same.
Crease: AL Burnt Roses
Outer corners and drylined under the eyes: Strawberry Despair
Inner Corners: Persephone
Lined upper and lower with Black Cherry gel liner, using the back end of a liner brush.
Concealer: YSL Eclat

Sunscreen: Neutrogena.
Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation, Glow (used up the center of my face), Blush (on cheekbones): all L’Oreal minerals
Rouge: NARS Riviera stick
Powder: my sparkly mix, that’s all; I did not use the Hyaluronic today.
My take:
L’Oreal went on well; I like the colors. A few hours later it drifted into the pores of my nose and I had to fix it by rubbing it off. That is not unusual for me which is why I generally do not put anything on my nose at all. I think it looks better naked than with little light dots on it, LOL!
I used my Lancome mineral foundation brush to apply the foundation with. I just love, love, love that brush!

Lips: NYX Lips B 52, a warm pink brown, darker on than I expected from the tube.
Here’s the picture of the day I didn’t like the crease:

Which one do you prefer?

I still felt like turquoise today.
And I’m still trying out mineral foundations on the weekend. This went on more evenly. I also like the color. It’s nearly a perfect match. It was also easier to apply, whether because of the brand or because I’m beginning to know better how to apply them.

Eyes: All Aromaleigh, unless noted
Crease: Jade, pure eyes frost
Outer corners: Grass, pure hue
Inner Corners: Azure, pure eyes frost
Drylined lower: Lagoon, Carolina Summer Matte
Tight lined upper and lower: Sephora Flashy Blue
Dry lined upper and lower: Girlactik Multi-Jewels — love this!
Brows: Chanel pencil
Mascara: Lancome Hypnose + Tarte on lower

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: AL C1
Highlight: AL Whisper, up the center
Concealer: AL pink cream
Blush: Meow Masterpiece The Scream
Lips: Lancome Groupie rimmed with Beauté Urge
Do you wear AL foundation? AL shadows?
They are really lovely. It’s also very nice that you can buy sample sizes until you know what colors you would like full sizes of.
What do you think of this look on me?
I hope you’ve had a lovely weekend!

April 6th, 2009 — Aromaleigh, Avon, Bare Escentuals, Books, Concealer, Cosmetics, Foundation, Fyrinnae, L'Oreal, Laura Mercier, Mark, Mary Kay, Meow, Mineral, Sheer Cover, illamasqua
Have you noticed
…how nearly all the major department stores brands have added minerals to their lineup?
…and that Mary Kay re-formulated all their eyeshadows, blushes, bronzers and highlighters a short while back to be minerals? And they brought out a mineral foundation?
…and that drug store brands added minerals even earlier?
…and that Avon and Beauticontrol each have minerals now?
And it doesn’t hurt that they are supposed to be good for you.
…there are even products for correction and prevention, not just cosmetic effects.
Is there anyone who hasn’t joined the bandwagon?
…or the craze as has been said.
Who was first with a home run?
…was it Bare Essentuals who changed the face of cosmetics, and did it so well that major brands took notice and wanted a piece of the pie?
…how about all the other lovely lines (in alpha order) of minerals like About Face (I’ve never used them), Aromaleigh, Coastal Scents (never used them yet), Fyrinnae, Joppa (never used them), Meow, Purely Cosmetics (which I haven’t tried) … the list goes on and on and on and… taking their well earned piece of the pie.
…or lines like Lime Crime , so bright it’s a crime, with plenty of glitter, whether mineral or not…
For the fashion conscious
…how about all those glorious shadow and blush colors?
…no major line matches the colors that can be found in the Indie lines I’ve used: Aromaleigh, Fyrinnae, Meow…they just don’t compare…and Hip colors, while hip (and a clever name), are not as hipster…
How about texture? Is this the next frontier?
Do you like the loose texture?
…once you get used to loose (and maybe using ziplocks) it’s a synch and it’s not messy.
Have you tried pressing any of them? I have not.
…Mary Kay’s products are all pressed — lovely colors too, but just not quite so Indie.
How about foundations?
You can find minerals in liquids, creams or powder form. The most popular form is likely the powders.
Purists choose by ingredient additives (or not) and by color and texture. Some lines have a much wider choice in color range — from lightest to darkest — and hue — neutral, pink, yellow based… But with the ability to order samples for a reasonable price, it’s not impossible to find a color and a coverage that is just what you want.
I’m not a good one to ask because I don’t think the liquids or creams are that different from ones without minerals. This is the form of foundation I usually use. To be honest, BE foundations are too dark for me. And I think irritating. And because I don’t like a powder or a heavy look (I prefer sheer or dewy) I haven’t pursued any other lines. I’d be willing to try. I just haven’t. I’m using up the BE, mixed lighter with some AL, on my neck.
Do you use mineral foundations?
What is your favorite and why? What kind of coverage do you like? Are you warm or cool complected? pale? Asian? dark?
Do you use mineral shadows and blushes?
Do you have a favorite line?
Be sure to mention any lines I may have forgotten or don’t know.
One for the money, two for the show
….with the Internet so easy to access, Internet companies are giving the companies with counters or wall space a run for their money.
And well they should.

I’m still not tired of Pink and Grey, so today I thought I’d use some Chanel colors.

Eyes:
Base: Beauticontrol pink; then my sparkly mix
Lid: Chanel Pink pink from Lotus Cactus duo (had gorgeous green too)
Crease: Chanel Starlight applied before outer corners to soften
Outer corners: Chanel Silvery applied second so Starlight would blend it naturally.
Brows: La Prairie pencil

Lined upper: Chanel Malachite from duo pencil, more glam in looks than yesterday’s Clinique.
Lined lower: MAC graphblack in waterline, then earthline outside it
Lined just outside the lower Jane 24 It’s a girl light pink
Lined top and bottom AL evilwoman rocks! glam glitter
Mascara top: Lancome Oscillation Black
Mascara lower: Stiletto Love this long spiky look.

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: Estee Lauder Minute Makeup Buff Discontinued
If I’d thought of it, I would have done Chanel foundation too!
Highlight: Estee Lauder Minute Opal Discontinued also
Concealer: YSL Touch Eclat 1
Color under my sparkly powder mix: I forgot!
Blush over the powder: Meow Masterpiece Water Lilies — I really like this!

Lips: L’Oreal 620 not rimmed yet…
And here I have rimmed my lips using Beau Nelson of Beauté’s technique.

Using Beau Nelson of Beauté’s technique highlighting my lips
L’Oreal 620, rimmed with Lancome Siren, then Bonnie Bell Lipshox Fuchsia Flash I wanted this to be more subtle than with very light gloss.
You can read about this technique here.
Don’t you just love the lips with this technique!
I hope you try it!
How do you like this look?
Have a great day!
