FOTD Lancome makeover

I wanted to try some of the new Lancome products, so I asked a SA to do a makeover on me.

She used the new Lancome minerals in the lightest shade, Natural Ivory 10. She tried the next deepest on one side (she says they get lighter on the face) but she felt it looked too dark, so she used the 10 on the other side. I told her to just put some 10 on the other side, so one side is a bit more made up than the other. I’d prefer it a bit sheerer.

The SA said the foundation doesn’t look good on everyone, but she loved it on me, that it gave me a glow.

Since I don’t normally wear mineral foundation, I think I’d like to go in to see if I can apply it correctly before I buy it. The brush is super scrumptuous! It feels like velvet, just like their claims. I am going to have to get this, at least.

*The Lancôme innovation: skin-renewing White Sapphire Complex* helps fight visible signs of aging. Skin looks brighter, revived and feels softer for hours.
* Experience the velvety brush for a blissful, effortless, controlled application.
*11 luxurious, long-wearing natural shades – free of talc, oil and fragrance
*Aloe, Vitamin E, Mica, Alumina, Bismuth Oxychloride

Blush: I’ll have to ask her. She started off thinking browner, but was glad she chose this. [Update: Sheer Amarose]
Lipstick: Groupie, a gorgeous color. I wanted her to do it by itself, with no pencil. After cataloguing my pencils, I’m simply not going to get another one. (Maybe, LOL!) Lippies will have to stand on their own.

Eyes:
Eyeshadows were a duo, I think Emerald, Green on one side, a sort of sandy taupe on the other. She started thinking apricot and pink, but wasn’t sure. I said try the green — you’re sure??!! Yes, I knew I could wear the green. Loved this color.

After applying a base, she applied the taupy shade up to my brows, then the green. She used a green pencil on the lower lid, then topped it with more of the green shadow.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Mascara: Extreme Black — I don’t own this one, but I’m going to. Talk about lash power! I don’t know how I missed this mascara.

BookGirl said
She loved the lippie; prefers the way I do my eyes.

My take
Very pretty minerals, if they work for you, color and all. Loved, loved, loved the brush!! Loved the lippie and the eyeshadows.

How about you?
Do you own these shadow or lip colors? Do you wear the foundation? How do you like it on me?

A little is enough

Our recent trip, half of which was without our luggage, showed that it is possible to be a minimalist, which those of you who know me, know that I am not.

I do, however, pack light. I traveled to China 3 times with one suitcase — and a second one for my daughters.

I could pack considerably lighter if I wore no makeup and used no moisturizer. (I can hear you laughing!) And if I didn’t need clothes or jackets for cold weather.

It used to be that my carry on had my makeup and hair products, because I felt that I could wear just about anything, if the rest of me looked good. Now, with the regulations about what can be carried on, it is impossible. (I believe I will try to do it next time, however, taking small portions of some of the products that can be repackaged.)

I am very picky about the products I use, as those of you who read my blog know. I’ve found products that work for me, and I prefer to use them.

I know David will understand this, as he was without the moisturizer that works for him. I hope he comments and tells us what it is.

I mean seriously, who gets up in the morning and thinks I will use products that I like the least: I think I will look my second best today!

My firm belief is that anyone can enhance his or her appearance with the right skin products and color — even men!

Here’s what I did: I used the hair products in our cabin, and bought two things to use along with (a shine product and a curl enhancer) (which were more expensive and less effective than what I had in my lost luggage.) Limited to what was available on the boat: I used a sample of moisturizer from Estee Lauder (whereas I usually layer up), borrowed eye makeup remover and a sample of Lancome makeup, and bought a Lancome travel set of eye and face makeup. (By contrast our last cruise on Royal Caribbean offered more upscale indie products and much more perfumes.)

I traveled with my own brushes and samples of Aromaleigh shadows. So at least I had those!

Most days I wore makeup from the night before until after I swam, then I redid for the evening (and next day.) Yiyiyi.

And I had a great time! No one knew what my best is anyway. Ha!

It was more important to make the boat, though I think my luggage is more well traveled than I am and likely has a story to tell!

One of the young women also lost her luggage and received it the same day we did. She looked radiant in her own clothes, fixing her hair the way she is used to, and having her own makeup. She said to me, “Do you see why I was so upset not to have my own things?”

By contrast Book Girl was loaned both beautiful and functional clothes. She looked fab the whole time.

I was able to make do with the clothes on my back and a couple of T’s from Delta and the cruise. I had a couple of necklaces and a scarf. I wore a denim skirt — and thankfully I had worn tennis shoes, not the sandals I had packed, so my feet weren’t cold in Antarctica.

I threatened to wear a toga, as I had in college! But I didn’t. It might have been fun!

On cold days, I layered blankets under my skirt — and wrapped a heavy plaid blanket over me to go out on deck.

And I had a blast.

I think I will try to pack even lighter next trip. Take half out again. I am tired of schlepping luggage! The hardest thing was my hair, but it is possible to do with a whole lot less than what we are used to.

You can see an iceberg behind me.

What I think:
Having my own moisturizers is a definite plus. My skin looks better each day. Someone asked me after I got home if I was rested, because I looked so good. Ha! we lost more sleep than I care to count — and got up early and hit the road running. But I was happy, and it shows.

My hair definitely did better with my own products, and I wouldn’t want to go much longer than I did (a week.) But it was still in good condition.

Now that I’m a bit more rested, I’d even consider another trip — in the future!

FOTD NYX glitter pallet eyes

NYX Glitter Pallet is available in a number of colors online from Cherry Culture or in store at Ulta. This is from the Paradise pallet.

I got my hair cut today, and it surely needed it! Everywhere I went, someone mentioned how well they liked my eye makeup. The pink glitter is very becoming.

Photobucket

Eyes:
Base: Dior
pink toned cream shadow
Crease: NYX Glitter Pallet Pink — bright bubble gum color with multi light pastel glitter
Outer Corner: NYX GP Dark Black with Multi Glitter
Lined top in waterline: Mary Kay black eye pencil
Lined bottom in waterline with MAC graphblack, just outside with earthline
Drylined bottom outside MAC: Ulta Jade mineral powder looks green, pulls gold from the glitter
Mascara:
Top: Lancome Cils primer, Oscillation over it;
Bottom: Definicils
Blush: MAC Dollymix
Brows: Merle Norman powder

Highlight: my own shimmer powder mix, no time for anything else, topped with a bit on BE on my nose

Lips:
Revlon Wine with everything
cream gloss
This is a very pretty color. I thought I might want to add silver glitter, but it has a gleam all its own. This is the formula I liked so well.

Again, I used DuWop Reverse Liner just to make sure it wouldn’t migrate, but I don’t know that I needed to. It’s still going strong a couple of hours later.

Photobucket

Verdict:
I raced through trying this product for the first time in order to be on time for my hair cut. You can see how it went on uneven. The pallet has great colors and I will definitely try it again. It comes with 1 applicator with sponges on each end and 1 applicator that has a sponge on one end and a brush on the other. I don’t see how you could use the brush. The product is suspended in a heavy gel. It’s not particularly waxy, but it means the glitter stays put.

I used my finger to apply it because nothing else worked.

One reviewer talked about using this as liner and having to go over it several times to get it even, but that it lasted all night. I have other glitter liners that are a lot easier to use. I don’t know that I would try this as liner. Maybe! She talked about using it on her face, arms, decolletage, etc.

Photobucket

I need to play with it some more, but meantime I look good enough to race around town anyway!

What do you think?

FOTD Lancome Meow Benefit MAC

I had a long, full day today. These pictures were taken about 10 mins ago, so everything held up really well. I’d say I didn’t do anything but add a lippie, but I did try some MAC colors.

Eyes are the same as yesterday. Meow colors. Mascara is Lancome Oscillation. Used Sephora green pencil to line.

I started this morning with MAC Hello Kitty Popster tinted lip conditioner, rimmed with Beauté Paramour, but I didn’t get a picture. It was really pretty together. I might do it again starting out tomorrow so you can see it.

Photobucket

Primer
Foundation: Lancome minerals + Lancome mineral translucent powder + my sparkly mix
Blush: Beauté liqui-gel Harlot
Later: MAC mineralize blush Moon River
Concealer: Dior skinflash

Photobucket

Tonight I changed the lippie to Benefit frenched. It’s a very pretty red, bluer than the picture looks. Next time I’d do the lipstick on one lip and lipgloss on the other and smoosh it. Even though it’s almost shocking, it would be great with a red shirt.

What did you wear today?

FOTD Review: E.L.F. cosmetics

This is a little more of a made up look than I’ve been wearing lately, but it is really the same amount of product. I could tweak it with a little glitter on my lips, but wanted to show it as-is.

I wanted to try a few E.L.F. products because they are so inexpensive.

Mineral Shadows
The mineral shadows come in the same jar as BE and are about the same size. They compare favorably with BE. They are not as sparkly as AL or Meow, at least the colors I chose. The minerals were the most expensive of any of the products I ordered — $3 each for full size.

Lip liner pencils
The pencils are called Feather-Proof Moisturizing Lip Liner. It has not migrated. For $1, it is worth trying. They have a pretty good mix of colors, most of them are fairly neutral with nuances of color. Spice is not at all orange, but more of a true neutral. I like it, even though it wasn’t what I ordered.

Waterproof pen liner:
This worked well yesterday. The felt tip is sharper (in feel) and dryer than the Mary Kay one that I loved that is discontinued. I forgot to try the black today. I used Midnight yesterday and it did well. Again, $1.

Photobucket

Eyes: All dry except where noted
Base: Trish McEvoy, then my beige sparkly mix
Crease: E.L.F. Caffeinated mineral
Outer corners: E.L.F. Glamorous mineral
Inner Corner: Meow because photo made it look matte, which it doesn’t in RL — don’t know why the camera does this — and of course, in RL you don’t go around with one eye closed; it is a flash of color when you blink.

Photobucket

Drylined E.L.F. Royal mineral, top and lower outside pencil line, then wetlined on top, very pretty wetlined
Pencil lined, top and bottom (no MAC, LOL) E.L.F. Plum brightening eye liner
Mascara: top BE Buxom; lower Lancome Definicils
Brows: Victoria Jackson pencil

Face:
Comparing Lancome foundation on one side and Chanel on the other
Revlon Primer
E.L.F. Persimmon Shimmering Facial Whip glimmer up middle of face (this would be good to give your face color in winter or whenever you needed a pick-me-up, placing it differently on your face)
E.L.F. Spice Lined lips and filled in (they sent me this by mistake, not the one I ordered, but I thought I’d try it anyway)
E.L.F. Blossom Hypershine Lip Gloss
E.L.F. Bitter Went over lip line and inside with
E.L.F. Pink Lemonade All Over Color Stick (such a cute little size, almost a sample)

And my glimmer powder mix.

Shimmering Facial Whip: this is a nice product and comes in several shades. The browner ones would be good for getting a tanned look without being in the sun. I might try one of those next. This has an Allure Choice Award.

Multipurpose, on-the-go whipped colorant is vitamin B, C and E packed to instantly brighten and sooth skin with no greasy after-feel.

Squeeze a pearl-sized [more like a dot] amount onto finger and blend into cheeks, eyes, or lips.

Hypershine Gloss
This was not as visible as some glosses I own. It has some taste, but it was not at all objectionable. I punched it up with more lip liner. I intentionally chose a neutral, as well as to the color range I don’t usually buy. If you can’t do that for $1, when can you?

Hyper, glass-like shine infused with micro-mirror technology to reflect light. Smooths lips on contact with a conditioning shine that lasts for hours. Create that natural lip stain of color that’s sheer, subtle and beautiful!

Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara
Book Girl has gorgeous thick lashes that almost brush her sunglasses. Any colored mascara looks mascara-y. I thought this might give her some definition, but still look natural. She tried it yesterday, and it worked well.

Achieve glossy, shiny, healthy-looking lashes and brows with the infused long wearing conditioning agents in our wet gloss lash & brow mascara. Looking pulled together has never been easier!

Today she is using the AL clear mascara. She says this went on with more product on the first application. Both feel equally light.

All over color stick This would be good for airplane travel.
This worked well. It’s quite a darling little size. I wouldn’t mind an array of colors. I would think this would work better for dry skin than for oily.

Duo Eye Shadow Cream
This is the only product I bought that I haven’t tried yet. I thought I might try it as a dark base under minerals.

My opinion, you can’t go wrong for the price.

The actual packaging, not of the product, but of the containers is not as rich as NYX. NYX has more of the look of MAC.

These are not as high-glam or as Indie in appearance when on as AL or Meow, but some items, like the lip pencils, are more than favorable for drugstore lines, especially for price.

I think my girls would enjoy having some of this. It would make good stocking stuffers. Or even birthday favors.

Lipstick: NYX Love Angel, from the amazingly cheap haul —
My take: this was a very pretty color and not one I would have bought if it weren’t in the package. So getting the package gives new colors to try. I simply reapplied this one throughout the day. If you notice, it seems to separate at the lines, but smooshing it smooths it down again. I’m not sure why it does that. It has a slight taste and smell that is not objectionable.

Photobucket

I thought this was a soft, pretty look. It’s not a look I wear very often, but it bears repeating. It was quite nice.

FOTD AL lips and eyes

It’s been a while since I’ve done a FOTD, just lazy I guess! This is one of my favorite color combinations. I keep the two shades together so I don’t forget how nicely they go together. But I had forgotten how I had worn them the last time, because it had been a while. So today was just how it felt at the time.

Eyes: the usual mascara and brow
BE Primer, then Queen Phyllis for a smooth surface
Outer corners: AL lulu lustre
Inner corners and drylined lower: AL tanaquil lustre
Lined top and lower: Tidal Wavegel liner
Tightlined top and lower: MAC shade fluidline

Photobucket

Face:
Maybelline Matte Mousse # 1
— I usually use # 3. In RL this does not look this light — it looks too light when photographed. I used # 3 to contour my lower cheeks.
Highlight up the center: Revlon (new) (pink)
Chanel stick rouge
My sparkly mix of powder
Lancome Petticoat Pink
Cream Blush

Photobucket

Lips: AL Pout with a bit of sparkle in the center
Just a simple lip, but such a pretty color, neutral, but with a touch of pink.

Serums that work — or not

Here are some thoughts on various types of serums and the links to posts where I have written more specifically. Some of the serums are pricing their way out of my price point. There are actually some that are over $1000 being marketed in Japan. I suspect some are worth it; others are not.

Whenever possible, let a beauty advisor put some on your skin. See if it is possible to get a small amount to try at home before you commit to a big purchase.

This is only a partial list, as I have thought of them. I will continue to update, as I think of it.

Body Serum
Arbonne has a wonderful body serum and body lotion. You can find my review at the above link.

Facial Serums
There are also serums targeted for eyes.
Anti-Wrinkle
La Prairie CELLULAR Retexturizing Booster
This just might be a miracle product. Whenever I apply it, I see immediate results. I generally use it for several days at a time, then I give it a rest and use it again when I see the need. It is expensive, but it really works. I think it works better than Renova. Price: $185.00 | 30 ml / 1.0 oz. (Unfortunately, it’s possible this is no longer available. I have not tried any of the comparible LP serums to see if a newer one is as good.)

Serums with Vitamin C
Many companies have C-serums because they work. I have used C products for years. Mary Kay is one of the companies that has just added a C formula. If you can’t beat them, join them. The important thing is to find a C serum that works for you, then use it.

Here’s a partial list of companies that have C-serums: Awake, MK, Aromaleigh (generic), Lancome, Estee Lauder, Prescriptives, Avon, Lumene. Choose the link above to see my thoughts on each.

Arbonne has a number of excellent serums, including lifting, RE9 (with C), and Revelage (whitening) I won’t be without the lifting or the whitening.

Avon has been a leader in skin care, very innovative. They were the first line to come out with an alpha-hydroxy — and it made a big difference in my skin. Their anew products are excellent. I do not care for either of their pump serums that they had a couple of years ago, because they smelled so bad. I recommend smelling them before buying to see if they still smell. I didn’t notice a huge difference like I did with their alpha-hydroxy products. Some of their products are targeted by age.

Beauticontrol
Beauticontrol makes several serums that I like. Some are targeted for 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s skin. I’ve liked Regeneration Gold for years. It’s a two step process that mixes when you pump it. It used to be that one was red, the other white. Now one is green, the other white. I do not know if it is the same product. Regeneration Platinum Plus is supposed to be the next step up, but it rolls on my skin, so I use it only on my neck and chest and bought more of the Regeneration Gold. They make C products, but I’ve not tried them as I have others that I am using at the moment.

Chanel Serums
Chanel makes a number of serums, and they are all excellent. It depends on your price point and your skin concerns. Sublimage products kept me moist even in the dryness of Las Vegas, using no other moisturizers layered in. The Radiance line has an excellent hydrating serum. As an aside, I did not care for Sublimage eye cream.

Clarins
I have used Super Restorative Serum. I likely might buy it again. I like what it says it does; I’m not sure I saw it doing it. I tended to use it more for hydrating than anything else. When I opened the container, when it seemed empty, there were still several days worth of product left. I put it in a small jar and used it to the last drop.

On the whole I like Clarins products, so I suspect their other serums would be good too. Their beauty advisers are generally knowledgeable and happy to help you. They are good about giving small samples to try.

Cle de Peau serums
Cle de Peau is the high end Shiseido line. CdP makes a number of serums, and they all feel good. I’m not sure how to choose one over the other. I have one. I’m not convinced it does anything particularly, but that might be because I tend to use others that I have.

Dior Serums
Dior makes some excellent serums. Capture Totale and HydrAction are two that I have tried. Capture Totale came highly recommended by a woman in NYC who swears by it.

Guerlain serums
Orchidee Imperiale is their highest, newest line. It is excellent. Super Aqua-Serum came highly recommended on the strength of one older woman who works for Guerlain whose skin is exceptionally beautiful. It’s a toss up which is better. Take your pick. They also have Success Future and Substantific serums. I get my Guerlain from Claire at the Palazzo in Las Vegas. Call 702) 732-7008 or email GuerlainPalazzo.STORE@lvmhuspc.com

Hydrating serums
La Prairie CELLULAR HYDRATING SERUM is an excellent hydrator, one of the very best. It is lightweight. It works by binding moisture to the skin and restoring the skin’s natural moisture barrier. A little goes a long ways and it stays fresh in the bottle. I use it generally on very cold days or whenever my face feels like it needs more moisture from the inside out. Price: $185.00

La Prairie Serums
Like Chanel, these are excellent, and it depends on your price point. I have not tried the latest lines.

Shiseido serums
Shiseido has a number of serums that are all excellent. Again, it depends on your price point and what you are hoping to accomplish.

Signature Club A
Super Strength High Potent-C Anti-Wrinkle Capsules $29.50
I like this a lot. It’s in my rotation of C products.

Retinol Wrinkle Penetrating Capsules 12 Hour Release
$32.50
This is in my rotation. I like it a lot.

Viviane Woodard
I’ve used these products since I was 18. They have a number of serums, including specialized ones to use at night. Their day time serums are very good and moderately priced. The evening ones really give your skin a boost. They are used only periodically. Unlike ones by La Prairie that are also used only occasionally, these will not break the bank. Likely they perform different functions, but they help the skin.

Whitening serums
Many companies offer whitening serums. They started first in Asian countries. It’s not surprising that Shiseido has one. If you want to break up an age spot the fastest possible way, then your best bet is laser. Be sure to use SPF every day along with these.
Arbonne Revelage is an excellent whitener, which works by breaking up dark spots from below and keeping them from forming from the top.

Mary Kay TimeWise® Even Complexion Essence
I consider this more of a preventative, than a curative. I want to see faster results. I have no patience.

What serums do you know, use and love?
As I think of more, I will update.

FOTD Lancome + NYX + MAC

This is the first time I’ve used the NXY shadows that came in my amazingly cheap haul.

NYX TS29, White, Tropical, Silver (this looks like a soft blue)
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Mascara: BE Buxom on top; took picture before I put any on the lower lashes
Lined lower: MAC Light as Air + Mac earthline below that

PhotobucketPhotobucket

I don’t know which came first, the shirt or the eye colors. The shirt is one of my many Ts from Target. This one is so soft with 3/4 sleeves. I knew I could wear the color, so I assumed I could wear the color on my eyes. The funny thing is that without having tried Aromaleigh’s reds on my eyes, I don’t know that I would have tried an orange — apricot, yes; orange, no.

Photobucket

Primer: Smashbox
Foundation: Lancome minerals + Lancome mineral translucent powder + my sparkly mix
Blush: MAC Moon River mineralize blush
Blush Later: MAC what was left on my fingers from the Popster lip conditioner
Highlight: AL Magnolia , up the center of my face — this is the perfect shade for me; I can use the others, but one is light and I have to be careful not to use too much; this one is a 5 second application, with no errors.
Concealer: Dior skinflash
Lips: MAC Hello Kitty Popster tinted lip conditioner, rimmed with Beauté Paramour

I was really happy with the way this turned out.

How about you?
Have you tried any of the NYX shadows?

My take:
I’d give this shadow set a 5. They were easy to use, very nice packaging, with a super mirror which was unexpected.

Review: Spinlash Mascara

Is Spinlash a gimmick? or a gimmick that has found its time? It’s interesting that so many oscillating, spinning, and vibrating mascaras have come out at about the same time. Perhaps an inventor made a presentation to a major company — and was turned down, similar to the story of the variating wiper blades for cars — and then the idea folks at the major companies brought out their own spin, pun intended.

Ah well, we consumers reap the benefits.

I had not heard of Spinlash mascara — I’d missed all the TV ads — until my 13 yo came home and told me that one of her good friends had it. Did she like it? yes. Did it work? yes. And she wanted one…and wanted one… She’s new to mascara and doesn’t like it to look like she has it on, particularly, and definitely doesn’t want any heavier places or clumps.

So, when I found one, I bought it to give it a try.

Here’s what it looked like on me today. And this is the first time I’ve used it on the bottom lashes.

Photobucket

On the whole, the mascara is great. The wand is bigger than most and a tad heavier. There are dual buttons that work nicely to spin the brush in opposite directions depending on whether you are doing upper or lower lashes.

It goes on smoothly. I don’t like to do multiple coats, so it took a couple of day’s applications to figure out how hard to press the brush into my lashes to get the amount of mascara that I wanted.

It worked easier on the bottom lashes today than I had expected.

Unlike Lancome’s Oscillation mascara, this brush doesn’t have any particular sensation when you use it. LO can be addictive simply for the little fairy finger massage your lashes get. And sometimes do-it-yourself massage pampering is a very good thing.

Try it, you’ll like it.

Karin
5 for how the mascara lasts and doesn’t flake or smudge
5 for ease of application once you get the hang of it
3 for size of the wand, it’s a bit bulky
1 that you can’t change out the battery
4 for price $14.95, less than Lancome, more than Stiletto

Voluminous lips a la Beauté Cosmetics

I wanted to repost this technique for those who are not familiar with it or who have joined my blog more recently. The technique for voluminous lips really does work, no matter your age. I have an easy way to find this from my front page, but sometimes it is easier just to see it as a post. It is well worth the few seconds it takes to update your lips.

>>>>>>>>>>>>

Beauté Cosmetics has a short line right now — lip gloss, lip and cheek stain, and brushes — and some lovely gift sets.

At the site, there are five different videos from the creative director Beau Nelson, including one on Voluminous Lips.

Dontcha just love the concept of voluminous lips!

How they work
He tells us in the video that Beauté glosses have three different volumizers:

…dehydrating Marine Filling Spheres which act like tiny sponges that go inside the lip, then expand with the body’s own natural water — that gives you instant plumping; maxi-lip is a tripeptide that stimulates collagen cell renewal — after 29 days you get semi-permanent volume that is a long term benefit; then we have orchid extract that regulates the natural moisturizing factor of the lips.

They are excellent glosses!
I bought several of them and I was given one for review, and depending on what color lippie I am using, I vary the Beauté gloss color that I rim with.

These will plump and give the illusion of plumping without damaging
If you remember from reading my blog, I damaged my lips by daily using a plumping lipstick that stings. I asked KarlaSugar before I purchased if these sting, and she said they did not. I agree! You can see her reviews and swatches at her wonderful blog.

I know that Orchid Extract(s) are a big part of Guerlain’s treatment line, so they do work.

Lip Technique
In the video, Beau shows a lip technique for giving instant volume and glam to your lips. I wanted to try it today, but initially forgot, so then I had to rethink it, how to do it with lip glosses I had on hand — and the one I had already applied.

What I liked about his technique
It is very simple, and it is subtle, suitable for every day wearing. But it really makes a difference.

What is it?
He uses two of his colors: Allure and Paramour in this technique.
Both of them are glittery, with some light reflecting.

I think you could use any two of his glosses — or others you have on hand — that work with your skin tone.

First
He begins by taking the lighter of two Beauté glosses and outlines the lips on the outside edge of the lip line.

Remember that by extending the lip line a tad, you are extending the optical illusion of your lip line. By using a gloss, not a pencil, it is subtle — and you won’t be left with a hard line if you eat off the center of the color. I think it is also a more modern look, and less made-up looking. Additionally, it does a better job of camouflaging tiny lines around your lips than a colored lip pencil does. You can still use a clear lip pencil farther out, if you wish.

You want to look like you only better. You don’t want to look like the first thing someone notices is your makeup technique.

Next
He fills in the lip line up to the edge of the first color (not over it) with the deeper gloss.

My lips today
I had already applied the gloss I wanted to swatch, before I remembered I was going to try this technique. Oops. So I applied his technique in reverse.

I had initially planned to use Too Faced — which I did later today. See pix here.

NYX Pink Sparkle Diamond Sparkle Gloss
I had this on my lips already — and couldn’t decide what direction to go for my FOTD. That was a challenge!

To Rim: I wanted something that would show.
Lancome Starlight, clear white glittery gloss
Rimmed — after the fact! You can see that reversing the application works too.

I used a lip brush to get the tiniest line.

You can see it is very subtle, yet noticeable. I love it!

Using a glitter pencil to rim
I have tried this in the past, using a Tina and Tony pink sparkle pencil to highlight the entire upper lip or just the middle, but it wasn’t as effective, was harder to use, and I only did it on occasion.

This technique with gloss is much better and easier.

Using the look with darker lippies
I used a very light glitter gloss here to rim because my skin is so pale and because I was using a light lipstick. If I were using a red, I’d likely use a red sparkle for the rim. Or if magenta, then magenta gloss to rim, etc. I’d have to experiment to see if I preferred a matching gloss to a lighter one that more nearly matches my skin tone. Aromaleigh Rocks! Glam Glitters would work well for the rim, if I didn’t have a gloss that would work.

Update: I do use a color close to the color of the main color of my lip color for dark or bright colors. I use a lighter shade if my lip color is more soft or neutral. And in general, I do the outer rimming after I apply the lip color. It seems easier to me. So I do the reverse of how Beau shows.

Tailoring it for darker skins
If you have darker skin, rim your lips with a gloss color lighter or brighter or more glittery than the gloss or lip color you are using, and semi-close to your own skin tone, that way it will be subtle but still daring. Or blend it in a little. For instance, if you are using a clear or sparkly red gloss for your lip, use a deeper sparkly red or deep pink for the rim. Don’t use as light a color as I did unless, of course, you are using a very light lip color.

Or, alternatively, try it with a glitter (either gold or silver glitters depending on your skin tone or the lip color you are using) pencil in grey or black or brown, just on the edge. Or use one of Aromaleigh’s Rocks! glam glitters. Either a matching color or one of the interesting blacks. They would work really well and easily.

My view
Wow, I love this technique! I will likely use it every day.

What do you think? Will you try it?
It is quick and simple — and effective. See my review of these NYX glosses here. Doing a quick comparison of the lips there, this LOTD technique really makes a difference!

If you want to read a detailed interview with Beau about himself and his Beauté line, go here.

The formula is wonderful! Considering that one person swatched her entire line at karlasugar, it’s gotta be good. You won’t be sorry if you try one or three!
