February 14th, 2010 — Avon, Brows, Chanel, Clinique, Cosmetics, La Prairie, Mary Kay, Merle Norman, Prescriptives, Review, Revlon, Swatch
Finding a color that works for blonds that isn’t too dark or too yellow, is a trick.
Here are some favorites of mine that were collected over time:

Top to bottom:
Powder: Merle Norman — Perfect shades when mixed and matched together;
Pencils: Chanel, Clinique, La Prairie, Prescriptives (love the tiny diameter and the tiny brush, also that it feeds up and doesn’t need to be sharpened — comes in only two colors), Mary Kay, Tova, Avon, Revlon (this tends to be darker) (packaging has changed now, but has gel at one end.)
Swatches:
Generally, brow pencils are harder. They draw well on the brow, not so well without a brow bone behind them. La Prairie is not pictured, it wouldn’t draw and just made my skin red, sorry about that! Then the red showed through some of the other colors, so look at the bottom.

Left to right: Powder:
Merle Norman lighter color (barely visible on skin, but shows up well on brow), then deeper color; Pencils: Chanel, Clinique, Mary Kay, Tova, Avon, Prescriptives, Revlon first without gel, then with gel.
Do you have any other colors or brands that you particularly like?

December 2nd, 2009 — Chanel, Clinique, Lip Gloss, Mark, NYX, Review, Rimmel, Swatch
Oh, yummy, is all I can say. You can’t go wrong for $4.
When I made my recent trek to an Ulta, I bought two colors (they had very little selection and do not sell NYX through their website, darn!). (On my second visit they had a good selection, but only 1 or 2 of each color.) You can find them at cherryculture. The online color selection looks like there is a great range. Another color I’d like to try is Copper Sparkle…Ginger Sparkle…Orange Sparkle (why not!) …Rose Sparkle …I can’t choose just one. Now if only the Ulta was nearer to me, I’d check it out again. Why pick the same o same o, when it is reasonable to try something totally different. I might love it!
I took these first two pictures down. Next time I wear them, I will update the photos.
Fuchsia
Just what you’d think — gorgeous!
Paprika
This photographed to the pink side, but it is really more apricot.
Wow, these are great colors. In the wand, they look metallic, similar to some of the Mark metallic glosses (which I can’t find online any more.) They cover well, but are not quite as opaque or metallic as the Mark’s are. They are definitely a gloss and not a liquid lipstick. They feel so much better than the Rimmel I talked about the other day. They feel great and moisturize well. Two hours later, it is still holding up well, not migrating, and — did I say — feeling great.
Have you tried these? what colors have you tried? Do you love them as I do?
Here’s Pink Sparkle
Light, bright almost orchid shade. I’ve rimmed it with a Lancome Starlight. See the technique here.

Here’s Copper Sparkle:
It looks like a beautiful rose copper in the tube. Rimmed with Clinique Whisper, also dotted in the middle.

Orange Sparkle:

You know, when these are so good, you don’t need to spend the money on a Chanel. For the price of one Chanel, you could have several of these. Go for it!
Karin
5 for color
5 for staying power, do not migrate
5 for formula, metallic with a bit of sparkle shimmer, but not frosted
5 for no taste or smell, but no ingredient taste/smell either
5 for the feel, simply yummy
I’ll say it again, my lips feel great!

November 18th, 2009 — Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Clinique, Creating a new lippie, FOTD, Greens, Highlighting, Lip Gloss, MAC, Purples, Rouge or blush
Still working through the samples I bought.
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost + BE Queen Phyllis
Outer Corners: Jewel l’orchidee (purple)
Inner Corners: Wild Coco (golden avocado green, not bright)
Drylined bottom with a mix of both of these colors — the little shimmers on top of the ziplock, not caught inside — don’t want to waste a single shimmer!
Wetlined lower and tightlined upper: Clinique Blacker Violet Never again — it doesn’t really show up, but it also burned in my one eye water line — had to basically remove it.
Tightlighted both top and lower: Clinique Starry Plum — This showed up a bit more. Did not put it in the waterline. MAC is better for the waterline.

Jewel: Cool purple with shimmers of coral gold contrasting the purply goodness.
Blush: Arbonne Promise
Highlight up the center of face: Arbonne Bashful

Lips: MAC Baby Sparks + Smile Dazzleglass, one on each lip and smooshed
Wow! so pretty — I’d seen this on a MUA, so I bought both colors. My camera picked up the micro glitter pretty well.

What do you think?
So far I have loved every color I’ve tried, even the ones I didn’t think I could or would wear (such as this Wild Coco.) I just love the amount of sparkle in each color — loads and loads of tiny micro shimmers.

September 4th, 2009 — Avon, Clinique, Creating a new lippie, LOTD, Lip Balm, Lip pencil, Lipstick, MAC, Techniques
I have way too many lipsticks and lipstick samples to ever use them up in a lifetime, even though I have three daughters and others with whom I share lipsticks. Why! I try as much as possible to buy department store products always with a gwp, and generally that includes a lippie or two, and often I’d buy a lippie as part of my qualifying purchase. So given a number of lipsticks and a number of pencils, it is possible to come up with almost an unlimited number of colors.

How or why did I come up with this one?
Applied in this order
I wanted to try or re-try the Avon sample I had. It is a fuchsia, but when I started to apply it, I could tell it wasn’t vibrant enough. It is more of a spring color than a winter.
Then, my new gwp Clinique lippie, more of a plummed brown pink, was next to it on the counter. I looked at it and thought, this might work.
I didn’t feel like the edges were strong enough, so I did the edges with the MAC pencil. I too almost prefer to do my pencils this way as I have some control over how much pencil shows or shows through vs. doing the pencil first. Plus I can get the edge sharper without looking made up. See my earlier post on Andrea Claire.
How long does it take?
It’s a really fast technique. The longest time is just to determine the colors.
Colors
Balm: AL – this was left from earlier today, but I like the balm as a base
Lipstick
Top: Avon Royal Fuchsia
Lower: Clinique Rose Aglow smooshed
Lined edges: MAC Soar pencil
Here’s how it looks full face:

One thing you can say about me, among many others, is that I’m an equal opportunity buyer. When it comes to cosmetics, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive for it to be the right color. I first look for color, then I look for the finish it gives. Or, I look first for the finish, then to see if there is a color that is right for me.
Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of expensive lines’ colors, but that is not all I have. I never throw anything away because it is extremely rare for anything to get old. I pass it on or continue to use it.
One place I don’t hedge is skin care, but even there the most expensive is not necessarily the one that works the best. If it works, I have likely tried it or am still using it. But realistically, there are so many skin care items and so little time. Laughing here. And I’d venture to say that if I lived elsewhere there’d be a whole realm of other products available to me that are not available in the US. So we do the best we can.
NYX, Aromaleigh, Meow are all lines that are reasonably priced, especially if you start with samples, as you can with the latter two. In the meantime, I bought a couple of NYX things that I’ve never used yet, and I wanted to give them a go.
The NYX colors I used today are individual square shadows with a clear lid.
Eyes:
Base: Nude frost on lids, not under brows, then BE Queen Phyllis
Lids: NYX October Sky (pale blue, almost matte)
Drylined top and bottom: Ocean (blue-green, more green) then over the whole lid a bit
Mascara: Guerlain Le2
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Inner corners: MAC Fascinating pencil (white)
Concealer: the one in the Revlon foundation palette

Primer: Smashbox
Foundation: Revlon age defying cream
Rouge under my sparkly mix powder: Revlon
Blush over: Maybelline Dream Mousse 25
Lips: Avon, MAC and Clinique, see LOTD for details

What do you think?
Isn’t this is pretty color combination! I love it. As you can see, I used a variety of brands and many, but not all, are inexpensive.
How about you?
Do you lean to cosmetics across the board or do you use all price ranges?
My fragrance:

Powder: Guerlain meteorites, then Lancome pwder fdn on my nose, then my sparkly mix over all because it looked too matte

Lip: Clinique Goodness Grapecious Vitamin C lip smoothie + Gleam gloss + Silver sparkly gloss mixed with blush shine Mixed a bit with my finger, then whatever was on my finger put on my cheeks.

I’m not sure why it looks like there is a line with no color in it. That doesn’t show in RL.

What do you think?
When I work with colors this dark, I need to be very careful as I’m more fair than I look. That is one reason why I never use a darker eyeshadow base to intensify colors. The colors are intense enough already on me. I like the look a lot. Tomorrow I will start with a softer sparkly base before I begin. Stay tuned!

I’ve spent the better part of most days since the kids are back in school re-doing the house, organizing and changing — all things impossible to do when everyone is under foot. Consequently, I’m behind in my blog but caught up in my life! I’m going to try to catch up with some of the pictures I’ve taken. This is today’s look.
Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost
Lids: AL Luster pure eyes frost — gorgeous color!
Dry lined top and lower: AL lisianthus satin petals frost
I started out thinking something completely different, until I saw these two samples side by side and thought I’d like to try them. Wow! how pretty they are! And I can wear this shade of coppery brown — I still look alive, LOL!
Tight lined top and lower: ELF Plum pencil
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Mascara: Lancome Fatale

Primer: Vital Radiance Cool (a sort of peachy pink shade)
Foundation: 02 Linen Clinique Super Moisture Makeup a tad too dark, but nice — I’ve finally used up all the Chanel that is still a fave because it was a perfect color and formula, but no longer made.
Rouge under powder: Chanel stick
Powder: Guerlain meteorites I’m going to use this up next. I had put it in a crystal goblet as they did in the store, but I took so long to use it up — are you surprised? — that I could hardly get any powder on my brush, so I ground it up in my Cuisinart, truly!, to make it useable. I think I also needed a pestle in order to get it really fine because there are some bigger bits. The over all color is a medium pink. Before the little beads of powder were ground there were beads of gold, pink, cream…
Blush: Arbonne Promise
Highlight: Arbonne the lightest shade of blush, bought intentionally for this purpose

Lips: Chanel Soft Mink + NYX Pink Frost gloss
Soft Mink is a gorgeous color, an interesting brown, and one I’ve loved ever since it was featured in Allure many moons ago. The bad thing is that it changes taste and texture way too soon for me to use it more than a few times. I’ve had to replace it at least 3 times. Bloomies is the only place that has had it lately.
Today I wanted to use it but not have it dominate — that’s for fall. It’s still too hot here to be considered fall.

What do you think?
I was happy with the way this turned out. It’s the first day in a few days that I’ve done my entire makeup. I was too busy with other things. But really, I love my look with makeup vs. without.

I wore these shadow colors yesterday, because I was wearing a wonderful lime green skirt with amethyst accents. I liked it so well, I wanted to wear the colors again, and since I didn’t take pictures yesterday, I thought I’d show you the idea today. It’s wonderful the number of looks and combinations you can get from several colors of shadows.
Eyes: Arbonne shadows
Base: Nude Frost
Lids: Lime in new shape
Inner corners: light pink (ballet)
Lined top and lower: Clarins Midnight Flash pencil
Drylined top and lower: Arbonne medium amethyst color
Mascara top: Arbonne, 2 in 1; Tarte lower
Brows: La Prairie pencil
Concealer: YSL eclat
Nose: MAC concealer

Primer: Guerlain meteorites
Foundation: Clinique Even Better in Fair — this is a tad dark on me, but when finished it looks fine — I like the formula a lot.
Rouge: Chanel stick under my sparkly mix powder
Blush over powder: Arbonne Promise
Highlight: Arbonne very light pink
Bronzer: Guerlain meteorites powder #3 (this is not a bronzer but it works as a bronzer on me)

Lips:
First, Fyrinnae Visual Kei alone, then this picture was taken after some of it was gone — over the top I put SCA Hyaluronic — it was pretty together!

I was matching my top, which is a serendipitous match to a wonderful wrap skirt/dress from Las Vegas. They sell these wraps in several places, including inside and outside the mall and by the Venetian food court, but I hadn’t bought one until this past trip. It looks best on me as a skirt. My girls wear theirs as dresses too. All you are limited by is your imagination and the colors of the patterns they have. Included in the price is a DVD with styles and a sheet detailing how to wrap.

Take 2
Later during Book Girl’s Arbonne party I layered up the Audrey Eye Look over the top of this one. I never thought to take a picture of me. I was too busy taking every one else’s picture!

I was really pleased with how this turned out. Days like this I think I should keep a color log of really, really good combos. I feel the same way when I get a good comment here. I go back and take a second look to remember what I did.

July 23rd, 2009 — Arbonne, Aromaleigh, Bare Escentuals, Clinique, Dior, DuWop, Lancome, MAC, Mary Kay, Mineral, NYX, Primer, Techniques
Partway through my makeup:
I took this picture to show subtle differences in lips/eyes/face.

Here it is finished:
Blush, highlight, white liner and completed lips added.

Eyes:
Base: MAC Luna — shimmery white
Lids: Arbonne Cosmic, teal green, in new shape
Inner corners: Arbonne Ballet very pale pink
Mascara: Lancome Fatale
Brows: MK cream quad brow palette, discontinued, still I like the colors and formula
Wetlined top and lower: Left eye: Sephora white pencil; right eye: MAC white pencil — Sephora matches the white of my eyes. I used to do this years ago, but got out of the habit — or into another one. I still have my original white pencil around here somewhere.
Sparkle lined: Urban Decay Air Guitar
Concealer: Dior skinflash

Primer: AL
If I’m going to use minerals for foundation, I try to use a primer from a mineral company. I figure it is more compatible, true or not — especially since I’m experimenting to get the look I like.
Foundation: AL 1 CL, which is an exact match to my skin — applied by putting on brush dry, then spritzing with Clinique Moisture Surge — this technique really makes minerals usable for me. They apply easier, spread farther, cover sheerly with less product, etc. I thought this looked perfect today. Very simple and fast.
Powder: BE feather light mineral veil This has some shimmer to it. I much prefer it to the regular mineral veil, which is too dark/yellow and matte for me.
Nose: Almost immediately it looked polka dotty, but I used a triangle sponge to blot at it. That seems to smooth it in, like buffing, and it covers and fills in with no dots. Whoo hooo!
Blush: Meow Hugs and Kitties + Arbonne Promise
Highlight: AL Magnolia Blossom
See more of the subtleties of my lips at my LOTD post. The main color here is NYX African Queen. In the second picture it is lined with MAC and rimmed with BE.
What do you think?
I was really pleased with the look of the foundation.
What are you up to today? I’m going to do some more house-sorting/errands/life in the fast lane. And try to enjoy summer.
Addendum: By the end of the day, the mineral foundation still looked perfect, as far as the finish went, but it looked dry, without being dry, if that makes sense. To touch my face, it felt normal/moist. To look at me, it still looked the same, but dry/ier. It no longer looked dewy. It magnified any little lines or settling I had in my face. This won’t keep me from trying it again, especially on weekends for a quick makeup, now that I have a technique that works. But so far, with me, with my kind of skin, and the appearance of my skin at this time of life, a liquid or cream foundation looks better all day and is more flattering. I should have taken another picture, and next time I will if it does the same. The color was absolutely perfect, though!

This was yesterday’s FOTD. A friend gave me more Sheer Cover, including another palette of these eye shadows. I remember how much I loved the look earlier, they are a lovely natural look (the palette has both cool and warm shades.) This is the cool. I wanted to try out the new eye shape again to see how it fared with this palette. I’m not used to such natural looks!
Another 5 min makeup. It was quick and easy and summery. It was a little hard to get the eye shape to define because the colors are so natural.
I used MK mascara and for some reason it drifted. That usually doesn’t happen. It seemed smudgy all day.
Base: Beauticontrol pink cream
Liner: MAC white tightlined top and wetlined bottom. Avon Gilded Grapepencil lined under eye — almost a brown. MAC Smolder pencil — blackest black — lined on top.
Brows: Chanel duo powder.
Concealer: YSL Touch Eclat

Primer: Sheer Cover
Foundation: Lancome minerals (and their powder) on dry brush, then spritzed with Clinique Moisture Surge before applying. I like this application.
Blush: BE Vintage Peach + Meow Water Lilies
Highlight: Beauticontrol Pink Powder (with shimmer) + AL Magnolia Blossom

Lips:
base: SCA hyaluronic pen
Guerlain 08 lined with Guerlain Rose Indien pencil

What did you do for makeup? Are you finding you want quick and easy for summer?
I promised myself on Sunday that I wouldn’t do anything on Monday as far as running around, because I’m still recovering (ha!) from the long trip, but I ended up getting my errands done for the week. Whoo hooo!
How about you?
