FOTD Meow AL Eyes, Zalan lips

The lips are a match for my shirt, only deeper, not as red as they show up with flash.

IdealEyes description
My view: They are pearlized, not frosted, with a high sheen, so I felt I could work with the dark colors on my fair skin. There would be enough light reflected that they would work well. While a little dark for day for spring, they matched my shirt and I wanted to try them.

Our top selling line of mineral shadows! They’re pearlized (or, as we like to think of them, “purrr-lized”!) shadow colors with sophistication. They’re available in a full range of color choices, with a rich, creamy consistency that clings to the brush for easy and smooth long wearing application. Beautiful colors that catch the light with the soft, glowing, velvety sheen. Elegant, yet fun, you’ll want them all!

Twilight (the movie)

We got to the theater about 10:45 last night, and they were letting us get our seats. They had sold out 4 theaters, which was probably par for the course, because one of the other theaters in town had done the same. Next to us was a girl and her father. He had never read the books.

My disclaimer is that I’ve read the books, but found them hard to get into, and I consider them OK, but not great.

Anyway, we had a good time. Except for the first couple of scenes (which are like the book — dorky/hokey teen) — and we hoped it wouldn’t be like that for the entire movie (and it wasn’t) — we enjoyed the movie. I’d give it a 4, except for those scenes, so it’s a 3. And I bet if we saw the movie again, those scenes would not bother us, because we know where its heading.

Interestingly, the father next to us said he wouldn’t give it a 5, but he’d give it a 4, and he intended to read the books.

I heard people behind me saying at the movie’s end that they are switching teams from Team Jacob to Team Edward.

Then this morning’s paper gave it a 1.5. No, no, no.

I loved the relationship between the teen friends — well cast — and Bella. Bella is just perfect for the part, very beautiful and easy to watch. (I agree with the reviewer that it would be fun to see her part played by the one friend.) Sometimes these teen friends (and ‘teen’ vampires) are the best parts of the movie. The Cullen father gets some swoons when he first appears on screen.

And the exceedingly bad vampires have fun with their parts.

Nothing can compete with the scenery. Or the screen kisses. Or the spectacular baseball game…and the ensuing scene with the bad vamps.

I loved the relationship between Bella and her father. It was true to life and very funny in parts, just the way teens and their parents/fathers are.

I disagree with the reviewer who said there was no humor. We laughed at a lot of the friends’ convos and Bella and her dad.

I was afraid how I’d take the ballet school scene, but it was very well done. Scary, but not frightening. After all, we know where the story is heading. James is the vampire you love to see die.

And we loved the ending. It was just right. All the way over CG wondered if it would end at the last chapter or the first chapter of the beginning of the book.

OK, where is Book 2’s movie? Count us in for the first night midnight showing. CG is already talking about seeing this one again.

In one sense it is refreshing to see a movie where the romance is unrequited. Bella and Edward have chemistry and double entendres, but they also have innocence and love, the unfoldment of learning about the other, caring and the desire to protect (even if the protection is necessary because of the protagonist.)

Even I liked it!

Review New Moon (movie)

Three of us went together last night to the local premiere of New Moon. We got there about 9:15, and there was already a line forming. A couple had been the first at about 5:30. We had picked up our tickets about a week ago.

The scoop was that another local theater was sold out, so the couple behind us had driven to this theater and got 2 of the last 50 tickets, which were gone before the show started. (There were 10 theaters showing it at midnight just where we were.)

We were let in, in the order of how we had lined up, according to the theater we had tickets for.

CGI
We already knew the special effects would be better than the first movie because we had seen quite a bit in the advertising. It was. One scene looked improbable, but then the story is too, so nobody cared.

The books or the movies?

In many ways I think the story translates better to movies than it was in the books.

Team Jacob or Team Edward?
Jacob is hot, oh yeah, those extra pounds went all to muscle and look better on his face too. Can you spell B-U-F-F? He really did well in this movie, considering the fan base leans heavily toward Edward. Edward is Edward. He is about as mopey as Bella. When he has good lines, he’s better than when he doesn’t.

Bella
Well, she mopes a lot, as she does in the book. The movie shows how long this goes on, as well as how her nightmares affect her and her father. She never crosses a line from friendship with Jacob, but it is easy to see how he would read her signals differently. Stupid girl, to court disaster on more than one front.

The friends
I love the friend dynamic, as always. Jessica is great, wish she had more scenes.

The Cullen Family
It’s good to see our old friends again. Even in short vignettes, they forward the story. Dr. Carlisle …Esme…Emmet, love him — he’s a hunk that manages to wrest a lot out of a few words. Jason, he has a major scene. Alice, I’d like to see even more of her. I liked her hair better spiky. I think they were trying to give her a more mature look.

Victoria
The vamp you love to hate. Beautiful hair! Deathly evil. Very fast.

Laurent
He is a scene stealer. Great casting!

The werewolves
They managed to get the dynamics down pat. Great CGI. Some great scenes with Jacob.
Leader of the pack

The Volturi
Well done. Beautifully filmed. Dakota Fanning as Jane, is eerily, beautifully a Volturi vamp.

The verdict
The end is strong and abrupt. Most were: what!?! knowing, of course, that we are ready for the next one.

Many of the people said they were coming back this weekend to see it again to catch the things they were sure they missed on the first showing.

Is some of the acting wooden? Yes. Does it matter? Not particularly.

Are some of the lines laughable? Yes. But who cares and who’s counting?

In the end, these are people (and vamps and werewolves) we care about. We root for the good guys/vamps/werewolves. We want to see love succeed. We want to see evil excised.

Is the whole thing camp?
Oh yeah, but it’s a camp you love to love. It’s probably a 2* but I’d give it a 2.5* or 3* because, you know, like, for what it is, it simply is.

I’d see it again. We got home about 3 am.

FOTD New Moon look with Aromaleigh + MAC

Are you going to New Moon?
Tonight is the premiere of New Moon in our area, and we are going to the 12:05 show — the first two theaters were already sold out when we bought our tickets a week ago. There will be 5 theaters in this theater alone, and I have no idea where we will find parking.

Team Jacob or Team Edward?
What do you think? Tonight, I’m gonna be Team Jacob.

Sparkling in sunlight
I always do, with my own sparkly mix of powder. Tonight to jazz it up, I will do a 5 min pick me up overdose using the Twilight Powders from AL and maybe do more spark on my lips.

Eyes:
Base: Nude Frost + BE Queen Phyllis
Inner lids: ephemeral violet

Outer lids and lower drylined: crimson mimicry AL les papillons
Tightlined: midnight flash Clarins pencil

Review: Lustre Aromaleigh Twilight supernatural powder

Are you going to the New Moon premiere?
Are you going to dress for the occasion?

For the story behind the story, go here.

Twilight Lustre
The second one I tried was this one. When applied to my hand, the sparkles are very, very fine, almost invisible. I applied it with my regular powder brush, not a FO brush. I agree with the following description given at the AL website.

Twilight Lustre is a very fine, silky powder that slightly lightens your skin and gives you a luminous gleam. It’s the most subtle of the trio, but personally, I [Kristin, founder of AL] feel that it gives the most interesting effect because it is so finely milled that your skin becomes radiant with an iridescent glow. This makeup is especially dramatic when applied to your face, especially if you have pale, smooth skin- this makeup actually makes your skin look like glowing moonstone, or marble.

My view: I like the effect. I feel my skin is luminous, but with less of a gleam than with Twilight Sparkle. I would wear this alone on a normal day, as I did today.

Photobucket

Here’s another view:

Photobucket

Twilight Sparkle supernatural powder
Yesterday I tried Twilight Sparkle, my first in this set of three. The glitter is very fine and shows up on my hand. On my face, it is a very sheer, sheeny look, not a glimmer look. My own mix is more sparkly, though there is more sparkle in the AL. I applied it with a FO brush.

My view: I would like this one applied over my regular mix as a highlighter. In RL, without the flash, it is more subtle. It is just very sheer, because I applied so little.

Twilight Sparkle contains distinct shimmering iridescent glimmers. In the sunlight or under bright light, it shimmers like radiant tiny diamonds. Apply over skin that you have applied lotion to (preferably with a high SPF, of course!), the effect is even more pronounced, and the product will stay longer on your skin. Twilight Sparkle may slightly lighten your skin, but it is formulated to be suitable for many skintones, in a transparent base.

FOTD
I chose to wear it in yesterday’s FOTDin honor of the DVD debut.

Review: Sparkle Aromaleigh Twilight Supernatural powder

Are you going to New Moon when it premieres?
Are you going to sparkle?

The story behind the story
A few weeks ago on Aromaleigh’s forum, for theme week, it was my turn to suggest the week’s theme. I was telling Book Girl, and she suggested having a Vampire Week, based on the movie Twilight, and the book series.

So that’s what I suggested. I suggested doing a vampire look based on Twilight, using any colors, so long as their skin sparkled in sunlight, which is easy to do with Aromaleigh.

Many entered into the spirit of it, even if they hadn’t heard of the book(s) or movie. That particular theme week had 1582 views and 74 responses, to date. Even Kristin, the founder of Aromaleigh, contributed a look.

And then Kristin developed three powders based on Twilight.

The Twilight DVD came out at midnight Friday night, and we were there — in two cities! Book Girl was out of town.

Twilight Sparkle supernatural powder
This is the first one I’ve tried in this set of three. The glitter is very fine and shows up on my hand. On my face, it is a very sheer, sheeny look, not a glimmer look. My own mix is more sparkly, though there is more sparkle in the AL. I applied it with a FO brush.

Twilight Sparkle may slightly lighten your skin, but it is formulated to be suitable for many skintones, in a transparent base.

Review: Aromaleigh Twilight Supernatural powders

Are you going to the opening night of New Moon?
And are you going to look vampish?

For the story behind the story, go here.

Kristin says: All formulas … work best with those who have pale skin… and produce beautiful effects ranging from ethereal and luminous to boldly dazzling.

Twilight Dazzle
When I applied it to my hand, there were lots of sparklies. To give extra definition and draw the eye to my lips: I applied above my lip what spilled on the counter. I could have as easily used it above my brows or as highlighter under my brows.

Twilight Dazzle provides the most intense borealis iridescent sparkle on your skin. Dazzle sparkles beautifully even under indoor lights, and simply, well… “Dazzles” in the bright sunlight. Wear this one when you *want* to be noticed. Apply over skin that you have applied lotion to (preferably with a high SPF, of course!) and the effect is more pronounced and the product will stay longer on your skin. This formula contains pure mineral makeup shimmer in a transparent base, so it can be used on a variety of skintones.

Photobucket

You can see the sheen it gives, as well as some of the sparkle right above my lip. If you look at the eye to your right you can see a touch of the sparkly Diamond mascara by Bare Essentuals. Here’s my review.

Photobucket

My view:

Moderate sheen; high dazzle, if you apply it strongly, as I did over my lip. I would use this as highlighter, and if it were for evening, I’d apply it a second time — or if I were going to the next Twilight movie or a Twilight party.

My view at night:
By evening this had melded into my skin, but at 12 hours into the makeup, it was beautiful when light hit it at night. Not really noticeable at a distance, it was gorgeous up close — and isn’t that where it counts! When light touched my face, you could see teeny, tiny little glitters. It is aptly named Dazzle.

Lustre
Yesterday I tried this one. When applied to my hand, the sparkles are very, very fine, almost invisible. I applied it with my regular powder brush, not a FO brush. I agree with the following description given at the AL website.

Twilight Beauty

For those of us Twilight die-hards, pun intended, there is a new beauty source on the block, TwilightBeauty. Oh, funny, I just realized they called themselves ‘die-hard’ fans in their FAQ page.

It certainly looks interesting to me. And I wonder if they are allowed to use the images or if they are connected to the franchise.

You can pick Luna or Volturi, Undying Beauty. The colors online look lovely.

When will the order ship?

If you are pre-ordering (that means you will be receiving Twilight Beauty products before anyone else in the world!) your entire order will ship based on the LATEST shipping date for any product included in your order. In other words, if your order contains an item that is available to ship on 9/20 and your order also includes an item that is available to ship 10/30, your entire order will ship on 10/30. If you would like to receive products as they become available, you will need to place different orders. Shipping costs will apply. The free shipping offer on orders $50 or more only applies to single orders and cannot be applied to multiple orders. http://twilightbeauty.com/faq.aspx

What do you think?

Will you try one or two items?
Will you wear it?

Are you ready for movie # 2, New Moon? It will be in theaters on November 20, 2009.

Teen and tweener makeup

Here’s my philosophy on makeup:
Give your girls (and maybe guys) the right colors, teach them how to apply it, and encourage them.

I suspect we will see more and more young men wearing some form of makeup, whether it is called bronzing stick, self-tanner, or etc. And rimming their eyes with liner, possibly in ways you don’t really know it, but it is there. They already use lip balm. It’s only a small step to using a balm with some color. (Edward’s lips bothered me in the Twilight film as they were so red. I wish they’d toned it down a bit.)

What if you don’t want them to wear makeup
Well, you are probably reading the wrong blog.

My niece had a friend whose mom was a hair dresser, with access to every product. She forbade her daughter to wear makeup. I asked my niece: she’s putting it on in school, isn’t she? My niece said: how did you know?

I wasn’t born yesterday.

Give your girls colors you no longer wear, for example, but let them have their own. They will either buy some and stash it at school or borrow their friends which is not sanitary. I would much rather give them their own than have them borrow someone’s.

Tell them not to loan it to anyone or borrow anyone’s. And tell them why. Be graphic if you need to be.

Remember, it’s only makeup!

If you give them colors that are right for them, they are less likely to buy colors that clash.

OTOH, makeup is a fashion statement. They are only young once. Makeup washes off; it’s not permanent. Let them experiment, within reason, or within the school dress codes.

They might look wonderful in Goth-ish makeup, toned down a little. Or in Gothic Lolita makeup, which is popular in Japan, bright wonderful colors that Aromaleigh has. Maybe you would look great in these colors too!

While you’re at it, be sure they have good skin care
Start them early on skin care. This time of life sets the stage for later times. It may also mean they will have less skin problems that come with puberty, if they are cleansing properly.

How do you begin?
Experiment with what you have on hand to see what you like.

What if you don’t know how to apply makeup on your child either because her eyes are different or you don’t feel confident enough?

Go to one of the makeup counters and get her a makeover. If you aren’t happy with one, get another one. Learn as you go. Do this periodically to keep both of your looks current.

A couple of years ago my daughter tried out a Clinique gloss in the store. We got it for her. It looked great. (Whisper.)

How’s my 13 yo, who is from China, doing?
She is so cute! She is actively doing her own makeup now. And doing a darn good job of it too!

A couple of years ago or so, we experimented with doing her eyes. We learned that she can carry — and needs — an upper eye liner line of about 1/4 inch wide in order for it to be seen at all.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, she came home from a gf’s house. Her gf’s mom, who is gorgeous, had done both girls’ makeup. She did my daughter’s eyes with a wide liner, just as we had figured out earlier, and she looked absolutely beautiful. My girl told me that the other mom had once worked at a Clinique counter. She had given her some Clinique sample colors. I reminded my girl that we had figured out this liner a few years ago and that her friends mom had done it correctly. I think this gave her some confidence.

When did she start wearing makeup? Approximately 3 weeks ago.
She said the other day that she has changed since spring break, because before sb she didn’t wear any makeup, now she does her eyes and makeup every day. Many of the girls are wearing makeup now, but not necessarily doing it correctly, according to her. She feels comfortable wearing it, because others are. When she wasn’t wearaing it, she was afraid someone would notice or make comments or tease her. When she began to wear it, others noticed and complimented her. They were ready and so was she.

I had been encouraging her for a while, whenever she mentioned other girls who were wearing makeup. For about a week I did her makeup every morning. I told her she could try doing it herself on the weekend. Then one day she just took off trying it herself and she is getting better every day.

Asian makeup
Meantime there is a wonderful book about Asian makeup, which I have.
Additionally I continue to clip out adverts, etc. featuring Asian models and put them in this book, so my Chinese daughters can see various choices that look lovely.

The verdict
She is getting lots of compliments. We are doing her makeup in a natural manner except for her eyes.

I said to her: wasn’t she glad she had a mom who loved makeup and would give her what she needed and tell her to go for it, rather than be a mom who told her no, then she applied it secretly at school, LOL. I know her well enough to know that would really hurt her to think she had to be secretive.

Do you have a teen or tweener?
Do they wear makeup?

When did you begin to wear makeup?
I was somewhere around 13. Then at about age 15, in 10th grade, I went to modeling school and learned more techniques there. Eventually in my 20s I taught professional makeup as a hobby.

It has to start somewhere.

Did your mother encourage you?
My mother always wore lipstick and powder. She never changed her color of lippie even if she changed brands. She never held me back.
