Suzanne Brockmann writes interesting books, and this is no exception. I stumbled across one of her books a few years ago. She writes military fiction (Navy Seals) with characters you enjoy, rolled up with passion for work and each other, as well as the requisite love story, a little danger and a lot of action. I haven't read her books in any particular order, but each book concentrates more on one of the characters than another in a continuing saga of sorts.

This book is a love story about a hero and a hero. It is not heterosexual. She writes with compassion and understanding. Her son Jason is gay, she tells us in an addendum, and she lives in Massachusetts with her husband, author Ed Gaffney.

The book is set in Boston where Jules and Robin are going to be married, taking each other as life partners. Along the way, both of their lives are endangered -- Jules because of his work and Robin because he is (they are) peripherally stalked.

I wouldn't say this is the best of her books. There is less action, though what there is takes place in Afghanistan. For the most part, it is a love story. She ties present feelings and actions to past and childhood events. She makes you care for her characters' hurts, which is a skill in itself.

Suzanne Brockman writes several series. This book is from her Troubleshooter's series, stories of US Navy Seal Team Sixteen. Each book details the story of another member of the team, as well as intertwines the characters more and more.

I'm not sure if this is the first book, but it's a good place to start. I have liked some of the stories more than others, but I like the concept.

I picked this book up again recently and found myself rereading it, something I rarely do.

You can call these romance books with a twist. The twist is, of course, saving the day.

In this book, various voices narrate the action. I particularly liked this. It was believable and not just a writing device. It actually allowed the reader to catch glimpses of the inner persons. And woven through the book are the narrations of a romance and heroic actions during WWII in France. These actions have direct bearing on the circumstances in the book.

There is to be a ceremony honoring the hero of Baldwin's Bridge (Tom's uncle -- and until this point in time Tom never knew of the actions of his uncle in OSS) -- and his uncle plans to give an interview to a reporter detailing the real hero (Kelly's father.)

The characters rise to the occasion, get the bad guy(s), save the day, fall in love -- what more could you want from a story.

And the romance develops over a slow pace -- the entire book -- with a lot of stream of consciousness and flirting and some serious, but not crude, sex.

Tom has been told that his kind of head injury may result in paranoia. And he has bad headaches throughout the book.

When he first catches a glimpse of the man he strongly believes is the Merchant, he recognizes the odd way he puts his backpack on his shoulders. He has altered his appearance some, if indeed it is the Merchant. Tom feels it is his duty to report this sighting, but it is not well received. No legitimate source of intel has anything, but the fact that it is believed the Merchant died of his injuries in the last encounter.

Tom continues to catch glimpses of him -- as well as the tattoo that members of the Merchant's team use to identify themselves.

But has he seen him or hasn't he? Does he just imagine there is danger when there is not? Even though paranoia usually means thinking that only oneself is in danger, whereas here he sees the possibility of others' being in danger, he must decide if he should pursue following this lead, even if it means he could be medically discharged from the Seals.

He calls in as many of his trusted team as he can, making them know it is not an order, that they are acting on their own time (vacation.) Good thing he did too.

The action gets very fast paced at the end where they must find the bomb and save the day.

Which is your favorite? This is one of mine. I kept putting it down so as to savor the finish.

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed an author and book, as much as I enjoyed Christie Craig's Divorced, Desperate, and Dating. This book is easily as good, if not better, than Janet Evanovich's series featuring Stephanie Plum. Seriously. If you like Stephanie Plum, you will love this book. And the good news is that it is part of a trilogy, so there is more on offer, including other books by this author.

I suppose you would call this romantic suspense, but there is so much wit and humor in it, that it crosses genres, as far as I'm concerned.

I managed to pick it up when it was offered for free on Kindle. Yippee!

Make no mistake, the sex is hot and heavy, but it is realistic. The hero and heroine do not jump into bed at the first available moment, but there is a lot of sexual tension as they determine how far they will take the relationship.

Sue Finley is a murder mystery writer. She researches how to kill her victims. Her good friend is married to a police officer, whose good friend is Jason Dodds, also a police officer. It just so happens that 4 months earlier, she and Jason had shared a spectacular kiss. He asked for her number, but he hasn't called her back.

In the meantime, she has begun to date Paul who is just odd enough to give you the willies. She is considering breaking it off.

And then she starts getting threats to kill her that are copycatting the book she has written, but is not yet published.

At first, it seems like a loathsome prank or publicity stunt, though she realizes it is not. Then it escalates into serious territory. Re-enter Jason Dodds to save the day -- and he does. He is one of the first to take the threats seriously, and he refuses to leave her until the person behind the threats is discovered. He has, what he thinks, are good reasons for not calling her after their kiss, but that goes out the window when they are in close proximity.

There really is some suspense here, but it doesn't get into the horrors of suspense mysteries, thankfully. I wanted to finish the book to know where it was going.

The story is peopled with odd characters, similar to the Stephanie Plum stories. Her mom is a character, and her grandparents keep tabs on her life. There is a lot of love, even with peoples' eccentricities.

I really enjoyed the book. I give it 4 out of 4 *, and I will look for her other books.

Bookgirl and I went to The Proposal this morning. The theater was probably about 2/3 full -- a good crowd! And there were some men, not a lot, but a few.

We thoroughly enjoyed the movie and laughed our way through it. It was sweet, poignant, a hoot (especially Gammy (Betty White) who steals every scene she's in -- in a good way), a little raunchy (not too bad) -- just all round fun.

A summer escape. Yep, that's what it is. We get enough of the other just in the news.

You can be pretty sure it has a happy ending. Believable, but happy. Who doesn't want to see life wrapped up happily in a couple of hours?

And we saw two people who are fun to watch, not to mention all the others in the film too. Bookgirl particularly liked Mary Steenburgen as the mother. Craig T. Nelson is the father. Ryan Reynolds is easy on the eyes, for sure, as the male lead. I'd go see him again in a heartbeat. We always like Sandra Bullock. I liked the relationships within the family.

Judging from the size of the crowd, I think a lot of us are looking for happy movies that aren't sugary.

Or are a little sugary, but not like syrup.

I heard from a friend that she saw it on Sunday with a friend, and they both liked it too.

Well, sure, it's predictable. Maybe even a rehash, but hey, it's fun to watch. One quick nude scene, more suggested than actual. And more of Sandra B -- which is to be expected, even if not fair.

So there you have it! If you are in the mood, go for it! Have you seen it? I give it a 3. And a 7 for scenery. I'd like to be back in Sitka this summer.

There's nothing better than a new Stone Barrington novel, when it works, and this one works.

I got Strategic Moves from the library. This is book # 19 in the series, count 'em.

It has the usual cast of characters
This is one reason the books are so fun. There is Stone, of course, the ex-cop, now lawyer; Dino, his friend, a cop; Elaine, who owns the restaurant they love to eat in; Lance Cabot, the CIA man; now there is Mike Eggers, who owns a security company whose late owner was killed in a mistaken identity; and there is Herbie Fisher, the irritating little man who is always in the middle of things, through no fault, ahem, of his own. Even Holly Barker makes an appearance.

Add in a few beautiful women, a couple of homicides, a man who is adept at disguises, and you have a recipe for fun.

The story
You just have to smile at the convoluted storyline...too complicated to talk about, but not too complicated to follow.

But Stone has his clients' best interests at heart, and he always manages to best the ones who would like to best him. He is loyal to his friends, and they know who they are. And he has the right ones -- not only does he have security, but he has the best wire-and-bug man in the business, even better than the CIA.

When a Mercedes falls out of the sky and a parachute is found not too far away, you just know that Barrington is somehow mixed up in it.

How about romance
Well, Stone always has some lady friend, but the action is off page, though the clever asides are not.

The story behind the story
A few weeks ago on Aromaleigh's forum, for theme week, it was my turn to suggest the week's theme. I was telling Book Girl, and she suggested having a Vampire Week, based on the movie Twilight, and the book series.

So that's what I suggested. I suggested doing a vampire look based on Twilight, using any colors, so long as their skin sparkled in sunlight, which is easy to do with Aromaleigh.

Many entered into the spirit of it, even if they hadn't heard of the book(s) or movie. That particular theme week had 1582 views and 74 responses, to date. Even Kristin, the founder of Aromaleigh, contributed a look.

And then Kristin developed three powders based on Twilight.

The Twilight DVD came out at midnight Friday night, and we were there -- in two cities! Book Girl was out of town.

Twilight Sparkle supernatural powder
This is the first one I've tried in this set of three. The glitter is very fine and shows up on my hand. On my face, it is a very sheer, sheeny look, not a glimmer look. My own mix is more sparkly, though there is more sparkle in the AL. I applied it with a FO brush.

Twilight Sparkle contains distinct shimmering iridescent glimmers. In the sunlight or under bright light, it shimmers like radiant tiny diamonds. Apply over skin that you have applied lotion to (preferably with a high SPF, of course!), the effect is even more pronounced, and the product will stay longer on your skin. Twilight Sparkle may slightly lighten your skin, but it is formulated to be suitable for many skintones, in a transparent base.

I chose to wear it in my FOTD today in honor of the DVD debut.

This book jumped out at me from the library shelf, and because it sounded more interesting than some, I thought I'd give it a try.

I've never seen this subject matter in a novel -- compulsive gambling -- which doesn't mean there aren't some books that deal with it. Hudson does such a good job of describing it, that if you have trouble with this, as someone I know does, you shouldn't read it.

The only thing Skye McNally doesn't play are the slots:

I play things where a little skill and intuition are involved. Not slots...I'll take a bet on whether or not there's a gas station in the next twenty miles. Whether or not it rains tomorrow. Whether or not I can somehow pull an inside straight. I like blackjack. I like poker. p 126

With a father who's a bookie, an ex-husband who helps her father run his business in New York, growing up without her mother, Skye is a flawed character with a heart of gold and a happy ending. She is living in Las Vegas, attending Gambling Anonymous meetings, hoping to get her coin that represents going 30 days without gambling. Her sponsor is a tough talking, also-heart-of-gold, retired football player.

When one of Skye's female acquaintances is found murdered for lack of ability to pay back her gambling debts, a woman who had turned to turning tricks, Skye finds herself face to face with the worst case scenario of her own life. She escapes to the Nevada desert to get away.

...I glimpsed the absolute fright wig that was my hair. Only bald men should drive convertibles. Sure, it looks all sexy driving with your hair whipping around your face, but really...I looked like I'd stuck my finger in an electrical socket. My jet-black curls made Medusa's look well-coifed...p 116

There, in a chance encounter, she meets another football player who has escaped from his own situation just before Superbowl. He had learned through his own sleuthing that he'd been poisoned with digitalis so that the upcoming game would be thrown and the one(s) responsible for poisoning him would have a chance to recoup his/their own debts.

You can imagine what happens when the press gets wind of their romance.

Throw in other assorted characters, including a fixer who fixes the things that professional athletes get into, a bit of a gay love story, and the inside scoop on gambling, and you have a book that at least holds your interest. Hudson does a good job making it all seem believable.

There's a lot of humor in this book, a good deal of poignancy, characters that genuinely care for each other. And Skye is a wise-cracking intelligent woman who stands her ground against impossible odds and comes out on top.

4 star. One thing I do wish, though, is that there was less drinking.

One genre I generally will read is romantic suspense. It's a little softer than suspense, which hits too close to home for me now.

Drue Allen’s first book, The Cost of Love, is romantic suspense at its best. I hope she has plans to make this a series.

In the interests of transparency: I was given a pdf to read by Love Romance Passion who received it from Drue prior to publication. I put it on my Kindle, and unfortunately it didn’t format perfectly, which was super annoying, but the book was so good, I could overlook all that.

In the meantime, if you like the romantic suspense genre, you will love this book. It is not erotica. It is very suspenseful! Every page is a page turner. Everyone is suspect. I missed entirely who the baddie is.

It becomes clear that the bad guys are domestic, but that isn't clear for a while. Who are the mole(s)...

My take:
I give this 8* out of 5, that's how good it is. Make no mistake, it is suspenseful; there are murders and gruesome details... believable characters... and more.

Would a man like this book?
I think so. It has plenty of action. I think it would make a wonderful movie -- now who to cast...

A friend loaned me her copy of the book eat, pray, love, because she liked it so well and felt I would too. I knew by the first few pages that I wanted a copy of my own.

It took me quite a while to work my way through the book, but in that way I could savor it. It's a rare book that is so enjoyable.

Gilbert has a wonderful way with words.

And the good news is that it is being made into a movie with Julia Roberts. That should be interesting! [edited: Here is my review of the movie -- it was interesting! I am currently re-reading the book after seeing the movie.]

The book is her chronicle of searching across Italy (where she eats her way, while learning Italian), India (where she is in an Ashram searching for God, finding herself in silent devotion and in words and communion with others), and Bali (where she finds love and helps a woman buy a home.)

Along the way we see her work through the angst of her difficult divorce. She moves from a sense of no belief to profundity. It is by turns funny, touching, endearing, sad...

If you've read it, how did you like it?
And if you haven't, treat yourself.

I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

SEALed with a Promise by Mary Margret Daughtridge is the second book I've read in this series.

I'm enjoying taking the time to read lately -- and giving up one of my other loves, beading, at least for the moment. I only have time to do one extra thing and for now it is catching up on reading, which I love and haven't had time for.

Like her first book, SEALed with a Kiss</em>, the SEAL aspect of the story is almost peripheral. There isn't any war game going on, except for the prologue, and that is relatively minor. What we see is the strong friendships between the men who are in the same unit, and we see some of their comradery, as well as their inner thoughts, especially Do-Lord's, as this is his story. The war going on is in his thoughts.

The story revolves around the wedding of Pickett and Jax, from the first book. I'm guessing, but I don't know, that perhaps the third book revolves around the wedding that is Do-Lord's.

Do-Lord has a serious ethical and moral problem. Charged with protecting, he has in his gun-sights Teague Calhoun, the man he had vowed to kill when he was a teen. He holds him responsible for his mother's death. He knows he could take him out, but it goes against all that he stands for as a SEAL. It shakes him to his core, that he could endanger his unit.

Do-Lord has a high I.Q. which he has managed to hide most of his life, as well as almost photographic memory, and the ability to (or nearly to) foresee future events when in dangerous situations.

Fast forward to the actual story. Do-Lord is taking part in the wedding, as is Pickett's good friend Emma. Emma's problem is lack of confidence, despite having her Ph.D. She dislocated her shoulder saving a student and has her arm in a sling. This provides Do-Lord the opportunity to be of service. He sees through her frumpy appearance, surprised that his libido has kicked in big-time. And then, he realizes that she can afford him entrance into Calhoun's life, for though she is not a relative (and she dislikes him) she calls Calhoun Uncle Teague.

The promise comes in when Emma insists that they promise each other that if they start a relationship they will be loyal, as well as exclusive. Do-Lord asks her if she would insist marriage be a part of the deal, but she stops short of this.

What starts out as a way to get to Calhoun, ends up rescuing Do-Lord (and Emma) and turns into true love. Along the way Do-Lord learns a few things about himself, especially that revenge doesn't pay. He is able to find another way and gain the upper hand.

Warning: there is a bit about celiac disease, which Pickett has, which forwards this story. There is also something about Falconi anemia. And there is a bit about blood draws. Surprisingly, I know someone in RL with this disease, which is rare. (I also have known someone with Celiac disease.) While these are important aspects to the story, they do not overwhelm it.

I give this 5 out of 5. The love story is believable. I like the friendships. I like the family loyalty. I enjoy seeing the next part of the story unfold, as it would in RL. I might even be able to figure out whose story comes next.
