To honor the release of the movie, One for the Money, which I reviewed earlier, I decided to reread the Stephanie Plum novels. I forget the details, but not the laughter.

Different than the other books
I remember trying to read this book earlier, but for whatever reason, I wasn't in the mood, so it was one I skimmed so fast, it just went right out of my head. But Visions of Sugar Plums is a fun read, once you wrap your mind around the fact that it is not a normal Stephanie Plum novel.

It is different than the other Stephanie Plum novels because it has elements of fantasy in it, or rather different elements of fantasy, the supernatural. I mean, it is a fantasy to have both Ranger and Morelli in one's life. But this novel has Diesel, the guy who magically pops into Stephanie's kitchen one day. What is he, a guy or an angel? or something altogether different?

Whatever he is, he has the ability to appear at will, and he is here to help Stephanie who is, as usual, in over her head.

And don't you know that where Stephanie is involved, so is Grandma Mazur who has a studmuffin of her own.

And along the way there are a few family crises, both funny and touching. Morelli pops in and out occasionally, but no Ranger, alas.

The story
This time Stephanie is out to bring in Santy Claws who runs a toy shop and a toy factory and is in process of hiring little people (elves) to make his toys.

Meantime someone is out to get Santy Claws. And it turns out that Santy has supernatural abilities of his own to hold this crime in check. And Diesel is there to help him, because Santy's powers are waning as he ages, and so are the powers of his enemy.

And it turns out that perhaps one other of Stephanie's family members might also have some of the supernatural.

Have you read it?
I think I originally was looking for more of a regular Stephanie Plum book, but once I got into the idea of the supernatural, I liked it, the second go-round.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

We went to see this at the midnight show of opening night. There weren't a lot of folks there, which surprised me, but it might have been because people were sure about the casting.

If you love the book, you will love the movie. I'd see it again in a minute, and I will definitely buy it when it comes out as a DVD.

What's not to love about a movie that makes you happy, where you know the main character is going to be OK, where there is a lot of humor, and it is fun to watch!

Casting:
Let's talk casting. I wasn't at all convinced until I saw the movie. It was perfect.

I liked the idea of Katherine Heigl, but I wasn't sure if I'd like her in dark hair. Not to worry. She looked great.

Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur was not at all who I pictured. But she got me in the first minute of her first appearance on screen. Considering Grandma Mazur is a favorite character, that is saying something.

Lulu -- well, I had thought Queen Latifah, but she is too high class for the part. But Sherri Shepherd was perfect in the part, and her getups were just like Janet Evanovich describes her.

Vinnie (Patrick Fischler) was perfect.

Now Morelli (Jason O'Mara) turned out to be a good choice. There is a lot of magnetism between him and Stephanie.

And speaking of magnetism, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, turned out to be perfect. Many of us had thought of the Rock in this part, but Daniel couldn't be beat.

Ana Reeder as Connie, does a good job.

I didn't have anybody in mind for her parents, so they were OK. They don't have a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters.

If you liked the book, do yourself a favor and get on down and see the movie. You know it is a terrific franchise, and I'd like to see the other books made as movies too. This one has to sell tickets for that to happen. I'd definitely go see them.

This is the 4th book in the T-FLAC series.

I have also reviewed the first (Kiss and Tell) and second books (Hide and Seek).

The hero
In too Deep follows the story of Michael Wright, the second of the three Wright brothers. When the story opens, he is a changed man. No longer a Navy Seal, because he lost one eye on his last assignment, he now fights his fear of the water. All he wants to do is revenge the death of Hugo, his partner.

As luck would have it, he meets the daughter of his arch-enemy. He rescues her from certain death when the yacht she is on explodes.

Tally Cruise has come to the same island to meet her father, having been invited there. Michael expects he will use her to get to her father, but he underestimates Tally herself.

The heroine
Tally has not had a happy childhood, traipsing all over the world in search of her illusive father at the whim of her mother. She is fighting her own demons. Not as beautiful as her mother, never really having the love of her father, extremely afraid of the dark ...

Like the other Adair females, she is strong and feisty, fighting for her life on more than one occasion and fighting for Michael's life, once she knows he is trustworthy.

Flashbacks
Michael's flashbacks eventually reveal to us the accident that took his eye. Tally's one flashback reveals to her and to us why she is afraid of the dark.

Tally's father
SOB doesn't begin to describe him. He doesn't show up on the scene until the last few pages. One particular act of murder on his part is particularly shocking and grim, even if you don't much like the one he kills.

Figuring it all out
It doesn't take long to figure out that Tally is slated for murder. The reader figures it out, at least I did, before she or Michael do. The question is, by whom?

The sex
Definitely there. The love story is believable.

My take
There is violence in this book. The baddies get theirs, which doesn't hurt the reader a bit. You practically cheer. Tally is roughed up more than once, but more than holds her own. She gives as good as she gets, sometimes almost comically. Though you can almost feel her palpable fear, you also see how strong she is not to give in to it. The book is not as dark as the second book, thankfully, or I couldn't keep reading the series.

Don't knock ebooks if you haven't tried them. Convenience is the number one reason: easy to carry; easy to obtain a new book; easy to read; easy... easy... easy...

Which one?
The biggest decision you will have to make, if you don't own one, is which one is right for you. And you can't go wrong with a Kindle.

The rest have other drawing cards, such as Sony which will allow you to download library ebooks. But it's a moot point, if your library doesn't have any. And remember an elibrarybook is similar to taking out a (old-fashioned) paper book. The library only has so many copies and you have a limited time to check them out. There might even be a waiting list for new books.

What's the trend?
The current trend is to more and more ebooks and ereaders. And the market isn't saturated by any means.

Who's gonna win?
The old west mentality of writers and publishers and agents hacking their way to new agreements, cutting out the middle (wo)men, is well and alive. Not to mention Amazon is giving larger percentages to writers for ebooks sold than they currently receive for other modes of publishing.

Tim Dorsey who writes the best selling books about Serge and his Florida haunts, as well as his craziness, has rewritten all his contracts to include ebooks. Whereas in times past, he saw only a few ebook sales, he has seen a couple of formats sold a couple of thousand. He says it is moving up an exponential curve. But he still continues to publish through his usual channels because they are the ones who supported him in the beginning.

Do writers really want to miss out on this? I doubt it...

In June J. A. Konrath, mystery writer, earned $12,000 from Kindle alone. And he's chosen to publish only on Kindle, ones that were rejected by print publishers, and he is making serious bucks, which he says will only increase. And this is money he is earning on previously published works, so he is picking up new business without equal time expended.

If you are looking for a modern Gothic romantic suspense, heavy on the suspense, Winslow Eliot is a good choice for you to pursue, pun intended. I reviewed Heaven Falls earlier. Eliot gave me a copy of Pursued for Kindle.

Pursued is in the best tradition of Nora Roberts (or the worst, if you consider some of the elements of the story, including SM and murder, and Machiavellian elements on the part of several characters.) Wow. And I don't use this comparison lightly.

Parts were difficult for me to read. They must have been difficult to write so plausibly. This is not chick lit.

Her novels have been translated into eleven languages and published in twenty countries. That should give you an idea of how well she writes. Very well! Creepily well.

I had to know how it ended on this one. So I skipped ahead. Then back again to the storyline. My bad. But that gives you an idea of how much suspense there is in this one.

Whereas Heavens Falls has chapter headings of essential oils, Pursued has chapter headings of Tarot Card readings.

The story opens with a hurricane. And between the suspense and the action, it never lets up.

What it's about
Leigh is an investigative journalist. Her bf is Chelsea. The two of them rescue two men trapped in a car during the hurricane, and wouldn't you know that Leigh falls for one of them. Kale just so happens to be a researcher, and the man in the car, Peregrine, is the one who destroyed him. How this man is in the car is part of the story.

Shortly thereafter, Leigh is attacked (hit over the head) and a beautiful chalice, that may or may not have something to do with Kale's research, is stolen along with other parts of his research. Then Leigh is attacked again, and her computer stolen, and her research on Kale is used to discredit him more.

And then what
It is too complicated, but well written, to give any of it away. It moves from Hawaii to Milan to Sydney to London to spots in between. There are plots within plots, involving the destruction of anyone close to either Leigh or Kale.

Hard for me
It was hard for me to see Leigh put herself increasingly at risk, even knowing her intuition about Perry. Of course, she is an investigative reporter, but even so, there are some hornet's nests you do not stir up. And why would she put herself in harm's way, having so many intuitive feelings.

As far as Chelsea goes who begins to work for Perry's adopted sister, and even Beth, Leigh's sister, if it is too good to be true, likely it is. Stay away, no matter how enticing it may seem.

It also was hard for me to see Chelsea and Kale together, knowing how Kale had been treated earlier by Perry. Wouldn't you think they would realize they had been thrown together for just that purpose! And knowing that Chelsea was supposed to be Leigh's friend that she would do so.

Romantic suspense or thriller?
I would likely categorize this as thriller. The romance between Leigh and Kale is largely unrequited. What Perry calls love is convoluted at best, and the SM is heavy.

And it holds right up to the end where the suspense leads to a denouement both necessary and hard to believe it is actually achieved.

Be warned
There is SM incest between two adult foster adopted adults that began when one was a child.

And more, including a suicide attempt and mental issues.

Have you read any of her books? I give it 5 star out of 5 for the overall book, but for the SM elements, 2 star, because it is not something that I usually read, but written 5 star.

Eliot is a humanities teacher. If she teaches as well as she writes, what a class that would be!

I'm not sure how I missed this book when it first came out, but if you are fascinated by jewelry and like a good read, I highly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down, once I started it.

And while it is available for Kindle, only buy it in hard cover. There must be several hundred full color photos, and you would miss a lot by seeing it only in black and white.

I must have been sleeping during the entire time Albright was Secretary of State, because I never knew anything about her wearing pins to send a message or to relay how she was feeling about sensitive talks. During the time she served in this position, once she began wearing pins there was even a website dedicated to watching what pin she wore and what it might possibly mean. I would have liked to have followed that, if I had known about it!

She fills the book with interesting vignettes of her life. I never knew she was born in Czechoslovakia or that her father was a diplomat or that she went to Wellsley and married into the Guggenheim family. It must have been a great advantage to speak and understand more than English in her political life.

The pictures in the book take your breath away! Many of the pins are gemstones and expensive, but there are many that are antique costume pins. She speaks about buying, at full price, some of the pins that were gifted to her in diplomatic negotiations.

When the Russians bugged her office, she wore a HUGE gemstone cockroach as a pin. It is beautiful, and tremendously savvy, but nothing I could ever carry off.

She began to wear pins when Saddam Hussein called her a snake. She happened to have a gorgeous gold snake pin and she wore it in the meeting she had with him.

She is a smart, aware woman, and to be able to send a message that is both pointed and subtle is quite a forte.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars. While I borrowed it from the library, I would like it to be in my library. I expect I will be buying it.

Book 5 of the T-FLAC series, Out of Sight is the story of Kane Wright, fashion and other photographer extrordinaire. It was strongly hinted in the storylines of other books in the series that he is not all he seems, and so it is.

The hero
Yes, Kane is a photographer, but he is also a T-FLAC operative, going in under the guise of being a photographer to various hotspots in the world. He is adept at disguises. And he's fighting his own demons because he lost one team to torture when they were captured.

The heroine
A.J. Cooper can hit a target without fail, but then she has an accident during training in which she is shot. She is blamed for it, but we learn later there is more to the story. Meantime, sent in as part of Kane's new team to take out a wicked terrorist, she misses the shot. Then freezes in fear. She vows to get the target the next time.

She is another strong woman who doesn't give in to her fears. She holds her own and then some.

The love story
Believable. Some interesting situations, including one place I've never seen in a book before. Adrenaline does that to you. Plus she is very beautiful and both have noticed each other before this op. Together they watch each other's back and get out of some tight situations, which might not work in RL.

Violence
As usual, the baddies get taken out, one by one. A couple of gruesome deaths -- and dead bodies. Some torture, but of baddies to baddies, except for finding the body of one of the good guys. Makes you not want to give the bad guys any chances.

The action is fast and furious. Of course, you root for the good guys (and woman.)

The Phantom Tollbooth is an adorable book. I don't know how I missed it when it first came out.

While marketed for young adults or children, it is definitely one an adult will appreciate, perhaps more than a child. It is chock full of idioms, synonyms, antonyms, and other assorted word plays. Reading it to a child would be a delight for the adult -- and one where you'd have ample opportunity to define phrases and explain why it's so clever. And the child (or adult) would pick up many (or be reminded of many) clever, clever, clever turns of phrase.

In some ways, it reminds me of the classic Half Magic.

And it's a cute story, to boot!

Anna Quinlan wrote a book report on it when she was 10 and said: "This is the best book ever."

I have to agree. I give it 5 stars out of 5 stars.

The story
Milo is a very bored young man, totally glum. Learning for him is nothing short of useless -- why would he ever need any of that information!

Ah, but he is about to receive a magic tollbooth that will take him to lands beyond where he will rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason. Along the way he will travel in such places as: Dictionopolos and Digitopolos and meet the Mathemagician, among others.

His companions are the dog Tock (who has a clock built in) and the Humbug.

Have you read it?
The author has also collaborated on a musical score and a libretto for an opera that is performed in schools and theaters:

And he has written a number of other books that I will be looking into. One, The Dot and the Line, was made into an Academy-Award winning film.

I got mine from the library, but bought it for my Kindle too.

Well, whaddya know. We are moving into a new era, for sure!

2009 Christmas season
Kindle was the most gifted item in Amazon's history
I'm not surprised!

However, Amazon gave no sales figures for the device or the electronic book sales.

Of interest, perhaps, is that Amazon does not pay bloggers when a blog reader orders an ebook, only for paper books that are purchased via a blog, if that app has been activated.

It's a first:
2009 More electronic books sold for Kindle than paper books

The sales record was achieved on Friday, December 25, Christmas Day, when people who had received a Kindle as a present logged on to Amazon.com to load their new Kindle with reading material.

Topic of conversation when traveling
Who knew!

Reading an ebook, my Kindle, becomes a way to meet people -- either those who already have a Kindle or those who want to know or ask about it.

I met some cool folks on recent travels.

I did not see any other ebooks, only Kindle.

I do. The more I use it, the better I like and enjoy it, especially for travel.

I'm trying to be carefully frugal. Most of my ebooks now are free ones, but I am slowly buying a few too.

I'm waiting for Kindle to match the Sony ebook capability of reading library books. That would be great! Do you think it will happen?

Update 2011: They do, but I haven't tried it yet. And my library now has the capability. Whoo hooo!

Code Name Willow is a well written romantic suspense. More romance, not terribly scary, a bit brutal, which sounds like an oxymoron. It was offered as a free ebook. I take every free book that is offered, if I think I might want to read it some day. I'm not sure this has been published yet.

The Story
Maggie Stone, the daughter of the former US President, counsels troubled youths. When she was younger, she was a wild child, guarded by secret service agent Jack Bennett. She felt she was in love with him then, but he turned her down, not that he wanted to.

Now one of the teens she counsels, Remy Chauvin, with a rap sheet as long as your arm, claims he has seen a policeman kill a man, execution style. He is, of course, not believed. The cop is squeaky clean. To make matters worse, not too long thereafter he goes to his foster home and finds blood on the carpet and evidence that his foster parents have been murdered.

In his excitement he waves a knife around Maggie. When she goes to his foster home there is no evidence, not even a carpet. However, she has never seen the place so clean, so she is inclined to believe him. Later, it is reported that a bloody carpet was found in the home, so they know something has happened and that Remy is likely being blamed for it.

She turns to Jack Bennett to keep them safe, but he isn't so sure which story is true.

Then Remy and Maggie are targeted for a kill by more corrupt police. Lucky for them that Remy had found a safe room in Jack's house where they hid and were able to warn Jack before he walked in on the men. Jack sees the two men leaving, realizes they are police, so he is aware that their story has corroberation.

Meantime Maggie's father is making appeals on the TV for Remy to let his daughter go, thinking or wanting others to think that Remy has kidnapped her by knifepoint.

When Jack contacts his ex-lover, Laura Sandoval, an assistant U.S. Attorney out of New Orleans, they find themselves seemingly traced. Who is the one who is betraying them? Is it Laura? Jack thinks it isn't. Maggie thinks she likely is.

Willow was her code name when she was being guarded by the secret service.

My take
I enjoyed this book a lot. The characters are well developed. There is genuine love between Maggie and Jack, though they have been out of touch for years. There is a sense of family between Jack, Maggie, and Remy, even if Maggie and her father do not get along.

I was annoyed by
I was annoyed by the nickname Naughty Marguerite for Maggie. I thought that was totally unnecessary. I would give the book 4 stars out of 4, if it were not for that. Because of that, I will give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Have you read the book or any other books by Paula Graves?
I would definitely seek out more of her books.
