To honor the release of the movie, One for the Money, which I reviewed earlier, I decided to reread the Stephanie Plum novels. I forget the details, but not the laughter.

Different than the other books
I remember trying to read this book earlier, but for whatever reason, I wasn't in the mood, so it was one I skimmed so fast, it just went right out of my head. But Visions of Sugar Plums is a fun read, once you wrap your mind around the fact that it is not a normal Stephanie Plum novel.

It is different than the other Stephanie Plum novels because it has elements of fantasy in it, or rather different elements of fantasy, the supernatural. I mean, it is a fantasy to have both Ranger and Morelli in one's life. But this novel has Diesel, the guy who magically pops into Stephanie's kitchen one day. What is he, a guy or an angel? or something altogether different?

Whatever he is, he has the ability to appear at will, and he is here to help Stephanie who is, as usual, in over her head.

And don't you know that where Stephanie is involved, so is Grandma Mazur who has a studmuffin of her own.

And along the way there are a few family crises, both funny and touching. Morelli pops in and out occasionally, but no Ranger, alas.

The story
This time Stephanie is out to bring in Santy Claws who runs a toy shop and a toy factory and is in process of hiring little people (elves) to make his toys.

Meantime someone is out to get Santy Claws. And it turns out that Santy has supernatural abilities of his own to hold this crime in check. And Diesel is there to help him, because Santy's powers are waning as he ages, and so are the powers of his enemy.

And it turns out that perhaps one other of Stephanie's family members might also have some of the supernatural.

Have you read it?
I think I originally was looking for more of a regular Stephanie Plum book, but once I got into the idea of the supernatural, I liked it, the second go-round.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

I know several people who are Fannie Flagg fans, but this is the first book I've read of hers. Two different people loaned it to me at two different times, and I finally got around to really getting into it vs. just looking through it. The second time it was loaned to me, I was told that she laughed all the way through and just loved it.

It took me a while to get into this book (obviously!) Every character has a narration voice -- that takes a bit of getting used to, but makes the book more interesting. It truly was a funny book. I suspect we'd feel this way if we were cognizant of other people's thought processes.

Flagg looks at her subjects with compassion. Their foibles are highlighted, but gently.

Imagine the consternation when a beloved older member of the community is pronounced dead, then several hours later abruptly sits up in the hospital and starts talking. The village hot line broadcasts her death immediately. Neighbors go in to straighten her house. They are all in mourning. We learn why she is so beloved, the many kindly things (and much more interesting than her daughter or son-in-law would expect) she has done over the years. We learn how she spends her time when she is dead. Throw in assorted characters: a would-be rapist; a murder; a hidden gun; a hidden body; a young man lifted out of his circumstances; the popular hair dresser; the obsessive daughter; the hospital attorney; the son-in-law who stops every day before going to work...

It's really a lovely book, one that makes you think, one that makes you smile and laugh out loud, one with a bit of melancholy, but hope for a life well lived. I enjoyed her time between death and living again.

We went to see this at the midnight show of opening night. There weren't a lot of folks there, which surprised me, but it might have been because people were sure about the casting.

If you love the book, you will love the movie. I'd see it again in a minute, and I will definitely buy it when it comes out as a DVD.

What's not to love about a movie that makes you happy, where you know the main character is going to be OK, where there is a lot of humor, and it is fun to watch!

Casting:
Let's talk casting. I wasn't at all convinced until I saw the movie. It was perfect.

I liked the idea of Katherine Heigl, but I wasn't sure if I'd like her in dark hair. Not to worry. She looked great.

Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur was not at all who I pictured. But she got me in the first minute of her first appearance on screen. Considering Grandma Mazur is a favorite character, that is saying something.

Lulu -- well, I had thought Queen Latifah, but she is too high class for the part. But Sherri Shepherd was perfect in the part, and her getups were just like Janet Evanovich describes her.

Vinnie (Patrick Fischler) was perfect.

Now Morelli (Jason O'Mara) turned out to be a good choice. There is a lot of magnetism between him and Stephanie.

And speaking of magnetism, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, turned out to be perfect. Many of us had thought of the Rock in this part, but Daniel couldn't be beat.

Ana Reeder as Connie, does a good job.

I didn't have anybody in mind for her parents, so they were OK. They don't have a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters.

If you liked the book, do yourself a favor and get on down and see the movie. You know it is a terrific franchise, and I'd like to see the other books made as movies too. This one has to sell tickets for that to happen. I'd definitely go see them.

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed an author and book, as much as I enjoyed Christie Craig's Divorced, Desperate, and Dating. This book is easily as good, if not better, than Janet Evanovich's series featuring Stephanie Plum. Seriously. If you like Stephanie Plum, you will love this book. And the good news is that it is part of a trilogy, so there is more on offer, including other books by this author.

I suppose you would call this romantic suspense, but there is so much wit and humor in it, that it crosses genres, as far as I'm concerned.

I managed to pick it up when it was offered for free on Kindle. Yippee!

Make no mistake, the sex is hot and heavy, but it is realistic. The hero and heroine do not jump into bed at the first available moment, but there is a lot of sexual tension as they determine how far they will take the relationship.

Sue Finley is a murder mystery writer. She researches how to kill her victims. Her good friend is married to a police officer, whose good friend is Jason Dodds, also a police officer. It just so happens that 4 months earlier, she and Jason had shared a spectacular kiss. He asked for her number, but he hasn't called her back.

In the meantime, she has begun to date Paul who is just odd enough to give you the willies. She is considering breaking it off.

And then she starts getting threats to kill her that are copycatting the book she has written, but is not yet published.

At first, it seems like a loathsome prank or publicity stunt, though she realizes it is not. Then it escalates into serious territory. Re-enter Jason Dodds to save the day -- and he does. He is one of the first to take the threats seriously, and he refuses to leave her until the person behind the threats is discovered. He has, what he thinks, are good reasons for not calling her after their kiss, but that goes out the window when they are in close proximity.

There really is some suspense here, but it doesn't get into the horrors of suspense mysteries, thankfully. I wanted to finish the book to know where it was going.

The story is peopled with odd characters, similar to the Stephanie Plum stories. Her mom is a character, and her grandparents keep tabs on her life. There is a lot of love, even with peoples' eccentricities.

I really enjoyed the book. I give it 4 out of 4 *, and I will look for her other books.

There's nothing better than a new Stone Barrington novel, when it works, and this one works.

I got Strategic Moves from the library. This is book # 19 in the series, count 'em.

It has the usual cast of characters
This is one reason the books are so fun. There is Stone, of course, the ex-cop, now lawyer; Dino, his friend, a cop; Elaine, who owns the restaurant they love to eat in; Lance Cabot, the CIA man; now there is Mike Eggers, who owns a security company whose late owner was killed in a mistaken identity; and there is Herbie Fisher, the irritating little man who is always in the middle of things, through no fault, ahem, of his own. Even Holly Barker makes an appearance.

Add in a few beautiful women, a couple of homicides, a man who is adept at disguises, and you have a recipe for fun.

The story
You just have to smile at the convoluted storyline...too complicated to talk about, but not too complicated to follow.

But Stone has his clients' best interests at heart, and he always manages to best the ones who would like to best him. He is loyal to his friends, and they know who they are. And he has the right ones -- not only does he have security, but he has the best wire-and-bug man in the business, even better than the CIA.

When a Mercedes falls out of the sky and a parachute is found not too far away, you just know that Barrington is somehow mixed up in it.

How about romance
Well, Stone always has some lady friend, but the action is off page, though the clever asides are not.

The Phantom Tollbooth is an adorable book. I don't know how I missed it when it first came out.

While marketed for young adults or children, it is definitely one an adult will appreciate, perhaps more than a child. It is chock full of idioms, synonyms, antonyms, and other assorted word plays. Reading it to a child would be a delight for the adult -- and one where you'd have ample opportunity to define phrases and explain why it's so clever. And the child (or adult) would pick up many (or be reminded of many) clever, clever, clever turns of phrase.

In some ways, it reminds me of the classic Half Magic.

And it's a cute story, to boot!

Anna Quinlan wrote a book report on it when she was 10 and said: "This is the best book ever."

I have to agree. I give it 5 stars out of 5 stars.

The story
Milo is a very bored young man, totally glum. Learning for him is nothing short of useless -- why would he ever need any of that information!

Ah, but he is about to receive a magic tollbooth that will take him to lands beyond where he will rescue the princesses Rhyme and Reason. Along the way he will travel in such places as: Dictionopolos and Digitopolos and meet the Mathemagician, among others.

His companions are the dog Tock (who has a clock built in) and the Humbug.

Have you read it?
The author has also collaborated on a musical score and a libretto for an opera that is performed in schools and theaters:

And he has written a number of other books that I will be looking into. One, The Dot and the Line, was made into an Academy-Award winning film.

I got mine from the library, but bought it for my Kindle too.

The story behind the story
A few weeks ago on Aromaleigh's forum, for theme week, it was my turn to suggest the week's theme. I was telling Book Girl, and she suggested having a Vampire Week, based on the movie Twilight, and the book series.

So that's what I suggested. I suggested doing a vampire look based on Twilight, using any colors, so long as their skin sparkled in sunlight, which is easy to do with Aromaleigh.

Many entered into the spirit of it, even if they hadn't heard of the book(s) or movie. That particular theme week had 1582 views and 74 responses, to date. Even Kristin, the founder of Aromaleigh, contributed a look.

And then Kristin developed three powders based on Twilight.

The Twilight DVD came out at midnight Friday night, and we were there -- in two cities! Book Girl was out of town.

Twilight Sparkle supernatural powder
This is the first one I've tried in this set of three. The glitter is very fine and shows up on my hand. On my face, it is a very sheer, sheeny look, not a glimmer look. My own mix is more sparkly, though there is more sparkle in the AL. I applied it with a FO brush.

Twilight Sparkle contains distinct shimmering iridescent glimmers. In the sunlight or under bright light, it shimmers like radiant tiny diamonds. Apply over skin that you have applied lotion to (preferably with a high SPF, of course!), the effect is even more pronounced, and the product will stay longer on your skin. Twilight Sparkle may slightly lighten your skin, but it is formulated to be suitable for many skintones, in a transparent base.

I chose to wear it in my FOTD today in honor of the DVD debut.

If you are a fan of the New Jersey bounty hunter, Stephanie Plum, you will like this newest addition to her storyline. And coming right after is the next one, which is always good, because you can't read just one.

The movie
Truthfully, I'm not too sure about the movie that will be coming out based on the series, because I have such vivid ideas of what the characters will be like, and I can't picture Grandma Mazur as Debbie Reynolds, for one.

It has the usual cast of characters
Stephanie...Mooner...Vince...Grandma Mazur...Stephanie's mom and dad...Ranger and Joe Morelli...Lulu... and more.

Then you have
A serial killer who leaves a note: this one's for Stephanie.

You also have a new guy, really a guy Stephanie knew before his divorce, who thinks he will be Stephanie's new beau -- and that is what her mother hopes too, so they are thrown together more than once. Then he gets his comeuppance, which you know is funny. He likes to cook for the whole family, and he wants to be Stephanie's cook and lover.

But she has enough on her plate, being attracted to two men, especially when Morelli's grandmother puts the hex on her -- and one that is an aphrodisiac. She can't resist Ranger in this book, or rather she lets him know that they will act on their feelings. And boy do they!

And the serial killer is getting closer, as well as more reckless.

My take
I love the humor in these books and I love the feistiness of the characters. Lulu is her usual self, as are Stephanie, her grandmother and all the rest that we are familiar with and love.

I recently tried to read another series that said it was like these books, but I couldn't plow through the first one. There just isn't anything out there like this, with beloved characters, a little scariness, and a feisty heroine and her trusty friends, lovers, sidekicks and grandma.

I give this book 3 stars out of 4.

A friend loaned me her copy of the book eat, pray, love, because she liked it so well and felt I would too. I knew by the first few pages that I wanted a copy of my own.

It took me quite a while to work my way through the book, but in that way I could savor it. It's a rare book that is so enjoyable.

Gilbert has a wonderful way with words.

And the good news is that it is being made into a movie with Julia Roberts. That should be interesting! [edited: Here is my review of the movie -- it was interesting! I am currently re-reading the book after seeing the movie.]

The book is her chronicle of searching across Italy (where she eats her way, while learning Italian), India (where she is in an Ashram searching for God, finding herself in silent devotion and in words and communion with others), and Bali (where she finds love and helps a woman buy a home.)

Along the way we see her work through the angst of her difficult divorce. She moves from a sense of no belief to profundity. It is by turns funny, touching, endearing, sad...

If you've read it, how did you like it?
And if you haven't, treat yourself.

I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

Cathy Barton's book is a sheer joy to read. The full title is a mouthful, which may be as it should be since it concerns a (non)diet Diet Book: 120 Days of God's Diet (no) Devotional (no) Restoration Routine for Plump Gals That Want to Better Themselves.

You do not have to be a plumb/chubby/fatso chick (none of these are my words, but trust me they are not used disparagingly) to enjoy this book. If you want change and transformation, no matter the subject, this book is for you. And if you need (no) would like (no) to lose weight, but it is too difficult for you to even contemplate (yes) for a multitude of reasons (yes), read the book just for the joy of it and forget that it has anything to do with (not) losing weight.

If you just want to (learn to) love yourself (for the first time ever) (more), then this book is for you. If you need to feel you are (worthy of being) loved, read it.

I recommend you order a copy today (I have no affiliation, but I must admit I know Cathy and she is as much fun, and as deep, in person as this book is. Plus our husbands were both going through very difficult times at about the same time.) Order a couple for friends. It has everything and nothing to do with weight -- how about weight of the heart? order one for you, then order for gifts when you realize what a wealth it is.

If you want to feel good and feel good about yourself, you will love this book. She is quick to admit she is no Bible scholar, but what the hey! she does a fantastic job.

She let her Bible open at random (is it really random!) to hear what God might say to her (and us.) Then she writes a short (max of 2 pages altogether) non-devotional. Well, it is a serious devotional, couched in a lot of humor, a whole lot of heart, and a mess of good ideas, written in a colloquial style that will have you in stitches while she manages to plug into your heart a whole lot of good thoughts.

The book is meant to be read and carried forward, day by day, but to tell you the truth, I just want to keep reading. I've even got my trusty pencil doing quite a bit of underlining. So my recommendation is read the whole thing; read as much as you can handle in a sitting; read some more; underline; skim the darn book; laugh your way through; then go back and do it day by day -- or re-read the whole book.

Make no mistake, she is a beautiful woman, within and without, and I love her. She is awesome!

I rate it 5***** and I'm only to page 47 of 255. Plus I'm going back to underline. I hope she writes a second book. She is also making herself available to give talks. Check her out! BTW I bought my own copy, but I'm gonna have her sign it -- and I'm going to ask her if I'm in the book anywhere. (Of course as one of the wonderful, awesome, thin [no] happy ones!)

And believe me, I want to be in her first audience. I might even invite a few friends over.
