To honor the release of the movie, One for the Money, which I reviewed earlier, I decided to reread the Stephanie Plum novels. I forget the details, but not the laughter.

Different than the other books
I remember trying to read this book earlier, but for whatever reason, I wasn't in the mood, so it was one I skimmed so fast, it just went right out of my head. But Visions of Sugar Plums is a fun read, once you wrap your mind around the fact that it is not a normal Stephanie Plum novel.

It is different than the other Stephanie Plum novels because it has elements of fantasy in it, or rather different elements of fantasy, the supernatural. I mean, it is a fantasy to have both Ranger and Morelli in one's life. But this novel has Diesel, the guy who magically pops into Stephanie's kitchen one day. What is he, a guy or an angel? or something altogether different?

Whatever he is, he has the ability to appear at will, and he is here to help Stephanie who is, as usual, in over her head.

And don't you know that where Stephanie is involved, so is Grandma Mazur who has a studmuffin of her own.

And along the way there are a few family crises, both funny and touching. Morelli pops in and out occasionally, but no Ranger, alas.

The story
This time Stephanie is out to bring in Santy Claws who runs a toy shop and a toy factory and is in process of hiring little people (elves) to make his toys.

Meantime someone is out to get Santy Claws. And it turns out that Santy has supernatural abilities of his own to hold this crime in check. And Diesel is there to help him, because Santy's powers are waning as he ages, and so are the powers of his enemy.

And it turns out that perhaps one other of Stephanie's family members might also have some of the supernatural.

Have you read it?
I think I originally was looking for more of a regular Stephanie Plum book, but once I got into the idea of the supernatural, I liked it, the second go-round.

I give it 3 out of 4 stars.

This book was offered free for Kindle as a hook to the rest of the books in the series. It is the first time I had heard of this author, her heroine, or the series, but it sounded fun.

This book is gentle, somewhat slow moving (or perhaps I just didn't want to rush through it) humorous and insightful. I highlighted quite a bit in the book.

It is a Christian story, but it is not preachy. At times you hear her prayers or her thoughts on God and life in general, and she helps one character be more inclined to visit churches (which his previous girlfriend had wanted.)

The Story
Ivy Malone is an older lady who within the first few pages loses her best friend, approximately the same age, to sudden death. She muses on life as she goes through it, much like I do, but perhaps more pithily. I enjoy hearing her humorous thoughts as she goes about her business. Her asides are sometimes laugh out loud.

She and her friend had gone out to an old cemetery, only to find that there had been vandalism. Many of the headstones were pulled or pushed over.

They go to the police, but they are overlooked and under accepted.

So Ivy vows, after her friend's death, that she will go out to the cemetery at night to watch for the vandals to return, which of course they ultimately do. She wants to solve the mystery, as well as catch them.

During the process she realizes that she has become invisible, in the sense that wherever she goes, including to the police, she is pretty much ignored for the younger people who are in the same place. She figures she can use this new found invisibility to figure out what is happening.

She is definitely braver than I!

Along the way she nearly gets killed and solves a murder. And she is courted by one man and is somewhat courted by another (or it is the development of a good friendship in elder years.)

The characters
I enjoyed the development of characters in the book -- for example, the young woman with a mystery herself or the young police officer that befriends her (and she befriends him) who does believe her. I also liked the strong friendships, for even their foibles are simply accepted.

I was sorry that a character is murdered.

My rating
I'd give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It's not terribly frightening nor gory. Ivy certainly has pluck, something I'd like to continue to cultivate in myself. She is sort of Nancy Drew, all grown up. She is a genuinely nice person in her dealings with everyone.

All the ends are neatly tied up, pretty much, which might not happen in real life, but you feel good for spending some time with Ivy.

Suzanne Brockmann writes interesting books, and this is no exception. I stumbled across one of her books a few years ago. She writes military fiction (Navy Seals) with characters you enjoy, rolled up with passion for work and each other, as well as the requisite love story, a little danger and a lot of action. I haven't read her books in any particular order, but each book concentrates more on one of the characters than another in a continuing saga of sorts.

This book is a love story about a hero and a hero. It is not heterosexual. She writes with compassion and understanding. Her son Jason is gay, she tells us in an addendum, and she lives in Massachusetts with her husband, author Ed Gaffney.

The book is set in Boston where Jules and Robin are going to be married, taking each other as life partners. Along the way, both of their lives are endangered -- Jules because of his work and Robin because he is (they are) peripherally stalked.

I wouldn't say this is the best of her books. There is less action, though what there is takes place in Afghanistan. For the most part, it is a love story. She ties present feelings and actions to past and childhood events. She makes you care for her characters' hurts, which is a skill in itself.

I know several people who are Fannie Flagg fans, but this is the first book I've read of hers. Two different people loaned it to me at two different times, and I finally got around to really getting into it vs. just looking through it. The second time it was loaned to me, I was told that she laughed all the way through and just loved it.

It took me a while to get into this book (obviously!) Every character has a narration voice -- that takes a bit of getting used to, but makes the book more interesting. It truly was a funny book. I suspect we'd feel this way if we were cognizant of other people's thought processes.

Flagg looks at her subjects with compassion. Their foibles are highlighted, but gently.

Imagine the consternation when a beloved older member of the community is pronounced dead, then several hours later abruptly sits up in the hospital and starts talking. The village hot line broadcasts her death immediately. Neighbors go in to straighten her house. They are all in mourning. We learn why she is so beloved, the many kindly things (and much more interesting than her daughter or son-in-law would expect) she has done over the years. We learn how she spends her time when she is dead. Throw in assorted characters: a would-be rapist; a murder; a hidden gun; a hidden body; a young man lifted out of his circumstances; the popular hair dresser; the obsessive daughter; the hospital attorney; the son-in-law who stops every day before going to work...

It's really a lovely book, one that makes you think, one that makes you smile and laugh out loud, one with a bit of melancholy, but hope for a life well lived. I enjoyed her time between death and living again.

We went to see this at the midnight show of opening night. There weren't a lot of folks there, which surprised me, but it might have been because people were sure about the casting.

If you love the book, you will love the movie. I'd see it again in a minute, and I will definitely buy it when it comes out as a DVD.

What's not to love about a movie that makes you happy, where you know the main character is going to be OK, where there is a lot of humor, and it is fun to watch!

Casting:
Let's talk casting. I wasn't at all convinced until I saw the movie. It was perfect.

I liked the idea of Katherine Heigl, but I wasn't sure if I'd like her in dark hair. Not to worry. She looked great.

Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur was not at all who I pictured. But she got me in the first minute of her first appearance on screen. Considering Grandma Mazur is a favorite character, that is saying something.

Lulu -- well, I had thought Queen Latifah, but she is too high class for the part. But Sherri Shepherd was perfect in the part, and her getups were just like Janet Evanovich describes her.

Vinnie (Patrick Fischler) was perfect.

Now Morelli (Jason O'Mara) turned out to be a good choice. There is a lot of magnetism between him and Stephanie.

And speaking of magnetism, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, turned out to be perfect. Many of us had thought of the Rock in this part, but Daniel couldn't be beat.

Ana Reeder as Connie, does a good job.

I didn't have anybody in mind for her parents, so they were OK. They don't have a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters.

If you liked the book, do yourself a favor and get on down and see the movie. You know it is a terrific franchise, and I'd like to see the other books made as movies too. This one has to sell tickets for that to happen. I'd definitely go see them.

Suzanne Brockman writes several series. This book is from her Troubleshooter's series, stories of US Navy Seal Team Sixteen. Each book details the story of another member of the team, as well as intertwines the characters more and more.

I'm not sure if this is the first book, but it's a good place to start. I have liked some of the stories more than others, but I like the concept.

I picked this book up again recently and found myself rereading it, something I rarely do.

You can call these romance books with a twist. The twist is, of course, saving the day.

In this book, various voices narrate the action. I particularly liked this. It was believable and not just a writing device. It actually allowed the reader to catch glimpses of the inner persons. And woven through the book are the narrations of a romance and heroic actions during WWII in France. These actions have direct bearing on the circumstances in the book.

There is to be a ceremony honoring the hero of Baldwin's Bridge (Tom's uncle -- and until this point in time Tom never knew of the actions of his uncle in OSS) -- and his uncle plans to give an interview to a reporter detailing the real hero (Kelly's father.)

The characters rise to the occasion, get the bad guy(s), save the day, fall in love -- what more could you want from a story.

And the romance develops over a slow pace -- the entire book -- with a lot of stream of consciousness and flirting and some serious, but not crude, sex.

Tom has been told that his kind of head injury may result in paranoia. And he has bad headaches throughout the book.

When he first catches a glimpse of the man he strongly believes is the Merchant, he recognizes the odd way he puts his backpack on his shoulders. He has altered his appearance some, if indeed it is the Merchant. Tom feels it is his duty to report this sighting, but it is not well received. No legitimate source of intel has anything, but the fact that it is believed the Merchant died of his injuries in the last encounter.

Tom continues to catch glimpses of him -- as well as the tattoo that members of the Merchant's team use to identify themselves.

But has he seen him or hasn't he? Does he just imagine there is danger when there is not? Even though paranoia usually means thinking that only oneself is in danger, whereas here he sees the possibility of others' being in danger, he must decide if he should pursue following this lead, even if it means he could be medically discharged from the Seals.

He calls in as many of his trusted team as he can, making them know it is not an order, that they are acting on their own time (vacation.) Good thing he did too.

The action gets very fast paced at the end where they must find the bomb and save the day.

Which is your favorite? This is one of mine. I kept putting it down so as to savor the finish.

I think respite care begins with ourselves. We have to know (or seek to know) what we need, then take some steps, even baby steps, to find space in our lives for respite. We need to ask and let others know, if we need it.

Respite care is talked about in the adoption community, for some children have needs (or problems) greater than one or two parents could fulfill or even handle. It can be very tricky finding any kind of care, and it sometimes involves residential care for the child/teen.

Respite care is likely also talked about in other communities of folks dealing with specific health issues or other.

Of course, there are other kinds of caregiving and caregivers, but the bulk of caregiving still falls on a woman's shoulders, whether she is caring for her or her spouse's parents, for a child, a house, or for her husband.

The need to call 911 can be life defining whether it involves something as 'simple' as lift support or as complex as emergency care or transport.

A friend writes:

I guess we don't really understand how much we need people until there's a crisis. Without the health issues [that some face with their husbands], I'm having the same feelings about my husband. I don't think I've ever been so solicitous or considerate of him as I've been these last two months since he took this new job.

Meanwhile, I think that we get caught up in the non-reality of a situation and don't really grok what exactly is going on. That was true on the street in NYC when I almost lost our son while my husband went to get the wheelchair. We didn't seem to have much of a clue. I think that could be said for another friend and her son, that the surreal-ness of the experience at the end there had so overwhelmed them, created a disbelief and an inability to actually SEE what was going on. I think calling 911, for the average person, is an act of huge significance. We are taught to be so polite and to ask for little, not to take up too much space.

I'm currently reading Inner Peace for Busy Women by Joan Borysenko. I'm a little put off by the cutsy green ink, but I like what she writes about, and it is another book that I will own.

I was surprised to find a chapter on caregiving. Again, I borrowed this book from the library, as I'm reading several of her books having just 'found' her as an author.

She writes:

On a trip to India in the 1980s, I spent a few weeks in a small village, where a schizophrenic woman, talking to herself continually with great agitation, lived under a large banyan tree. Different villagers visited her every few hours, brought food, and cared for all her needs. But most of us no longer live in extended families of close-knit communities where such care is common. We live neither in the welcoming shelter of a banyan tree, nor in the warm embrace of one another. Those who do reap significant benefits as far as health and peace of mind are concerned. p 141

I think especially this phrase stood out to me: warm embrace of one another. I suspect many of our homeless have been left to fend for themselves now that they have been de-institutionalized, but there wasn't another embrace for them, nor a way to be sure they were sound enough to care for themselves wisely.

Contrast the scene in the Indian village with a trip my then 11 year old daughter and I took to Paris about 10 years ago. We were surprised to find in the heat of summer, in a new hotel, there was no air conditioning. Our first room was in the back among sheltering trees and whether it was hot or not, the trees made the heat bearable. Through the night there was a woman who yelled continually, but there was no traffic noise. It was impossible to sleep. At some point, a man yelled out the French equivalent of SHUT UP! The next day we moved to the front of the hotel, no trees, with tremendous road noise right up until about 3 am when it quieted down until about 5 am, and not a breath of air, but the sounds of the traffic muffled any noises she was making. I saw her on the street at one point later in the day. I think I prayed for her just about the whole night.

We could learn a lot from societies such as India. How many of us would long for a banyan tree, for the warm embrace of another to help us get through?

Take the time to figure out, if you can, what would nurture you, if you are care giving. Often it comes in unexpected ways, if we are open to it.

He enables care to be given that is not a burden.
He brings the care I need so I have intercede.
Both care-giver and care-receiver are in His plan.

O Lord, I give this care to You, for I know
that You are both my care-taker and my care-giver.
With You, I know that my burden is easy, for You are there.
Help me to appreciate my neighbor: each one to know as he is known.
Help me to see myself as You are seeing: forever in the care that You have shown.

This is the 4th book in the T-FLAC series.

I have also reviewed the first (Kiss and Tell) and second books (Hide and Seek).

The hero
In too Deep follows the story of Michael Wright, the second of the three Wright brothers. When the story opens, he is a changed man. No longer a Navy Seal, because he lost one eye on his last assignment, he now fights his fear of the water. All he wants to do is revenge the death of Hugo, his partner.

As luck would have it, he meets the daughter of his arch-enemy. He rescues her from certain death when the yacht she is on explodes.

Tally Cruise has come to the same island to meet her father, having been invited there. Michael expects he will use her to get to her father, but he underestimates Tally herself.

The heroine
Tally has not had a happy childhood, traipsing all over the world in search of her illusive father at the whim of her mother. She is fighting her own demons. Not as beautiful as her mother, never really having the love of her father, extremely afraid of the dark ...

Like the other Adair females, she is strong and feisty, fighting for her life on more than one occasion and fighting for Michael's life, once she knows he is trustworthy.

Flashbacks
Michael's flashbacks eventually reveal to us the accident that took his eye. Tally's one flashback reveals to her and to us why she is afraid of the dark.

Tally's father
SOB doesn't begin to describe him. He doesn't show up on the scene until the last few pages. One particular act of murder on his part is particularly shocking and grim, even if you don't much like the one he kills.

Figuring it all out
It doesn't take long to figure out that Tally is slated for murder. The reader figures it out, at least I did, before she or Michael do. The question is, by whom?

The sex
Definitely there. The love story is believable.

My take
There is violence in this book. The baddies get theirs, which doesn't hurt the reader a bit. You practically cheer. Tally is roughed up more than once, but more than holds her own. She gives as good as she gets, sometimes almost comically. Though you can almost feel her palpable fear, you also see how strong she is not to give in to it. The book is not as dark as the second book, thankfully, or I couldn't keep reading the series.

If I understand correctly, this book is a prequel to 3 others written by the same author. It was written first, but not published until later, and consequently it was reworked to be a different book than first conceived.

The story:
Michael Taylor is in a nightmare. His wife was murdered the night before, and they are asking him for a statement. They were finalizing a brutal and expensive divorce, and yes, he could have killed her more than once, but he didn't. And he wouldn't have.

His only hope is Roxann, who now runs the newspaper her father once owned.

They were once together, and Roxann still has feelings, even love, but can she trust him? and did he do it? And if he didn't, who did, and are they safe?

Meantime, Roxann has problems of her own, with sabotage at the newspaper, and more. She sometimes takes risks that I wouldn't take, solitary runs, for example.

My take:
I really liked this book. The characters are believable and well developed. Their love story takes up where it left off, but with a lot of events under the bridge, with remorse and forgiveness, and sorrow for lost years, and puzzlement over why Michael would marry a woman so clearly not right for him, one who would fling that love in his face until it no longer existed, one who would have multiple affairs.

And yes, risking trust -- and trust is sometimes a risk and a leap of faith.

The desire and attraction are there, but they do not jump into bed. Yet when they do, it is entirely expected and feels right.

My rating:
I give it at least a 4 star, maybe a 4.5. And I would definitely read more in this series. There were enough possibilities for the murder and for the sabotage and for other events that it kept me guessing pretty much until close to the end. I had a pretty good idea, but resisted my usual of skipping to the end to see whodunit or howitends.

Don't knock ebooks if you haven't tried them. Convenience is the number one reason: easy to carry; easy to obtain a new book; easy to read; easy... easy... easy...

Which one?
The biggest decision you will have to make, if you don't own one, is which one is right for you. And you can't go wrong with a Kindle.

The rest have other drawing cards, such as Sony which will allow you to download library ebooks. But it's a moot point, if your library doesn't have any. And remember an elibrarybook is similar to taking out a (old-fashioned) paper book. The library only has so many copies and you have a limited time to check them out. There might even be a waiting list for new books.

What's the trend?
The current trend is to more and more ebooks and ereaders. And the market isn't saturated by any means.

Who's gonna win?
The old west mentality of writers and publishers and agents hacking their way to new agreements, cutting out the middle (wo)men, is well and alive. Not to mention Amazon is giving larger percentages to writers for ebooks sold than they currently receive for other modes of publishing.

Tim Dorsey who writes the best selling books about Serge and his Florida haunts, as well as his craziness, has rewritten all his contracts to include ebooks. Whereas in times past, he saw only a few ebook sales, he has seen a couple of formats sold a couple of thousand. He says it is moving up an exponential curve. But he still continues to publish through his usual channels because they are the ones who supported him in the beginning.

Do writers really want to miss out on this? I doubt it...

In June J. A. Konrath, mystery writer, earned $12,000 from Kindle alone. And he's chosen to publish only on Kindle, ones that were rejected by print publishers, and he is making serious bucks, which he says will only increase. And this is money he is earning on previously published works, so he is picking up new business without equal time expended.
