This book was offered free for Kindle as a hook to the rest of the books in the series. It is the first time I had heard of this author, her heroine, or the series, but it sounded fun.

This book is gentle, somewhat slow moving (or perhaps I just didn't want to rush through it) humorous and insightful. I highlighted quite a bit in the book.

It is a Christian story, but it is not preachy. At times you hear her prayers or her thoughts on God and life in general, and she helps one character be more inclined to visit churches (which his previous girlfriend had wanted.)

The Story
Ivy Malone is an older lady who within the first few pages loses her best friend, approximately the same age, to sudden death. She muses on life as she goes through it, much like I do, but perhaps more pithily. I enjoy hearing her humorous thoughts as she goes about her business. Her asides are sometimes laugh out loud.

She and her friend had gone out to an old cemetery, only to find that there had been vandalism. Many of the headstones were pulled or pushed over.

They go to the police, but they are overlooked and under accepted.

So Ivy vows, after her friend's death, that she will go out to the cemetery at night to watch for the vandals to return, which of course they ultimately do. She wants to solve the mystery, as well as catch them.

During the process she realizes that she has become invisible, in the sense that wherever she goes, including to the police, she is pretty much ignored for the younger people who are in the same place. She figures she can use this new found invisibility to figure out what is happening.

She is definitely braver than I!

Along the way she nearly gets killed and solves a murder. And she is courted by one man and is somewhat courted by another (or it is the development of a good friendship in elder years.)

The characters
I enjoyed the development of characters in the book -- for example, the young woman with a mystery herself or the young police officer that befriends her (and she befriends him) who does believe her. I also liked the strong friendships, for even their foibles are simply accepted.

I was sorry that a character is murdered.

My rating
I'd give this book 3 out of 4 stars. It's not terribly frightening nor gory. Ivy certainly has pluck, something I'd like to continue to cultivate in myself. She is sort of Nancy Drew, all grown up. She is a genuinely nice person in her dealings with everyone.

All the ends are neatly tied up, pretty much, which might not happen in real life, but you feel good for spending some time with Ivy.

We went to see this at the midnight show of opening night. There weren't a lot of folks there, which surprised me, but it might have been because people were sure about the casting.

If you love the book, you will love the movie. I'd see it again in a minute, and I will definitely buy it when it comes out as a DVD.

What's not to love about a movie that makes you happy, where you know the main character is going to be OK, where there is a lot of humor, and it is fun to watch!

Casting:
Let's talk casting. I wasn't at all convinced until I saw the movie. It was perfect.

I liked the idea of Katherine Heigl, but I wasn't sure if I'd like her in dark hair. Not to worry. She looked great.

Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Mazur was not at all who I pictured. But she got me in the first minute of her first appearance on screen. Considering Grandma Mazur is a favorite character, that is saying something.

Lulu -- well, I had thought Queen Latifah, but she is too high class for the part. But Sherri Shepherd was perfect in the part, and her getups were just like Janet Evanovich describes her.

Vinnie (Patrick Fischler) was perfect.

Now Morelli (Jason O'Mara) turned out to be a good choice. There is a lot of magnetism between him and Stephanie.

And speaking of magnetism, Daniel Sunjata as Ranger, turned out to be perfect. Many of us had thought of the Rock in this part, but Daniel couldn't be beat.

Ana Reeder as Connie, does a good job.

I didn't have anybody in mind for her parents, so they were OK. They don't have a lot of screen time compared to some of the other characters.

If you liked the book, do yourself a favor and get on down and see the movie. You know it is a terrific franchise, and I'd like to see the other books made as movies too. This one has to sell tickets for that to happen. I'd definitely go see them.

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed an author and book, as much as I enjoyed Christie Craig's Divorced, Desperate, and Dating. This book is easily as good, if not better, than Janet Evanovich's series featuring Stephanie Plum. Seriously. If you like Stephanie Plum, you will love this book. And the good news is that it is part of a trilogy, so there is more on offer, including other books by this author.

I suppose you would call this romantic suspense, but there is so much wit and humor in it, that it crosses genres, as far as I'm concerned.

I managed to pick it up when it was offered for free on Kindle. Yippee!

Make no mistake, the sex is hot and heavy, but it is realistic. The hero and heroine do not jump into bed at the first available moment, but there is a lot of sexual tension as they determine how far they will take the relationship.

Sue Finley is a murder mystery writer. She researches how to kill her victims. Her good friend is married to a police officer, whose good friend is Jason Dodds, also a police officer. It just so happens that 4 months earlier, she and Jason had shared a spectacular kiss. He asked for her number, but he hasn't called her back.

In the meantime, she has begun to date Paul who is just odd enough to give you the willies. She is considering breaking it off.

And then she starts getting threats to kill her that are copycatting the book she has written, but is not yet published.

At first, it seems like a loathsome prank or publicity stunt, though she realizes it is not. Then it escalates into serious territory. Re-enter Jason Dodds to save the day -- and he does. He is one of the first to take the threats seriously, and he refuses to leave her until the person behind the threats is discovered. He has, what he thinks, are good reasons for not calling her after their kiss, but that goes out the window when they are in close proximity.

There really is some suspense here, but it doesn't get into the horrors of suspense mysteries, thankfully. I wanted to finish the book to know where it was going.

The story is peopled with odd characters, similar to the Stephanie Plum stories. Her mom is a character, and her grandparents keep tabs on her life. There is a lot of love, even with peoples' eccentricities.

I really enjoyed the book. I give it 4 out of 4 *, and I will look for her other books.

Because I enjoyed Tess Hudson's Double Down so well, I wanted to read this one. If you remember, Double Down was a romance about a young woman overcoming her addiction to gambling. There were some darker images in it involving uncovering a mystery about drugging a football player (her new romance) in order to predict a game.

I don't know what I expected from Invisible Girl. Perhaps it was something psychological about a teen? It was not what I expected.

Invisible Girl's prologue starts in the middle of the story. It unfolds in flashbacks to Vietnam and the Vietnam War, not chronological, superimposed on present day. It is very well written. I finished it pretty much in one sitting. I couldn't put it down.

I think Hudson captures the time of the war, as well as the feeling that there are a lot of things we will never know about or that are deliberately hidden from us. She tells us that she was befriended by a Vietnam-era veteran who taught her about writing, art, and faith and showed her a side of the war she hadn't glimpsed in the news broadcasts from her childhood.

She uses that to good advantage here. I cannot check her facts, but I can attest that she captures the feel of that time of war perfectly. And the feel of many of the returning soldiers.

She moves effortlessly from the battlefield to deep love; from rape to the babylift; from the soldiers to the highest echelons of politics and a powerful family; from the family of soldiers to the family of one of them; from the harshest of betrayals to the depths of trust and love. Along the way she mingles Catholicism and Buddhism, as Maggie's mother covers all the bases to protect her family. She succeeds in a way not foreseen, including her own death and the solving of a puzzle from the past wherein only bits of the puzzle are held by individuals in order to afford protection to her children.

I find myself thinking if only, if only she had taken others into her confidence, others that loved her, she would be alive and reunited with her daughter.

For those who are touched by the Vietnam babylift, this book offers a small insight into the pain corruption adds to adoption. At the same time, the woman who was adopted as a baby was deeply loved by her adoptive mother (and loved her too.) There is also reunion of the half-siblings.

Additionally, it was interesting to me how the young Vietnamese woman who gave birth after being raped by an American soldier named her daughter Tam, which means heart. She felt that when she prayed to Buddha, he conceived this child through her heart on her own, not through rape. I don't know how realistic this is, but it was very touching to me. Having biological (and adopted) children of my own, I know how deep is the mother love, and how it is very often our heart.

I give it a 5.

This is the first book I've read by Qiu Xiaolong, though he's written a number of other books. I chose to read this book because the cover jumped out at me from the library -- a beautiful Chinese woman, drawn from just above the mouth, rising over a city (Shanghai) -- and because of the Chinese subject matter.

This is the fifth book in the Chief Inspector Chen series, according to Qui Xiaolong's website, though he has written other books, including translations of poetry. I found I could easily pick up the stories with this book, then read the others.

He dedicates this book to his elder brother, Xiaowei --

but for luck, what happened to him during the Cultural Revolution could have happened to me.

I am privileged to know someone who was caught up in the Cultural Revolution, so this book had a secondary appeal to me.

In a way, this sets the stage for the book which moves from just before the Cultural Revolution up to the present. The book is interspersed with much Chinese poetry, heady insights into the Cultural Revolution and its costs to Chinese society, Shanghai history and Chinese culture (including the concept of 'face' as it plays out in the story.) It also has a couple of scenes of cruelty to animals in cooking (also befitting the story.)

Chief Inspector Chen has decided to take a vacation that coincides, fortuitously, with his being asked to investigate a corruption case that is going to court. He can't directly say no, but he can use this time to take a literature course wherein he has to write a paper.

He doesn't appear a lot in the first half of the book. Instead we meet the other characters, including the lawyer in the corruption case, officials, his counterpart in the force who is taking over for him while he is gone and this man's wife who is interested in helping her husband solve the case. (Women play pivotal roles in this story.) But like a fox, he solves the case in a slow and steady way, using love poems along the way.

If you are interested in learning more about Chinese culture, this series would be for you.

Qiu Xiaolong was born in Shanghai, but now lives in St. Louis, MO. A poet and translator, he has an MA and PhD from Washington University.

The book has a feel of being translated from Chinese. By this, I mean that it is easy to slip into the world of China, because the choice of words or phrases is a bit different than a native American English speaker would choose. I'm not sure this is a deliberate literary ploy or if we are just blessed because of who is writing it.

I felt the book was as valuable for what it says about China both literally and through the story and the interactions of the characters as it was for the actual story.

If you have a Chinese child or a heart for China, you should not miss this book. It is not always easy to read (such as the scenes of cruelty in cooking and the fact that it has a feel of being translated and because you'd like to remember the cultural references) but it is very worthwhile.

I look forward to reading his other books. Have you read it?

I really enjoyed this book! I think it would make a terrific movie.

The Story
The Hope Diamond is going to be stolen by a pair of thieves, brothers, who have stolen many paintings and jewels, brazenly, for the Collectors. Their liason is the Broker.

Woven throughout the modern day story are three historical stories that follow owning the Hope Diamond, which is believed to bring a curse to anyone who owns it, because it was originally said to be the eye of a statue of a Hindu god. We see the first owner who buys it in India to resell; later we see the king of France; still later, we see a modern socialite who owns it (and wears it, which seems almost impossible nowadays.)

Interwoven is a story of Christian faith, but it is not foremost, yet it has depth. It is not your usual faith story.

The Characters
Alex and Isaac Weld are the brothers who are thieves. Alex is the lighter of the two, the one that gets women to fall for him in order to ingratiate himself with them and get information. He loves them and leaves them. Isaac is the darker and harder of the two, able to scale rock surfaces, walk a tightrope, and etc. Alex really doesn't have the taste for it any more.

Alex certainly does not expect to fall in love with his next mark.

Abby Mitchell, a Smithsonian Director, has her eye on the diamond, literally visiting it hundreds of times. She is estranged from her father, but desires his love and acceptance. She is drawn to the beauty of the church across from her apartment and likes to see the light rise in it in the mornings. She was present when the brothers stole a number of paintings at another museum, but she doesn't recognize them.

Then there are the husband and wife team who love Abby as a daughter and are Interpol.

What happens
We know something is going down. There are plenty of clues along the way. At least one secret is revealed about 3/4 of the way through the book, though we might have guessed it.

Abby wears the diamond for a fund raiser -- and it is stolen right off her neck. She is subsequently fired for this.

How they track the diamond down and save the day -- and a few other characters along the way, along with other secrets is part of the fun.

There is some violence and some threat of violence, but it never gets to the point of gruesomeness.

This is the diamond's story -- as well as a developing love story.

Have you read it?

I give it 5 ***** out of 5*****. As I said, I think it would make a terrific movie.

Handbags and Homicide is a Haley Randolph Mystery.

If you like Stephanie Plum, you will love Haley Randolph, with a cast of characters as quirky and loveable as the SP books, what's not to love!

I knew this was going to be a good book, when I laughed my way through the first chapter. And, of course, since retail is in my blood, it was even funnier.

Haley Randolph is in trouble, big time. She is a purse aficionado, and she knows her ins and outs of handbags. Her mother has a trust fund, but Haley wants to make it on her own. And it necessitates a lot of cash because she can't resist a good multi-$100 handbag, for every outfit.

First, she gets a job through connections to a tony law firm -- then is let go under suspicion.

At the same time she has a second job working retail at Holt's Department Store, a store whose merchandise she doesn't like. It's a hoot to see how she manages to 'work' in all the areas of the store, not get anything done, yet do more than others who actually work.

Then she finds a dead body in the stock room, and she is a suspect.

It's up to her to clear her name on both counts.

Along the way, she picks up some friends -- and some purses. She helps customers put together outfits that are actually wearable.

Her stream of consciousness is a hoot.

There is very little romance in it, less than in a SP book, but there are similarities in the number of men interested in her. She has an almost-boyfriend.

In my head I kept hearing the voice of Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood in Confessions of a Shopaholic.

If you want a book to make you laugh, this is it. I give it 5*.

And for those of you who like a good series, the second book is already out:

PURSES AND POISON, the second book in the series, finds Haley still working at Holt’s Department Store. When her sort-of boyfriend Ty Cameron’s ex-lover is poisoned and suspicion falls on both Haley and her mom, Haley launches her own investigation. From the L.A. club scene, to the Fashion District, to the elegant Biltmore Hotel, Haley must find a way to catch a murderer, get the guy, and find the purse of her dreams.

And a third:

Howell also writes historical romance novels under the pen name Judith Stacy. She’s has 23 other books and almost 3 million readers worldwide. So it's a good bet we can expect more from her, in this series too. This is the first book I've read of hers, but it won't be my last.

While perusing the new book section of our local library, I came across a new (to me) author/book series by Felicia Donovan The Black Widow Agency (Black Widow Agency Mysteries).

In a way, it reminds me of The First Wives Club, but it has the added twist of being a mystery series.

The main characters who make up the agency are all interesting and diverse. Each of them has a back story, but we don't get the full story on at least one of them. The author is a recognized expert in the field of law enforcement techniques including the recovery of computer files, enhancement of photos, assisting the FBI, and providing technical advice about cyber crimes. She makes use of her background and knowledge in the book. I'm not always sure if it is currently possible or soon-to-be possible. Nevertheless, I found it entertaining and informational.

Crossfire is another in a long string of hits about horse racing that Dick Francis has written. I hadn't realized that over the last 40 years his son had helped in research for many of the novels and that since 2006 Felix had been taking a more significant role in the writing. I was sorry to learn that Dick died in February 2010. I got the book from the library.

What I like about these books is that they are not gruesome the way so many mysteries tend to be today. And of course, horse racing is always the hook which makes them different. This one has the added measure of the hero being injured in Afghanistan.

This is one of the best in the series. I rate it 5***** out of 5.

The Story
Prologue: Captain Thomas Forsyth is injured by an IED in Afghanistan. He loses a foot -- really more than a foot, basically to 7 inches below his knee. Likely his former life is over.

4 mos later: The action starts as Forsyth is discharged from National Health Service [I thought this might be an unreasonable time frame, to walk out with an artificial leg, physically healed.] He has 6 mos leave to figure out the direction of his life. And the army is all he has ever known.

And where should he go? He ends up going to his childhood home in Lambourn, where he is not welcome. His mother and step-father do not welcome him with open arms. She is a race-horse trainer, and according to her head man, odd things are going on. Horses lose that should not be losing.

Come to find out his mother is being black-mailed for unpaid back taxes. And yes, races are being thrown -- but by whom and what to do about it. And as Forsyth begins to untangle the mess, he will need all his wits about him to survive, especially when someone tries to kill him.

Interspersed with the action are tidbits from military strategies -- save yourself, don't depend on anyone else, for example, which comes in handy when Forsyth finds himself left to die, trussed up to a wall.

Of course, you know he will get free. How he does it is itself interesting, especially since they took his artificial leg, so he is standing on one leg, with his arms above his head.

And later, along the way, he saves his mother when she is kidnapped.

The characters
Forsyth and his family; the head lad (who really acts as assistant trainer); a childhood friend, now married to a much older man; a couple of weasely accountants who scheme to steal (and a hedge fund gone wrong)...

Forsyth's mother, while appearing to be strong (very unlikeable, not only in how she treats her son, but in how she treats others), is actually weak. Perhaps she exudes strength so people don't know how weak she really is. Like a bully, she moves through the book. Though, in her favor, her husband loves her and so does Forsyth, whether he would express it like that or not.

Action, inward and outward
There is a lot of action in the book, starting out with the battlefield scene in the first pages, through the actions Forsyth takes to find the culprits and stay ahead of being killed, helping not only his mother.

The inward action is more complex and involves his coming to terms with where his injury has left him. He is honest in his feelings, but never whiney. And he is thrown into action almost from the beginning. We learn how he gets around without crutches (he never wanted to use them) without his artificial leg. We learn how he puts it on and other aspects that seem true to story. He speaks of phantom pain; swelling in the stump when he has walked too much; other aspects of his time in the hospital; feeling the leg is foreign -- and being intensely grateful for it after he extricates himself from the wall.

As I said earlier, I'm not sure how realistic it is that he is as far along in his physical recovery as he is in 4 mos. I will ask a friend who is far more knowledgeable than I. Perhaps he will comment.

The book has several dedications, including one for the British armed forces who have lost a limb in Afghanistan, so there must have been several. Do we half know what we should be grateful for?

Saving Grace by Norah Wilson is another perfect book from this author. Guarding Suzannah is the other one of hers that I have reviewed. Both are in her Serve and Protect series, available from Smashwords.

Full disclosure: I was given a pdf file for review. It is available in many formats, including mobi for Kindle.

My rating
I rate this 5* out of 5*. They just don't get any better than this. There is nothing that I would change in it. It is one of my favorite genres to read, romantic suspense. And it has the perfect mix of romance and suspense, without getting gruesome in any details, though there is some violence. And the romance aspects are well done. There is always love.

The Story
The story opens with Police Detective Ray Morgan drinking himself into a stupor. His wife Grace left him for another man. She told him that night, then took off. But a phone call from John Quigley (the hero from Saving Suzannah) rouses him (barely) from his anger and self-pity. Grace has had a serious accident. It's a wonder she is alive. She has a serious concussion, with gaps in her memory. She has basically lost a week's worth of memory. She doesn't remember leaving Ray; she doesn't remember another man; and her doctor tells Ray he is not to tell her.

Meantime Quig tells him to take 2 weeks off to get his marriage straight, though Quig doesn't know any of the details. That is just about the last thing Ray wants to do. He is still in love with his wife.

The plot thickens when Grace realizes she no longer has her job as a reporter. And there is a chunk of cash. Then the bullets start to fly, and she and Ray have to use their wits to survive, especially since internal investigations thinks Ray enticed another officer to the bullets.

What I liked
I really did like it all. There was a perfect mix of romance and suspense.

I liked the relationship between Ray and Grace. Ray learns how much he had neglected his wife, unwittingly, and that she wants more from their marriage. I was glad Quig knew Ray wouldn't have gone rogue, so he helps Ray at a crucial point. I loved Grace's strength and her desire to gain back her memories no matter what.

I liked that there wasn't gratuitous violence, and there were no deaths.
