I was thinking just now that it applies to all of life.
We all need someone on the home front, or otherwise, who will block society's erosion of our sense of competence, so that we do not live as if the world's (sometimes) unfair portrait of ourselves were true.
We all need someone to cheer us on and send us back into the ring...
