Blocking society’s erosion of competence

Julius Segal (educator): Children often have a desperate need on the home front for a defender who will block society’s erosion of their sense of competence, who will keep them from beginning to live as if the world’s unfair portrait of them were true.

This is one of my all time favorite quotes.

I was thinking just now that it applies to all of life.

We all need someone on the home front, or otherwise, who will block society’s erosion of our sense of competence, so that we do not live as if the world’s (sometimes) unfair portrait of ourselves were true.

We all need someone to cheer us on and send us back into the ring…
