Making study and learning a habit

This came across my computer from Insight of the Day today:

I believe people should study a little bit every day. It should become habitual, like brushing your teeth, combing your hair, having a shower or getting dressed. Study the mind, the laws of the universe and paradigms. There's enough information on those subjects to keep a person studying forever. Bob Proctor

Because I like to learn about new things, I don't think of it as a habit. I laugh and say once I've learned one new thing each day, I can go to sleep.

Recently I read the book Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment. He teaches a very popular class in this. One of his interesting points is to make anything you like, that makes you happy, a habit, schedule it in. Evidently making something a habit means it actually gets into your life on a regular basis. And it takes upwards of a month to make something new a habit.

I really need to get back to the habit of Curves!

I count myself as a generally happy person (when all the chemicals are working properly). And I make a daily habit of snuggles with the furballs, watching the miracle of weeds growing in the backyard and surrounding myself with color. I used to run regularly — something that made me really happy — I wasn’t fast, but I was training for a half-marathon and then my pesky hip labrum snapped like a stale rubber band — and in an instant I had debilitating osteoarthritis (though it took Kaiser many, many months to figure this out). But it took away my running, my physical outlet. The elliptical machine is not the same. But now I have found a gym (in my membership group) that has a heated pool. And it’s bliss! Cold water makes my muscles seize up, but the warm water lets me swim or water-jog with a great range of motion. It’s like running again. Except there’s no music and i have to share the space…. but it’s good, it’s really good.

I need to start reading more. Since my eyesight started changing, I got out of the habit of reading since reading caused strain which made me sleepy. I have glasses now, but the reading habit needs to be worked on….

I think most of us have the idea that habits are negative, but being regular about the things that make us happy — or who we are — is a good thing.

I loved the Thalassotherapy pool on the boat — it is heated salt water with areas of bubbly and areas of large faucets with either non-pulsing water or water that pulsed that would flow over your head and/or shoulders. It was heaven! I’d love to find something like that here.
