I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree…
…only God can make a tree.
~Joyce Kilmer, “Trees,” 1914The trees are God’s great alphabet:
With them He writes in shining green
Across the world His thoughts serene.
~Leonora SpeyerI never saw a discontented tree. They grip the ground as though they liked it, and though fast rooted they travel about as far as we do. They go wandering forth in all directions with every wind, going and coming like ourselves, traveling with us around the sun two million miles a day, and through space heaven knows how fast and far! ~John Muir
God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools. ~John Muir
I like trees because they seem more resigned to the way they have to live than other things do. ~Willa Cather, 1913
A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease. Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fiber thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples, and the more they are cut down and hewn into cathedrals and churches, the farther off and dimmer seems the Lord himself. ~John Muir
A seed hidden in the heart of an apple is an orchard invisible. ~Welsh Proverb
For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver. ~Martin Luther
I love trees. Where I live, trees are in short supply unless they are palms or pines. I miss the trees of my childhood — the oaks and elms, maples and birches, the lilacs, apples and crab apples. I miss the acorns and the little flutterbyes that we would whistle with. I miss jumping in the leaves and the scents from burning them, when it was still allowed.
Trees make me happy — and especially in a storm with rain and wind. There is nothing like the sound of trees as wind ruffles their leaves or the sight of trees silhouetted against the sky.
I like all seasons of trees, though we have only one season here. I love to see trees with no leaves…I love the looks of a good ice storm dusting the trees with diamonds…I love the archway trees form when they cover the road above me with dense and shadowy foliage, as if I were in a cathedral…
I love to sit and look at trees. It refreshes my spirit and comforts my soul. One of my favorite vacation spots looked out over a North Carolina forest. I didn’t have to be busy or doing anything. I just needed a book by a window to feel refreshed.
Native Americans sometimes called trees ’standing people.’ I like that.
How about you? do trees speak to your spirit?
Karin
