Rumors and other negatives

It’s hard to keep yourself above rumors when they directly affect your life.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to distance yourself from the rumor mill(s) in order to survive.

Rumors are rife right now in Chinese adoption — and for good reason, since referrals have slowed down to a crawl.

The fact that some referrals are coming out is at least a good sign. While we waited for our first Chinese daughter in 1996-1997, there were only rumors, no referrals. During that time I had to distance myself from rumors because no one really had any idea what was happening. My emotions were all over the board as the rumors were. But we left our papers in and still received our daughter.

In the meantime, today, however you get through, is what works for you.

… I’m so sorry about how long the wait has grown. It really is all worth it once you get your child, but I know it would not have helped me to hear that! Hang in there. Be gentle and generous with yourself. If you don’t have children yet, take a really cool vacation to someplace not kid friendly. Study Chinese. Or study art or something you’ve always wanted to do. Set up that awesome home-based business that will let you meet the mortgage while staying home with your child (and let me in on it, okay?). Remodel. Practice meditation or yoga. Go to lots of movies. Talk to your friends about how hard this is, or talk to them about anything but. In short, either prepare for parenthood, or distract yourself, or both, depending on what might make this all less excruciating. I wish I had something better to offer, because I know how hard this would have been for me. Andrea, with permission.
