Easter/Passover Traditions

What are your Easter/Passover traditions?

When I was little, my mother (thinking about her a lot, as her birthday was a couple of days ago) always had an overflowing Easter basket for us, and we also had to find decorated eggs that were hidden in the house. Sometimes we helped her dye the eggs. There was always Easter candy, including a chocolate bunny. We had new clothes, including new dress shoes and tights, to wear to church, as it was usually a pretty nice spring day in Michigan. I remember also getting (and loving) the rabbit fur (how ironic is that) little muff. Those were days of innocence. In some way I always thanked the bunny for its fur. I don’t remember going to relatives for Easter, but we may have. My mother never cooked (or ate, so far as I know) lamb, so I think we had ham, but my memories are really hazy on it.

I generally don’t do baskets for my kids, it didn’t feel like the right thing after my mother died, but we munch on Easter candy. I haven’t even done that this year….but there’s still time.

I love Fanny May Trinidads…and this bunny [it's a 4 lb semi-solid chocolate bunny!] looks like it would be delicious!

I have a friend who has a serious Easter tradition, but I’m not sure if she developed it for her children or is passing along a family tradition. I want her to be my mother! Not only does she do a typical Easter basket, but she gives gifts of all the large ticket summer items her children would need, such as swim suits, etc. It’s like a second Christmas. On one level, it makes a lot of sense. Her kids don’t get more than they would, but they get everything in one fell swoop, so it seems more dramatic. Whereas, we got things as needed, when needed (same for my kids.)

I picked up a couple of DVDs today and in thinking about the above, I decided to hold on until Sunday. Surely I can do that! (I usually can’t wait.) One of my girls for some strange reason just loves stuffed pigs, who knows why, so I picked up one DVD and decided to take it with the little pig. The other had already asked for Flicka.

How about you? What traditions do you have — and what are you passing on — or are you making new ones? I’m not sure I’ve started a new tradition, but it’s a good one for this year.
