Words are things; and a small drop of ink
Falling like dew upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.
Lord Byron, (1788-1824)
Words can be angry, uplifting, hurtful, helpful, depleting, energizing…
They can cut to the quick, in a good or a bad way.
And don’t forget your thoughts. They are words too. Discipline your thoughts, so far as possible, to be helpful to yourself. Even negativity directed outwards, in thought, can tie you up in knots.
Recently I was listening to a thoughtful interview with Tim Allen. He has a very interesting background, which I previously did not know. He lost his father when he was 11 to a drunk driver (though the driver might not have been drunk.) He was in prison…etc. The interview takes about an hour and I listened to it in spurts. It contains more than the written interview. I recommend it, if you have time. You can find it here. He says that since 1976 he has tried to discipline his thought not to be judgmental — and that it is very hard. Of course, he says it better than I do.
If you want it as a free podcast, go here. I’m going to have to learn how to do podcasts…going to do that now.
I’ll be including some exerpts from the written interview in later posts.
Make your words count today. Tell someone you love them or appreciate them or wish them well.
I’d love to hear from you if anything interesting happens as a result.
