Behind the scenes with Lucinda Williams’ album West

The song Are you all right, with video from the making of the album West .

Lucinda is the daughter of poet and literature professor Miller Williams who worked as a visiting professor in Mexico and Chile as well as different parts of the American South, before settling at the University of Arkansas. [source wiki]

I like her voice, her quirky poetry and the beat of her songs. Some of the songs she doesn’t sing, she talks. She sings about universals. This is considered one of her best albums, even if you might have one that’s not your favorite.

One I particularly like from this album is Wrap my head around that, very clever lyrics. (I can’t find it on youtube.) (I transcribed these from the album, so pardon any mistakes.)

You told me you loved me
You said you wanna be with me
You told me you loved me
You said you wanna be with me

You looked right into my eyes
said I’m not like the other guys.
You looked right into my eyes
said I’m not like the other guys.

I know what I think I saw and what I thought I seen
and what was comin’ and what was goin’ and everything in between
What I thought I heard you say and what you really said
and what I thought you thought I thought was actually in your head
And what you meant to tell me and what I meant to say
and what I said you said I said and what went the other way
I know what you did to me and I know what we did
and who did what to who and who the hell you tryin’ to kid

You told me you loved me
You said you wanna with me
You told me you loved me
You said you wanna be with me

You looked right into my eyes
said I’m not like the other guys.
You looked right into my eyes
said I’m not like the other guys.

Um um, um um, um um, um um

I know more than you think I know, more than you think about
and no one think you and no one think you got it all figured out
I know I’m missin’ somethin’ or somethin’s missing here and there
and all over and over around and up and everywhere
and you’re just all a [lost the words] look out your zipper’s going to break
and I popped your little party favor and you just take the cake
I can’t believe I believed you when I found out where you’re at
and finding out why you’re too much and tryin’ to wrap my head around that

(and it repeats for 9+ minutes with a throbbing musical beat with musical interludes)

I have loved the heart that LW puts into her music for quite a while, but haven’t had a chance to pick up West yet.

The bulk of the reviews are good. I like her voice, the music, and as I’ve said, her quirkiness. You can listen to snippets of each song at Amazon, so that helps to make up your mind too, if you haven’t a place to listen to it before buying it.
