Living by conjunctions…

Again, inspired by the post about living by verbs…

The short definition: serving or tending to connect.

There’s a short list of conjunctions, but we couldn’t live without them:

and, but, or
because, if, when
for, so, yet

more, if you add these:
after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where, whether and while

some always appear in pairs:
both… and
either…or
neither…nor
not only.. but also
so…as
whether…or

Not much to say about these, except sometimes the only word we could use for our life at a given moment is: and. And at another moment, it might be because or but.

My grandfather used to call me “ya, but” when I was fairly little, because I said it so much…(Ya, but, grandpa…) Used to make me mad, but at the same time I loved him for it. While I don’t use the phrase much, if at all, any more, I do think it defines the way I think. I don’t automatically accept what I hear. I’m always on the look out for more on the subject (or already know a bit more about it.)

Somehow I think “No” should be a conjunction too (or anti-conjunction)…it doesn’t connect, it is just a dead-stop. One of my kids’ answers for just about anything is first, No. Come to think of it, I know an adult, who will remain nameless, like that too.

I guess today I’d pick: when. It encompasses all the hopes for the future.
